I have a new found appreciation for what it takes to move a really big tank. What is the biggest tank you've ever moved and do you have any tips?
There is moving big tanks and then there is moving big tanks in tight places with stairs and no room to move which creates a whole new lot of problems. Luckily the biggest tank I have moved was a 6x2.5x2.5 and that was on level ground so I used a Lift table, a couple of flat trolleys and gravity.
Biggest tank I’ve ever moved? A 550ish glass aquarium into Rico’s basement 😂😂😂. That thing was no joke. Pleasure meeting you.
Should have got them to build it on site.. it would cost more but saves people getting injured and a ton of hassle.. Awesome tank though can’t wait to see it up & running..
5000 gal display in multiple pieces. 1800 with a crane. Communication and the right tools is key.
Sounds incredible!
Why not just have a large tank like that built in the basement vs risking injury
Ask the Egyptians
👊👍
What are the exact suction cup handles they attached to the tank and where can I purchase them?
That tank looks heavy!! people don’t really understand how big these tanks really are untill they see it in person. U can imagine the dimensions in ur head but when u see it it always looks way bigger than u thought. Good job on moving that tank down those stairs!! 👍👍
👊👍
You're at the point where you remodel the home to fit the aquarium lol
🤣🤣👊👍
Tanks over 6’x2’x2’ should really be built on site. It’s relatively easy to lift bigger tanks with enough people. The problems start with doors and corridors. You end up with people either end struggling with no possible way of others helping them.
👊👍
AND ANYTHING OVER 200 gallons......ACRYLIC!
On a positive note, if you got stuck in the basement, it looks like there's enough room for someone to squeeze a sandwich down to you crazies! Haha, nice video! Take a look at my 1,000 gallon (plastic) tank - I was able to roll it across the lawn by myself =)
Build a ramp out of the stairs with plywood and 2/4s
Bwahahah, every time I watch this video I chuckle... oh the things we do for this silly hobby of ours!!! Bwahahahah
I'm currently working on a harness and strap setup that will allow 8 people to move up to a 1000 gallon tank with relative ease and very litte strain on the back. Prototype will happen but have to figure out where to sell it. Similar to the harnesses appliance handlers use to move large appliances into homes.
Im looking for a 500 gal also but wow yes you need to have people that know how to move them , I moved a 220 and that wasent fun lol
Curious what the black euro-bracing material was under the glass euro bracing? Was that acrylic?
If it was me, I would mounted so huge aquarium in the basement for sure 😃 Think it would be easier.
Why did I feel like i was trapped in that basement with you lol. I started looking around for shit to help
See, the Egyptians didn't built the pyramids.
OMG!!! I shop at Aquatica for my fresh and saltwater tanks!! The Korean guy in the aquatica shirt is the owner and he is so nice and smart when it comes to the hobby! Love it there!
👊👍
The LFS store that I worked for would hire a piano moving company for whenever they had to move something over 500 gallons. And those guys knew how to move something that weighed a ton and also cost a lot. (Keep in mind grand pianos can cost over $30-50k)
👊👍
Thats a great tip, wish i read that before I personally had to move my 400 gallon with my landscapers lol
Hire a company that moves gun safes. They have the expertise.
I wonder if it would be easier to have the glass brought in, and assemble it on site?
why not just build the tank on site? I have a 4 meter tank in my basement, just had to get the panels in a a couple boxes of silicone.
Alot more money👊👍
Certainly enjoyed the whole saga. Very interesting. I built my 1000 gallon aquarium at its location. Only way to move, will be complete disassembly..
Big tank for sure. Was it glass or acrylic?
Hello.. Its actually DIY Plywood and Glass.. Its my 3rd Plywood build.. Ive had it running for about 2 months now.. I really dig Rico's tank !
Thanks 👊👍
countertop movers are the ones that can and know how to move large heavy stuff
I guess I'm not buying the 480 gallon nomore
The best way is to build in place, period.
Only you and Rico one way in one way out how did the other 2 guys get down there past the glass. Something smells fishy
The other 2 guys were really skinny that was my nephew and the owner of aquatica, but it was after Than dislodge the tank they were able to shifted it a little to one side to squeeze through.
I saw Rico's video but I had to cheat and fast forward to the end and see the tank in its place first then I went back and watch the rest of the video because I couldn't take it. Your video was no problem to watch lol. Thanks for sharing.
👊👍
Have a link to that video?

Quote of the day “but I actually did it!”
Watch the video on Rico channels, it's quiet something to do ! Didn't know about Rico's back. Glad everything went ok, so heavy and chance to break something very high !
wouldn't it be easier to assemble tank inside ? Btw Than, you must be quite tall, this room is barely high enough for you
👊👍
I dont know..big glass tanks have a way of giving way after a few years or so. I think I would be less nervous with central bracing. I have a 240, 35 year old acrylic and you cant make those leak if you tried. I just get used to the scratches-lo.
Scratching can be unsightly but at least it is reparable with some effort and the right tools. The bigger issue I see is crazing and the damage caused by organisms like coralline algae.
And my best advice would be to have it built in the room that it’s gonna be set up in. I know sometimes that’s impossible but for the amount of money u gotta pay for the tank I would spend a little extra to have someone come build it for me
It's alot extra 👊👍
I can't imagine the weight of that monster
My back can🤣🤣🤣🤣👊👍
Around 4000 pounds with water,
I'm planning to move a 200 gallon glass tank. It's the Elos 160XL. What suction cups did you guys use? Do you have a link:? Or maybe I can take them off Rico's hands? Thanks

@@tidalgardens Thank you Dan! Love from California
Glad your all still alive! Lol, great video and y’all are crazy! 👍
me too!
You out did yourself there Than. Rico better be grateful for you risking yourself for him😁
That's what friends do! I'm thankful for good friends like Than that came to help in this situation. This was not easy by any means 👊👍
Rico's Aquariums l totally agree Rico, it’s great to have friends that will turn up to help you when in need it’s one of the things that make our lives what they are. 👊
Glad Than is ok too cuz I wouldnt want the Tidal Gardens name to refer to a resting place. Dont wanna hear no Reef In Peace.
Hey man i love the tank! Where did you buy this from or where did you have it made?
This is insane, lol! Glad everyone made it out alive and well, sounds like Rico will soon have a few opportunities to risk his life for your tanks as well 😂
#ReefSquad :D
Hopefully he won't have to risk his life!
Not going to lool through all the comments to find if this has been said but wouldn't of been alot easier to just have it made there in the basement?
Building on site is an option, but from every place I talked to, it is substantially more expensive. It might make sense if the builder is coming and building a LOT of tanks but for a single tank, it might double the cost.
Is it going to be bare bottom?, hate to look at that pink foam, when the adrenaline kicks in, watch out,!
I am pretty sure he's putting in a substrate, but even still you would not be able to see the pink foam through the side glass (it would look like a reflection). The only way to see it would be to look top down.
What is the dimension of the tank?
Took the usual summer break from the hobby and it's funny, I missed all the YT reefers!
Glad to see you back👊👍
Dang that a huge tank 😂😂😂
This gives me severe anxiety.
You said it was only you and the bad back dude, then we see 4 men down there???
We were able to get too skinny guys down there by shifting the tank over to one side a little bit👊👍
That Tank is a beast! Its going to look SEXY! :) Than - you are very brave!
I was just at aquatica 2 days ago! Than they are lucky they had you.
👊👍
Do you have a link where I can order a hydrolic trolley like that
I do not sorry.
Glides and slides.
Hire professional riggers. They are slightly cheaper than emergency room bills.
How racist sir.
Maybe! But how fun would that be😁👊👍
How thick is the glass? please!
3/4"
What the name of those thing they use to suction hold the sides
glass suction cups - amzn.to/39LWFP7
I would think that people who move pool tables would have a lot in common to aquarium movers.
Derrick Haydocy I had a single piece pool table and had to move it a couple times. It weighed a few hundred pounds but nothing close to this beast. Most pool tables are sectional and fairly easy to move. Pool table installers may have strong enough equipment, maybe. This tank was a nightmare compared to a pool table I’d bet.
It was No!!!!! Joke at all 👊👍
444 Per4mance p
You have 10 this size coming? Did I hear that right? Holy cow!
Yup, the first batch will be 10 tanks. It will be roughly half my new building. I haven't designed the other half just yet.
Tidal Gardens wow...and to think I keep debating on the best 70 gallon to upgrade to. Lol.
Ten tanks of huge size for personal fun? Or are you a business selling giant tanks and all the rest? Are you going glass also?
Some people just god dam....m crazyyy
🤣🤣🤣Thanks 👊👍
Holy Jippers...man tht was a tight fit kudos to those guys who moved it.....really impressive logistics here folks.....
Wow, I'm working on a plan to move my 180 Gal. class tank that weighs 446lbs. Looks like I'm going to need more straps and those glass suction cups.
Link for the suction cups please
I think they are these: amzn.to/2XzG361
Rico’s last tank was very impressive and definitely a goal for many. But, I just can’t get past his daily live videos and “calling out” on people. I just want to learn from the best not see you act like Macho Man.
Side note: I’ve read people getting tanks built built in their homes. My only thought to that is sure they got it built in their home but will they get it out?
The whole "calling out" on people was just a joke man
MikeTheReefer yeah, a joke by the DIY king.
It's all good! The past is the past moving forward to bigger things👊👍
Rico is a drama magnet.
Ist like I’m watching a really good scary movies god just make it happen 😖😅😅
Hi! Im about to move my tank its only 90 gallons. Do you know what suction cups you used for the move? Im looking to buy some for an easier carry. Thanks!
These are the ones you want: amzn.to/2N37133
Better build the tank in the basement.
A lot more money👊👍
NA TOO SMALL ,NEED A BIGGER TANK!!
🤣🤣🤣👊👍
Great video hopefully he is doing better. It was a successful move and no one died
Forklift for you!
Oh yeah. I'll be renting every piece of equipment that has an outside chance of being helpful.
How much was the cost on one of those tanks.
Custom tanks this size have a wide price range depending on features and the builder. It could be anything from $5,000 to $25,000.
Would it be better to build a tank this large in its final space instead of moving it into place? Remove carpets so tanks and ramps can be moved easier? Buy a house with fish room on first floor or walkout basement? Build the house around your dream tank!
I asked Felix from Reef Savvy about having tanks built in place and at what point that makes sense. He basically said if there is no way to get the tank into the place (door size restrictions or on the 40th floor of a building) that is the only time it makes sense. The cost of building on site I guess is astronomically high.
Tidal Gardens I’ve seen Mr saltwater tank and Melev both use cranes and forklifts to place tanks safely but underground basements are the most problematic. Just be happy that your new place is a barn sized place with huge access points! But you had the advantage of building around the tank layout plans (my guess). Very brave of you to put yourself under half a ton of glass-was that after a few beers?
😮
Who manufactured the tank?
Exotic aquariums👊👍
I agree on the comment of TheAugoti, build on site. I saw the video on Rico's channel and hoped you would share your footage, thanks for doing so.
The team work was great and well organised until the bottom two steps. This is where, as they say " if you fail to plan the plan will fail " On the bottom steps a small platform needs to be erected to bridge from the penultimate bottom step to the floor. This will then alleviate the pressure concentrated on the lower corner of the tank. You could even go as far as rollers to ease the free movement of the tank into the basement. Great video and an excellent project to work on, looking forward to the follow up video.
Than I watched Rico's video the other day and commented that if he moves the next people are gonna have a nice tank cuz there is no way that's coming out. He replied he was taking it with him. Will you be helping in that endeavour? Btw that is a nice shirt.
I don't think that tank is ever coming out of the basement in one piece.
Just a question but why wasn't the tank just built sheet by sheet where he wanted the tank, a lot easier to take sheets of glass into the house and down the stairs
Get mad at it and it will submit.😠
🤣👊👍
Lol sound a little claustrophobic.. Lol good u got out haha..
You are a true gentelman reefer Than. If I build a tank large enough ill fly you to Jamaica to help me move it. Morphine might be a stretch but weve got even better, "Marijuana-phyllia". Lol. You dont dose it. It doses you. Now thats a great coral to propogate. LOL.
Lol🤣🤣👊👍
If money isn't to tight I would think that a good moving company would have the skill to properly move something this large and fragile. Rigging companies as well are good at moving large objects but can be really ruff on things. This just required a lot of patience and Than power. Get it🤣
I wouldn't trust any moving company on this beauty😁👊👍
Looks great! What is the thickness of the glass? And by the way, you look pretty tall! Or is the ceiling quite low? lol
I Think Mister Saltwater tank does instalations like that. Check his channel
I think the best advice is don't, l built my 8'x4'x3' out of plywood & in situ, even then it took three of us to roll it from it's face down build position to upright. Paul UK
👊👍
OMG how is his back
Not good! But I will live to see this through👊👍
Contact the guys at ATM they work with huge tanks all the time
Wow that last shot puts into perspective how deep that tank is front to back. The fish and corals will get lost in there...
🤣🤣👊👍
Called impromptu, real time, better be in the moment .... Just seeing the weight not supported while on the scissor lift made me cringe.... All good now :)
There was a couple of moments that had me cringe🤫👊👍
At some point, its easier to build a tank on site than to try moving it.
Oh no!!!! I hope that Rico's back gets better. Thank you Than and everyone else who helped to make this happen❤
Glad your still here.. I think I'd start going into withdrawals without tg new content 😅
Please let me know where I can get those blue cloves he has as his rock cover. I see stuff online about it being invasive and no one seems to sell it
I watched Rico’s video and noticed you in the background at a point a few times. Glad you shared this on your end. I can’t even imagine going through that and what you did. My buddy and I moved a 125 down into my basement. It was an incased sideways stair, not a walk out. That’s no comparison to what you guys did though! Way to save the day!!!
👊👍
You: So it’s just me and Rico down here in the basement, with no way for me to get out.
Me: LOL! Some jokes just make themselves!
broke back Rico
Than I know you didn't go in there thinking you wasnt going to sweat a little. Lol. Lifting days are never over brotha!
🤣👊👍
omg effing hell i just blew my back too just looking at this video.
👊👍
Hope I see you use that crowbar, because as we all know..... without Than, Rico wouldn't have that tank in the basement
It wasn't pretty and I'm glad there isn't any evidence because it was very unsafe.
@@tidalgardens I totally understand!! I do appreciate what you do for the hobby. My fiance and I love your videos. When I get this new reef tank up and going, I know where my next corals are coming from.
well done
😁👊👍
Nope.
🤣🤣🤣👊👍
Handy knowing rico he’s a big lad for helping moving stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
👊👍
Didn't realize how tall you were. Don't you have a second floor in your new building?
Yes, there is a second floor, but there won't be any tanks going upstairs.
wow
👊👍
Great video definitely a nail biter ✊🏽🙏🏽
Glad You’re ok Than! Congrats Rico! You’re lucky to have good Reefing Buddies
Thanks brotha👊👍
