You just saved my life (well, my lawn anyway) as when I got my Empress lawnmower out of winter hibernation last week it started and then died after a few seconds. Anyway, I went onto youtube and found your video which gave me the confidence to strip down and clean out the carb over the weekend. Hey presto (well, 6 hours later - I'm not a mechanic!) and the lawn mower not only started up after 2 or 3 pulls but ran perfectly without cutting out! A miracle.. even the missus clapped her hands with delight! I also had the "fast running" issue.. the mower seemed stuck in max power mode, but following your suggestions on how to adjust the governor / throttle etc I soon fixed that as well. I now feel like a lawn mower repair superhero. So thanks again - your advice and videos are great and very much appreciated!
Tecumseh, was one of the first engines I started with many years back. A lot of guys complain about them but I still like working them when I come across a mower with one. Usually on snowblowers today, but I did come across one awhile back in real bad shape. Did a video on that one with my grandson, it is his first engine. Nice to be able to keep these form the scrapyard & help someone that is in need, Stay well, Joe Z
thank you for this excellent video. I have one of these that refused to start this year. Turns out they dont take well to the new E10 fuel. I drained the tank (had to replace the fuel line as it was aged/cracked) and filled it with Super unleaded (!) It still wouldnt start so I set about removing the carb and disassembling it to clean it. It was caked with a white crystaline residue from the "bad" fuel. I used your video as a guide to help me put the carb and throttle linkages back together as in my original haste I forgot to take pictures. The old girl started on the first pull, and I am most pleased.
Great video! I have an old Mountfield Empress 16 with Tecumseh BVS143 and Dellorto carb. Very similar to your machine in video. Took mine apart and followed your advice - it now runs really well. Just need to adjust the governor as shown in your video. Thanks!
I think the reason it's not 100% is you didn't take the emulsion tube out and clean it. Trouble is the o-rings are usually perished like mine! Don't forget the carburettor cup has a deep end to account for the float. Keep up the good work.cheers
Great to see you back again. These mowers are very fiddly like you said not as easy as a briggs. The last one of these I had I virtually gave away as you are thinking of doing. A guy near me has one and he is out there year in year out cutting away so they obviously last quite well at least!
great video , was sent here by retrostore and so glad i was , subbed and cant believe that was an hour and 40min video !! flew by and loved every second
Good to see you back on this channel, in the meantime I've been watching your other channel Stampy's Random Reviews And Tutorials. No problem with the quality from the wide angle lens. Congratulations on your new career. Best wishes Pete.
I have a Tecumseh BV 173. It had been sitting outside for atleast 10 years. The cylinder was full of water! 1 carb clean and some odd repairs later, it runs!! :)
Great video Paul i've got this exact mower bought it 2nd hand about 10 years ago and in the main its always started and run pretty well. that is until yesterday started up did half the garden then it cut out and wouldn't re start. I split the carb cleaned out the jets and now it starts but its stuck on full revs and it doesn't shut off when i close the throttle. I've got a few things to try having watched your video so I'll give them a go and let you know what happens. Thanks again for the info.
Great video thinking of buying one since it has the rollers at back and not a fan or corded for the price they are only 32cm blades. Old lawnmower that was given to me was a harry but the carb is done and cant find and replacement
Good mower. I have a briggs one, i would not touch a tecumseh variant. Very reliable since new in 95. Used in conjunction with a petrol cylinder mower. I do believe that in the vid, the float bowl was put back 180 degrees out. The lowest bottom indent is meant to be opposite the float hinge to allow free up & down movement of float. Have had various other rotary mowers as well as the empress. Hayter, toro and a couple of others. Hayter self propelled goes along too quickly, especially with taller grass. Empress is as good as any of them.
Great video as usual with lots of detail. Much appreciated. I'm working on the same mower myself today but this one has a leak from the fuel tank outlet pipe....and the previous owner has sheared off the oil drain plug on the underside. Also cleaned the carb and replaced the carb bowl seal which was leaking. I'm learning that spares are not readily available so I'm probably going to look into getting the drain plug sealed with a weld if possible or maybe even fibreglass.
Hi i have the same engine which i am about to service following your tutorial, I noticed you didnt replace the air filter. Can you please tell me what did you use. the air filter looks like a sponge

Happy New Year to you, I have a (Tecumseh Edge Trimmer) which I serviced just as you did, so nice to know that I am doing something right from the expert.
You'll prob know the stick out thing is a pawl, the briggs mower I had have plastic ones and twice they wore away when the top cover was loose when a bolt at the front was missing, so when I started it for a season, each start was making it move and wear away as I pulled it. I've saved the engine for a future project but I've learnt from that.
JuiceBanger1 I remember them being called pawls now. I get mixed up and call nuts bolts and allsorts haha! Yeah i've had some worn briggs ones. The sv150 ones are awful as well. Thanks for watching Juicebanger
An old Mountfield with Briggs engine . Paint work is a bit dull , but I know it works because I’ve serviced it in the past. Just a quick clean and service should make me £25 profit. 👍
Great video. I have the similar model with the Dellorto carb (no primer). It’s running again but full speed as yours is in the video. I’ve watched the video a few times but I’m still not clear on the method of fixing the mower to run at the right speed. Could you maybe let me know what’s best to try first?
Great to see you back. Wear gloves all the time. Oil and petrol are cancer causing. Hope you get a job you like, I hated mine until I started gardening. And now I love it (when it doesn't rain). Keep the vids coming if you can manage it.
My dad has this model and hes been asking me to order a replacement ignition coil, but have no idea where to begin looking for this! any tips?! I understand each ignition coil is different, but not sure how to filter and select the correct product! Any chance you have experience with this?
Hi I have one of these lawnmowers and the cord snapped and the whole recoil has packed up. Is there anywhere I can get a new one that would fit this mower because I’d rather repair it than get a new one
I’m watching this because I didn’t take no photos and when cleaning the carb my linkages shot off and wasn’t sure where they went... also the 2 bolts in the casing above the exhaust are for the cage that’s meant to be around it, same as the smaller bolt that you removed from the inlet to the head... thanks for the video helped loads
hi great video, I have similar model. my belt has come off and I'm struggling to put it on. It runs from the rear roller side towards the front via up the side. Can anyone advice on how to get it back on please
I have an older version of this machine which requires a new carb, do you have the part number of the carb shown on this video so I can try and find a replacement??
I've got a mountfield empress but it's not the same as that. I'm having trouble with all the carb springs and stuff, do you have any other videos on these?
Your Neighbour`s "Flat Roof" should have a Fall on it, so it runs into the Gutter .....Puddles are forming because there`s either not enough Fall, or the Roof Boards are Bowing causing Pools of Water .
Just been given an abandoned one, electric start and a regular Briggs meddler but this looks a bitch😂 but got this to reference. Can I just ignore electric start? Just use pull cord
I can't believe what you can't solve...that's what kids in high school solve. Unfortunately, you didn't know how to fix it! Because you don't know! And that's a banal thing. Funny. Well, it can be adjusted with a screwdriver using those two screws on the regulator in 10 seconds !!!! One is for minimum or empty throttle and the other is for maximum throttle. That is all wisdom. So easy and so hard...hahaahaha You didn't do anything...you just disassembled the carburetor without need and without effect. It works the same as before disassembly. Only washed the lawnmower. And it's not servicing at all. It was only necessary to adjust the gas on the regulator with screws and everything would be ok...and it was solved in 10 seconds. The regulator is not adjusted and that's why it works like that. But you don't know that there are those screws on the regulator...you didn't even notice them.
