Considering Sonic's relaxed nature, he only tenses up when he's attacking.

8:21 The reason why Sonic looks weird when running in 2D is because when they were modifying the Hedgehog Engine from Sonic Lost World to Sonic Forces, Sonic moves slower when running left to right and faster when running forward and back in Lost World and it was brought into Forces so it's impossible for Sonic to reach his top speed without boosting or with a dash pad.
Yeah lost world felt wonky with that and when I felt it again in forces I was just like ughhh why didn’t they change those physics
@@oreogod1985 it’s because between the break of lost world and forces, most of the time was spent making HE2, and sega didn’t give sonic team any more money to develop it. By the time it was created, they only had a year to make the game, so they had to pull from lost world which was the latest iteration of HE1 which would be easier to work with (because of the updated features like 60fps support). Once again another issue of SEGA not caring for sonic and rushing them. Same people that tried to sell super sonic as DLC too.
If sega gave them the money and team to develop HE2, forces would’ve probably pulled from gens physics or at least feel close to it

Unleashed has the best Sonic animations imo. Was my first Sonic game, and will always be my favorite, the animations being one of the reasons.

Since Adventure actually started development on the Saturn before switching to Dreamcast, but they put the work they already completed into Sonic Jam
Yeah really love jam and what it did to lay out the future, and it’s such a tiny adorable game lol
I have a soft spot for SA2 because it looks so spastic. To me, he has so much energy because of how exaggerated the animation is and when you pair that with the speed of the animation, it looks crazy.
And his walk almost looks like he's trying to do a dance. I admit it looks wack, but it's also why I love it and it's my favorite walk cycle.
I didn't mind SA2's top speed being sporatic at all, I like it since it feels like there is air-resistance that sonic fights off as he hits that higher speed. It's also probably an effect of them trying to make his steps and bobbing real, but fast, but with sonic's cartoony short legs, so the bobbing is super frequent. In the more cartoon-styled games he usually stabilizes at highest speed animation, but his feet don't seem to exactly match his steps and the ground.
Yeah, the low speed animation is really janky, but the top speed actually looks really nice specifically because it has a bit more “bounce” to it: SA1’s fluidity is also very nice, but SA2’s animation trades some of the Grace for making it look more like sonic is really going full tilt
@@spindash64 That's exactly right. The jittery element to the animation makes it really feel like you're really running as fast as you can, which makes it leagues better in my eyes than later games where it feels borderline sleepy like Sonic isn't even really trying or feeling the physics of his speed. I feel similarly about Shadow's own skating animation in SA2, where it looks far wilder than any other following version. Like I get it, with hover skates he technically *should* be able to *carry* the speed he has better than with actual running, but I always preferred how there he looked like he was building all his speed through actual motion and not 'boost energy' or whatever would explain his new movement. It reminds me of the motions of an actual skater trying to build speed.
this is kinda related to the running animations, but I've always loved the sound of Sonic's footsteps in the games. just the fact their there is cool enough, but they also have it speed up depending on how fast he's going and even change how it sounds when running on different surfaces. e.g. metal flooring vs grassy areas. I think frontiers demonstrates this the best in my opinion, especially since the game only encourages you to go fast but never forces you. it allows you to take in the smaller things as well as be wowed by the more larger things.
Turning up the volume in frontiers’s open zone is amazing to hear all the little details like how you e said the footsteps. They did a great job with the atmosphere in frontiers

The unleashed and Generation ones aren’t quite the same. Unleashed kept Sonic’s body still as he ran leaving most of the motion on his legs. In Generations however, his body lightly bobs with each step he takes. It’s a subtle little change, but it’s there.
There’s another big difference which is what makes generations my favorite. When sonic is starting to run as he gets more and more speed his arms slowly extend backwards aswell as his hands slowly opening fully once he reaches max un-boosting speed. It looks way more natural than unleashed and I’m shocked they never brought it back. It pairs nicely well with the fact he squeezed his hands into fist as he’s boosting and putting a lot of effort.
Another thing is in generations when you boost sonics legs actually stretch out further making his strides seem even longer.
It's very hard to notice in gameplay, thanks to the boost aura but it's a nice touch

Generations reuses Colors' running animations.
I know that it probably doesn't count because it's a mod, but my favorite running animation is from Sonic P-06. He has an added top speed animation where he puts his arms right behind his back and clenches his fists. Also the bounce he has in the mach speed sections really add the sense of urgency.

@@alezlukee I had a channel before this, same title, 3000 subs after 2 years of work but because the settings and the monetization got screwed up, the channel isn’t really usable, I’m still trying to fix that channel but it’s a waiting game and also a bit of a loss now. Trying to get 4000 watch hours is extremely grueling so I’m really trying everything I can. But yeah that’s the situation lol

I love when sonic runs with the camera zoomed out, as his large head to small body proportion makes him look specially tiny. You really feel like a rodent running at full speed.

Not the review i was expecting tbh. I always thought sa2 had by far the coolest looking animation especially for shadow. I’ll never forget playing the toysrus demo how impressed i was by it when i was a kid even by the way they jumped
Shadow's skating animation was by far the BEST in Sa2
Not too sure what OP sees in Shadow the Hedgehog game's animation but that one was the worst. I liked how his body stretched when he jumped but his skating animation sucked and he looks like he squashs down too. 🤢

I find the SA2 top speed animation is the best. It really looks like he is planting his feet into the ground and propelling himself forward. Shadow's best top speed animation is here too.
Lost world mach speed has a really good similar effect too.

I love in generations that he opens his fists at top speed. It's like he's going so fast that the wind resistance makes it where he has to uncurl them.
Y'know which one I like? Shadow's animation in Forces. The way he skates in it is just really, really smooth, and it doesn't even look bad in the 2D sections

I don't know what it is about Adventures top speed run. It just feel so damn appropriate for Sonic at the time. It was literally perfect.

0:33 someone developing for sonic CD must’ve seen the bobbing motion and thought it was either a spriting mistake where it wasn’t aligned properly, or they just wanted him to seem like he wasn’t putting as much effort into running and made it smoother, making sonic seem naturally faster
I do prefer sonic 1/2, but I do believe the dev had a reason to change it or it would’ve stayed the same like most of the other animations

Just realized sonic 1 and 2 have a lot of uneven pixel art as terrain, and in CD the terrain is usually flat and metallic. It was probably realigned that way so sonics feet will always line up with the floor
I've always felt like Sonic CD's jog looked odd in comparison to the other classic games and I just couldn't put my finger on why. Thank you xD

0:51 say what!! 😮 I actually think Sonic 3 and knuckles has the best Sonic running animation, as it’s the most detailed of them all. I like the Sonic 3 model over the other two games for this same reason.

Fun fact: sonic adventure was originally going to be on the saturn, but it was decided to make it a launch title for the dreamcast, and sonic jam uses an early sonic adventure engine, explaining why it has the same running animation
Adventure 2's is great. I like that he puts in so much effort to jog and run. Shows that even though he's in this little body, he's STILL going to get the job done. Even if he's pushing his limits. Perfect to me.
That running bounce that Sonic has in DreamCast AV1 is so satisfying 😌

The Sonic movie Running animation is Dope as heck
I kinda prefer gens as colors/gens as the 3D sonic run animation more that unleashed, but both are really good. I like how more loose sonic feels in gens and colors, and the gens build up to his speed is more right to me than in unleashed and colors. As for 2D, i say advance 2/3. Really neat and I always liked it as a kid, also cause of sprit videos I see with it.
I like Frontiers' animation. His movement looks more dynamic because his head slightly bobs side to side. It's easiest to notice in Cyberspace 1-2

By far, personally, and in my humblest of opinions, the SMOOTHEST transition from standing still to walking slow to walking to walking fast to jogging slow to jogging to jogging fast to running slow to running to running fast (basically still to top speed) goes to Sonic Unleashed. Hands down.

I think the big killer of the Sonic 06 top speed run is his hands. They are wide open, flattened vertically, pointing directly to the side. Those giant hands seem like stiff parachutes that should be slowing Sonic down, and it looks wrong. Like, Sonic’s run usually looks good cause the arms are either purposely used or trailing behind, not out to the side looking like a hinderance. Heck, someone like Mario has his arms out to the side when he runs, but his hands are positioned to make his body look like it’s almost gliding, making him seem faster on his feet than 06 Sonic
Theres something about the jitteryness of secret rings and unleashed Wii that I love. I can appreciate the blur and smooth feeling of boost sonic, but there's just something special about going fast enough that frames just start disappearing from the animations.

Just a few things I'd like to point out that I see absolutely anyone talking about it:
Quills drag
It's when Sonic quills fall behind his head due to the speed he's running. Games like Unleashed/Colors/Gens do this, making his head sort of like a U shape, while games like Sonic adventure doesn't, keeping the shape of his head normal without taking into consideration the speed.
Unleashed/Generations animation
Even if they look very similar they're not the same animation. In unleashed the head movement is a vertical bopping, while in colors-generations his head moves side to side, making it look a bit goofy when viewed from above.
Animation interpolation.
The way multiple stages in sonic animation works is by interpolating his different animations based on speed.
Lets say that speed 0 is his Idle pose, 30 jogging and 60 full running. If his speed is something like 45, it's going to try to interpolate the jogging and running animations, and because of the diference between arm movement (one pointing forward, and other backwards) it's just going to look like Sonic is flailing his arms in the middle, like the forces example you just gave.
Wow actually really appreciated how in depth you went here, never actually noticed that about generations. And yeah that does kinda make sense to me why forces has a jank looking 2D run
My favorite sonic running animation is the one from unleashed. It’s just…I dunno, there’s something so charming about it. It’s complicated to explain. 😅😊
If I was making a sonic game, I would include that animation (with some tweaks to try and make it look better) and it’d be just perfect for me.

My idea for a running animation is when Sonic is Boosting, there's a Peelout aura, circulating around his legs to his shoes
the games where he really looks like hes pushing himself to go fast look the best. lost world and 06 mach speed, the 3d special stages of mania, as well as the boost mode of sonic advance 2 and 3. the fast jog animation of rush1 and heroes also show a great range of motion. riders animations especially at the start of a race also come to mind as being very smooth with great speed transitions, as well as the tricks being amazing.
P.S. the lost world mock speed animation was in forces, though slightly altered. Take a look at sonics double boost animation
Video game animations are underated art. And animation is one of few thing that work in Sonic. Sometimes.
The Figure 8 Peelout animation will always be my favorite.

8:17 It's not a seperate animation but rather just the run and dash animations being blended together. It's happening because the top speed is decreased in 2D sections, which was already a feature in Unleashed, Color, Gens and even Lost World
8:31 The running animations in Forces are completely different animations from what we got in older games, far from similar. I also have a suspicion that the boost animation is from Sonic Runners.
9:34 Just a quick note, I'm pretty sure SEGA recycled the Lost World mach speed animation in Forces, but it's used during Double and Triple Boost sequences. I could be wrong though but check it out, since another viewer said the engine was tweaked from that game.
I’m pretty sure double boost is the same animation, doesn’t look too different at least I think so
as clean as the boost era animations are, i kind of preferred the ones from say, the adventure games, heroes, 06, and lost world a bit more. there's not a whole lot of motion in his animation in the boost games, all that really moves are his legs. I liked how bouncy or animated the rest of his body was in older animations, makes it feel like he's actually pushing himself to top speed, still look great, just more a preference thing i guess

Always loved SA2's running animation. I love the bob and weave and the sporadic movements at top speed. Imo it adds a level of 'realism' to the fact that he's running stupid fast. The modern games make it seem like he's gliding along his feet opposed to running and you know...connecting with solid ground at varying heights, inclines, and declines. When he's running down the building in City Escape it honestly looks fine; he's not gonna be running in a perfect straight line when scaling a building that isn't perfectly flat
People really expect a living being to move at Super Sonic speeds and not expect a bit of sporadic movement

I'm sort of surprised Riders isn't on here. Sure it doesn't make sense being on a hoverboard, but in Zero Gravity's case, you can tell better running cycles if you choose a gear like "The Crazy" which runs on ring energy and therefore makes you run when at zero rings. I think it looks pretty smooth and transitions well when you grab a ring and get back on the board
I feel like frontiers with the original classic run would be really sick.
In SA 1 his shoes become pointier, and stretch and curve a bit upwards to make the U shaped motion at max speed look a bit smoother

I just how in the adventure games, sonic's footsteps look like they actually influence his speed/movement. In the more recent games, the animations don't seem to match his speed so he looks like he's sliding on the floor
