Its protective stowage for the 30 cal. The vertical arm folds towards the rear, tip the barrel down and into the cover. Extra weight and work, but someone thought it was helpful.
It was helpful because lots and lots of this tanks was transported by ships as a land-lease to USSR and as reinforcement to US army. And to minimize the amount of parts sticking out and potentially be damaged or damaging to people this protective case was made. Though I think the primary idea behind this part was to protect .30cal hmg from rain and mud while not in battle
Never understand why they didn't make the turret just wider.
@@LokkieF I dunno, tbh
@@LokkieF would have meant a major design change, which would have needed approval up and down the chain of several large army bureaucracies. Had they done that the M24 would have been in production before the change was approved!
This way it was as easy as slapping on some sheet metal and be done with it. Not sure where it was done, but wouldn't be surprised if they were shipped from the factory without it fitted but with the precut pieces of steel in the tank, and then had it bolted or welded on in an army depot, making it at least on paper a "field modification" and therefore much easier to get approval for.
Yes, the US Army bureaucracy was as bad during WW2 as it is today.
exactly lol
@ 20:50 - The hollowed out part is the other half of the .30 cal mount and stowage. You spin the .30 cal 180, remove a pin and swing the.30 cal down into it’s stowage, typically for “transport”, rolling down an interstate or on a flatbed on rails.
The side mounted machine gun was supposed to be use by either the tank commander or a foot soldier could climb up and use it. The gun itself was folded back and stored in the side bin to prevent damage when going through wooded areas and enemy light arms fire.
Didn’t that appear on the Chieftan’s Channel.
@@user-wf2lm3vi7o it wasn't fitted on every M5. Probably depends on which plant built it, which army depot stored it prior to shipping overseas, and which unit was getting it.
Gonna be building one of these for one of my employees that's Dad was on one with D Co. 714th Tank Bn. 12th Amd. Div.. Good video recon. Thanks Andy!
Man imagine how cool a 1/16 with full interior would be
Patience..
Takoms FT-17
Hey Andy! To answer alot of questions, just watch "inside the cheiftians hatch" and then go to the episodes about the stuart. Bit that turret side thing, it's a protective shield for if someone uses the caliber 30
The tracks are the highlight of the kit. Very beautifull. 4 hours per track. Good relaxation!
My wish has been answered. I can't wait to start a build and weather this kit. I am excited!
It’s a very Nice looking kit. And I think your build really did it justice. 1/16th scale armour is peaking my interest more and more. 👏😁
Another great build.Might try 1/16 scale myself soon, and would definitely consider this kit 👍
We have a Stuart in my hometown center park. This brings back memories!
Enrique putting in work on those treads! as soon as Andy said ".. and now comes the fun part" holding the tread sprues.. *gulp* fun?
Great build - looks gorgeous.
I just got this kit and I am very happy with it so far. One thing I would recommend is that if you buy it, to at least cut out all the parts for the tracks first. This will cut down the number of sprues in the box to something a bit more manageable and you may actually be able to close it. There is a lot of plastic in this kit but a bit of organization will help make it a much less overwhelming build.
I have been dripping with anticipation at this one, wasn't disappointed.
Amazing work. Beautiful but frighteningly complex kit. The Stuart is a favorite tank.
thats one of the best kit tank models iv seen its detail is fantastic great work !!!
Love 1:16 scale they are so hard to find in nice models.....
Just awesum as usual. Love the 16th scale builds! Looking forward to more of them!
love the 1/16th kits
Aw heck yeah! I live the stuart, and this 1/16 looks amazing. I hope to find one.
The shield you ask about was to protect the AA.30 cal from ground fire when stowed. The M5, simply had a pole mount for the MG. No protection for anybody shooting the weapon. The AA mount was designed for use from inside the tank.
Love the background when you're talking to the camera. The store is looking awsome.
It's all relative, but it's great to see some smaller models coming out in this scale.
Wow Andy, she’s a little beauty. A real nice build video from start to finish. You were lucky to have your friend build the tracks for you, mind you a good movie or music and you’d knock them out in a few nights. Hope the new sized store is working out well. Thanks for all your videos mate, take care, kindest regards to you and family. Kenny.
It looks like a great little tank to build in 1/16!
I enjoyed the build. You building the main gun made me laugh. I reenact with the 14th Armored Recreations, I have installed the M6 breech many times. At about 60 pounds it is fun had by nobody. 1/16 scale looks to be a breeze. Thanks for sharing.
This is the kind of kit that needs to be 1/16 scale!!
Will be opening this on Christmas morning!!!!! And if I’m lucky the Luchs as .
I want to profusely thank you for doing this video as I am currently building this kit. Your Heads up on several construction issues saved me from some serious headaches! Has there been any talk about aftermarket interior parts? Thanks again for all you do!
Beautiful kit Andy, really hope they do come out with more 1/16 American tanks. Hopefully they have better instructions for future kits.
I like this tank. It's very nice
Hey Andy, nice rundown of this kit, that I will now build. Be interested in seeing you do your top five 35th armour kits for largest parts count.
You have been one very busy person. Love it
Great looking kit can't wait to build this one nice job Andy Steve 🇬🇧
the side skirt on the turret is just to protect the 30cal and if you look at the 30cal mount you will see it pivots into that protective skirt
A truly great build and a fantastic model, many thanks for this.
I used to drive my models through a mud bath, let them dry and scrape off the excess mud. Worked great as long as you didn't bump it too much.
Nice looking model wood like to see you build the trumpeter panther in 1.16 scale Andy
Interesting kit !
Thank you Andy... it's great that you've been churning out all this content recently.... I finally have something great to watch since I've waiting for the notifications saying that you have released a video.
Btw, that plate on the side of the turret is for spaced armour, to protect the tank from recoiless anti tank weapons (like a bazooka or panzerfaust) because these weapons work by explodign on impact. The shield would pre detonate the panzerfaust's shot before it hit the tank
Very nice and useful build Andy, these 1/16 kits are great but don't half take up alot space on the shelves!
Enjoyed video. Great pointers & detail. Look forward to the next!
oh my .. i got this kit some time ago and just started building it. the roadwhells on 4:00 to 6:00 i made working - this little arms really are difficult. on one side of the bigger you can easliy fix it together, but when the wheels are in the other side is freaking - but i got it
It also functions as brass collection, preventing casing from jamming the turret.
Great looking build.
Could you make the models with all the running gear movable so we can see how that works out? (You can glue it fixed later)
On this particular kit you can't really make it moveable. Classy molded the main horizontal suspension arms together. On the real tank. they operate independently and one or the other can go up and down under spring tension. But, in the kit, they can just pivot back and forth like a see saw, and the range of motion is minimal at best. Just about 2mm.
Exceptional Andy. Keep up the good work.
31:35 Accidents can happen - and for some of us they happen more often than for others. However, I think it would be very useful if you could do a tutorial entitled Correcting Mistakes. Such as if you glued something in the wrong place, and need to get it off without smashing the entire model.
Another great build Andy! Keep up the great work. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
They is a 1/35 scale kit with a tank rider using the side mounted gun with his right leg inside the side shell
Nice model!!! Given that you probably rushed the build in order to have the video done, you still managed to produce a nice result. This is obviously not a "weekend" project... and it has a ton of improvement and super detailing potential. Very good insight on what the kit has to offer. Good Job! Definetely gonna get one. I really hope they might do an M8 based on this kit as well
I am building the kit now. It is basically accurate but most of the detail is really soft and not very well rendered. Much of it is underscale, too, like all of the welds. Things like bolt heads that should be hex shaped are just round gumdrops and Classy has mis interpreted some raised bolts and made them countersunk, and some internal screws are represented as external bolts. Ovarall it has the detail of a 1980s Italeri kit just blown up to 1/16. For example, the Browning .30s are just one piece each and you have to drill out all of the holes in the cooling jackets !
@@davidnickels3325 Ohhhh my... I will have to think twice if I still wanna commit to building one. I mean, probably correcting all of it will require the same amount of time it'll take to build three or four 1/35 scale models. So many kits... so little time. Thanks anyway, David! Will follow your build with great interest!
Nice video. You could have the tank in a maintenance Diorama.
What I assume is that the hollowed portion under the side machine gun is do it to be maybe folded into or taken apart and stored in it something.
Spaced armour
Some weird shaped armor then I guess
Looks awesome Andy! Can't wait to buy it :)
How would you compare it to the 1/16 Takom/Ammo Pz 1 you just made? I'm in the middle of it, like it, but it is a little rough around the edge (seams, some of the sprue connections). Excited for more 1/16 coming out!
Found the same, way more seams than I’ve found with other 1/35 Takom kits. Quality control, like the 2 halves weren’t joined properly, but everything has seams. Also suprised by the appearance of so much flash, since it’s a new release. Some sprue’s are good and some bad, hit and miss. Fit issues too. Much slower build.
hi all! great job Andy and thanks for keeping us informed. It looks like this Tank was out already when I did a search. when and wear will this Tank be available again?? Looking forward to building this Stuart Tank.
OH Bugger, another one to add to the collection!!!! pst don't tell the wife!!!
Andy, don't you think this scale is the best for tanks and makes weathering easier and more realistic? Excellent vid!!
Man. You get to PLAY EITH ALL THE COOL TOYS! Thats awesome. $$???
outstanding keep up the good work
Haha, I asked myself that same question about that shield since the late seveties when I build the Tamiya 1/35...!
I don't know what it is but just looking it I think the gun swings down into it to lower the profile of the tank and protect the gun.
Stop wait a minute!!! too many models :D
There is no such thing as "to many models" :)
@@randomnickify Right is right but time isn't infinite :D
very cool looking build sir
Amazing video,
Love them Andy .
Truly uncredible .
I will stick with 1/35th scale.
Great build Andy.
I built a Verlinden Pro. Tiger I
1/16th scale .resun and metal etch....back in mid 90s it drove me batty...lol.
Now there are styrene kits in 1/16th
Your a brave man Andy.
But it was a commision build.
Anyway Andy always look forward to your vids, always interesting and look forward to watching them.
Very nice weathering and chipping!!
Cheers !!!!!
Don Frandsen
Great video Andy. My only concern is the tracks. The instructions have the pads on the inside of the track yet when you look at photographs of the real thing the pads are on the outside. So this process has to be reversed to put this right.
Im wondering , all the war time vehichles don't show a lot more bullet damage or other damage , your weathering and ageing effects are great .
It's to stow the machine gun barrel to protect it when traveling
Awesome All I can say just awesome
Very nice.👍
Very nice Build
Nice work!!!!!!
Great build Andy . Could you use staples for scope guards.
Andy I don't know if you noticed but you installed the left hand back road wheels on the wrong way round.
I noticed that also.
Nice build Andy! Not a big fan of this scale (or the Stuart) but really like the finished product 👍
It seems that the piece in question on the right side of the turret, under the 30 cal. machine gun is a protective housing for the gun. I believe that the mount unhinges and allows the entire gun and its mount to drop into the protective armor and it's open design allows for quick access. There may be some sort of spring assist allowing the operator to quickly pull the (heavy) gun up into action and perhaps, automatically locking into position by a spring latch on the mount.
I think the hollow box is for stowing the .30 cal and protecting it :)
You and 47 other people. 8-D
Anyone know if this or other common tank kits (Sherman, etc) come with an interior? Looking for a good larger scale kit with interior. Great build by the way!
Why you always glue the moveable parts?????
He doesn't manage to get them built in working condition. Not even in 1/16.
But don't worry...he'll always tell us, that it will be much better in fixated condition. 😁
S1NB4D it’s honestly what I do. Get it just the way I want it, and leave it.
I've got a 1/16 scale Tiger tank. I've had it for years but been scared to work on it, don't want to screw it up.
1/35 is the correct scale for military land vehicles
Check the bogie wheels on the Left side rear.
andy is this a display or is it a remote control ? i can get for it
I'm looking for a remote control version of this one too.
static kit and not designed to be operable, really. Although I am sure someone will do an RC conversion. The suspension is mosty fixed so just the wheels roll. But, it is not durable either since it is not made with bearings or anything.
Those side fenders were probably for the British version.
I just wish that Tamiya, AFV Club, Trumpeter, etc... would make armor/ship/aircraft models (kits) in scales common to model railroaders (G-1:20.3,HO-1:87.1,N-1:160,S-1:64,and Z-1:160) as well as 1:35, 1:72, 1:16, etc... O-scalers, though, do have 1:48 scale armor kits. to be honest, Trumpeter did make some 1:35 railroad-related models, but all German prototypes.
Now, if only we can get the iconic Sherman (with interior & engine) in 1/16 scale!!! The Tamiya RC static kits are too costly!
Is there any interior detail? I think I saw an engine on the instructions? What about the crew compartment? Any chance of posting the instructions or would that be a copyright issue?
I know it’s extremely painstaking, but it looks so much better if you just sponge the lighted base color, then ... put on the magnifiers and brush in the metal color by hand. I noticed things like that when judging. Everyone should judge from time to time, at least once anyway. Helps you to be a better modeler.
I felt bad once, when I judged at this one show, there was a 1/48th B-17, that had clearly brush painted camo, the decals were silvered and the fuselage had literally fell apart half way to the base of the tail. The other “judges” didn’t even look at, as I was telling them to hold up, “what about this one?”, a guy said, “hey guys, ... gentlemen? What about that one?”. He was pointing to the, shall I say, battle torn B-17, with the most heart warming smile of a fathers pride as he continued, “that’s my sons, ... he made that all on his own”. It was a turd, and I’m sure dad knew it, sitting right between a P-38 that took three years and looked like the shrink ray hit one in the heat of WWII and a highly modified P-51 kit recreating the current “Crazy Horse 2” that had immaculate foil exterior.
The kid got gold. Turned out, his was the only ‘youth historic aircraft’ entry... 👍🤪😂
David Fletcher explains all about the MG housing to hide in in his Tank talk video on UA-cam!
Very Nice 👍!!
Hey Andy. I was wondering if you built the 1/35 Scale Tamiya Hanomag German Halftrack yet? I was just wondering if you had any technics on bulding it. It is going to be my next build when I am done with my Hobby Boss ME 262.
Anyone else think this would be fun as the starting point of a diorama of a scene from "The 7th Is Made Up of Phantoms" episode of Twilight Zone?
If a kit comes with workable parts like tracks and bogies/suspension,,, would it be too much to ask for you to build them how they're supposed to go together and not just all glued solid because you got a bit carried away with the extra-thin please ?!
After all,, I thought this channel was to show us modellers how new kits are engineered and how they're supposed to be built...
Just a thought
Thank you
Hopefully when Trumpeter gets sick of making 1/16 German tanks they do a few Shermans
Sprockets turns or is fixed with glue ?
The thing on the side you can see it in the m5a1 Stuart
Nice model. How easy would it be to motorise the kit?
Chips are for kits......ooouh....😎
Tracks....why I do aircraft.😉
