  • www.autobytel.com/volkswagen/j... The Volkswagen Jetta resides in the most competitive automotive category in the world: the compact car segment. Over the years this class has been dominated by the Japanese brands but Volkswagen has managed to carve out a spot with the Jetta. This small sedan offers German engineering and design at a very reasonable price point. Add to the mix a very fuel efficient turbocharged diesel power plant and the Jetta TDI really starts to distance itself from the rest of the pack. The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI has a base price of $23,055.
    Research shows that one point or another in your lifetime you will probably own a compact sedan. Most often compact cars are bought by young people who cannot afford a high end car or the empty nester looking for reliable transportation. There are a lot of choices in this segment. From Japan you have the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and the Nissan Sentra. From Korea you have the Hyundai Elantra, and from here in the U.S. here is the Chevy Cruze, Dodge Dart, and the Ford Focus. So you can see there are some very recognizable cars in this segment.
    One thing that set the Volkswagen Jetta apart is that it's engineered in German which translates into a world class European ride that none of the aforementioned competitors can match. Another thing that sets the Jetta TDI apart is that Volkswagen is committed to diesel technology. The 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder has an impressive 236 lb-ft. of torque making this one fun to drive fuel efficient car. Another thing that adds to the fun factor is a 6-speed manual transmission.
    Volkswagen is part of the VW/Audi group so in turn the car gets a lot of help in the design department. The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta looks more sophisticated than any other car in this segment. On the inside, the interior of the 2013 VW Jetta TDI is very clean, comfortable, and sophisticated. There is a very German feel to this car. The overall industrial look makes it appealing to buyers.
    Being a German car company, Volkswagen really understands what it means to drive a car not just own one. Because of that they put a lot of attention into things like the seats, the steering wheel, and the engine. For about $23k you get great fuel economy in a wonderfully styled car.

      ***** Yes, the reason why it matters is because the US cars require "scrubbers" to minimize the soot, but decreases mileage. Thanks for the reply and that is very good news to hear.

    I have this exact car I had a local shop remove the dpf/egr and do a 3 inch turbo back exhaust and I get 50 mpg lol people complain that diesel is worse for the environment when it produces less pollution than gasoline motors.

      That pollution statement isn't quite true. Diesels produce less carbon dioxide, but they do produce more sulfur dioxide and soot, which creates smog.

    I have a 2011Jetta TDI manual, and I am geting 50 mpg on the average!!! My Passat 2013 TDI SEL has gotten 52.3 mpg on a trip from St Louis and it has the DSG!!! Love both of them and the great fuel milage and ride they give me!!! Will never own anything else!!! I had Rabbit diesels for years and they never had this much power or fuel milage as these new ones!!!

    I am an auto journalist I live in India here Jetta TDi is a very popular car, and here its like the diesel king no other competition, i drove it a lot of milles more than 200 miles and also renault DCi diesel engine and Cruze TCDi diesel engine as well, most powerful is VW TDi>Ford TDCi>Cruze>Renault
    most reliable Ford>VW>REnault>Cruze, most noisy Cruze>VW>Renault>Ford, but VW is over hyped here as well, and the AT VW is unbeatable(damn fast gear shifts) but manual Ford is way better

    I have a 2005 Prius, with 250 K miles, still much better than Passat or Jetta diesel- last time I filled up the tank I got 56.1 mpg. Nothing compares with Prius. And just a reminder, gas is cheaper than diesel.

    • @leslielucci3182
      @leslielucci3182 2 роки тому

      They are very similar. We looked at both in 2013. It was between the Prius V (station wagon style ) and Jetta TDI sport wagon. Similar mpg. Really liked that the back seats in the Prius could be adjusted forward and backwards to get either more legroom or cargo space. Went with TDI because of greater torque for same mpg. Also, after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 many gas stations were out of gas in NY/NJ metro area with very long lines, but they all had diesel! So went with Diesel engine since our other car had a gas engine and wanted security that should the unexpected happen, we would be able to find fuel for at least one of our cars and not be stranded like so many unfortunately were.

    rskim119 - I have a 2000 jetta (am actually getting rid of it today for the car reviews above). But anyways, it has had no problems other than having to replace the speed sensor, and the outer tie rods. The spark plugs were so easy, it took me about 30-40 minutes to do them and new wires, and I'm NOT a mechanic, I just change oil. Sounds like your mechanic just wanted to make more money off you by saying it was difficult/adding labor

  • @leslielucci3182
    @leslielucci3182 2 роки тому +1

    Would love to see a video on maintenance costs and what to watch out for as car ages and accumulates many miles. Also 2013’s TDI didn’t come with blue oil additive to minimize emissions. How do you mod to make it emission compliant and what is the cost? Great video. Used to drive 2013 TDI 6 speed manual but sadly traded it in. Was getting 43 MPG hwy carrying 4 passengers and all their luggage with AC constantly on. With just the driver MPG would be in low 50’s.

    • @x-man4702
      @x-man4702 4 роки тому +1

      Wrong, VW and Audi are NOT the same. VW owns Audi and many other car manufacturers like Seat, Skoda, Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Scania and even Ducati Motorcycles. They share technology amongst all the brands and even engines. The TDi engine in this video was also fitted to the Audi A3 and this engine was developed by VW. The 1.8t engines that powered many Jettas, Golfs, and Beetles a couple of generations ago were developed by Audi, for example.

    I test drove this thing the gas pedal was so weird and annoying. You push it first and about and inch there is a dummy travel of the pedal which it doesn't do anything. It feels like the gas pedal was an after thought when they were designing the car. Also the transmission. It upshift so fast that it does not allow you smooth accelerate and match your speed with the traffic. It upshifts so soon and you slow down and you push the pedal more and it downshifts and kicks you back to the seat.

    It might be fun to drive but with terrible reliability, it will be driven by dealership mechanics test driving it for contstant repairs.
    A lot of electrical problems with these cars. Parts are very expensive and diesel being nearly 40 more expensive per gallon, you are getting an equivalent of mid 20s per gall in terms of cost.
    Play safe and go for corolla or civic, camry or accord, unless you do not care about reliability.

  • @1989rs500
    @1989rs500 11 років тому

    Yes the TDi has only few problems, it is the noisiest of the diesel engines and the other trouble is this is the most boring looking car inside and out, Also as SweetHubby82 quoted America dosent have good diesel s as of now so when they saw a diesel they just got blown away, The Ford Focus has the 2.0 TDci with 140 hp and 236ft pound as well and has same milage as TDi and its more fun to drive,more tech better suspension, So with no other competition how does VW become the king?

  • @1989rs500
    @1989rs500 11 років тому

    Yes so what, they use more powerful diesels as well, Almost all 2.0 diesels of Ford,VW,Peugot,Citrogen,toyota,hyundai,etc get same mpg as what Jetta gets in my country, actually Toyota gets the best followed by Ford and then only VW in India, Merc,BMW etc just look at the bhp and torque, bmw 320 d has aroud 170 bhp while merc 2.2 d has almost 200 bhp and humungus torque they are sporty diesels economy diesels are good, only VW showed up their diesel,that dosent mean VW is KING

  • @1989rs500

    no need for an American in Stuttgart, it was a survey that got published by some university of Britain but didnt get noticed much because everybody thinks Geman is the best in the world so British car Magazine Auto Express bought this news to life, Also 1 in 52 VW engines are failure so rest 51 are ok so JAmes Spartacus might be one of them, and I live in India and almost all diesel brands clock more than 1 million miles (just take give service ), the point is VW IS NOT DIESEL KING

      Mr. Cod
      Yeah CO2 - the same chemical compound that plants emit at night. Wow - dangerous shit, let's get rid of plants too.
      Anyway, diesels emit NOx, and that shit kills. Around 10,000 deaths every year in the UK are attributed to NOx pollution. If you're happy living with respiratory problems, be my guest - but that ain't happening in my country!

      Oh yes, gasoline engines don't emit NOx at all, let's get better informed, shall we? If you think your respiratory is due to diesel engines, this conversation is pointless. But if you have your head between your shoulders you would'nt eat every crap you hear on tv. Volkswagen fixed the problem with minimum of performance los. What it did loose is image. As I said, a country wich is one of the biggest consumers of oil, and has the most goseling cars in the world, points the finger at small german diesel. Soon every car maker in the US will copy the european diesel. I hope i get resperatory problems from the small diesels in europe than you're gas gasoling, poluting, and poorly built american cars.

      Mr. Cod
      "But if you have your head between your shoulders you would'nt eat every crap you hear on tv"
      And if you weren't a VW fanboy, you won't be spewing your pathetic nonsensical crap defending VW.
      "Volkswagen fixed the problem with minimum of performance loss"
      But couldn't replicate the same fix in the US because the standard for NOx emission is much more stringent.
      Here's the truth: they should have installed urea treatment system to bring NOx emission down like every other European diesel car manufacturers, but didn't in order to save money and deliberately cheated and got caught.

    Ridiculous, BlackMontain. I drive 200 miles every single day, carrying materials, and I am 57 years old... I don't think bicycle is a good ideia for me.
    SUV's and others large large cars make much more pollution than small cars. They are polluting the world, not me.

    VW horror stories abound. If only we could be reassured of VW's long-term reliability prospects, more people would buy the Jetta. As it stands, Toyota and Honda are the choice for hassle free, low-cost car ownership. Yes they are dull, boring appliances but that seems to be what a lot of people want.

    This is a really misleading video. The Jetta hes driving has an rpm-speedometer to 7000 rpm that tells me hes not really driving a TDI but a TSI Or TFSI!

      The car he's driving is a tdi.
      The car shown on pictures is not.
      Just look at both tachometers 😉
