9:00 Cooking cans on the fire. Grab the can and thump the side on the heel of your boot. That puts a nice dent in the side of the can. Put the can on/near the fire and when the dent pops out it's ready and still not pressured enough to explode. No shaking, no risk.
@@o1mtbiker Given that you are denting it just before cooking, I don't think there's time for any reaction ... but I haven't gone camping and done this for nearly 40 years. :)
@@amcconnell6730 yah I have done it many many times in the past as well. But won’t any more unless in an emergency. Look up what that plastic liner does when heated.
The dogs patient behavior that lacks the urgency of most dogs in the presence of foods shows his confidence that he doesn't have to worry because he knows he won't get left out. (Plus he's probably got an unusually good personality).
mine are my kids, lol, his dog looks like he eats better then he does. same with mine! animals are innocent and love us with no limits, so we should love them! any one who harms an animal is just not good, bc unless it is a bear attacking you there should be aboslutley no reason to harm an animal.
9:32 - The interior of the can is often lined with a layer of polymer or plastic to prevent the food from reacting with the metal. This lining can melt or release harmful chemicals if exposed to excessive heat. For this reason, I recommend puncturing the can creating a tiny hole. You still get all the benefits and sufficient pressure, but not enough static heat build up to melt this layer of polymer to a dangerous degree. Alternatively, you can re-use a can which already had its inner layer of plastic melded, albeit at the cost of a sealed top - but that's where the good ol' foil comes in handy. Just remember to tighten it with a wire or some sort of metal clip - if you can.
I have one fish cooking hack .Wrap fresh caught and cleaned fish in thick layer of wet newspaper, then wrap it in tinfoil. When cooked and unwrapped the fish skin will stick to the dry newspaper and be ready to eat.
I like a well salted fish, fins spread pretty with the salt, skewed on a shaved stick thru mouth out gill thru belly and out, cooked near the fire until skin is toasted both sides. Yum.
It was when we were camping and had just caught a fish and one of the campers next to us told us that method. Only time I ever tried it and it was amazing how well it worked and how good the trout tasted
You know, I can say with confidence that I know a lot about the outdoors. But there's also the quote from Horace Kephart: "There's no diploma at the school of woods". Meaning, there's always something new to learn. And this video is a proof of that. I didn't knew about this way to cook meat and what about the eggs in the ziploc bag. I would have never thought of that! Excellent video and that's why I love your channel Greg. Down to earth, practical, no fuss, no wham, just pure and simple fun, and knowledge :)
Sorry but I think a better interpretation of "there's no diploma" would be more like "you have to learn for yourselves". It doesn't matter how much you study and how much you learn, if you've never applied it, you'll suck.
6:00 just a quick note for folks that might want to give this a shot - just make sure your rock isn't one from a river. Some folks might be tempted, because they're easy to see and pick up. However, rocks that have been soaking in water for a long time can have moisture seep into the microfractures inside, and can explode when heated. Especially risky if you're trying to use them to create a warm bed. Dry-ish ones are fine. Just not ones that haven't been sitting in a river bed. Loved watching this. Takes me back to when I was a kid. So many of these things I knew what you were doing because I grew up in the woods, too, many years ago. I was just telling my cats last night what a wonderful invention aluminum foils was, and how versatile is was in the woods. With a knife, a tarp and tin foil, you can do just about anything. Yeah. I talk to my cats. I've never had a cat use my words against me or tell anyone my secrets. Anyway, it was a teachable moment for them, and another chance for me to show off my opposable thumbs. I'm a god to those furry little weirdos. My go-to knife is Schrade that does just about everything fairly well, although it weighs a full pound, so it isn't light. They call it a "Reckon Tini" now. Can't recall what they called it when I bought one, but it's a solid knife for the woods, and you can chop wood with it if you use a stick to pound it through. Not terribly expensive, either. Any time I go on a trip up to see my dad, that knife is in the pack I put in my Jeep, (along with my tarp, foil and a few basics) in case something happens somewhere in the middle, where there aren't any people.
I once had a rock explode on me that wasn't from a riverbed! It was up on a mountain, and it was raining a lot, but not at the time. When it was raining a lot of spots formed temporary rivers with all the water flowing down so I guess that made the rock wet for a longer time. It was a kind of slate if that matters at all.
@positivepotato6765 I thought the same and as I was writing my comment I thought about the fact that it’s safe to reheat foods in them and also put hot foods in them so it should be safe to boil eggs in… theoretically lol
Cooking anything in plastic probably isn't the healthiest. I'd use this more as an emergency type thing. You can also do the same with plastic bottles. The water will hold the shape of the bottle when it's in the fire.
Man after my own heart. I learned a lot of this as a scout in the 60s. My brother and I lived in the woods all summer from the time I was 11. I used these kind of tricks on my senior trip... a walking tour of South East Asia with gun and radio. One I'd add... have a couple rocks the size of golf balls with 6" "tails" made of wire for handles. Build a teeny fire and heat them one at a time and dip in your canteen cup of water to boil it for purification or coffee.
The world LOVES a person that feeds their pets well. You're a star Sir! These are hacks we've never seen in a world where many are filming stuff others have already shown.
Haven't tried it yet but heard slightly denting the side of a can before heating up in a fire is safer. The dent will pop out before it explodes giving you some warning. Was warned to point it away when opening though as contents may spurt out. Also heard you can heat cans fully submerged in water and they shouldn't explode. Both tips came from old soldiers from back in the day when rations were canned and you didn't want to open them until the last minute because you needed to move or were warming something up to bring to one of your buddies away from the rest of the group.
Correct. I was in the US Army 1972 to 74. C rations, in cans, in a trash can that had a diesel fuel heater. Toss cans in, dip them out and eat. Never explodes. Water only gets to 212 degrees never gets to steam temps.
I guess you like eating plastic. Inside of all food cans has polyurethane coating please do not do what this guy said. Just because people do something for years does NOT mean it's safe

I'm happy to have found an outdoor channel that doesn't advertise something every 5 minutes. The stuff is usually junk or unnecessarily expensive. you go back to the basics that are so important. Thank you for your correction and your ingenuity. You are great!
Just like the stupidity of heating tin cans, which are usually lined with plastics. An egg's shell becomes permeable when it's boiled, plastic particles in the water CAN get into your egg.
A good concept. Knowing how to get around missing/damaged pieces of gear is great tools for the toolbox. The only difference between camping and survival is knowing when you’re going home so being able to do the most with what you’ve got is a both a creature comfort and a potentially life saving skill.

Hiya Greg, nice vid, I must admit, I didn't know about the 'boil-in-the-bag' hack. Regarding the cook in the tin, to prevent the can exploding, the British Army taught us to laterally dent the tin, with any pressure build up pushing the dent back out. Have a good day buddy.
I’ve been wanting to make a backpacking video like this. So many backpackers are all about all this different gear, and trying to bring it all, and be lightweight, when if they just brought a good bushcraft knife, they could easily make these things in the bush fairly quickly with practice.

Fab idea Greg, hacks. Summer & some of us just like fooling around in the partially forested back yard! Partner’s health am caregiver so tied to home, but I still need to be outdoors! So what if the Weber grill is my fire pit & cut collected wood with a chain saw. Break out a tent & this granny can sleep on the ground with the grand pups! Party! ^^
When the coffee is done with grounds on top. Just put a little bit of cold water on top of coffee. All coffee grounds will go to the bottom instantly. Old campground secret
Yep that's how I make my coffee and it's best to season the pot first boil some hot strong coffee in your pot for 10-15 minutes then dump out and then make your coffee in your seasoned coffee pot wow! It really does make a difference! It's delicious a cup of that while listening to some Jesse Murph music is a great way to start the day!
A friend , cooking for his new girlfriend , microwaved a tinned meat pie , a Fray Bentos one . That was a bad idea , but he also left the can sealed ! The microwave door was blown off its hinges , his kitchen window and door glass was damaged and considerable all round damage resulted ! Strangely the relationship carried on anyhow ! Bless . Moral of the story , dont take a microwave out camping with you ! Lol
I put a dent in the tin first and then chuck it in the hot coals and with a gloved hand take it out and shake it every 10 or 15 seconds until the dent pops out.
Back in my army days we had tinned rations. Lots of the blokes would push one side of the tin in before cooking, when the side popped back out the pressure was up in the fan. It was sort of early warning. I didn't do the unopened can, I saw too many blow up.
Hey, Greg and ❤️ Finley ❤️. Beautiful views there this time of the season. Hope you and the family are all well. Can't wait for the bestie and I to use some of these tricks. Give Finley a huge hug for me!!!!
08:45 I just found this out and remembered this video, cooking in a can is not advised unless the inner plastic lining is burnt clean, it could be bad for your health.
I love bush life. Spent all my childhood and teenage years camping in Northwestern Ontario near Upsala, English River. I love my Benchmade knives… they are expensive but well made and use that high carbon tooling steel that comes razor sharp. My dad always made coffee for us that way, but in a pot over the fire of course lol He called it Finnlander coffee! I remember if you were kinda in a hurry you could gently splash some cold water over the top to make the coffee grounds sink faster.
Good tips. Yeah I've cooked and boiled water in paper lunch sacks. I've cracked eggs in bottom, tossed in some bacon , veggies and cheese and fold opening of bag down....makes a nice bag omelet!. Boiled water for coffee and tea in lunch bags, as well as the paper coffee cups like you get at Starbucks etc. People don't realize paper burns at F 451' whereas water boils about F 199 at my elevation here. The bag isn't heating up hot enough since the water is displacing the heat...like a radiator on a car. I've even used those tiny Dixie cup to heat a shot or two of water in, during winter camping. Nice dog you got! Cheers
Great teachings. I love to watch this sort of ideas. There is always something new or a little different of applying principles. Its ace. 6:20 after coffee is ready, to be double sure of grounds go to bottom, add a table spoon of cold water in. 9:00 great idea. would be a bit touchy haha, whenever I did that I opened just a few mil, just to stop the pressure cooker. 12:50 never used a plastic bag, but used a sheet of paper to make a paper cup and bring water to the boil on gas stove direct contact as if it were a pan. So long as there is water, the paper doesn't burn. I did that first aged 12 from the back of a book, I still recall how amazed I was that it worked.
I would even love to watch how Greg spends a day and night in the city! Where/what does he eat? What kind of parks or local lakes does he visit? Greg could even make that super interesting
Except boiled eggs absorbed the water they're being boiled in. I don't think Ziplock has designed these baggies meant for cold/warm storage to account for extreme heat. No doubt it's leeching all sorts of chemicals. Enjoy at your own peril.
I loved this Greg. As per usual the entrepreneur of the bush. Great ideas. Just another tip if you want to sink your coffee grounds just pour a tiny amount of cold water over them and the cold water will frag your grounds to the bottom quickly 😊
My grandfather, George Ovens said that his family originally came from Germany, and the Ovens family original name from Germany is Von Offen, which means Ovens, and they were in medieval times a large family of German Bakers.
6:31 Yeah, looks just about enough. Worked with a guy from Louisiana years ago. First time he made coffee before we all left on our routes it would curl your toenails. Asked how many spoons he put in the filter he said "We don't count no spoons, just fill that little basket about 3/4 full of coffee grounds."
That plastic bag trick would have never crossed my mind. Matter of fact, I would have bet money against it. Today I learned something new. Thank you sir
Tin foil goodies. My wife wraps ground beef, chopped spuds & carrots, and spoonfuls of mushroom soup in tinfoil. She double folds the seams and makes sort of a burrito. We toss these on coals for awhile until done. Completely awesome stew in camp! No dishes to wash 'cause you eat from your foil.
I like your real world experience. One can tell you've experienced it all. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. You're right most of us aren't preparing for a survival situation. I just got into bush crafting/camping as I just retired.
man I have been watching survival videos for a long time and I dont think I have ever seen anything like this. I love it. Usually when I am in a situation I improvise with stuff that I do have to fill in the gaps with the stuff I missed or forgot. I used to watch McGyver all the time and loved all the neat stuff he could do with just random stuff lying around. I also never seen the meat log cooking trick. Will have to try that. Wonder if you lay it on its side if it can cook fish too. I dont see why not.
Well in today's day and age... Where the the world is heading I won't be to quick, to say minimum survivalist videos. These are the videos that people will remember watching - which will save our **** in a bad situation. Great video as always.
Thank you for showing us these really brilliant hacks. Most of us would never have thought of these methods to get us out of a spot of bother. I really appreciate your knowledge. 😀
The physics behind heating water in a plastic bag due to waters heat capacity and phase change is mind blowing. I know I can't explain it correctly properly. An awesome useful hack.
Your mention if issues with aluminum foil brings up a key point most people don't realize...the principle ingredient in anti sweat roll ons is the aluminum is the active ingredient!!!

Yo! Jackass from bama here.. Idk what it is about your voice but I was absolutely intrigued by the whole thing. The first video I’ve actually watched end to end. Your voice is so damn, doomsdayish but calming as a waterfall.
New favorite channel!
Greg and his voice reminds me a bit of Sam Elliot.

Hi, I still love camping, I love to watch your videos..Lots of love & luck all the way from Glasgow, Scotland , UK..x
Hey Greg, hope you’re doing well Sir!Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Party! ^^
This is my favorite bushcraft channel! You show us really practical things.
When the coffee is done with grounds on top. Just put a little bit of cold water on top of coffee. All coffee grounds will go to the bottom instantly. Old campground secret
As much as I like coffee, tea is the much better hot drink to bring.
I do it every day with my French press made coffee.
It makes it taste smoother for some reason
@@peetsnort Thanks! I will try that tomorrow. I hate to wait for the coffee in the morning.
It's called cowboy coffee. I make it on the stove daily. Cold water after of a rolling quick boil. No filter.
Greg, you are my favorite contestant on the series alone ❤
Basically cooking those eggs with a campfire sous vide. I love it!
That's what came to my mind too. Cool hack!
I love this wholesome, tricks from grampa kinda video. Handy, practical tricks anyone can have fun with. Love it.
On the can of soup, just pop the tab open enough to break the seal to vent, but don't remove it completely until finished :)
Makes very good sense !
The water bag trick is new for me. Thanks for sharing!
I would say for the soup, don’t have to take the lid off, just a little crack to vent the pressure
True, but then you can not shake it
@@johannes7110use a little stick to stir.
Tin foil and stir would work too.
Thank you, Greg.
I used to make a very tiny opening to any can before heating it.
This is got to be my favorite video!😂 have to share a lot of laughs and very helpful hacks.
Back in my army days we had tinned rations. Lots of the blokes would push one side of the tin in before cooking, when the side popped back out the pressure was up in the fan.
It was sort of early warning.
I didn't do the unopened can, I saw too many blow up.
Finn is so funny, when greg pulled out the big knife, Finn got up and left the scene 😅 great improvise camping ideas greg.
Lol
Hey, Greg and ❤️ Finley ❤️. Beautiful views there this time of the season. Hope you and the family are all well. Can't wait for the bestie and I to use some of these tricks. Give Finley a huge hug for me!!!!
Thanks!
The bacon and eggs in a paper bag comes to mind from the boy scouts 👍 I'm so glad I found your channel, it's great, keep it up buddy!
08:45 I just found this out and remembered this video, cooking in a can is not advised unless the inner plastic lining is burnt clean, it could be bad for your health.
Greg always watch your videos when I feel down love the videos you and flower are AWSOME the alone show was great
The timing of the dog's reaction to the big knife 😂😂😂 was like oh dads got the big knife. I'm out 😂😂😂
Love the channel Greg hope to see what’s new on your end!
As a chef, I love learning new things. Thanks for the education. Greetings from New Orleans. 😊
Love to see people thinking outside the box 👍🏻
Me too 💖
I love bush life.
Seems like the best Uncle ever.
Cheers
Great video friend thanks again and please keep the great videos coming friend. From Scotland 😊
I love how Fin darts away when you pull out the big knife.
The boiling the eggs trick was the best.
Except boiled eggs absorbed the water they're being boiled in. I don't think Ziplock has designed these baggies meant for cold/warm storage to account for extreme heat. No doubt it's leeching all sorts of chemicals. Enjoy at your own peril.
There's no one like Greg Ovens. I'm glad to see you are well and still rockin' dude.
If you don't want to try the hand grenade soup can method, you can just wrap it in foil to cook faster.
Or just make a small hole in the lid?
I loved this Greg. As per usual the entrepreneur of the bush. Great ideas.
Just another tip if you want to sink your coffee grounds just pour a tiny amount of cold water over them and the cold water will frag your grounds to the bottom quickly 😊
Tip: If you have Attention Deficit, you definitely need to take the lid off those cans before heating them, otherwise you’ll have scars, too.
Yup, I have a scar on my leg from 1979...
Hot food from an exploding can stuck to my leg...
You rock! I love your videos Greg. Keep your catch and cook coming please.
Thanks for the video and nice shirt. From Oklahoma!
I like your real world experience. One can tell you've experienced it all. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. You're right most of us aren't preparing for a survival situation. I just got into bush crafting/camping as I just retired.
Greg is a pro at forgetting things👍🏻😆
man I have been watching survival videos for a long time and I dont think I have ever seen anything like this.
"Where did I put that tin foil?" LOL
What tin foil?? 🤪
@@redpillnibbler4423 watch the video! A joke you may get!
Wait.... what IS tinfoil?🤕

Aluminium 🤫
Cracked me up too!!!!!
Greg, thank you for the videos. One of my favorite people to root for!
Well in today's day and age... Where the the world is heading I won't be to quick, to say minimum survivalist videos. These are the videos that people will remember watching - which will save our **** in a bad situation.
Great video as always.
been watching you for years on tv and the internet thanks for all the knowledge.
That dang dog makes me so happy! Just sticking his nose in all the time..what a beautiful beast 😊
Thank you for the great tips. I am enamored by your buddy in the background. Shephards are awesome!
Your mention if issues with aluminum foil brings up a key point most people don't realize...the principle ingredient in anti sweat roll ons is the aluminum is the active ingredient!!!
Thank you for the down to earth ,educational , honest and commercial free vids. In my younger years while working constr. on a natural gas pipeline I heated canned foods in the exhaust pip of a D-9 cat. Retrieval of the can was accomplished by a little more throttle.
Looking forward to the video
Love this guy, just a great attitude along with a vast amount of experience.
Bad day now a good day because Greg vid
