I was afraid on what you were gonna say on Frontiers because although it’s a change from the zoomed circles we’ve recently been getting it actually felt like a fit to the overall vibe the frontier landscapes gave off.
The Generations 3DS version was similar to the console version, but it was red instead of green. This version of the reticle is also the one used in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
sonic unleashed reticle is still my favourite. there are just about zero levels with green as a primary colour so using green to stand out from sonic’s colour scheme and the enemies colour scheme was a super great idea i feel. the lock on sound effect too did its job incredibly.
I get what you're saying about fancier homing attacks, but I think when you get into the grit of it, it doesn't have to be super decorative. At the end of the day, if it fits the overall design of the game and maybe has some animation flare, simple is probably the better way to go. I don't enjoy Forces, but they probably made it green because there's already a ton of red going on in the visuals, which would've made the homing attack harder to see. Green is complimentary to red, so we'd notice it faster. Edit: That said, I'd have picked a white or yellow for Forces so it'd fit the color pallet for the majority of levels better. Maybe white with a yellow stroke or vice versa.
Personally, I always wanted it implemented in the least obtrusive way possible, a colorless simple thin-lined pair of brackets would be enough for me, no beep sound, no animation. I think spark 3 is like that. I also believe homing attack could very likely be tuned to just do what you feel it should, with no indicator, by advanced input reading methods now. It never constantly broke in adventures, it was just inconsistent in specific areas, and when paired with the bad forced camera. From back since then I think it could be perfected.
Trivia: the Homing Attack may be based on Kamen Rider’s signature Rider Kick, as both are diving attacks that form the signature move of a hero’s arsenal.
