Given Wizard's level of expertise it's not a disservice to get the 308 working from aftermarket/inauthentic parts. He's kept the project affordable so that the car can be used in the real world. Trying to OEM restore a car like that would've taken not just a lot of money but also extra time away from being able to actually enjoy driving the thing.
There's an argument to be made that if you're trying to keep an older car concourse quality, buy the factory part. This car, however, is not only a model so common that their values will never equal the true classics of their era, but it's long left the condition of being worth the time, money, and attention to keep it concourse-quality. If anything, the choices Wizard has made has salvaged a car that would've been destroyed as a car not worth the effort, and kept another fun to drive car on the streets. Sometimes a restoration requires a concourse level of detail, and sometimes a restoration requires a swap of parts to make it serviceable and drivable.
Great job, Wizard!
I think replacing the alternator with a stronger, cheaper, more effective unit is a perfectly acceptable move. I sincerely doubt a non-OEM alternator really takes much of anything away from the overall Ferrari
Fuckin A. I agree.
Plus, going aftermarket takes advantage of 40 years of experience and tech advances.
To say nothing about being able to replace it, if it breaks in BFE
For the small unobtainable plastic bits, you might want to look into 3D printing. There has to be a way to get them recreated for a not too ridiculous amount.
Can't wait for the dyno run.
You're right there, 3D printing is the answer to many prayers for classic (and not classic) car restorers
You do relize that they make some that print metal right?
@@DeathracerXD even better then
Daniel seemed like a very serious guy at first. Glad to see him loosening up! Seems like a great guy to be around.
I don't think he is comfortable on camera, seems like a very knowledgeable mechanic.
@@nicko6710 He's getting there though!
In the Porsche 928 world, it was discovered that with the addition of a few washers, the alternator from an '88 Chevy Camaro V6 could be installed and worked beautifully at far less cost, so this sort of thing is not unusual.
Great video!
I once had an 1990 nissan sunny and the alternator failed working. My scrapyard-guy gave me the tip to install an opel/GM alternator "backwards", worked flawlessly and cost 20 Euros for an used GM alternator. Nissan wanted SIX HUNDERED euros for a new one
@@Daemonarch2k6 Nice!
Any alternator can be adapted easily, same for AC compressors. Just make sure the belt still fits, alternatively look for longer belts.
@@Daemonarch2k6 Why don't you just trade it for a GM car?
@@MiGujack3 Mostly true. Some vehicles come with mounting lugs that are just not compatible with all alternators or compressors without major modification. Most of the time it doesn't usually take that much work to get one to fit, a little grinding or some washers will make it work. On the 928 the Bosch/Chevy alternator basically bolts right in, it just requires a few washers to get a tight fit.
As to AC compressors....That is some deep voodoo that I wouldn't personally mess with~
I am a big fan of how you have repaired the car! Sticking to a budget and making things work like a real life project.
I only pay full price if I 'have to" and have no other option. LOL
The way I see it, if Ferrari couldn't get it right from the factory to make the car actually work, as a car...then by all means upgrade and modify as needed to make the car WORK. And doing so on a budget makes it even better. Because in this case, the car now has an owner that respects it and loves it. It isn't a fashion statement sitting in a garage now collecting dust and rotting away. I love seeing old beasts that didn't get the respect they deserved even from their own creators, being made right.
Mrs. Wizard shifts her gears so smoothly and precisely 👏👏👏, my kind of Lady driver 😍
That was quite enjoyable to observe
The AC should be connected BEFORE the tuning, as there are a big section of idle tuning done with AC in most ECU I have seen.
I love this project so much, and I would love to see Tavarish's reaction to how far it's come.
Yeah. Even the doors are back on. BUT don’t let Tyler test drive it !! That guy is brutal with his wheels.
Wizard is one of my favorite car UA-camrs! He's a working man, still very interested in cars most of us could afford! Even though there are a few supercars in the shop, that's not all he's about! Love the content!
Wizard, you hit the Lotto when you found Mrs. Wizard. She's great and good with the camera, too! She's the kind of woman I'm looking for! Smart, funny, cute, and shares your interests!!! However, I think you'll have to hide those 308 keys!!! LOL!
I love how seriously focused on driving the Ferrari Mrs. Wizard is. 😅😅😅
Corsa exhaust might be a good choice. You would probably have to get just the muffler then modify it. The corsa sounds great on my c4 corvette, and there is no drone.
A grand for an alternator, that's a bonkers price. With a bit of research you'll probably find a lot of the parts were taken from other manufactures such as FIAT and Lancia. You could probably get the parts you at a fraction of the price.
So nice of the car wizard to let Mrs. Wizard drive HIS car.
😂
its HER car... he just says it's his... 😎
0:00 But CarWizard say " The 308 is road worthy" . Not " MY 308 is road worthy " . I guess CarWizard prefers not to sleep on the couch
You aren't married obviously
Only 23 years. That's why I say HIS, gotta lay ground rules early. 😁
Would be cool for you to use Hoovie’s detailer. They could probably bring the paint back to life!!
I’m pleased to see the real-life progress with the car, Wizard!
Congratulations on your pragmatism about the alternator and getting a reconditioned brake master cylinder.
It can be disproportionate buying a new, expensive part for a car which is no longer new.
I’m looking forward to the post-tuning experience of the car.
The alternator hack was great!!!
Amazing result, can't wait to see it tuned and with an exhaust. Wizard please do a video with the tuning guy, will be cool. Daniel, I take my hat to you, great job
Congratulations on a wonderful restoration. Mrs. Wizard has a great Ferrari!
I love the alternator fix 🤘🏽😊
Love how Wizard gives his mechanics a chance to speak for themselves and be the faces of their work. What a boss.
Hey Wizard! When doing the turn signal stalk repair make sure to use a plastic repair solvent and not glue. I've seen a lot of talented people make that mistake. If done correctly and after a proper curing period, the repair can be sanded and polished to be invisible. Also, it should never discolor or separate and should be stronger than the surrounding material. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
That stalk has to be shared with some Fiat or something. It might not be the same exact shape, but it'd have the same mounting and electrical connector
@@JB-mk4ry 1975 to 1978 Lancia beta iirc, or something similar you have to take the column stalk apart but it's the same lever and mecanism
Over on ColdWarMotors one of the agents, Steven, rebuilt a 308 turn signal switch. Can't remember the episode, but they pulled it apart and went through it in detail. Probably a similar failure to what is going on with this one and fixed for very little cash. Just time.
I'd really love to see this get a full detail when everything is done and the paint correction is done, it would look so sweet with a good polish. Maybe team up with AmmoNYC, he's amazing.
Exhaust wise I would look at ANSA. These are period Italian tuner/OEM exhaust systems and at least a quick google Search found a 308 kit. But I'd double check if that's legit or a fake branding.
What I like about Mrs.Wizard is that she's familiar with 3 pedals. That's a win in my book 😎👍
Yeah, she seems very comfortable with doing some clutch work! 👍👍👍
In Europe that’s the most usual thing in the world
@@javiff1 In America almost no one can drive stick. Especially my generation. 99% of new cars sold are automatic.
@@squidiz496 in Europe and further east it’s 99% use manual shift and 1% have automatic
My Nan here in UK drives a manual, she's single too.
Wizard you need to keep Daniel happy, Straight Pipes for the Win!
"lots of little things" remark made me chuckle!😅😅
Great Wizard video! Need to see the process of exhaust fabrication and more of Daniel’s expertise. Love the oem +
I have substituted several parts on my 52 Plymouth where the original replacements were either unobtainum or very costly to buy. My car is a driver and looks stock. So I certainly can see the logic of doing that on an expensive car like The 308.
Well done you guys. Lovely to see Mrs. Wizard running the 308.
Im so happy you bought this car, you've done an awesome job bringing her back to life!
SHE LOOKS AND SOUNDS CLEAN! GOOD JOB YA'LL I LOVED WATCHING THE STORY WITH THIS CAR! :D
The car is nice too.😄
Awesome alternator mod. I love this kind of thing. Tenth of the cost and off the shelf part.
Not sure why anyone doubted you guys getting this running right. I never doubted you. I'd be curious to hear it with a flowmaster on it.
Glad to learn that the 100-amp truck alternator was a great fit. This is a significant improvement over the 55-amp alternator.
Congrats Mrs. Wizard! Glad to see documented proof of you driving your car. :) But in all seriousness, congrats Wizard and team. Thank you for taking us along on this journey. Yes, please let Danielson take the car out to impress.
Good Job Daniel!
And it's nice to see Mrs Wizzard having a blast. Nice ride!
One of my Top 5 Favorite cars on UA-cam. So Glad It found a Great Home after the bad treatment it went through on "Car Trek" Big Thanks again You Two for takin' on this expensive project.
I am so happy for y'all!! What an awesome car. Thanks for the cool videos man.
Looks super sick Mr. @Car Wizard! Can't wait to see what you do next!
Worked for Ferrari Houston in this cars time and this is a blast for me. Definitely not the factory mirrors. Cant wait to see it pain restored - its gonna be fantastic and use the EU bumper up front - So much better looking. Great job guys!
Can't believe you're not taking it to Van Go or whatever that place Hoovie takes his cars. It might not be a museum piece, but a car like that deserves to look it's best.
So great to see Mrs Wizard’s red Ferrari on the road finally!
Easy fix on the alternator- first check that all the wires from the alternator to the starter are connected- sometimes on wire might slip in the sheeth and be hidden/ forgotten. Second the alternator regulator can be replaced along with the brushes to renew its life.
Good to see Mrs Wizard finally driving it, as for the mods , good way of keeping its driveable
Legend has it: The Car Wizard naturally faces the magnetic North.
I love the old 308s!
Using other components that make sense was the reason I started watching your channel. As well as what got me started watching Tavarish with the Lamborghini. Car is looking great. Your shops innovation on the car are refreshing.
It is great to see you get this beauty out on the road. Congratulations Wizard!
WOW...been waiting for this one..sooo freaking cool man. Happy for you guys.
Loved the smiles from Mrs Wizard diving the car
Great progress!! Hopefully, after the tune, the engine doesn't 'overheat' as the cylinder heads are notoriously, let's say, 'weak'.
Can't wait to see the post tune vid!!
Nice job, you stuck with it and not only that it's iconic but it will always be beautiful.. Worth getting the body together..
YES!!!!! Flow master would be an assume experiment!
Amazing you found a match on the charging system... Outstanding customization... Mr and the misses bringing us neat stuff 2 watch. Cool
Total transformation wizard. Good job sir
I am very very impressed at your clever thinking when it came to the alternator upgrade. Nice job!
Congratulations Wiz. Looks amazing.
Wizard,
For the exhaust you really should do it before you get it tuned. If it was my car I would build a custom set of headers & exhaust. I would delete the catalytic converters put the largest flow through muffler that would fit. That should give you the best flow while keeping the sound to a reasonable level and making it sound incredible. If you are decent with a TIG welder and buy a couple boxes of bends it is fairly easy to make your own headers. If you doubt your ability to design it, a set of exhaust modeling blocks are a great tool to have.
Slow and steady you are getting there. Excelent sunday driver...
Just rewatched the Car Trek video season with Freddie driving this. Great job. Looked like it was a goner. Great rebuild Wizard! 👍
Great work Wizard. Your wife is going to love that car.
So glad to see your getting closer to completing the 308 renovation. Such a nice looking car!!!
Wow! Congratulations Wiz family!
If the wizard lets his wife drive it then you know it is solid. Great job wizard
Glad to see this as a complete car again. Watch out for the in-tank KIA low-pressure fuel pumps: I just got a recall notice for my 2016 Optima SXT where they are Extending the warranty for the low-pressure fuel pumps due to failures in 2016-2020 vehicles made in the US assembly plant to 15 years or 150k miles. This is like the 4th recall I have gotten for my KIA, but still the nicest cat I have owned, and as a now-retired bike commuter, it only has 30,340 miles after 6 & 1/2 years. Keep these beautiful project cars coming! Looking forward to more bus conversion videos too.
Hello Mr Wizard I love cars like this one amd repairing and sorting out problems and making them run very good 👍 😀
I completely agree with the market parts fitting to these old cars, once they're not intended to concours! The fun is what really matters!🤘
Awesome ride!
Excellent approach, best of luck.
Straight pipes would make a beautiful noise. But after an hour on the highway it would just become a noise.
Mad props for things like the alternator & fuel pump upgrades. Remember, Ferrari themselves often raided the Fiat parts bin when building their cars, so there is no shame in adapting better, lower-priced alternative parts.
Yayyyy for Mrs. Wizard. Finally. Magnum P.I. bliss. Flomaster. Tune and dial her in. Little cosmetics. Beautiful vehicle.💖💖😎😎👍👍
Thanks for the 308 update. It's nice to see this nearly ready to be Mrs. Wizard's daily driver. Hey, you can sell her Maserati thing to pay for a $7000 muffler!
Great job guys, love it
01:32 - I was waiting for her to say: "WIIIIIIIIIZARD!!!"
Cool car and amazing work. Fun to see two real mechanics come up with economically practical solutions to fix an exotic car and not just change parts. Please don’t forget about the Malibu 🙏
Finally, just in time for winter!
Joking aside, it should be a nice cruiser for the fall weather 😁
Also, check the fuel leveling hose between the tanks. It's often been overlooked by "cheap" previous ownerships.
The mirrors that go up and to the side are the 288 GTO mirrors.
Great save with high amp gm alternator/that's why your the WIZARD!!!!
THANK u from nyc(rust belt)
Yaaay it’s done 🎉
YES! Flowmasters would be amazing!!
The original 1978 mirrors were more square and slightly larger.
Congratulations Wizard and Mrs Wizard on being Ferrari owners!
I'm so pleased for you both it's fantastic!
Once those little issues are sorted it will be a brilliant usable supercar.
Thanks for posting.
nice little sunburn on mrs wizards left arm...fitting to the colour of the car...
I like your channel so much. You and Mrs Wizard are really great fun people!
Finally to see Mrs. Wizard enjoying and operating this fostered 308. Good thing happening for that car.
When I lived in southwestern Pennsylvania, I took my car to an automotive electrical specialist. He rebuilt my alternator and actually boosted the amp rating with appropriate replacement electronic parts. GM cars were notorious in the 80s for having underpowered alternators. DeLorean used GM engines and alternators and had serious issues with power draw and had to recall all their first-year models to install a heavy duty alternator; Johnny Carson had one of the first DeLoreans and was embarrassed when he showed it off at a party but couldn’t start it because the alternator wasn’t sufficiently recharging the battery.
Nice to see Mrs. Wizard looking happy about the car!
Hope the other guys at the shop aren't reading (they're probably great mechanics) - but Mr Daniel-san (is this the correct japanese spelling??) is by far the most camera-friendly. For some reason, people seem to be really rooting for the guy. Wish him long and successful carreer at the Omega Auto Clinic - and somehow, look - due to the magic of youtube, the name of the shop is known even in Latvia. Congrats on getting the old Fiat... nah, the old prancing horse on the road. At what age do horses become geriatric?
Wizard shown a 10SI and told that he wants to install a 10SI and shown a 12SI installed on the car!!😄, 12SI is very good alternator one of best designs ever, better cooling, easy to repair.
I’m happy to see the Ferrari on the road. Ms, Wizard looked great driving it, you could see the joy on her face. I’m interested in how the Flowmasters would sound. You have the technology, you can rebuild it, make it stronger, faster…I’ll stop now.
Borla exhaust would be nice on the Ferrari 308
Congrats Mrs and Mr wizzard. Looks and sounds amazing.
I loved this project. Looks awesome
JB WELD for the signal stalk. I have done on several different cars, use the qwikweld
Great video.
The alternator thing is crazy.
Especially the stock one being so borderline in a performance car.
And this is pretty common from manufacturers to play really close to the minimum needed alternator power and that plays hell with every other electrical system in the car.
You putting twice the alternator power in this Ferrari will likely put alot more reliability in the car.
And saving thousands of dollars is good old American ingenuity.
Yes, a proper sounding exhaust would be great. Glad to see it on the road after all this time.
Hello Mrs Wizard magnum Pi and Mr Wizard PI I just love that project you have remodeled the car and I just love your genius on all of the cars you work on even the other cars I'm a big fan of yours I'm retired of being a professional mechanic from Textron Specialized Vehicles ok take care
Mrs. Wizard looks cool behind the
Wheel . Was hoping for big grin.....
But that's what happens when you're
Cool.
Mrs. Wizard looks really good behind the wheel of the Ferrari! Maybe you should just let her keep it!
