Den Haag, Netherlands. 7x KONE Escalator ride at Spui Metro / Tram Station - exit side 2
We take a POV ride on all 7x KONE escalators (though in no particular order) at the Spui metro station’s 2nd side exit in Den Haag City Centre (this is one of 2 stations for the main shopping street). There are 7 escalators this end of the platforms and 6x at the other - I have filmed them all. They are the type KONE Eco3000 E3X - installed in 2003. We also see a couple of the trams arrive. It’s a really nice station here…

    Is the O&K RSK related to the similar looking escalator model, the RT-HDLS?

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 3 дні тому

      @@KLEF710 Sort of - well, these ones are… The normal RSK is the travelator equivalent of the RTK escalator. Some Sainsbury’s supermarkets had them etc… But, these ones are heavy duty grade, and were listed as ‘RSK-1000’. I found 6 inclined travelators here like this. But in other areas of the terminal, there were a number of flat travelators listed as ‘RS-HDLS ….’ so these would essentially be the inclined version of those. Of course the RT and RS Prefix comes from the German words RollTreppe (escalator) and RollSteig (Travelator). 🙂

    • @KLEF710
      @KLEF710 3 дні тому

      @@EscalatorsAnywhere So the RSK-1000 ones here are a custom built model based on the design of the RS-HDLS, unlike similar travelators at Gatwick South Terminal shuttle station and the Manchester Airport Skylink, which are the ordinary RS-HDLS type?

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 3 дні тому

      O&K had a strange way with names on their rarer products. If you look really closely at the handrail ends and the metal balustrade ends on these and the Gatwick shuttle ones, they’re near identical, just these ones are inclined. The Gatwick ones are listed as RSA-HD-140 (a reference to the width). The older (1990-early 95) flat ones here are listed as RS-HDLS and the late 1995/1996 ones are listed as RSV-HD… The Manchester Skylink ones were the same - 1996 listed as RSV-HD… types. However, totally different to the proper RSV travelators released in 1997 to match the RTV escalator design. Confusing stuff 😅 because they used all the old running gear but used the VarioTronic401 system computer. In 1997 they had a complete design change and all new ones built after this were given the proper OkaVario Drive etc and the more modern shape…

    Marne La Vallée-Chessy Station, which is the station serving Disneyland Paris, has escalators which look very similar to these. Found out the model name of this type on the old ThyssenKrupp Fahtreppen website on Wayback Machine, it's called Niagara and was launched in 1987. I think the ones without skirt lights (like the ones I've filmed in Singapore) are also considered Niagara. The website is quite useful as ut contains a list of past model names from the Rheinstahl era (1950s). From what I've seen there, I believe the standard 1980s-1990s Thyssen type is called FT 72 and was launched in 1972; there was also a variant with under handrail lights called Cascata (FT 722), supposedly named after an Italian waterfall. Other few models that Thyssen had produced which I've never heard before were Amazonas (moving walks) and Smartsteps (escalator with fibreglass steps).

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 16 днів тому

      @@idl3k_elev That’s interesting! And yeah the presence or lack of skirt lights shouldn’t make the name change. It’s interesting because in England we were still seeing the older style too (like the gold ones that M&S in Cambridge has) until around 1990 so that type must have run alongside for a bit. But the first Niagara’s here were installed the late 80s too. M&S used them in a few new stores at the time as did other retailers and buildings. No worries. 🙂 I believe they started in the late 50’s over there. This was one of the very first style that we saw here, a few years later they were slightly facelifted, on those later 60s ones the O&K logo was engraved in the same place that the red diamond is on this one and the lights at the ends were wider and didn’t have any metal gratings… There was an intermediate type (I never saw in England, only Germany) from about 1970-74 with glass balustrades, the centre logo on the floorplate, squared handrail ends and still smooth steps - I wish I’d filmed them before but there was a set in operation in the Galeria Kaufhof in Gelsenkirchen til early 2023… The RT-LS then came along by 1975 and that put them level with the older manufacturers like Otis and Thyssen (who’d just acquired Rheinstahl in 1973). Rheinstahl’s 1960s escalators were incredibly advanced but by the mid 1970’s no company seemed more advanced than the other…

      @@EscalatorsAnywhere I think the escalators I've filmed in Quer Passage shopping center in Kiel, Germany might've been an "intermediate" O&K type as some features that you mentioned were similar and they're from 1973-74. They had tiny O&K logo engraved on one of the handrail ends and an old fashioned direction light on the upper skirting. Not sure if they're still there or not, last time I was in Kiel was two years ago. Apart from that, the footbridge that goes between the shopping center and Holstenstraße used to have a set of three old 1970s Rheinstahl/Thyssen escalators based on old photos of Kiel that I found on the internet. They were removed in the 2010s and a pair of two ThyssenKrupp Tugela escalators were installed. Rheinstahl's 1960s escalator design was really beautiful, distinctive and almost look like art deco to me! Haven't been on one yet but I found one derelict Rheinstahl escalator from 1962 outside the cruise terminal of Bremerhaven. You can find the video on my channel. The same retro design was also adopted by American company Montgomery in the U.S. due to a licensing agreement between the two company at that time. Their 1970s type wasn't as beautiful as their 1960s type but still looks nice; the same design was later carried over to Thyssen after the acquisition and continued to be produced (with minor facelift, of course) until the introduction of Velino in the late 1990s.

    By 'cheap generic escalators' I assume you're on about the Anlev Stannah things? On the National rail platforms at Tottenham Hale, there's one of them which was installed in around 2017/2018 and every time I've been past, it's been broken. Yet further up there's a Kone escalator which is probably around 10-15 years older and runs perfectly. Even the Victoria line escalators, which are the original Otis? escalators from the 1960s run better than the Anlev.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 18 днів тому

      @@KLEF710 Yes. They are horrendous those ones at New Street. Nearly half of them in the station were broken on my recent visit with some totally boarded up for major repairs. It was such a poor idea to use cheap products in such a high traffic environment - they were never going to cope. Any major infrastructure venue needs to be using one of the ‘Big 4’ for their escalators. The only way to solve it would now be to fully replace them with proper escalators because each repair they get, they’ll just break again. I remember reading an article shortly after they first came into use after the station’s total refurb saying they all had to be thoroughly inspected because the drive chains had cracked in a few of them. 😕 A heavy duty Kone, Otis, Schindler or TKE if properly maintained can take the strain. Generic stuff usually can’t…

    Like all O&K escalators, these are very nice. These are very common in shopping centres. The Bentalls Centre has lots of these still, including a really long up one which passes about 3 floors. Lakeside Shopping Centre has quite a few of these left still despite a few having been replaced with Schindlers when it was still owned by Intu. The Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon has some of the first of this type, with some dating back to 1984. There's also some old travelators there which resemble the older RT-LS series, which have been modernised and are now branded as Kone.

Kone replaced all of the original 1987 O&K travelators in the terminal in 2009/10 (except for one short one in departures that was just taken out and the pit was covered over with a different floor). Fortunately that meant they were still built in the Keighley, UK factory rather than overseas as Kone finished UK production in 2010 - so these are the last of a kind. 🙂 For some reason the travelators in the link from the South Terminal to the Shuttle Train to the North Terminal were retained even though they are more heavily used!
