People often don't realize the brilliance of the movie and why it works so well when they see it. What Daniel learned in months was something you could teach anyone in months. He was taught to see an attack, block and counterstrike. It didn't have to be pretty. And Miyagi chose point fighting because all Daniel would have to know by then is how to block and throw a single counterstrike. He didn't even have to have great technique for that, and he had the technique of a kid that had been doing it for only a few months. But he was effective through smart instruction. If it were freestyle, Daniel wouldn't have been ready. Being thoughtful like that in the presentation is what made the movie work. The remake fell flat because there is no way Dre is becoming a Kung Fu master to that degree in such a short time. And so it was harder to suspend disbelief.
That's the dude Vidal. They always talk about in Cobra Kai. I always wonder why they never had him in the show. He was the last person to beat Johnny before Daniel did it.
Wonderful heart warming film from 1984, classic. Little reference to the tournament referee's here, with a link to the film Enter the Dragon in 1973. Pat E Johnson is a 9 th degree black belt and was the referee in daniel's first match and the final. He was sent to collect money from Roper ( John Saxon) in the trees on the golf course with 2 other guys, in a flashback from Roper as he is being taken to the boat in Hong Kong harbour, And the other referee is Steve Sanders who wee see at 5.18 in the video, Steve is a 10 th degree black belt and had a brief appearance in Enter the Dragon as the Sensei in the Dojo that Williams ( Jim Kelly ) visits before leaving for Hong Kong. Steve was working his Students when Williams came in to say goodbye and Steve wished him all the best in his tournament, not through words but just the actions the two men make. This is also in a flashback from Williams as he is getting taken to the boat in Hong Kong harbour. Just a side note to the final tournament here which is brilliant. Great film from what seems so long ago which makes it sad, but the film has stood the test of time. Pat E Johnson makes an appearance at the start of the karate kid 2 congratulating daniel outside the tournament building. One of the best parts for me in this tournament is when johnny gets beat in the final, and quickly comes to reality and his senses, grabs the trophy and gives it to daniel saying " your all right larusso " showing his respect. Always brings a tear to my eye the ending. The cobra kai lads really hurt daniel throughout the rounds. I do think johnny comes to his senses quickly seeing the fight in daniel to overcome his injuries to beat him. Yeah just brilliant and i go back and watch it whenever i see it on the tv. 1984, 36 years ago and i am here in 2020. Thanks for putting this up. 👍.
Cool stuff! Did you know, that this one was supposed to end after Miyagi gives Kreese the "HONK!" treatment. But they decided that his look of pure satisfaction was the best place to end the movie (the score was at it's zenith and it was pure celebration) so cut the original end onto the start of the second part. The same thing happened with Jaden Smith's version, where they filmed Mr Han fighting Sifu Lee after the tournament, but it was cut so the film ended in similar circumstances (pure celebration at the win).
Also, at 1:09, Pat Johnson shares the screen with Chad McQueen. Chad's father was also part of that circle with Pat and Bruce Lee. Pat probably remembers Chad when he was born
At the end of the Dutch fight, you can tell that they overdubbed "winner" from the ref. That was probably just pointing out one point, because Dutch looked like he was going to continue fighting. That was probably supposed to be the first point for Daniel.
I’ve heard that there’s a deleted scene where Dutch just snaps and goes after Daniel, tackling him instigating a fight. That got Dutch disqualified which is why the match is short. I don’t think the scene was released though
