Little story. In 1968, I heard Cream live in the basement auditorium of the San Diego Convention Center. Everyone sat yoga style on the floor. Before the band came out, the roadies carried out Ginger Bakers drum kit screwed to a sheet of plywood, and nailed it to the stage. I thought "that's pretty pretentious." I did not understand why until Ginger Baker, one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, started pounding on that kit during the concert. Holy Moley! During the concert he did a drum solo while Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce, the bassist, took a break. The song was titled "Toad". It is on one of their albums. Seeing them live at the onset of their careers in such an intimate setting is still a lifelong memory. You made me smile listening to this song.

Yes, this was a British group. Their first album, "Fresh Cream", came out in 1966; this song, off the "Disraeli Gears" album, a year later, changed the complexion of guitar playing forever, with Eric Clapton's brilliant solo work. The lead singer is Jack Bruce, the bassist, with Clapton harmonizing and singing intermittent lead lines in a "call and answer" manner. Ginger Baker does amazing drum work on the toms. Incredible, iconic song.

Also, hippies did like rock; hippie and rock are not separate, not at all, but during the hippie era, rock didn't only mean aggressive stuff. I was burnt out on college in 1974 at the age of 20, got my tuition money back after a week (which pissed my dad off because it was his money) and took off zig zagging across the US from Utah, headed East! I stopped at a small country gas station store somewhere in Alabama and bought two 8 tracks, Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd (you can't drive through Alabama without singing Sweet Home Alabama!) and the greatest hits by Cream! Both albums carried me through for the next 550 miles to where I decided to call home for three months, Chapel Hill, NC! How could I leave when there was the best college hangout with beer served to 18 year old's (legal drinking age in 1974) right across the street from the NC University campus! Long live Cream and Lynyrd Skynyrd and those who have left us since 1974! By the way, I went back home to the Bay Area in CA where I worked as a janitor at a elementary school at night for the next 8 months. By then, I was ready to go back to the university where I eventually graduated! I'll never forget those Happy Days, (get it?)!!!!!!!!

Cream are often called the first 'supergroup'. Three amazing talents! They were around in the mid 60s and no one sounded like Cream at that time. They were well ahead of the game and paved the way for artists like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the heavy rock explosion that was to follow in the late 60s and 70s. Jack Bruce, the bassist is the singer on this one, although Clapton harmonises at times. Bruce and Clapton shared vocals, with one or the other taking the lead, depending on the song. Bruce was lead more often though. Bruce was a fantastic bassist and Ginger Baker was one of the best drummers of all-time! Cream were truly groundbreaking and genre setting, as well as being hugely successful. Unfortunately Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker didn't really get on, coming to blows on occasion. Thus they were relatively short-lived, only producing 4 albums. Their influence, however, was enormous! :)

One of THE monster riffs of all time. This one, along with "Smoke on the Water," are the riffs every beginning guitarist wants to learn to play immediately. Cream was one of the first (if not THE first) bands to be called a "supergroup." What's that? It's easy: Get your best all-star guitarist, your best all-star bassist, your best all-star drummer. Match 'em up and you've got what they used to call a supergroup. I think this was the first band to be called that. (Am I forgetting an earlier one?) The "supergroup" never lasted more than an album or two. Just too much ego all around.

Here's the story on how this song came to be: Bass player and main song writer Jack Bruce and Lyricist Pete Brown actively sat down and pulled an all nighter to write a song, ANY song because they just couldn't get it together. So having declared that writing session a failure, Bruce picked up his bass fiddle and from the top of his head started playing that riff. As he was doing so, Brown looked out of the window and remarked "It's getting near dawn." Within a few minutes, that song they were trying their hardest to write had written itself.
So when Brown and Bruce went into the studio and presented to song to Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker, it was Baker who suggested that they'd slow the song down to half its tempo and Baker, who studied African music (And would later work with legendary African musician Fela Kuti) began to play those tribal rhythms which gave this song it's groove.
As for Clapton, he started to quote the old song "Blue moon" in the solo, which had the others laughing but it fit in so perfectly, they ended up keeping it.

Eric Clapton was introducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this time with Cream, Derek and the Dominos, I think or The Yardbird, and as a sole artist. Funny thing is when he was with Cream he heard The Band "Music from the Big Pink", and he quit Cream and flew to New York and went up to Woodstock to meet with The Band. Many years later when he inducted The Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame he confessed he wanted to join The Band, but never had the nerve to ask. Robbie (songwriter and leader of The Band) said in an interview, he was wondering if he was coming to take his job or share his job. He also said he liked Cream, in any case Clapton and Robertson became friends, and you should check out the 2 of them playing together from "The Last Waltz" "Further up the road", especially when Clapton's guitar strap breaks and Robbie steps in, and then they get into guitar dueling, all in good fun. just fantastic.

The name of the band Cream was chosen as the 3 members of the band were all considered "cream of the crop":of British music at that time. Eric Clapton - lead guitar / vocals, Jack Bruce - bass guitar / vocals, and Ginger Baker - drums. Bruce and Baker both had bad drug problems that had drastic effect on their music careers, while Clapton went on to infamy with other groups as well as solo. In 2005, a now wealthy and famous Clapton got them all back together to help Bruce and Baker out of their financial problems and they did a fantastic show at Royal Albert Hall in London.

Partied to this tune so many times. Eric Clapton lead guitar, was in Yardbirds with 2 other master guitarists, Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck. Clapton went solo with hits as "Layla" "Bell Bottom Blues" "Crossroads" as Derek and the Dominoes. Ginger Baker, RIP, was a killer drummer!

Well, that’s not entirely accurate,. Clapton, Page, and Beck were not in the band at the same time. Clapton left after the first album, replaced by Beck. Page entered the lineup to replace Beck when he left.

Layla was released in 1970, was released by Eric Clapton's 5th band, The Yardbirds, John Mayal and the blues breakers, Cream, Blind faith and derrick and the dominoes. In 1970 he wrote Layla, the song was in reference to George Harrison's wife Patti Boyd who he had fallen in love with. Wonderful Tonight released in 1976 on the album slowhand was also a song about his future wife Patti Boyd, as she and Harrison had split up and divorced. If you want you can say Derrick and the Dominoes was his 6th band due to a collaboration with his best friend and Beatles lead Guitarist George Harrison who worked under the name of George Harrison plastic ono band. He would later collaborate with Tulsan J.J. Cale and actually became a resident of Tulsa Oklahoma, this was the an era that he infused country sensibilities with his softer rock style producing great gits like lay down sally, wonderful tonight and cocaine, a song written by J.J. Cale.
Eric absolutely my favorite guitarist, his influences are marvelously
painted to present the genesis and progression of his life and battles. Blues was his foundation but self expression through music as his media is his legacy.

@@NmDPlm31 re:Yardbirds - Clapton, Page and Beck were not in the band at the same time but Beck and Page were. Clapton joined the Yardbirds in October 1963 and left in March 1965 and Jeff Beck came in. Bassist Paul Samwell-Smith quit in June 1966, Jimmy Page joins on Bass. In August 1966, rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja switches over to bass and Beck and Page share rhythm/lead guitar from August 1966 to November 1966. Jeff Beck leaves in November 1966 The line up of Keith Relf (lead vocals, harmonica, rhythm guitar), Chris Dreja (Bass), Jim McCarty (Drums) and Jimmy Page (lead guitar) continued until July 1968. After July 1968, the Yardbirds took a break and Jimmy Page went onto form Led Zeppelin. Cheers.

@@garbider Yes. I stand corrected. I forgot about Page on the bass. Good call.
