根室本線[2024年廃線区間] Nemuro Main Line [section closed in 2024]

根室本線は北海道の中心から、やや北西に位置する滝川市から北海道最東端の町、根室市までの全長443.8kmの路線である(東京から直線距離で秋田 和歌山までの距離)。明治期の1890年代後期、この路線を建設する為に、樹木が生い茂り見通しの利かない夏を避けて春先の堅雪の季節に2名の鉄道技術者と数名の荷物運搬人らとともにヒグマやオオカミの棲む原生林や、蚊やアブが飛び交う湿地帯を徒歩で調査するところから始めた。その後、調査結果を基に原生林を切り開き、僅か20年の1921年(大正10年)8月に滝川から根室までを開通させている。以来根室や釧路からの海産物を道央へ、また道央からは木材や石炭を釧路の港へと運び、北海道産業の大動脈となっていた。沿線の駅は人々の生活に密着し、それぞれの時代の旅立ちや通勤通学、戦時中は出征兵士をも部隊へ運んだ。2024年3月いっぱいで廃止される根室本線の富良野市、南富良野町の各駅をたどる。
The Nemuro Main Line, a railway line, connects Takikawa City, a town slightly northwest of the center of Hokkaido, to Nemuro City, the easternmost town in Hokkaido, a distance of 443.8 km.
In the late 1890s, two railway engineers and several freight carriers began by walking and surveying virgin forests and wetlands, and began construction work. About 20 years later, in August 1921, I opened it. Since then, it has supported Hokkaido's economy by transporting seafood from the sea and wood and coal from the mountains. Trains were also closely connected to people's lives, and in each era trains were used to transport people on journeys, commuting to work or school, and during wartime, even soldiers going to war. We will follow each station in Nakafurano City and Minamifurano Town on the Nemuro Main Line, which will be abolished by the end of March 2024.
