    Recently purchased this very lawnmower. Took me almost a week to get it started after put it together. Checked everything that Mower Man advised to check but all seemed to be as it should. After scratching my head with a mate and the pair of us looked at it, we found that when pulling on the OPC lever there was no separation of the engine break. After we bent it slightly we were off and seems to be have been working well every since. So just thought I share this in case anyone experiences this same problem, not sure if was just a one-off or not. Usually you're advised to take it to the nearest service centre but as I leave in the NW Highlands, the nearest centre is an 80 mile journey there and back.

    Great video thank you. My Mountfield St120 wouldn't start for love nor money after winter storage and I did the usual.......drained and cleaned the fuel tank.....took the bowl off the carb and cleaned it......liberally dosed the carb in cleaner.....put a brand new spark plug in. It still wouldn't fire up. After watching your video I checked the gap on the spark break and yes the cable from the dead mans handle had obviously stretched slightly because there was no gap. I enlarged the gap by gently bending the break using a large screwdriver and the mower fired up on the first pull. Many thanks again because I was about to leave the machine out for the scrap man and go and buy a new mower.
    Re: the fuel filter in my opinion these slim insert type filters are a waste of time. Always clogging up. It's easier just to remove it completely from the fuel pipe and occasionally flush any crud out of the bottom of the carb by undoing the drain nut.

    Many thanks for this informative video. I now know where the fuel filter is. Obscure little stick thing. I've had the hand push version of this mower for a year now (Mountfield HP164) and am pleased with it. Not a bad little engine at all. I always went for mowers with USA made Briggs and Stratton engines previously but a lot are now made in China. The aluminium block Stiga engine is probably Chinese but looks well made enough. I prefer the aluminium bowl carb to the usual plastic Briggs and Stratton carb. I've bought a conventional fuel filter and am hoping there is enough fuel hose to be able to fit it.

    Hi, I've just had one of these mowers. I filled it with the specified amount of engine oil (0.45L) which ended up being too much, the oil was far too high on the dip-stick. I called customer services who advised to fill the mower to the level indicated on the dip-stick. Its also important not to tip the mower on its side as oil can go through to the air filter housing. Hope this helps even if it sounds basic to some. 👍

    Thanks for all the information. I have a similar mountfield petrol mower now in its fourth year and it won't fire up. I wonder if it could be because of the change to premium fuel. I watched all your video but you did not show replacement of the spark plug cover. Does it just pull off and push on? I also don't have tools and would not know what to buy. Some of the tips you have shown I could attempt to check before resorting to getting the lawnmower repaired. Thanks

    Thanks, pal. I have the hand propelled version of this mower, which has carb issues. Now I know what to do. One question. With the airbox in place there is one plastic screw accessible from the front. Have fiddled with that and it didn't seem to change anything. Is that an idle jet or something?

  • @donleech5219

    Superb video, very informative and everything explained in an easy to understand manner. Could you clarify one point for me? When checking the oil level I believe you screwed the dip stick back into its holder. In my documentation it suggests that when you dip the oil to check the level you DO NOT screw it fully into the holder. I wonder if this is why your mower only took 200 ml of oil.
    Any comments would be welcomed.

      I would follow the manual. Maybe I got this wrong

    • @wernercook1005
      @wernercook1005 2 роки тому

      I concur, the documentation does instruct you to measure the oil level on the dip-stick by not screwing it back on, just rest it on the top of the thread. I just bought this mower yesterday and the instructions say it should be filled with 0.5 litres of oil. This I did but when I dipped to check the oil level by fully screwing the dip-stick in, it was way above the max mark on the dip-stick. Double checked the manual it says not to screw it fully back. Dipped again without screwing it home (just resting it on the top of the threads) and low and behold the oil level was dead on the max level mark.
      Brilliant instructional video presented in a friendly and affable way. Very impressed that you serviced RAF Tucano aircraft in a past life.
