good point with the lint trap just put in a plastic bag and spray some lighter fluid on it also since the flint was not working i would have taken the head lamp apart using the batteries to start a fire

So if you ever want to do another Survival Challenge, I can give you a few tips from as a pretty avid hunter. When using ferro rods, or sparks in general, you want the tinder to be pretty flat and fluffed up. Moss, dried grass, and DEAD pine needles (or fir needles) work the best. Don't use anything that still has water. If it's green, leave it alone for fires. If it's brown, typically it's fine to use. Cattails also do well, but you have to dry them first if the bushy part of it is wet. Try to use the ferro rod roughly 6-8 inches away from the tinder for the best results. You'll be able to get a little more accuracy, though the sparks can go off in random directions sometimes. If you're too close, when you move away, the draft you make when you move quickly can snuff out the ember. You can do 1 of 2 things to keep the bugs away: Smoke them out with the fire (Use moss, leaves, and bundles of pine needles), or use herbs like Marigold, which is found in the Midwest and Southern United States. You can easily tell because they're orange flowers that look kinda like orange cotton balls. You can grind them up in your hands and get some of the oil-- you can tell that you got marigolds because they will smell faintly like bug spray you can buy at a store, that bitter, biting kind of scent. Rub that oil around your neck and the parts of your body that doesn't have clothes on it, like your arms and face. Mosquitoes and bugs like horseflies hate it.
Please please please do more of these. Practice makes perfect. Would love to see how you evolve into mastering survival. You did great and really enjoyed watching. Thanks Tyler
I want to see more this type of stuff. ;) If you found pine needles the pine tree they came from might have some resin or fat wood. That would have helped with your fire making. Using a fero rod isn't easy. I just make sure to have plenty of lighters. Easy is better. I'm glad your brought one with you. That 4 person tent was talking about new born babies. It will fit 4 newborn babies. I buy a 6 person tent for each person. That is just about right for 1 adult with room for your bavk pack. It's been fun. I enjoy your channel. Thanks
Its crazy how so many people dont realize you can gently scrape the starter stick until there is a pile of the powder from it. When that pile of powder is hit with sparks, it will light right up.
For using a ferro rod, what is recommended is to use the back side of the knife to shave off some of the magnesium into a small pile then strike the starter to throw sparks onto the pile then the magnesium shavings should catch fire and boom you have fire
Hey Tyler! Just a tip for next time, the flint, if you strike it slowly you can shave some magnesium off and gather it in a pile and strike the flint to make sparks you can make a small fire

Nice! Love your channel! Your ferro rod technique was spot on… The back of the blade usually needs to be prepped…. The tender was the issue. Pocket lint, paper, lint shaving’s from your jeans, and frayed cotton socks work great. Also, putting tender on the ground cools it and not having it in a bird’s nest shape makes it harder to pick it up and blow on. Keep it up! Practice, and you will master it!

I couldn't do it either. He goes to get wood, and comes back with a few twigs. I met Les Stroud at the Sasquatch Summit in Ocean Shores, and he would get a kick out of this! LOL
if you looked for some birch trees around, there is a type of very flammable oil in the bark of birch trees you could have used, and make it feather off instead of taking the wood off completely, then you have it in basically a manageable bush and is much easier to catch a spark and combust into flames :)
Been waiting so long for this video. (Although this is more. “I went camping on a budget” kinda video) we gotta see the real 48hr+ video where you build a shelter but u have some tools. Lol just something id like to see
This was fun, and the way we got here is basically when farming was invented, by being able to create and share food it allowed others to focus their skills on other things, so everyone didn't have to know how to feed their families.
the cotton in sleeping bags usually have some type of fire retardant in it. Also if you scrape the back of the knife on the feral rod to put some in a pile to aid in the lighting capabilities. Most of primitive camping is trial and error, just think about sports or even a new camera/computer there is a learning curve. I applaud you for attempting many different types of starter. Keep up the good work and can't wait to see you attempt it again.
Yes i for sure want to see more of this type of stuff! I loved the longer video format and wish it were even longer and the survival challenge was so fun!
To start the fire you needed a nest of finer material to catch the spark. Second, pull the knife across the flint keeping the flint still. Also the sleeping bag Material is normally not cotton.
thats what i was going to say! I bet if he had used the knife to dice the wood shavings into a tiny pieces and crushed the dried leaves into almost a dust, he would have started a fire.
Probably polyester. Which should still be flammable. Another tip for using a ferro rod is you can scrape it slowly and build up a pile of ferro dust to fling a spark into to help things get going.
Tent is looking smaller and smaller as video goes on😅 Would that be useful to set up inside your home if it's cold out and no power? Would it help to retain any heat?
@nicoleanita5330 Let's see you start one without lighters or matches. Course not that it would matter anyway because most modern women couldn't do the next step which is cooking 😂😂😂

Tyler your suppose to “shave” the fire starter into your pile of pine needles or leaves or twigs until you have a nice visible coating over your pile then spark into that. The residue that you have “shaved” into the pile will ignite and start your fire. And your sleeping bag is fire retardant lol You crack me up
Welcome to this week's episode of "Inspect my wood". Thank you, Tyler, the panel rates it 8/10. Thanks for showing it to us🤣🤣🤣 this was fun. I think we should do that again. I hope you got some sleep, I know I wouldn't have. I can recommend getting a ferro rod with a magnesium strip. It makes lighting a fire so much faster
Hey brother. I'm a survival instructor. That's a common AF issue. So a couple things. 1. Lighters are cheap and work better. 2. A much larger ferro rod works better. 3. You need to make a tinder bundle. Think of a birds nest. Pine sap works. birch bark works (but you gotta rough it up) think fibrous furry and fragile. Pocket lint works. You can slide your knife sideways on cotton socks to get lint. Also a lot of sleeping material is fire resistant but it was a good idea. Don't feel bad dude. This happens a lot to newbs and even some intermediate guys. Lighters and storm matches are champs. And magnifying glass over 10x mag (if you have sun). The biggest thing with fire is your tinder bundle skill. After that, make a feather stick kinda like what you were doing with the wood chips and you're golden. You did great man ALSO this sounds dumb but great thinking with how hot the handles are gonna get. SOOOOO MANY PEOPLE get burned like that. Like at many survival schools that's a serious issue. So you have to super duper harp on it constantly. You'd do great in a school brother And to answer your last question on how did we go from dirt to now. Community and family. Not being all hippy nonsense. One group cooked, one built, one hunted etc. similar to what we have now just less industrialized.
@@Squisky you don't need to make fire to live in a city. You don't need a ferro rod. Or a lighter at all unless there's a major incident. If that's the case fire is a low priority. So that's an invalid point bro.

Whole sequence of trying to start a fire reminded me of my mate who wanted to "experience survival" he came prepared with "Amazon stuff" as well, and we all had a daily job to start a fire, like rota thing, when it was his turn we were woken up by him getting mad that nothing works and fires starts from a supposedly a cigarette butt xD, It was better than Monty Python. Thank you for bringing those memories back. Love it!
i was thinking the same thing. with all that fallen wood laying everywhere, why would you waste the energy and effort cutting down a perfectly good tree? plus a log wall would be great for radiant heat. but its not a survival channel, its a review channel.
I was thinking that too. I am a lifelong Boy Scout (BSC) and learned survival skills as a pre-teen and advanced wilderness survival as a Venturer Scout. This video made me cringe. @@shsd7579 It actually does make a difference because the pressure is constant which is what creates more sparks and the rod is still which makes it easier to aim those sparks into a more concentrated area on x material. That being said, he could've shaved the magnesium rod a little which does shorten the life of the rod, but, it gives you a small pile of magnesium that sparks huge instantly almost every strike. This trick is used commonly in wetter conditions but works well to help people learn.
there are two schools. most would say pull the rod and keep the knife still. the other way works too. also: that does not look like a magnesium rod. love it that this survival challenge was 45min only about making fire. fire is far from necessary.
You should've taken the blade of the knife and lightly rub it on a dry stick to make fine saw dust. Put the saw dust in a pile and let your sparks land on it. It'll create an amber that you can gently blow on making the amber even larger. Then you would have to find some dry grass or something to set on the Amber's so they will hopefully start on fire. From there just keep upgrading the kindling until you have a nice size fire

Had to click the like button for seabears! You're protected now!
The sea bear circle had me laughing so hard
Gotta prevent that sea rhinoceros, sea bear attacks are only the beginning lol
Everyone knows you have to scratch a pentagram around your tent not just a circle.
What are sea bears?
@@ilovemalechickensSpongeBob season 3 episode 57b
@@BoLBibleStudy thank you
Props to how much effort Tyler puts into these videos for our entertainment!!!
Please, dear, God, don’t ever let me be in a survival situation with Tyler lol enjoyable to watch, but would kill me to be a part of
I would be screaming at him 🤣 I am patient but dear LORD
I couldn't do it either. He goes to get wood, and comes back with a few twigs. I met Les Stroud at the Sasquatch Summit in Ocean Shores, and he would get a kick out of this! LOL
While y'all getting made at him I'll be laughing at you.😂
Sometimes it's good to socialize with strangers bc that's a good way to make friends.
@@davidregan9872 Les stroud was out in my neck of the woods recently? Would be cool to meet him for sure
if you looked for some birch trees around, there is a type of very flammable oil in the bark of birch trees you could have used, and make it feather off instead of taking the wood off completely, then you have it in basically a manageable bush and is much easier to catch a spark and combust into flames :)
This is by far the most informative bush craft video I've ever seen, I will use all this info and apply it to my next camping trip.............👍
😂😂😂😂
Yeah do Everything different and you'll be fine.. lol
Don't follow his instructions, you will die.
Always find a way for an 89 cent cheapo lighter to fit into the budget 🤣
Tyler on a fallen log, legs spread whacking a stick with a knife. One wrong hit and it's a self vasectomy in the making.
That hit had to be one of the most lucky wrong hits in the history of the world
The world could only be so lucky.
Should do a video where you use survival tools you already have from your previous videos that would be interesting
Yes i for sure want to see more of this type of stuff! I loved the longer video format and wish it were even longer and the survival challenge was so fun!
To start the fire you needed a nest of finer material to catch the spark. Second, pull the knife across the flint keeping the flint still. Also the sleeping bag Material is normally not cotton.
its not real cotton for sure - something that doesnt catch fire i expect
thats what i was going to say! I bet if he had used the knife to dice the wood shavings into a tiny pieces and crushed the dried leaves into almost a dust, he would have started a fire.
Maybe he insulated his house with cotton lol
Probably polyester. Which should still be flammable. Another tip for using a ferro rod is you can scrape it slowly and build up a pile of ferro dust to fling a spark into to help things get going.
Tent is looking smaller and smaller as video goes on😅 Would that be useful to set up inside your home if it's cold out and no power? Would it help to retain any heat?
You should do another camping video but with stuff your subscribers send you
you're suppose to scrap shavings off the rod first and put them underneath the tinder before striking.
as a boy scout i find him compleatly incapeable of camping and it is funny to watch this guy doing every thing wrong
Tyler trying to start a fire has me CRYING 😂😂😂
Nice profile pic. 💋
Only Tyler can prevent forest fires!😂
@nicoleanita5330 Let's see you start one without lighters or matches. Course not that it would matter anyway because most modern women couldn't do the next step which is cooking 😂😂😂
Pro tip on the ferro rod. Dryer lint. It goes up like gasoline
If you found pine needles look for the pine tree that must have a knot filled with sap, that will help you a lot
I think you should do a fire starter redemption video!!! NEVER GIVE UP!!!
This is a really great video idea, would love to see more like this in the future. Great stuff
I completely agree 👍
I knew this video would be great. My favorite thing about Tyler is that he knows that he doesn't know things and doesn't research before doing anything. Actually a great way to show how hard or easy a product is to use
Been waiting for this my whole tyler tube life 😂
Tyler tube always makes me happy watching his videos, he is so entertaining time passes so quick when I am watching haha😃
Some people believe that Angels came and gave us knowledge that helped us know what we know today. Yes more of this content please! You did an awesome job! Thank you for everything you do!
Folks worried about how a guy does something while he talks about sea bears and chubacabras is hilarious
Tyler your suppose to “shave” the fire starter into your pile of pine needles or leaves or twigs until you have a nice visible coating over your pile then spark into that. The residue that you have “shaved” into the pile will ignite and start your fire. And your sleeping bag is fire retardant lol You crack me up
Please, don't ever get lost in the forest Tyler! We want more videos 🤣
The smaller ferro rods dont work well a lot of survivalist say to use at least a 6 inch rod u got more sparks
Great video! I love watching all your videos. Please never stop being yourself in these videos. Thats what make them so good and real.
You did great man
ALSO this sounds dumb but great thinking with how hot the handles are gonna get. SOOOOO MANY PEOPLE get burned like that. Like at many survival schools that's a serious issue. So you have to super duper harp on it constantly. You'd do great in a school brother
And to answer your last question on how did we go from dirt to now. Community and family. Not being all hippy nonsense. One group cooked, one built, one hunted etc. similar to what we have now just less industrialized.
Modern world. Use modern techniques bro.
We live in cities; not in the woods. Just use a blowtorch.
@@Squisky you don't need to make fire to live in a city. You don't need a ferro rod. Or a lighter at all unless there's a major incident. If that's the case fire is a low priority. So that's an invalid point bro.
Me and hubby yelling at television that Tyler is doing it wrong. Brings us together as a family. 😂😂😂
I had to watch it twice, because the whole first time was my wife saying "He's doing this wrong" and "That'll never work".
My husband and I were doing the same thing! LMAO
Damn, ya'll have wifes and husbands? I can barely even get a girl! 😢
My wife just told me to "blue skadoo" into the TV and show him the right way, as long as I shut up about it.
My wife hates him.
All of the Deadwood around can you pick a live tree
The way Tyler just tosses everything over his shoulder after covering the things he bought
I remember when my cousin forgot to make a circle around his tent to keep out the Sea Bears. He got attacked but thankfully he lived and is fine with no life effecting injuries. 😊
we need to see a true Tyler survival challenge. This was a half day camping challenge lol. 5 days, no lighter, but any ferro rod you want. I HAVE to see what you hunt for food and scavenge for water.
perfect opportunity to be fasting
Easy way to get fire is to scrape flint off on the wood and leaves so when u spark it it then sparks a big area to start fire
100% We need a lot more camping/bushcraft content from you Tyler, not for our sake, but for yours. That skillset needs some work. Kudos for sharing your experience 😂
Definitely a segment on the vast array of fire starters and using them in the outdoors to see if any actually work
You are supposed to slowly scrape off some of the flint, make a little pile of flint shavings and then strike the flint and it will catch on fire. Also dig in your pockets for pocket lint.
That’s with a magnesium striker with a normal ferro rod you don’t need to do that
A pile of flint shavings? I want to see a video of you doing that.
Love it!
Tyler was never a Boy Scout, and it shows (or if he was, he never learned anything from it).
i was thinking the same thing. with all that fallen wood laying everywhere, why would you waste the energy and effort cutting down a perfectly good tree? plus a log wall would be great for radiant heat. but its not a survival channel, its a review channel.
@@parabellum5847😂
I was thinking that too. I am a lifelong Boy Scout (BSC) and learned survival skills as a pre-teen and advanced wilderness survival as a Venturer Scout. This video made me cringe. But kudos to Tyler for making the effort to stay alive in the woods wherever he lives with 100 dollars in Amazon products 😂
@@infowarrioroneI don't get the snark at all. As opposed to...already owning a $200 tent and $700 sleeping bag? This was more testing out budget Amazon camping products than "surviving" I mean he didn't bring a gun and didn't need to eat squirrels either...gonna take off points for that too?
I think he said he was, when he was using a bow.
I enjoyed it always enjoy his videos no matter if it was not done 100% correctly just shows nobody is perfect and we don’t know everything but we do what we can and that’s why I enjoy this man’s videos just a guy making videos
Keep it up Tyler the sparkers are not always easy to use they can be stupid sometimes
I swear that Tyler is playing a character. Surrounded by downed trees, "I need to cut down this tree" 😂
The second I saw him doing that I realized he wasn't too bright
I hope so....this video is hurting my brain
I've often thought the same thing. He can't be as clueless as he seems.
He wanted a fresh tree that was sturdy and could take multiple hits. The wood on the ground would've broken due to rot and dryness.
@@BoglinZillaso it is better to use the trees on the ground that would have broken after 2 hits
i wanna see more of this type of stuff
When you’re using the flint, don’t pull the flint away from the steel. Leave the flint just above the pine needles and push the steel down.
This was cool. Would like to see more like this!
in terms of sparks it doesnt make a diffrence his way just makes it easier to avoid punching the pile of kindle with the steel
just bring a lighter
@@shsd7579 It actually does make a difference because the pressure is constant which is what creates more sparks and the rod is still which makes it easier to aim those sparks into a more concentrated area on x material. That being said, he could've shaved the magnesium rod a little which does shorten the life of the rod, but, it gives you a small pile of magnesium that sparks huge instantly almost every strike. This trick is used commonly in wetter conditions but works well to help people learn.
there are two schools. most would say pull the rod and keep the knife still. the other way works too.
also: that does not look like a magnesium rod.
love it that this survival challenge was 45min only about making fire.
fire is far from necessary.
always remember to bring a towel
Love these types of videos testing different things out in the field like this. Would love to see more of it
Was anyone else shouting when he was setting the tent up on the side of a hill?
YES!!!! Was also saying why cut down a tree, when there was a perfectly good one down already
I was cheering. Acid reflux patients tent
@@mikkohapponen5728 good point
Plus no water ditch around the tent.. I kept cringing throughout this video.
You also noticed how he didn't film in the morning? I'm so sure he went home to sleep!
You should do more videos like this and maybe even go on trips very good work
When it comes to tents you need to take the amount of people that it says can fit and divide it by two
Dude, was that the most level spot you could find? 😂 Lotta fun for a hunny.
