As a 52 year old wife and mother of 3 adult children- I grew up in the 70’s. It’s refreshing to see you cover this era- the music back then was and still is amazing….timeless! Great job guys! Thank you.
I was so thrilled when you reacted to Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin Love." The singer (Paul Rodgers) and drummer (Simon Kirke) from Free later formed Bad Company. But Free's hallmark was guitarist Paul Kossoff's sound. No one before or since had a tone like his. RIP Paul. Finally, bassist & pianist Andy Fraser was no slouch either. This song has that awesome bass hook in the middle. Of course, the appeal of this song is its simplicity. I've heard different mixes/arrangements of this song on box sets & re-issues of their albums, and they all suffer from too much production & polish. This (classic) version sounds like you're right in the room with the guys. -JR in Miami
I was so disappointed when I heard Free was no more, until I heard Rodger's voice again with the newly formed band, Bad Company. The first time they came to Seattle for a concert I was one of the first in the Arena. Seeing a talented singer and band when they're young and full of fire and promise is something you'll never forget!
The sheer pleasure expressed in Amber's face upon hearing parts of this song is so heartening. How pure! How uplifting is its testimony to the beauty and magic of music!
Thanks Stan, something tells me you choose your words wisely and for the benefit of the good hearted who still have the ability to hear words of encouragement as you express your own joy in their exploration of music. Bravo Sir ! Keep it up .

Paul Kossoff playing one of the greatest solos of all time. Andy Fraser laying down an inimitable bass beat. Simon Kirks powerful precision drumming. And Paul Rodgers defining what it is to be a rock singer.
Free (Spirit) formed in 1968. This tune was released in 1970 from their album Fire and Water. These lads' ages at this time were 18 - 20 years old. 😮 They were just kids! Testament to the phenomenal talent in this rock n' blues outfit. Just wow! 🎶🤩🎉
You guys are SUCH a breath of fresh air, with all of this tragedy that continues to hurt our country... THANK YOU! Your family is beautiful - you are so lucky & blessed!! ❤ Hugs, from Mesa, AZ 🌵
That "cowbell-ish" sound you hear is something called "Claves". Basically 2 wooden (high quality tone-wood) sticks that you whack together. Lead singer is Paul Rogers... awesome - cheers
not that all claves are made out of mahogany but.. there is NO tone-wood.. mahogany, hardwood, is found in/on most instruments. sorry but it was talked about soooo much when building guitars and such and there is just no truth to it. save your money and just grab to jenga pieces and wack them against each other and you will have pretty much that same sound.
@@miou-miou- nice opinion. shove it smart ass P.S. of course different woods sound different when you strike them.... not build guitars from them. you are an idiot.
@@miou-miou- Sorry. You might be right that too much is contributed to "tone wood". But I have heard Paul Smith (of PRS) tap a Brazilian rosewood neck blank, and it has a pitch that it resonates at. As far as Claves go, even you could tell the difference between good claves and banging jenga pieces together.

It's a breath of fresh air every time I come across younger generations drinking from the fountain of classic rock. I believe it's important that folks like you should continue to keep these classics playing. There will never be an era of music like this again. Love your honest opinions and reactions. Thank you for keeping this alive. Andy Fraser's bass solo is simple but iconic. As a guitarist, I was always waiting with anticipation for this solo, and this one song inspired me to pick up a bass and learn.
The singer Paul Rodgers was only 19 when he recorded this. He then became one of the best soulful rock vocalists in history. The sound you thought was a cowbell is actually from a Wood Clave, a pair of hardwood sticks about 8 inches long with a small center drilled out core to amplify the sound. A percussion instrument rooted in afro-cuban and latin rhythms
Claves make sense, but my first thought was a woodblock on the drum kit. I remember listening to this on the radio and coming from my big sisters’ .45 rpm player.
Something worth noting which I haven't seen mentioned here by other people commenting: the members of this band were barely out of their teens when they laid this track down (in fact bassist Andy Fraser was only 17). One of the most extraordinarily talented ensembles for their age there's ever been.

Paul Rogers vocals are amazing! Andy Fraser’s bass playing was groovy, Simon Kirke’s drumming was stellar and finally Paul Kossoff’s guitar picking was mind-bending!
Paul Rogers Is one of the greatest rock singers of all time, So much soul And it’s so genuine with the cracks in his voice and everything. He has mostly known for being the lead singer of bad company
Paul Rodgers said that when they wrote this song what he was wanting was a song that they can end their concerts with. They were currently ending their concerts with a blues cover tune, but they wanted their own, so he wrote the chorus right then by singing it to the band and they went and finished the rest of it. This is the classic rock song from that era and Paul Rodgers is the icon of hard rock singers from that time.
The 1970’s was the greatest period of rock music. So many great bands that came from the time period. The singers could actually sing and the musicians could actually play their instruments, no digital cleaning up for them.

Free is a criminally underrated band. They weren't together very long, but this classic album was their best of a good output. Paul Rodgers (that is correct spelling of his last name) is one of the greatest singers in rock and roll. (He's pictured second from left) There is not a weak track on this album, 'Fire and Water' and 'Mr. Big' are just a couple more highlights
Free Live is their best album imo. Fire and Water was great but iI prefer the rougher production of Tons of Sobs and the way they slowed all the songs down on Live to amazing effect. Probably because Koss was so stoned.
I agree with you Bill about "Fire And Water." Actually, the whole album is stellar. And Paul Kossoff kicks all kind of ass. Best vibrato ever in rock guitar.

A shame about Paul Kossoff too. Paul Rodgers has been fantastic throughout the year's, decade's actually. He did a great blues album, I just can't recall what it was called.
One of the UK’s favourites. This was one of those songs that got everyone up on the dance floor back in the day, no matter what type of music you liked.
This is a band that was part of the British Invasion, and seriously influenced nearly every rock band to follow. Paul Rogers continues to be one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time.
This came out much too late to be considered part of the British Invasion ..I was there..ever hear of Freddy and the Dreamers? The Tremeloes, maybe? I didn't think so..anyway, just sayin'...
@@t.j.payeur5331 having been born in 1955 I was also there. Loved Gerry and the Pacemakers and Hermits Hermits etc. But lets face it, they were a trickle compared to later. Having had the honour of seeing them live back in my young years, they have not dated. It is one of the songs where you bounce around the room. Paul Rodgers has a great voice. You should check out more, he also sang with Bad Company. Jay its simply "Free"
Paul Rogers is the singer. He is the dark haired guy leaning forward with one hand on the floor, wearing the white sweater. He is one of the greatest voices to ever grace the planet. His later band, "Bad Company", was the first musical act signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song Records. Peace
Paul Rodgers is one of the best voices in rock! Even Freddy Mercury was a huge fan which might be one of the reasons why Queen asked him to tour with them after Freddy was gone. Check out Bad Company to hear more Paul Rodgers!
I am a tolerant man so, in the spirit of forgiveness, I am going to grant you a UA-cam Pardon after consistently spelling Paul's surname incorrectly :)
Well it's 5.20am here in London and it has been 5 long months ever since that mistake and it has still been playing on my mind but now you have seen the error of your ways it will be All Right Now... Good Luck :)
Lead singer Paul Rodgers is also the lead singer of Bad Company who did "Feel like making love". In the mid 80's he teamed up with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and formed a group called The Firm, lots of good music from both bands to dive into. And yes Van Halen's "Eruption" is a must.

Imo Free were the best band ever. They wrote this song when they were teenagers. Paul Kossoff is my favourite guitarist ever. He was so economical with his playing but every note and chord was so well placed. Simon Kirke was a great drummer, Andy Fraser an incredible bassist and songwriter and Paul Rodgers vocals were brilliant. Try out Wild Indian Woman and I’m a Mover. In fact you could do worse than to react to all the tracks on their live album, unimaginatively named ‘Free Live’
This is one of the greatest Rock songs of all time. Free are one of the sadly underrated British bands of the 70s. Every bit as good as any of those considered to be major bands at the time, absolutely amazing. The singer Paul Rodgers and the Drummer Simon Kirke went on to form Bad Company. Well worth diving deeper into Free. I believe the girl/woman he's singing about is Gloria Jones, who was in later years Marc Bolan's girlfriend.

Great one!!! You two are wonderful to watch; doing some real greats across the genres and your take on the songs are insightful, on point and refreshing!!!!❤️
After Freddie died, Paul Rodgers was asked to front Queen for live performances and did so. As part of the set, this song was always played. I watched an interview with Brian May a few years ago, and he said that one of the major reasons they asked Paul was because he (Brian) had always longed to play Alright Now! You can see, or rather hear, why.
When this album came out these guys were barely 20, their first album “Tons of Sobs” is considered one of the best Brit blues albums “Ever”. Paul Roders has had a stellar career, considered best blues and rock voice in the UK. Lead guitarist Paul Kossoff as you can tell just set the band apart from music of the time. A must watch is “Free at Isle of Wight”
I'm just wondering if you can call this "bullseye" or is it "onehunderdandeieieightyyy" when you are talking about CLASSIC ROCK. Doesn't matter this is song/band is ÜBERCOOL.period..

Another band you should check out is Humble Pie. “Thirty Days in the Hole” is probably their best known song. This is the band Peter Frampton played lead guitar in before striking out on his own.
On the live Humble Pie (Filmore) version of "I Don't Need No Doctor", you can clearly hear Frampton's backup vocals amidst all the chaos. And his guitar solo, Madonn'.
It's one of the best(fun) classic rock songs ever recorded😊❤❤❤Definitely one of my favorites growing up and now, still a favorite❤❤❤Glad you guys loved it too❤
In the UK this song has been on every pub jukebox for ever - and probably always will be. Listen also to Wishing Well, another of their classics. Free were so influential and, already great, would have gone on to be huge if Paul Kossof had lived. Their successors Bad Company were very good with Paul Rodgers singing continuing to develop but Kossoff was irreplaceable.
When I think of great rock classics this is near the top. This gem came out in 1970 and hit number 4 on the charts.Paul Rodgers is Phenomenal. A lesser known song by Free but none the less a great song was MY BROTHER JAKE. After Free Paul Rodgers and his drummer started the band Bad Company with hits like FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE and ROCK 'N' ROLL FANTASY.
So glad you found this one after doing Bad Company. The lead singer is Paul Rodgers and he's the guy in white in the photo. Its a classic. Much love from England 🏴
I love this. I was about 9-10 years old when this was played on the radio a lot. Still sounds great! Lead singer is the second guy from the left in the photo named Paul Rodgers and also sang lead in other bands including Bad Company. They're from the UK.
Many other rock vocalists and musicians will cite Paul Rogers as their favorite vocalist. They call him "the voice." If I recall right, his later band Bad Company (which you've reacted to before) was the first band signed to the Swan Song label, which was the label created by Led Zeppelin, so Amber's shirt is appropriate. 👍

This is one of a short list of "overplayed" hit singles that I never get tired of hearing. Ironically, a lot of them are from 1970, 1971. Oh, I love it when I come up on a jewel of a reaction from y'all that I have missed somehow. It's like finding an easter egg. Such an incredible song for an introduction. I could tell y'all enjoyed it. Your faces said more than any words could convey. 😉♥
Thanks to a very old album of my parents, I always think of this song, Alright Now, as part of a trilogy, in between Argent's Hold Your Head Up and John Kongos's He's Gonna Step on You Again. If you haven't, you should check out those other two songs, they're brilliant.
Free actually morphed into Bad Company, had all the same members. The Move morphed into ELO, all the same members also. Both Jeff Lynne and Paul Rodgers took control , changed their sound ( ELO more than Free ) and became huge!
The song was co written by the grossly underrated bass player Andy Fraser, who was 18 at the time, having joined Free at the age of 16. Not that anyone will see this, but on the off chance, search for Free at the Isle of Wight Festival and have a watch of the band perform "Mr Big" live. Sublime

Not only did Kossoff have incredible tone, his vibrato was to die for
This song was definitely played at all school dances and backyard parties! Everyone like to groove with it, dancing and singing along.

@@miou-miou- nice opinion. shove it smart ass
P.S. of course different woods sound different when you strike them.... not build guitars from them. you are an idiot.

Andy Fraser's bass solo is simple but iconic. As a guitarist, I was always waiting with anticipation for this solo, and this one song inspired me to pick up a bass and learn.

Here here. Isn't it great!
Wonderful song
Paul Rodgers.....the lead singer. He's in his 70s and STILL sounds amazing.
Yep, I've heard him twice in the last 4 years. He hasn't missed a note.
I saw him when he toured with Queen a few years ago. I thought it was a good choice to depart from Freddie. Paul Rogers is great.
Very true ! Paul is a phenomal vocalist ! Still has got the amazing power & stamina !
Bad Company live will blow you away!!!! ua-cam.com/video/BNmINbO9VyY/v-deo.html

The name of the instrument you were wondering about are called, "Claves." They're percussion wood sticks. 🙂👍
You're exactly right. Drummer Keith Moon of the Who played them on their song 'Magic Bus'.
I would like to recommend “Hurt No More” by the Aquarium Rescue Unit, you will not be disappointed. 😎
The 1970’s was the greatest period of rock music. So many great bands that came from the time period. The singers could actually sing and the musicians could actually play their instruments, no digital cleaning up for them.
The 80's were also great. Dokken, Tesla, Ratt, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, Queensrych, Y & T, Lita Ford, Steelheart, Legs Diamond, Metallica, Jackal, Cinderella, Def Leopard, Whitesnake, Kix, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Vixen.

Yes! ‘Fire and Water’ is probably my favorite by Free.
It's said that Paul Rodgers never sang a wrong note.
Free Live is their best album imo. Fire and Water was great but iI prefer the rougher production of Tons of Sobs and the way they slowed all the songs down on Live to amazing effect. Probably because Koss was so stoned.
im, 73 and still lovin tunes from my youth cos modern music is crap but i do love 70s soul
I agree with you Bill about "Fire And Water." Actually, the whole album is stellar. And Paul Kossoff kicks all kind of ass. Best vibrato ever in rock guitar.
Lead singer Paul Rodgers, one of the true great voices in rock n roll. Also sang lead for Bad Company, The Firm and The Law as well as solo efforts.

I think it was a tribute album to Muddy Waters. And you're right about P. Kossoff.
One of the UK’s favourites. This was one of those songs that got everyone up on the dance floor back in the day, no matter what type of music you liked.
"Let's move before they raise the parking rate." Such a great lyric!

This song is one I've played on repeat for hours without getting sick of it, which shows you how good it is. An absolute all-time rock classic.
My 1st 45

They did a fantastic studio album together as well.

In the UK this song has been on every pub jukebox for ever - and probably always will be. Listen also to Wishing Well, another of their classics. Their successors Bad Company were very good with Paul Rodgers singing continuing to develop but Kossoff was irreplaceable.

This was part of the "heavy" R&B movement. Great groove with a powerful riff and strong vocals. Keep going.
