Mower man that was very much helpful I done exactly what you explained it started straight away
Well done
Thanks Eddie
teddy teddington Nice one! Happy to help!
Thanks very much Paul.
After watching your video I had the confidence to service my Mountfield for the first time - fully stripping the carb as you showed. There was lots of debris and rust in the bottom of the carb, by the drain hole ,which I cleared out. It now runs better than it has done for a very long time. Before the service is was running but stuttering, backfiring now and then and losing power on longer grass.
I was planning to buy a new lawn mower as our local service company wouldn’t service it as it is too old - now it’s likely I will get another 10 years out of it with my new skills! Thanks again, I am very grateful.
Hi, I've replaced a tired SV150 with a like new engine that I tested running, all back together but backfires down the carb like briggs motors used to do when they sheered the key, I've checked the timing over and over and is fine, any ideas?
hi love the videos ,,i have just acquired a free challenge extreme 2012 thats been outside stored ,,the fly wheel seems a bit rusty should i remove and clean it ?
rob fraser Just make sure the magnets are clean. Good luck. Try and get briggs engines to start on as it's a little easier. Nice to see someone having a go though!
@@MowerMan thanks i cleaned it up with wire brush ,,one of the studs came out of the recoil starter i cant see if it should have or not nightmare getting it back in ,, just bought a hayter hawk for £20 think it may have a few problems ,,but its briggs engine ,,might need a bit of advice later ,,picking it tomorrow ,,thanks again ,,,rob
Thank you so video deep in details showing everything precisely and reasonable speed to follow. Can you tell me please what is the purpose of the little screw at the top of the carburettor and how can be adjusted ?
Can you tell me please what is the purpose of the little screw at the top of the carburettor and how can be adjusted ?
Well done good job. I am in the process of giving the carb of my Mountfield S461PD a good clean. I have bought a new bowl seal as the old one expanded when I used the carb cleaner on it. Lesson to be learned. Wish me luck! I found the slow running jet blocked so fingers crossed.
Hi there, Great video. It helped me out a lot. I was just wondering, after you cleaned the carburettor, and refitted it. Was there no gaskets to put onto the carburettor ? Thanks
Great vid mate again, I'm after the governor flap/paddle & spring for my Champion R484 SV150, can you advise?
Fantastic tutorial and proved invaluable for me.
I did unfortunately have the linkage detach from the arm with the long slit, and boy did I struggle trying to get it back. I had to undo the nut and bolt on the mechanism to get the arm to tilt enough.
I found a washer, does this washer sit below the two arms?
Sit in between the arms?
Or sit on top of the arms?
I couldn’t figure out where it originally came from.
Thank you for your time 👍🏻
Very thorough and technical made easy
Only one comment no gasket between cab and filter cover !
Thx Brgds
Hello Paul
Lawnmower SP150. Took the sump of the carburettor. Where can I get the large rubber washer that that is inside ,the groove of the main body of the carburettor? Who is the motor manufacturer of the Champion lawnmower?
Thank you.
Ps. Great tutorial of how to clean the carburettor.
Hello Paul.
I have a Champion150 lawn mower. I took the sump off on the carburettor. Where can I get a gasket for it as I don’t think I noticed one in the groove?
Thank you.
Regards.
Hi Paul. I am servicing one of these engines at the moment. I checked your video to see if there should be and gaskets on either side of the carb. I have the rubber ring which is fine but mine has a torn gasket on the engine side of the carb but it doesn't look right as it appears to cover some of the holes. Should there be any gaskets either engine side of the card or at the joint to the air filter? Thanks again your video's have given me a new hobby in retirement. Really enjoying servicing mowers and making a little bit of pocket money.
Gasket should only be at the air filter side. Only an o ring on the engine side. Go on Ebay and search for Sv150 carb gasket and you'll see a replacement kit for a about £6.
I've got a petrol Leak on mine, coming from. a small spring/screw underneath the carb. doesn't seem to stop or go back in.
Wrap motor or any inlet or outlet holes in plastic bag or can use old rubber gloves if you want it’s easier to jet wash the deck..
Just serviced my mower, using this video as a guide. Perfect instruction and the mower now runs perfectly. Thank you.
Have you forgotten to replace carburettor gasket on the air filter side?
HHi mate nice video .. did help me out .. but in my Stiga with a SV 150 carburetor, there's a carburetor gasket between the engine and carburetor. I didn't see that in yours. Is it not essenbtial to change those gaskets upon cleaning ?
What size is the gasket for the bowl and where do you buy them from
Just clicked on the link to the website, no joy??
Thankyou. Great video! 👍.
Il have go hope don't loose enybits thanku
Thank you very much for your help 🙏👍👍
What adoute the gaskets are theý needed on thecarb
they are also called a chinese honda so i have been told
Thank you very much, Paul. After watching your very good video, just took the carburettor of my SP150 mower, cleaned it and now it runs beautifully. Last time I cleaned a carburettor was on my Triumph Herald in 1970. 👍
awesome
Hi. My mower runs for a few minutes then stops also after around twenty minutes petrol leaks from the back of the carburettor . This is when it's all bolted back in place. Never had this problem before. The mower has SV150 engine Will appreciate any advice. Thanks Kim
Sounds like the needles sticking. Make sure you can hear it moving when you put it back together
I bought a second hand Mountfield RV40 150. It was chugging a bit then started leaking at the air filter. I removed the plastic casing & noticed the rubber seal had slipped off so suspect that's the source of the leak. I cleaned as much as I could without taking it all apart but its still not firing. Going to clean up or replace the spark plug but not sure what to do if that doesn't work?
Hi Sian. When you say leaking, was it leaking oil or fuel from the air filter?. Your carburetor probably needs a good clean. Always avoid tipping the lawn mower on its side as oil and fuel can enter the carb. Have you tried starting the mower with the air filter removed?.
Thanks and passing on to family and friends red your site.👌
Awesome thank you!
Thank you, this video saved my old mower from the scrapheap! I am in Italy, the mower is labelled Castlegarden Club Garden but I managed to identify the motor as SV150. Without your help I would never have been able to take the carburetor out, clean it and put it back. I learnedalotin the process.
Excellentay
Top, top video. Can’t wait to tackle my Mountfield SV150. You make it look easy but you can bet your ass I’ll make a boo-boo somewhere along the line.
Hi there. Thanks for your video. I repaired a Sovereign xsz40 with a SV150 engine. This has a priming bulb fitted which connects to the carb via a small rubber hose. My question is, where can you buy this type of carb from?. This carb does not have a black throttle linkage like the ones on Ebay. I recently repaired a Challenge Xtreme mower with a SV150 engine but this carb had the throttle linkage on. There was no priming bulb either. I hope you can help. Cheers.
Brilliant detail fella...you are really good at explaining what to do :)
HumDrummStudio Thanks ! I do my best!
Thank you I followed you video because my carb was leaking petrol . So after cleaning out the carb and putting it back on the mower all worked well . I'm surprised they have no fuel filter linked in .. Cheers Gerry
Thanks for another excellent video. I’ve got one of these rv150 engines on a Mountfield SP454 and it surges from time to time and seems a little down on power. I’ve done the carb clean, new spark plug, fresh fuel and air filter clean. I think I need I examine the governer flap and check the linkages are moving freely from watching this video. Will do it and report back. Thanks again
Wobbly wobbly Thanks. Check the head gasket and the throttle cable also
Mower Man thanks again. Do you have any videos on those two items by any chance? Even if they’re not from the sv/rv 150?
Wow amazing video!! Thanks, much appreciated
I have a RM45 same carb differnt linkage change the plug filter & cleaned the carb & still runs rich black plug any ideas please?
furthe comment 10 mm wont fit on some mowers I have to use a 3/8 socket on mine SV150 all the bolts are the same 3/8 please let your viewers know
Just been given a sp lawnmower as my own is simply push. Garden in 1000 square meters & my back is going.
Carb does need sorting on it, I’m pretty handy & this video is just what I needed. Also explains my carb issue on my original. Thanks for putting these up, it’s a godsend
Had a lot of fun following the instructions on this. It sounded a bit healthier but still won't start. Will try changing the spark plug before giving it up 🙏 Thanks for a great video!
my sv150 does not have a govner flap it never had one
Not all Sv150 engines have them. There are 2 types of carbs that are fitted to this engine. The mower in this video has a priming bulb fitted and no throttle cable. The mower runs at a set speed. The throttle version of this engine does not have a priming bulb fitted but relies on a choke and idle to start the engine. Do you have a Mountfield XSZ40?.
Thank you. Really helpful video-ing the fiddly spring linkages. As good as a workshop manual-or better!
Hi mower man just came across this video I have the same carbureta on my mower it was hunting so I cleaned it out twice it's now lovely and clean inside and all jets but it's still hunting I have found the little spring on throttle arm is not there are there any fixes for this please any help would be much appreciated thanks and keep up good work.
Hi Paul,
Great video as usual. I've got an sv150 engine mower in at the moment and it's the type with the fuel tank built into the recoil cover and guess what: its leaking fuel.
Do you know if the replacement tank can be bought or do I need to go for a fuel tank conversion kit? The latter is pricey!
Thanks for your video, I managed to fix my hp454 rm45 mower adapting it to suit the mower. It was a carbaretor blockage problem. I couldn't unscrew the inner tube to get it out but sprayed it with cleaner and air and it sorted the problem, all done for £15 🙏. Carb cleaner and compressed air canisters.
Paul. The b and q lawnmower is still brand new Condition a just bought but just wont start added oil also. Fuel was already in they. Thanks
Thanks, really useful tips 👍👍
Thanks, mate, I think your demeanour is great. You a Yorkshireman? I did a carb service, but couldn't get the jets out. I'll try again and get back to you
I clean mine with a pressure washer
You dont mention o ring and gaskets
very good i will try to service my lawn mower
that's the noise my one is making
PLEASE HELP. I have a mountfield mower with an SV100 engine, inherited it but the throttle cable isn't attached. It has two levers on the carb that open two flaps but cant see how the throttle cable attaches. Both flaps are wide open and engine revs it nuts off when started. Any clue how the throttle cable attaches and how you link the two lever arms?????
Not all SV150 engines have a throttle on. If your mountfield is an xsz40, it does not need a throttle as the engine runs at a set speed. Does your mower look like the one in the video?. If yes it doesn't need a throttle. Just insure that the springs on the carb are fine and not stretched. Does your mower have a priming bulb?.
Hi mate not seen much of you hope all’s ok
Absolutely brilliant! £20 mower for allotment, cleaned serviced as in video. Started first time. Thank you
Great Job!!
I hope everything is ok Mower Man. Please come back as we love your videos.
Thanks mate, fixed my similar carburetor with your help x
Awesome !
Really helpful video. Cleaned the carb on mine and forgot to take a picture of all the linkages. Was stuck until I found this and now it's running again. Thanks.
The sovereign is the 13th week 2014
Hiya mate
Iv got one of these champions.
I got a new carb for it because after i servest the old one i broke the screw in side the jet by cross threading.
It was hunting and back fireing with the old one on and still hunting and back firing with the new one. Iv changed the oil, plug, petrol and have made sure all the spring's are working fine. Any ideas what else could be wrong with it?
karlosvandango 1989 Make sure the exhausts clear and check the key ways
Bought a mountfield rv150 full service history for 40 quid. Have I been ripped off? This is for me to keep not to selll!
Andrew Devine £40 is very reasonable if it runs ok
Your video on sv150 carb helped me to get my lawnmower running again, however having not used it in over 8 months and moved house it was smoking badly on start up. I noticed a lot of oil had blow out over front of mower, so cleaned and let it run for a while but then saw black oil dripping out from under the exhaust. Is there anything i should look for or do to correct this. TIA
leave it running with correct amount in
Brilliant tutorial and gave me the confidence to tackle my Champion V40. Didn’t have carb cleaner but did have brake cleaner and that seemed to do the job OK. Checked the jet with a watchmaker’s eyeglass and holding up to the light.
The O ring around the bowl was quite crusty and next time I’d try and buy one in advance. However, cleaned the seal up gently with warm soapy water.
In the video there was a black wire getting in the way, mine wasn’t a problem as the associated green/yellow wire was hooked around it. Crude but sort of works.
After removing the air filter I wound it a help to slip the two bolts back in to hold the carb in place while I wrestled with the fuel pipe and avoided any strain on the springs.
In addition to the only tool being a 10mm socket, a suitably sized screwdriver for the jet is important too. Too narrow and the brass will be damaged, too wide and it will bind on the thread in the body, it was also a lot tighter than I expected so some force needed.
Taking photos before and during is a great idea too.
My mower started with first pull and ran as good as new.
In all, full of very practical advice, good quality video and no music track! Many thanks.
Thanks PB much appreciated. Good to hear you got sorted
Thanks to you and your video I've just stripped my champion 40 mower carburetor down cleaned it put it back together again and the mower started for the first time in 5 years 👌👍👍👍👍
Thats fantasic TJB nice one!
Excellent video. I have a Mountfield with same looking engine. It only starts 1 out of 20 times and dies out after a few seconds. Would this be a carburetor issue? Thanks.
Fabian McElhill yes. make sure the choke is working also
I don't have a steam cleaner but I do have a cold water Karcher which is really useful for blowing the crap off. After a good clean I give em a spray with some duck oil, this leaves waterproofed and a bit shiny, it works for me. Great channel thanks and good luck.
Great tip!
Thank You. I just fitted one of these motors onto an old outboard leg. This has got it running a whizz.
Excellent video. Is it possible to get replacement hair springs to replace the ones that brake.
I haven't found any unfortunately
Hi Paul,
I was given a self drive version of the same Champion mower because of carb issues. The owner found it very difficult to start and when it did it would only run for about 30 seconds then cut out. I did the carb service in a very similar way to you + soaked the parts in carb cleaner overnight. I found poking out the side holes in the main jet with unwound electrical wire worked well. The copper is soft so does not damage the holes. An electrical flat blade screwdriver works best for getting the jet out as they are the same width all the way down. After putting it back together with a new plug it worked fine for a couple of weeks but blocked again. The first signs seem to be that it will only run with the choke on. Went through the same procedure again and again after a couple of cuts it started blocking again. This time I flushed the tank, added a new fuel line and fitted an in-line petrol filter to it. It was only a couple of pounds from a moped spares shop on eBay. It has now worked perfectly for over a year without any signs of blocking.
I would also add that you need to be very careful about overtightening or reusing the spark plugs on this mower. I stripped the thread on the head and had to replace it. The metal on the head thread is softer than the plug and it is very easy to do if you are re-using the spark plug. I now always use new plugs as you can feel the compression washer getting squashed as you tighten it.
For your reference my mower has an extra top cover compared to yours. I will try to add a picture.
I would be interested in any thoughts you have regarding storing a petrol mower for winter? E.g. in a shed? Should you empty the petrol? Should you run it every three or four weeks?
Many thanks for the videos and hard work you are putting into your channel
gxc2000 Hi thanks for your comments. Interesting stuff! I have not encountered having problems with the spark plug but I will look out for it. I will write an article on storing a lawnmower for winter too. Thanks for watching and your kind comments. Much appreciated
Hi, I own a Sandri 3.5 lawn mower that has the same engine as the one in the video. I performed the cleaning as you described, but the engine accelerates and decelerates continuously, doing the typical swing. I can't solve it and they told me that the problem could be the butterfly clip placed behind the carburettor. Do you have any advice for me?
if it revs up and down the carb needs cleaning
Thanks. Exactly the same parts and setup as the 484SP..
Joe O Sullivan Cheers Joe!
Hi Mower Man i have one of these that hunts and i dont know why. Ive fitted a new carb, head gasket and cleaned the fuel filter but still the governor flap moves back and forth revving the engine up and down. If i stick my finger on the governor flap to restrict it the engine ticks over nicely but release it and off it goes again. Any ideas?
Did you sort this as I've done exactly the same thing and still hunts/surges 🤔
where does the gasket go and there's a large o ring and i'm not sure where it goes thanks
The large o ring goes between the engine and the carb. The gasket goes between the carb and airfilter housing. Basically the gasket is closest to you when looking at the air filter.
I just followed your tutorial and mounting it back I ran into a fuel leak from the hole on the side where the carburetor mounts on to the motor. There is a tiny hole in the groove around the hole where the air/fuel mix enters the engine. Fuel leaks out and follows the groove which has an opening down by the cup. What could be wrong? I have checked and double checked everything and I can't find anything wrong. That hole is connected to the hole underneath the cup on the side from where the brass rod goes in.
Photo shooter It sounds like the needle is sticking inside the carb
Mower Man how I don't understand. I checked that it was moving freely and in its right spot.
It finally stopped leaking when the tank fuel level got down a bit. Went fine until I refilled the tank. Then started leaking again until it was down a bit again. Weird.
Hi Paul cracking video. Quick question does this carb have gasket. Like the briggs and Stratton
Ger wkm it has a rubber washer to seat the bowl onto the carb but no diaphragm and gasket
@@MowerMan OK thanks Paul
Loving these tutorials. I just bought a second hand qualcast petrol mover. Unfortunately it has the sv150 engine. Il have it running sweet with your tutorials. Thanks buddy
andre heron Thanks!
@@MowerMan I had a quick look at my mower yesterday. It looks as the throttle cable on the carb. Is sticking. It's not moving freely. And when I try and start the mower I have to have the throttle on low. If I try and use the choke it floods instantly. It cuts out on high throttle aswell.
hi my sv 150 is hunting i have cleaned the carb ..still hunting ,,i swapped the carb for one that is not hunting ,,its still hunting ,,any clue what else it could be ?
I have a similar problem, please do let us know if you find the cause. It seems like the governor springs aren't strong enough to keep the throttle steady; if I hold the throttle arm solidly in place the engine ticks over smoothly.
@@justinfielding hi still cant find the problem i have swapped the carb,, new plug,, drained the tank ,,swapped the hole throttle linkage and springs ,,from a similar mower )(that doesnt hunt ) ,,its getting to the point that i think i sell it as spares or repair ,,nightmare
@@justinfielding hi after days of grief i have fixed it ( i think ) i found that there is a little filter in the fuel pipe just at the tank that was slowing the flow to the carb just cut the grass and all was good
@@rabfraser1234 Good to hear. I checked my filter and it was fine, just gave the main jet a clean with an old guitar string and running nicely now.
Hi. Can u reconmend a good small engine repair book.thanks john..
John Mcguane Haynes do some good ones!
Thanks so much for this, I fixed my mower easily after watching this. 👍
Excellent Duncan
