Thanks I was able to fix my girlfriends civic gas door and look like a hero!
were you successful in repairing your girlfriends car? how did she thanked you? ;)
The cable housing can also break in the trunk (mine did). In the trunk, pull away the trunk liner on the driver's side, there's a junction box where the one cable becomes two. Have someone work the actuator handle and see if the cable housing is broken in this area. Some creative use of wire and a small fuel line clamp will repair it.
I'm having this problem. How do I get the trunk open to do that, not even the key works 😂
@@mrprincemusicandgaming Can you fold the back seats down? Theres a latch in the trunk that can open it if you can get back there
Mine da same buh my situation I can't get even get into da back of the trunk even behind mi seat bcuz my husband put a system speaker in an it literally takes up mi whole trunk an ii wanna open mi trunk 😭 idk where or how to get into it especially the cables or whatever it is to why it's not opening even tried pushing it the button on mi key fob it makes a noise buh doesn't pop up mi latch pull up from inside is loose tho... any word on what it could b
Super thorough! I've a '03. My gas latch (& trunk actually) decided not to pop open...desperately need gas of course. But happy to find this tutorial! I just got the Dorman kit and hopefully this will fix the problem, and its actually not my cable that's broken. You did a great job explaining, esp for a beginner like me, thanks!
Can you link to the Dorman kit or else give part no., please? TIA!
me puedes mandar el link del kit por favor
Somebody commented "Does this fix the trunk too? My gas is fine it's the trunk that dont open???.... is it the same repair??" and didn't receive a response, but I have the answer because I had the same problem and was able to solve it. I had to take off the backseats of my Honda Civic 2006. There's a screw in the center, above the rear seat and there's two more on each side, they had to be screwed off, the rear seat will be attached in the middle, you only have to lift it up and pull the cable that unlocks the rear seat. Then, you can take off the top of the seat, you'll then be able to unlock the trunk. Then I went to the back of the car and checked the cable that goes to the lock and a part of it was loose, so I tightened it with a zip tide and the cable worked. My trunk is working again. I have some pictures that I took and if anyone needs to see them, contact me. Thanks for the video
I may have to try your method. Thxxx
Thanks, this was very helpful. The metal rings were a huge pain in the neck to clasp around the black plastic piece but eventually got it done. My fuel door now works normally for the first time in years!
Excellent repair on this common problem, great video Jim.
Dormans to the rescue.Lol
Great info but if you cannot get to fixing this ASAP and need gas right away, then you can go thru the trunk (pull back the lining) and follow the cable to gas door. You can twist off (counterclockwise half a turn) the whole cable/locking mechanism. Super easy to take on and off when you're in a pinch.
Thank you for watching and your input . Don't forget to subscribe.
Awesome video. This is exactly the video that I need. I had this problem yesterday. The gas cover didn't pop up. Thank you so much for making this video.
best and cheapest part is """Fuel Door Release Repair Kit, Perma Fix 725, fits 01-05 Honda Civic""" look on EBAY
Thank you. I watched your video then i was able to save thousands. This guy was trying to scam me. Trying to say it was something else. I fixed it myself. So HUGE THANKS
What if the trunk doesn’t open either ?
Thank you for your video very detailed. Hard to find someone with patience
Thank you. Very informative.
Push for gas cover. Pull for trunk.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You just saved me a lot of money during a road trip.
Never seen that type of repair kit, very nice, even if it's dorman! Thanks!
Your right about the Dorman but this one I got lucky on .Lol Thank you for watching
The video should be helpful to anyone fixing this issue. Happy fuel filler door days again! Take care Jim
Ozzstar Thanks!
Merry Christmas Jim and family. Not a Dorman fan but sometimes it is what it is
I trunk swapped my honda yesterday and the lever stopped working lmao but now I know why. Thanks !
Awesome! I was about to order a cable but noticed the repair kit popping up in listings. Very clever part, I may even zip tie it to be sure it stays together, haha. Thanks for posting the video, a friend just started having this problem and this will save a lot of time.
I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching.
I have a 2015 Honda Civic that's doing the opposite for my trunk there's also no way into the trunk to figure out what's happened
Nice video as always. Thanks for all the videos this year i enjoy everyone. Merry Christmas
Thank you for watching Happy New Year
You sure made that one look easy.
ManicMechanic007 Thank you. Appreciate you watching my video!
omg, thank you so much - I was going to disassemble the whole rear seats (2 door coupe) - you saved me a ton of time!!!
My 2010 Honda Civic problem is the trunk not opening when pulling the latch on the floor beside the gas pump latch.
i love your northern accent. i could listen to you say ‘here’ like a million times😆
The gas covering also has a spring mechanism that pushes itself open when the lever is pressed. On my 1999 Honda Accord, it's just an angled metal slab. Somehow, that piece got bent too much so it didn't spring open. I just reshaped that piece so that it adds more spring to the cover. Problem solved.
However, I have a question. Can the issue you showed in this video trigger the engine light to come on with a P1456 code?
It is not uncommon, where I live, to see old Civics driving around with the gas door left open because of this problem. I replaced the entire cable in my 2006 Civic. The part was only $35. It's easy to install. Maybe two hours work if you're a slow diy'er that's never done it before. Just take off three interior panels, the back seat cushions, pull away the trunk liner, and remove the wheel under the gas filller door, to access everything. It's all clearly explained in the service manual. For some reason my dealer wanted $500 (!) to replace the cable claiming that they had to "tear apart the whole car". The new cables appear to be designed better to avoid the corrosion that plagues the failing cables (brass rather than steel cable fittings).
BTW - if you have this problem you can open the trunk and pull on the cable at the trunk latch to open the gas cap - at least in 2006 you can. Good to know in a pinch.
Can i get some info on where to get replace part
thanks !!!
I have this problem in my 08 except my trunk won't open
Hi Jim, in some other models (2006 Accord in my case) the problem was much easier to solve in case the gas door hinge spring is missing. If the handle works but the gas door does not pop out due to a missing door hinge spring, you need one person to push the handle while in the same time another person pry the gas door with a key. I used to do it when I lived in Oregon where all gas station are full service and the gas attendant help to pry the door open.
Hamad Alganis Thank you for your advice. You can change just the spring. Appreciate you watching the video. Happy New Year.
I don't know if you were just saying things backwards or if it's possible to install them incorrectly, but at 10:14 you were saying "push down to open trunk and pull it up to open gas cap".
As you can see on the label, it's vice versa.
What about for a 2016 Hyundai Elantra? I’ve replaced the latch and it worked for a bit but now it’s not working again so I bet it’s the lever inside…
What about for a 2015 Honda civic?
good thing to note is sometimes the door doesn't have tension so it doesn't pop-out, that was my problem.
is there a video regarding fixing trunk not opening when pulling the latch?
Yasmani Aguiar you can open the trunk if you put the key on top of the back seats you can let both seats down
Yasmani Aguiar and you can open the trunk through there
@@immanueltrades4464 can you explain this please
@@peetahtee3826 if you go into the backseats of your car at the top there should be like a key hole and you should be able to stick your key in
@@immanueltrades4464 not on the 2010, no keyhole. Had to blindly look for the latch though the speaker hole
Thanks this helped me get my AirPod from under the trunk release on my Accord 2017!
Thanks for watching.
I'm having the same problem in my 2014 Acura ILX, the cable froze I'm guessing and when I took apart the leaver sure enough it's broken about a half inch from the end.
Excelent video. Where buy this repair? I am from Brasil. Congrats.
Happened to me today when I went to get gas. Almost thought I was screwed cause I was close to empty. I used a plastic dash remover tool with my key to pry it open. I’m probably just gunna bend the piece the latch hooks into back so it won’t grab anymore.
EDIT: So instead of bending anything, or fixing the wire, I reached in behind the space where the wire in the trunk goes to gas tank latch, you’ll feel a round plastic piece with 2 notch or flap type things on either side, grab that and twist it whichever way it will twist and pull and the locking mechanism is out. At the end of that plastic is the little thing that latches shut the tank door, the male piece I guess you could call it. Then there’s a little black clip that makes the gas door spring open, unhook that and that’s it. Much better than pulling the wire from the trunk super hard cause I believe you actually will pull the wire apart from that piece as there is a nut at the bottom where the wire meets the plastic lock piece and I think it’s actually a thinner wire inside the black wire that needs to be pulled.
Thanks for watching.
How did you actually get the two circular metal clips on? Are you supposed to bend them open and then bend them closed?
Super helpful video. My problem wasn't exactly the same but this helped me identify the problem.
Thank you for watching . I'm happy to help. Don't forget to subscribe.
Hi there can it be used for the trunk i noticed that the one was broken . Thanks great job .
Thank you so much!🎉
If you’re stuck on the road is there a way to open this without fixing to get gas and go home first?
Merry Christmas Jim and thanks for all the help you provided.
Hoopty_ Medic Appreciate the comment and Happy Holidays to you!
my trunk won't open either; i pry the gas tank open with the key and need key fob to open trunk. if battery is dead i cannot get into the truck at all. I don't think i can fix it.
One thing is missed, a link to buy this kit....
Are you that incapable of searching a part website for a whole 5 seconds..? Part number is there, just look it up on google.
do you have one where they did want the whole cable replaced
Thank you. It easy to fix and made me save money .
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks a lot Jim!! Very helpful.
Hi Jim, great video. I ran into a different type of problem. When I went to pull up on the lever to open the trunk, the cable snapped from the underside of the lever. The trunk won’t close and I cannot get the gas door open. Is there a fix for the section that broke, or do I have to replace the whole cable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
same issue

Jim I have a 2008 civic I feel like it's a similar problem but I don't wanna open it all up before I have the parts. But I'm concerned that you have said this is not really for 2008 it sure looks like the same thing from the outside is it the same on the in side?
Great video, JIm. WHat is the part number? Not legible in the video.
Here is the link to Amazon amzn.to/2J9HF03 Let me know how you do
Will that part work for 2007 Honda?
yes i have the same problem on my 2007 civic
Mine just went out on me today at the gas station! 🤦🏽♀️ I have a 2002 Civic LX 2 door. Will that repair kit work on the smaller Hondas?
Yes it is the exact same. I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching. Let me know how you do.
Hey Jim the video was awesome, thank you for going through this so thoroughly! I have a question about latch cover you took off at about 3:58 into the video, what would the part name be? I’m try to replace mine and I can’t find the part name anywhere
my trunk can open, but need to push down the leaver to close the trunk. the gas totally cannot close. any idea?
Nice video Jim and every once in awhile Dorman will have a good repair part. Merry Christmas Jim & Happy New Year!!
Hayward's Automotive Thanks for watching the video and happy holidays to you also!

Sir what is the lock next to the trunk and gas lever have no key does it have a name?
Can this be used on the 96-2000 civics as well? My hatch and gas cap release have never worked
Great information!!! Thank you sir!
Approximately how much would this replacement cost?
Very well explained. Thanks.
How much is the cost to have someone replace that cable? I don't want to overpaid
My trunk release cable has two screws holding it in and are rusted any idea on how to remove them
I have a 2014 civic with the same issue. Is the replacement done in the same Manner?
Good info, but hell the coupe use the other groove because it is shorter, so this kit might not works...*sigh*
What about if the lock doesnt lock?
Thank you man.... very good repair and explanation...A+

Good Job On The Repair
The kit will work in a honda accord 2006???
Hi I like your video could you please tell me the part number i can not read it very well in the video
Sir this small box it is clip?
Hi Jim,
Do you know if a similar part is available for the 2007 Civic? I’m having the same problem with my EX but the product link provided in description says “Does Not Fit” with my model :(
Thank you for your helpful video!
Did you find any or tried this one? I’m having the same issue with my 2008
I would like to see wat springs that gas door open
great job...keep up the good work!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jim! good tip.
Thank you sharing and what do you recommend for a lock that doesn't turn on a Honda accord lx 99 that is supposed to lock the trunk with the gas door. I've tried using anti Siege and it still won't turn with the ignition key. So can you give me some good tips please?
Did the key work before? If it did the Try using some rust buster such as WD40 I'm happy to help.
Sometimes Dorman is the only choice we have. If I ever win the lottery I'm going to start a new replacement parts company that insures quality so mechanics and DIY'ers don't have to do a job twice. Nice video Jim. Take care.
Good job Jim!
Darwin W Thanks for the comment and happy holidays!
Can I use the same repair kit for a 2004 Honda Accord, it looks the same but wanted to be sure?
Check on my Amazon store to be sure. Here are some of the tools that jimthecarguy uses

Excelent video, thanks for explain
will this work for a 2005 Honda Accord??
Thanks it was so helpful
Dorman makes some items that no one else has. I have used those type products with success. As far as electronics and handles, I have not had success with Dorman.
Nice job Jim. Hope that wonderful Dorman part holds! Happy New Year!
I think I got lucky with this Dorman part .Lol Happy New Year to you and Helga.
What's that black piece call?
Go to harbor freight and get a set of panel removal tools for 5 bucks. Dont use screwdrivers to pop tabs on body panels.
Does this fix the trunk too? My gas is fine it's the trunk that dont open???.... is it the same repair??
Thanks for watching.
Please did you get any answer?
