Thank you so much for this video!!! I was stranded at a gas station 4 hours from home without gas because my gas door wouldn't open. Because of your video I was able to get access to that cable and pop the gas tank door so I could come home last night. I held the cable together and pushed down on the lever and presto. Today I'm going to get that kit that you talk about so I can actually fix it. I don't know how to thank you enough. I am going to like and subscribe and share with all my friends.
My 2006 had this problem. I could open the trunk but pushing to open the fuel door would not work. The fuel door can be opened by pulling the cable from the trunk in a pinch. I replaced the entire cable. A new cable is not expensive from Honda, only about $30. My dealer, however, claimed it was a $600 job because they have to "tear the whole car apart". The procedure is fairly simple and clearly documented in the service manual for anyone wanting to diy.
@@enesertt_ You have to pull on the truck latch cable. Pulling from the trunk end has the same effect as pushing the handle in the cabin to release the fuel door. You'll need a tool or a small length rope to do it. I had an small length of rope attached to mine for months before I finally replaced the cable.
Nice one. I was stuck at a pump to fill up the other day, and I had to get a passing stranger to wiggle the cap with a knife while I pushed the lever. Two man job 🤣
My 2003 Taurus has an ingenious gas cap door - You stick your finder under the gas cap door and pull it towards you and it opens - no cables, not switches, etc.. Foolproof
Where I live I see Civics driving around with gas door slightly ajar. The owners don't latch it shut so that they too can use the reliable old fashion method.
Locking doors came about after the 1974 gas crisis. Gas was hard to get and people were siphoning (stealing) gas out of cars. In my family there were many Honda’s including a 92, 96, 97, 98, 02, 06 and none of these had this problem. Each of these went well over 150,000 miles. Only problem was the hood latch (on the 98, sold this one with 170,000, it was a stick, & sold it for health problems ), plastic broke & I used a pair of pliers to open the hood. I currently have a 2009 CRV with 118,000miles and no such problems.
Had this happen. Used tubing from Lowe's (think it was hard plastic water line for a refredgerator) and cut slots in either end and metal pin retainer clips to hold the cable in place inside the tube. Works great.
Thanks for your video. Ordered that part and it fit perfectly. Only thing is the metal clips that hold it shut are too thin gauged to really hold it closed. So I used electrical tape and then zip ties and then more electrical tape to hold the zip ties in place. So far so good. 👍
I have a 2003 Honda Civic Coupe two door, is the removal of the panel behind the drivers seat the same as the four door you just demonstrated? Thanks in advance
Thank you for your efforts. The video was clear to understand up til the point you came back with the new part. After the camera angle was hard to see what actually you did... Hope I can get this issue to resolve...
Hi Jim I have a question would that dorman part you put on that Honda civic in your video will the same part work on a 2000 Honda Accord ex I'm having the same issues my trunk will open but my gas door won't open and if the part does work could you write me the dorman part number down because I've been trying to rewind the video but I can't see the part number on it very good
Hi Jim, had this happen at the gas station this morning. My metal piece is actually still attached to the white plastic. All go there, but the black sheathing has pulled loose from the metal clip. Will the Dorman kit work for me? Had you seen any break in this fashion? What might be my repair solutions? In the interum, how do I get the fuel door open to fill the gas to get to work? Is there an emergency area to pull in the trunk somewhere?
Jim - I have a 2010 Maxima. When I start it in the morning, it makes a noise - gruh, gruh, gruh, gruh, gruh. When I back out of the driveway, it makes the same noise a few times - gruh, gruh, gruh. It does not happen the rest of the day, even if the car sat for 4 - 5 hours. The sound seems to be coming from under the hood, seems like by the firewall? Do you know what it might be? No idiot lights are on and everything works in the car. Thanks.
Now it seems to also have a sound when I turn the steering wheel to the left, moving or not. Sounds sort of like a grown. I'll try to capture that sound as well, on a separate recording. Thanks for your help. Stay well.
Jimthecarguy - Why is it that symptoms go away when you're trying to share them with someone? I took my tablet into the car to capture the sound two days in a row and you guessed it - nothing. The next three days, I forgot the tablet and you guessed it again - made the noise each of the three days. What's up with that? I'll try again to capture the sound.
great information, but OMG the video skills are lacking. It would help if the video actually showed what was being done. You should have someone else record for you

Worked for me in 2023. Ordered the piece. Followed the directions exactly as in the vid. Worked the first time. Thanks.

Yes that job is easy but it does take a lot of time
@Jim Trainor can you please define the exact location of opening the gas door from trunk? I cannot find it :(

@@enesertt_ Pull on it right where the cable engaged with the trunk latch mechanism. It should be easily visible and accessible.
Thanks this helped me
Dorman gets it right every once in a while. Nice fix Jim!
Hahaha Every once in a while they do get it right.

Hi there,
Thanks to your video I was able to fix my neighbors daughter. It was exactly the same problem. Great video! You rock!

Very thorough in his Presentation covers everything problem tools solution step by step fix w part #,thumbs up to this Gentleman. 👍
Nice fix Jim. I replaced the hood cable on my 2000 Honda but not gas. I now know the quick way if I have to change it!
Thanks for stopping by Mike.
Really helpful! Thought I was going to have to pull out all the carpets etc.!
For a quick fix use jb well the one that looks like clay, comes in a tube . That shit has help me in multiple occasions
Thanks for watching and your input.
Thank you so much. I was in a bind and needed to be able to access the cable so I could open the cover and not run out of fuel!
Ordered my part. Will do the work when it arrives. Thanks

Will this work on a 2006 Honda Civic?I just seen this exact part on Amazon.
I'm also looking the repair kit for my 2007 Honda Civic but haven't been able to find that part for that gen. have you ?
@@erasmososa6861 no I haven’t :(
Thank you for your efforts.

I like the Peter Finn version, specially the final option of screw driver & crowbar.
Thanks for saying you only need a couple tools then mentioning a repair kit near the end.
in my case the metal end piece of the cable liner came off the liner and the steel wires are exposed, doesn’t seem like this will work, will it?
Those cable bracket clips always break due to the massive amount of VTECH horsepower. Haha Nice fix Jim, stay safe.
Thats for sure all that torque will do it.. Thanks for stopping by .I hope all is well
Thank you for your time! Appreciate the information
I am having this issue on hte 2009 Accord coupe. Is it possibly the same issue at the lever or did Honda upgrade it by 09?

Is that a collar piece that was broke?

For the door sill. Any name for the clips
The world is so much better because you exist 😇
Jimmy! I can't afford a repair kit 😞
Do you have a more ghetto approach to this problem?
Great video.
Thanks. We just bought a used Toyota that has this problem. Off to the parts store.
Will this fit 06 civic??? Please help.
Would this fit an Acura tsx?
Thanks a million bud 👍🏻

Thanks for watching anyway.
