the Sawyer mini filter screws onto a soft drink bottle. I just checked mine with a 16 oz coke bottle and it fits. you shouldn't need another water bottle if you buy a couple of one liter sodas. A metal bottle might be all you need in addition to the Sawyer filter and a couple of soda bottles.

You can fit up to a 2L pop bottle or water bottle preferably. Bpa free if able. If you have a Wal-Mart nearby they have Sawyer mini and a bottle with it!

  • @miken7629
    @miken7629 29 днів тому +4

Used to use Sawyer filters but Walmart quit selling them and now has a $20 Red Cross filter that works with (Smart) regular water bottles plus has a carbon filter element. The 6x8 Poly Tarp at Home Depot is heavy duty, has grommets every 2 feet, you can fold a 2x6 floor and use remaining 6x6 in a plow point. While at Home depot you can buy a 2x10 foot roll of Reflectix, fold into thirds creating a 24x40 inch torso pad for ground insulation and duct tape the sides to keep pad folded in position, you will have a pocket in that Reflectix to stick additional clothes inside as extra insulation.

I like your philosophy of use criteria for these items JJ, but when I hear the term "survival kit" I think two things before anything else -- small enough to have with me almost always, and utilitarian enough to contain or gather the essentials.
The 4-in-1 whistle is a good start. For water, the aquatabs and a liter plastic bag. Also, the Aquamira Frontier water straw -- good for 30 gal. AAA flashlight. Mini Bic. Small Ferro Rod. A few firestarters. Mylar blanket. Fresnel lens and small signal mirror. Wire saw (for use as a bow saw only!) SAK Alox Farmer, with blade, saw, can opener/screwdriver, and a wicked sharp awl. Several yards of kevlar cordage. All contained in a 4x5.25x1.25 in aluminum tin with watertight lid and secured with big fat rubber bands.
And if it's not by itself in your pocket, it's in a small bag with bulkier supplies and small signal and clothing items like gloves, beanies, etc.

I'm not saying that Jason doesn't have decent gear... but he throws himself [and others] naked against all odds in his ''adventures''... and as a principal that's okay... I mean ''what if''... so the set that you bought for him, it will feel like a luxury... just ''premium''... I know he'll be impressed by the knife, and we'll see it again for sure, I bet that he'll love it the cup/pot [I know I do...] he loves his hummocks anyways, and the tarp will be the extra something, together with the bedsheet that he'll appreciate for sure... he may even say that '' that's too much... he ain't carrying all that crap...'' lol
Look JJ... it takes skills to survive, experience, and luck... gears, not so much... Jason knows that... our ancestors were getting through with almost nothing, people around the world still do!... I understand that the industry wants to survive too... but not on my expenses... travel light, improvise, and adopt is the way I go... from what I see, that goes for you and Jason too...
Btw, nice to see the bike rucks are still on your truck... that means that you take the e-bikes seriously... you haven't ''forgot the fun'' lol

Absolutely! Thrift shop FIRST, garage sale free boxes, ask neighbors about Boy Scout or camping items, look at every source of Mil-Surp, then, very last, get out Visa card for the Toys On Trucks at almost full-price.
Adding cash to your kit will frequently NOT change functionality of item. #10 hobo stove cooker works as well as $80 titanium, with advantage of ABANDONMENT when you need space or weight in your pack. Titanium is Space Alien tech to always be hoarded carefully. Salvaged cordage that you won't trust to support you weight is great for a tarp or food bag haul-up. DIY fire kit made from candle stubs and flameless BIC will mostly work and only take a little time, but NO cash. Tarp salvaged from a free wrecked tent is light and good enough. Re-sew and re-seal if it isn't right. Having some cash and no debt gives you tons of options when opportunity strikes. I have plenty of North Face, Mountain Hardware, REI, MEI, MSR, Arcterix, USGI gear that I paid little or nothing for by being willing to fix a tear or wash the item. Thank goodness for fussy rich kids sporting daddies charge card to fund their camping trip with new gear every time.

Water and quality sleep are the number 1 concerns for a short survival camping trip. Trying to secure food would be part of the challenge and fun. Starting a fire with dry wood and a bic only takes a little bit of intuitive understanding. Having a knife is probably more important for preparing animals into food than any other task. A light is a nice safety feature.

Might should have checked out the hardware section and fishing section at Walmart. At my local locations, at least, they have different types of cordage in hardware. The fishing section, of course, has bankline but the 'score' there would have been that - at least my local (East Tennessee) locations sell bait knives that could also be seen as 'Mora wannabes' that are even less expensive than the one you got - or at least they were the last time I bought some for, I think, $2.98 plus tax - and, in fact, look very similar except the ones at Wally have black handles. I have bought several just to have extra utility blades around that I don't care about. As you might imagine they are hit or miss on off the shelf sharpness but touch up pretty easily when necessary.

Oh JJ, you could have at least gotten him 2 Paydays! It is his birthday after all! But still, he'll know that you love him when sees that Payday you added to his kit.
So fun to see you cracking up about the Wahoo! You were making me laugh!
He could also throw all the gear into the pillow case and use the paracord to create a sling bag.
What I would do differently, since I'm a woman, not an ultra-fit heat generating furnace (a.k.a. man) is buy one of those flimsy little mylar reflective survival blankets. I trade it for the whistle.
I love your philosophy at the end. To buy what you can even on tight budget, even if the quality is not great. Then save to add/upgrade as you can. As someone who has gone over and over through times where I had disposable income to really tight times I know that when I had more money to spend I didn't always make the best decisions, and in fact probably made better purchasing decisions when I really had to think about, compare, read endless reviews/watch videos and save up for things. When I had more money I accumulated much more gear... but then just end up with lots of gear that I don't really use, and some of it I don't even really like. And later regret having spent the money on when the money could have been better spent on long-term food, off on adventures, and other things. So I definitely think your philosophy is good even when you have money, the most expensive stuff is not necessarily better. Like who really needs a $400 knife that's not going to do any more than a $15 Mora Companion?

I personally tell ppl if you don't have the money for high qualify gear to learn good skills and honestly get the crappy stuff. Stuff could hit the fan at any time its better to have crappy gear that will at least last 1 project then have nothing. That's MY opinion. I've been starting off with regular stuff and it isn't amazing but i didn't break the bank and as i get more i know that i have redundancy in the crap. To me that's how you build up redundancy.

Building a pack for $100 is good content for beginners but absolutely pointless in reality. My pack is built with items of varying quality and price. At around $800, I think i would be scared to have less in a situation where my very survival depends on it. Of course some would say theirs cost $2000 and they wouldnt want less than what they have. Others would say they just need a swiss army knife and a paracord survival bracelet. Knowledge is more important than gear but i guess my point is for $100, you cant even buy the basics to sleep outside one night in cold weather.

Love your channel. I'm curious, I live close to city,, But,,,,,,, I'm not far from State owned park land(woods with trails). If in a $&!+ hits fan situation, and can't get anywhere else living in an apartment, would you think going to state land and digging in and staying down until things seem to get better? I'm getting anxious with how the world is spinning round these days. We are 90 minutes from our bug out spot but if things get out of control not sure we could get there in a reasonable manner.?
