We take a POV Ride on 2x Schindler Escalators outside the World Trade centre building in Rotterdam’s Beurs district (in the city centre). Built in 2020 and fully accessible to the public, these are a striking design in itself - even painted in Gold. They are almost a blend of escalators and travelators…
But, that’s easy to do, right? Yes, but it’s the fact that so much effort went into this set compared to normal that makes them special. They didn’t just dump an off-the-shelf model in and hope for the best. Because they’re outside, the bodywork is fully galvanised, the machinery is waterproof and the lower truss section is deeper with an oil separator built in to separate rainwater from oil before the rainwater drains into the general sewage. A clever design made to last. Plus the installation was difficult as the steps they replaced had to be preserved somewhere and also to winch them in wasn’t easy as the top section is right under a canopy…
