As someone who owns about 50 backpacks (😅) let me tell you design #1 TAKE MY MONEY!! How exciting it’s like we’re living our dreams through you! I think what’s important to many is the right volume, right amount of space and location of quick access pockets, handles, comfort and last but not least, style. Did I mention you could take my money on design#1? :) love your channel!!!
Thanks so much Richie!! This journey has been a freaking blast so far, and we’re just getting started. Love your pointers and agree on all of them (especially style - it’s gotta look the part!). We didn’t end up going with #1 but I think the one we did choose will be so much better. Are you on our email list?
One feedback is most bags are all black. Recycled firefighter had a distinct look with fire hose but no longer available. Boundary supply has excellent brown-black combo which is not common. Mystery ranch has the mystery pop. Black, grey and multi cam are liked by most but would love to see some unique color combinations used which are distinct to this brand.
Great points dude and we are probably going to look at a light gray for our first prototype. We surveyed our community and 62% say they want black though, so it’s hard to make something different when black is such a dominant preference lol
Love the name and the drawings look very exciting. I can't wait to see the actual designs and the features that the bag will have! Keep up the great work.

great feedback! I'm digging the response from everyone in regards to the name so far. Love that you think that it's memorable with a sense of purpose 💪🏼
@@UKOG we will do our best! Shipping is a biotch right now with supply chain issues, but our goal is to have an international brand, so we'll do everything we can to make sure everyone can access our products at a fair price
It’s an awesome logo, it feels modular and elastic, very well done, I get the feeling that this little triangle and the shape above it is an actual backpack that expands or contracts based on the stuff in it, so many ideas. I can actually see it animate in such manner in my mind lol.
Great video. Looking forward to future updates. One question I've always had and was wondering if you already had more insight on this is how are liters measured for backpacks? More specifically, if a backpack is, let's say 35l, does it include every single pocket or are there guidelines such as only closeable pockets are taken into account? Totally understand if you do not know yet.
Thanks Chase! And dude that’s a great question that I should know the answer to. I THINK it would include everything, but am not 100% sure. I’ll be sure to ask my designer Jon and make note when I announce the final size
Appreciate that Nathan! It’ll be on the trigger for a while as this is going to be a looonnnngg process, but the journey has been a blast so far. Thanks for the support my man
Everything seems on the right way!! Name and logo are nice and the design of the futur backpack is so cool (looks like a two in one backpack and a sling!)
Thanks for the love! And you aren't far off with your guess! I don't want to ruin the surprise, be sure to keep an eye on your inbox when we reveal the designs so you can see what we are cooking up ;)
Also loving the concept of the detachable sling. Option 1 gets my vote at this stage! Look at those gorgeous water bottle pockets (please add a pleat in the bottom!)
First of, congrats on the process so far. It’s exciting seeing you building your company for the ground up. Also, the I love the name. It’s simple, it’s direct, and easily connects with the brand mission. I like the playful spelling as well it’s makes it fun and trendy. I love that you added the nation after Ventr because it ties back to Nomad Nation. Great way to expense your business and still have it connect with your UA-cam channel. I think it was a smart and strategic move on your part. The logo is awesome. Again, it’s simple, edgy, and new at the same time. It will surely stand out as the brand grows and I can see the logo on all your products that may even expand beyond backpacks one day. I can see the future expanding to gear for the bold adventurer who’s looking to create a lifetime of memories.
Really appreciate that positive feedback John! Opinions about the name are divided so far - but I expected this. No brand name is perfect and not everyone will like what I pick (same with the bag!). People get used to names though - even Phil Knight said he hated the word Nike when it was first proposed 😂
Thanks so much Guilherme! We won’t be launching with a photography sling, but if this first product is successful then we can hopefully later down the line ❤️
Love it all. Love the mission statement and the logo. Can’t wait to see the bags and hope they won’t be all 25-35Liters like every other back pack company. I’m still rocking a 25l and roller carry on because the 35-45l space is pretty much non existent or makes me look like im going hiking.
The logo is cool. Please don't use some kind of muted neon green. Maybe some earthy or sky tone based color that the graphics fellow can make custom. I like the name, but since I think most will just say "ventr", I think the text in the logo should have that with a smaller font "nation" aligned underneath it. If most will simply say "ventr", "nation" will just be dangling out there. Another idea is the company is "ventr" and the model names of bags are "nation", "city" and "neighborhood" from large to small.
Agreed on the ‘nation’ part being more of a “dangler”. Ventr is the most important part. Also interesting ideas with the product names - very creative!!
Aaron I hope your remember I have been following you since a very long time. I would have loved to sign up for your focus group but the forms are closed to apply. I am super excited on this journey you have embarked on. Would love to be part of it for any feedbacks or testing required. Let me know if I can still join in.
Of course dude! You’ve been an OG in this community. The focus group is still very open so you should be able to apply. Email me aaron@nomadsnation.com if you are having issues
@@ChinmayH Nice dude! I'm going to start looking at apps over the next few weeks, I'll keep you posted as things develop and feel free to hit me up via email anytime.
Hi Aaron, thanks for documenting this, which service did you use to trademark your name? And how does it work between the US and Europe? How can I make sure that the trademark I pay for is covering me on both continents? Thanks a lot
I can't not think "venter". And "venter nation" just leads down a weird path imo. I do love venture as a word/concept for the brand though (and hope no issues with Bellroy's line). "Collective" also came to mind as an alternative to nation and seems appropriate given the way you're involving us in the process (an extra syllable, but lends to people using just "venture" instead of saying the whole thing?).
Love this feedback! Collective has a really cool ring to it as well and sounds less cultural lol (although it’s 3 syllables as opposed to nation with is 2 a but could shorten it to ‘co’).
So far it seems that everything is going along as plan with its design, name & logo etc. The final test would be putting it to a field test either in travelling, urban everyday use or the occassional bush bash which will really test its durability. If it looks great & sexy, it needs to withstand anything the element throws at it. I'm sure it will mate. Cowabunga AR.!
Hey matey thanks so much for the kind words! Yes, the logo and branding is fun but the REAL test is the backpack itself. It’s gonna be a hell of a ride - COWABUNGA!
Personally I am not too keen with vowels being dropped from names, but others have gone that route as well. Most useful descriptive names have the domain already registered even when not used. The slings show two have a vertical aspect - tall and narrow. But look as if the opening would be down one side. I found that the contents in the pockets would come out when I opened the long zip. I prefer the portrait carry if it is symmetrical so it swaps easily from one shoulder to the other and if moving the bottom end of the strap from right to left side that is okay. So double zip opening along both sides so access to pockets and contents opens from the top. Slings that can be carried on the waist have some advantage for photographic gear but I never use mine that way. I like the back pack to be three way carry brief case, over a shoulder as well as on the back and larger 30+ litres to be able to carry as a suit case, duffle (over the shoulder) and back pack. On a holiday it becomes two bag travel (gear you can have or must have on you and stuff that is only permitted as cargo) so one is the back pack (heavier one) and the other the shoulder bag/duffle.
yes it seems that dropping vowels is more controversial than I thought 😂 As for the sling/pack comments - yes these are things that we are going to have to test out to get right. What's a pack that you like that does the three way best?
@@Nomads.Nation for a sling I wanted to be able to carry camera with lenses, 8" tablet and every day stuff (mobile phone, wallet, keys). I used the Alpaka Go Sling Pro for a while and might go back to it. It does work for waist carry and cross body but not shoulder carry. The strap is thick and heavy and when not cross body is really in the way. I might use a different strap over the one shoulder or cross body. Currently I am using the X-pac version of the Instinct Go Camera Pro. The compartments are really not very useful for other than storing camera gear but it is lighter and larger at 7 litres so stuff does fit and I can carry externally water bottle and tripod so really packs out. By the time I get to 5kg I go to a backpack and use the XD Design Bobby Bizz. I modified it with Velcro's and camera dividers. It is brief case, shoulder bag and backpack. I used it as every day carry a month in India and to hold all the gadgets with me on the plane with the clothes and stuff not allowed as hand luggage in cargo. People said it was too business like and I was warned by some about pick pockets - but of course it has no zips from the outside, not easily cut through and a metal band on the side protecting camera gear from being banged into. My camera is a Sony E-mount and like Micro 4/3rd is under 9cm tall. Most camera bags and camera cube inserts are much larger, 12cm, and too big to fit into small every backpack so I made my own. Without the dividers it carries my ultra portable 12" and/or the 8" Windows tablet with keyboard and pockets for mouse, charges etc. Cross a shoulder strap and it works cross body with a swing to your front for access. For travel bag I used a Tortuga Set Out Divide. In hindsight I would have preferred the 35 litre for the deeper base, the set out splits volume 50:50 bottom and top. Again three way carry and I did use it as a duffle with shoulder strap on trains. Tortuga have reduced their range dropping the ones I liked the best. Going with a different backpack perhaps the Instinct or the Digital Nomad both 35 litres. I have not liked any organisation in the backpacks. On your back and upright maybe they are okay. Swing between on my back, over my shoulder and as suit case / duffle the contents never stayed in place. I use packing cubes and tech organisers but did use the small pocket on the Setout Divide and on the Bobby Bizz for passport and wallet secure and hidden by readily accessible. For cargo I wrapped an inexpensive foldable duffle around the backpack. It provided me 40 Litres needed with the gifts I brought with me. My thoughts on the different designs of slings is at www.mcmullon.com/icollect/bags/slings.htm with links to the ones I tried out for the task stated.
Ventr is a solid name, Nation not so much. I understand the link to the UA-cam Channel, but it just doesn’t seem to roll off the tongue well. Also think the Logo could use some work. I would suggest somehow making the “broken triangle” better represent the V in Ventr to ensure there is immediate brand recognition. There seems to be some missed synergy between “Ventr” and that triangle. Just my opinion of course, great work overall brother.
Appreciate that David! I totally agree with the 'nation' part, but I don't know if it's necessary for a logo to reflect a lettering in the actual word. It's designed to be a symbol for moving forward, which I think it accomplishes quite well :) But I'll def take another look at it and keep you posted 💪🏼
Cool update, I'm definitely enjoying watching this all unfold. As far as feedback, I really like the logo and some of the concept art you shared. Though I don't love the brand name. I just don't immediately get venture out of it. But I'm also not a fan of any of the companies that drop letters in order to create their brand names so I think it's just a question of personal taste.
thanks for the feedback! Stoked that you like the logo (it's my favorite part) and yea dropping vowels isn't anyone's first choice - we are forced to do it! There's a lack of domain names available, so new entrepreneurs have to get creative and drop vowels to make things work. Having said that, ventr nation isn't 100% so I miggghhtt go back to the drawing board to see if there are any better options out there :)
I actually thought the smaller triangle on the bottom was a V for Ventr! I'm pretty hype about this for you and to see what you'll come up with. And the features and all that. Can't wait for the email 💪🏻
Thanks so much alysha! Email/video will hopefully be out 2 weeks. Gotta get the building a backpack videos live while also pumping out content for UA-cam 💪🏾

I love the logo, especially monochrome like that. I dig Ventr. Though, usually, when I see missing vowels in brand names, they opt to skip all the vowels, and the lack of consistency is poking at my OCD. But overall, I think Ventr captures the brand's essence, it's short and sexy. Not as sold on Nation. I get why it was necessary, and I do like that it ties in with the YT channel, but together, Ventr Nation is a bit of a mouthful. I toyed around with combining the two for a few minutes, but wasn't feeling the result. Sorry if all the feedback is confusing or overwhelming, dude. Regardless, I think you're off to a sick start. Can't wait to see more of the design itself!
Totally agree with what you are saying. I was really aiming for a powerful two-to-three-syllable word but holy hell was it a challenge. The name isn't 100% confirmed as we are still open to other ideas and looking into other possibilies. But for now,, ventr nation it is!
I'm excited for the transparency about the process and am excited for the final result. However, I must say the font on the logo is not something, IN MY OPINION, not anyone else's opinion, is not something I would want on my bag. The bags that have always stood out for me on your channel are the bags the stand out due to function and design not just a brand they sew into the outside pocket. I wish you nothing but luck and am excited to pick this up when it drops
Thanks for the feedback! Agreed that great branding is all about subtlety, and we are going to be very chic and non-obtrusive with the use of our logo. Thanks again for the support ❤️
Thank you very much for sharing this adventure and process, the logo is very design and really beautiful and the name already transports us to new adventures. do you already know if you will deliver in france? Congratulations to you and your team, maybe there will be a woman next time 😉
Thanks for the love!! We will be running a Kickstarter when we launch which will be worldwide 🇫🇷 . And as for a woman, our videographer and editing extraordinaire Margaret is the brains behind this whole operation - she’s just a bit camera shy 😉
I love following this journey. As for the logo, my initial response ....it doesn't do much for me. I find it a bit blocky looking, and I read that some see it as an "F"....I can't unsee that now! I'd prefer something more subtle....wondering how the existing shape would look if it was just an outline.....not filled in? I think the logo has potential, as I see the bottom part as the "V" for Ventr, and the top part as a type of backpack.....was that the intent? I watch a few UA-cam channels and when I'm stuck for inspiration, it think to myself..."what would xxxx say?" So I'm now imagining Chase Reeves doing a review of the awesome, new Ventr Nation EDC.....now that I've replayed that in my head, the phrase "Ventr Nation" doesn't easily roll off the tongue. Ventr (Vencha....Vencher?) on it's own sounds OK, though I think some people won't know how to pronounce it when just reading it. Looking forward to the next chapter ....cheers
Great feedback! I think that the logo as an F is an interesting observation made by a few other ppl as well. Also agreed that it’s a mouthful, but it’s 4 syllables, same as boundary supply, able carry, even huge brands like Lululemon. I’m loving all the feedback though and my team and I will consider if a new name is better. Cheers!
Ventr for sure! Definitely don’t think you need the nation bit, I know it makes sense as it seems a like an extension of nomad nation (even though this isn’t a brand extension, it’s a new brand), and feels like a community, but also nation gives travel imagery. But it reminds me far too much of UA-camrs and their toxic fan based and that toxic new gen Z “community, were a family that works together” feeling. (I wrote this before your explanation). It’s unfortunate that you had to add another word too it. It feels like a service company or travel community rather than a product. Ventr Beyond would’ve been cool, but also sounds like a travel agency or travel magazine. Ventr is definitely a great name for a brand, and for a backpack or luggage company.
Okay. Had a little more of a think. Someone said the logo looks like an F. True. In that case you could call it, Ventur Far. I also don’t think the typeface works with the blocky logo (to be honest don’t think the logo works with the same either, looks either corporate or like a gaming company, but you like it and that’s what matters!) So I thought, what do I think of when I think of Venture? Business venture? Adventure? Hm… I want that adventure feeling. When I fill my bag and step out into the world, I want to feel prepared for a fun day ahead, I want that feeling that you get zipping up a suitcase and boarding a plane shortly after. where am I going with the bag? To the shops, to school, to work… little adventures, (Ventr near), on holiday, bigger adventures! (ventr far). I also thought Ventr To, like… where are you venturing to? A question to ask customers. I think (not really an issue) is that is being thought of a community rather than a product. Which is what it is. It could be a community driven product, but it’s still a product first and not a service. A mission can’t always be connecting people, in my opinion. I just don’t see how a backpacks mission is to connect a community. Yes brands connect people on some level because their are fans of the brand but there’s normally a lot of history and back story. And when you do see mission led products, they’re born out of the mission it’s self. Peak Design name doesn’t really have much to do with their mission - but they were born out of a community that needed to solve a problem, carrying camera gear. What is the problem you’re solving via and with this community? If you’re not sticking with the name maybe throw a few more out their and do a little more market research. Develop out your vision statement, mission statement and personas and go from there. Really like Packed (or Packd) or Get Packed.
Really great suggestions and feedback here - thanks a ton! I’m going to take a look over your notes a bit and brainstorm, I’ll let you know if I have any questions :)
And those are the exact reasons I’ve decided to change it 😂. I chose the word ventr as in taking risks (new business, side hustle, travel, etc) but I failed to realize that everyone would associate it with ADventure (which makes total sense) which doesn’t work for us cuz we’re gonna be an urban brand. So we are in the process of finding something else!
We will start with a Kickstarter campaign which will probably be accessible worldwide. Depending on the success of the campaign we will decide where we can afford to ship to 👊🏾
Without hearing it, all I see is "venter" not "venture" I don't have an issue with these kinda names missing letters and such too much, but you gotta be careful about how they'll be pronounced in a vacuum. Ex: Wandrd works for the same reason Flickr does, and they set precedent for why Ventr would be Venter and not Venture.
Put another way, you have to consider the implicit rules used when omitting letters and how people will pronounce it without any context of how you WANT it pronounced. Vntur would work better for example. You'd get people saying "Vinture" or hopefully "Venture"
Notice mudwtr is similar here. Wtr -> wter which is close enough to water to understand, since a w on its own gives you a sort of "wuh" sound. Wuhter. Water. Etc etc
Really great points! I’ll be honest I’m re-thinking the name a lot now. Not bc it’s controversial (it’s impossible to make a brand name that everyone likes) but a lot of ppl have been telling me that ‘venture’ reminds them of ‘adventure’ - aka outdoors-y vibes which is the OPPOSITE of what I’m going for 😂. Doing this project publicly really has its perks, I’m gonna hit the drawing board again and see if I can possibly come up with something better 💪🏾
I think the logo is a miss. It looks more like an "F." If your graphic designer really wants to work with triangles, just flip it 180* and make it look more like a "V," thus fitting the name Ventr Nation. He'd also have to rework the cut, but I'm sure he can figure that one out better than me.
Great feedback! It does have a sort of f-like look to it, but obviously not an F as well. I’ve been debating over the last few days if this is the right name - I’ve got some new feedback to help me make my decision - thanks again!
agreed! But I've decided to change the name for a few other reasons as well. Keep an eye out for the next Building a Backpack episode where I explai why ❤️
Without giving away your actual design. Why not talk a bit about what are the problems you've experienced with the current pack market. And how you're looking to overcome them. All pack designs, no matter their intended purpose. Revolve around two distinct but often conflicting areas, comfort and utility. Comfort is the overall harness system. Plus some other secret sauce. The utility is the bag that holds and organizes what you're carrying. Unfortunately, many people, even designers, don't always throughly understand how the design of each area can both work for and against each other. I design, manufacture and sell packs globally that are worn by people carrying loads of upwards of 25 to 40 pounds, traveling anywhere between 10 and 30 miles a day, in frequently remote areas and often for months on end. And they are often significantly lighter than 90% of travel packs. I really do encourage you.to persue your dreams. Just remember that beyond all the glitz of fancy marketing, branding, design, etc. You need a clear vision of what problems you're trying to solve. With that clearly defined, you can use it as sounding board upon which to measure all the many little decisions you have to resolve. Just keep asking yourself. Is this decision taking me closer to solving my problem. Or driving me away. Good luck!
Great points! Believe me, the part of the process that I am most excited about is talking about the pack and the unique problems it will solve and the function and form - but that content is just frankly going to be so much better once I have an actual physical prototype in my hands. Plus we will be revealing all this information to the email list in the next few weeks (which I'm so stoked for). Hope you are there to see the design reveal!
I love your stuff man but the spelling of venture is just not it. Almost as bad as boldr. Good luck though, it might fine if the external branding just has the logo and you save the word for internal branding.
@@Nomads.Nation Yeah I generally dislike it but as you outlined it can be hard to go for something generic so maybe it will grow on me. I think it mostly looks bad when the spelling is loudly branded on the outside and just looks a bit silly.
As much as I love this channel and want it to succeed, I have to agree with this as well. The name "Ventr Nation" just doesn't stick, compared with other more popular brands such as AER, Able Carry, Evergoods, Black Ember, etc. If I heard the brand "Ventr Nation" for the first time and never watched this channel, I would have completely no idea it is related to venture.
@@thisistotallyfine great feedback! It’s actually funny, I don’t want to spoil the surprise yet, but over the last few days I’ve also been rethinking the name based on some feedback I’ve been given.
People get used to names though - even Phil Knight said he hated the word Nike when it was first proposed 😂
please do a sling bag for photography too! I1m really excited for this new brand and products!

Thanks so much! It's going to be a game-changing pack
Oooooh that size naming is brilliant!
Agreed on the ‘nation’ part being more of a “dangler”. Ventr is the most important part. Also interesting ideas with the product names - very creative!!
@@Nomads.Nation Thanks, I like the nation part to relate to Nomads Nation. I think those names still relate the community sense you're going for.

Hi Aaron, thanks for documenting this, which service did you use to trademark your name? And how does it work between the US and Europe? How can I make sure that the trademark I pay for is covering me on both continents? Thanks a lot

@@Nomads.Nation thank you Aaron, sure thing will let them know!
@@geraldmcmullon2465 Damn Gerald - you know your stuff! Thanks for that breakdown, and it's great to connect with a backpack-nerd (like myself 😜)
I like the name! that must of been a stressful part of the process thanks for the update
Appreciate that Ryan! And yes, very time consuming to say the least 😅

I know haha, we had to reshoot it cuz V1 wasn’t very good
I love the logo, especially monochrome like that.
I thought that too, but after a few minutes, to me, it helps it stand out from the all no vowel brands.
@@Scott__C that's totally fair.

Name is awesome! I’m buying!
Thanks so much Lou!! ❤️
I also don’t think the typeface works with the blocky logo (to be honest don’t think the logo works with the same either, looks either corporate or like a gaming company, but you like it and that’s what matters!)
So I thought, what do I think of when I think of Venture?
Oh lol, someone has Pakt.

Nice name 😀👍🏻.. ventr (adventure)... ventr nation (adventure nation)

@@Nomads.Nation aight sounds good ty
Without hearing it, all I see is "venter" not "venture"
I don't have an issue with these kinda names missing letters and such too much, but you gotta be careful about how they'll be pronounced in a vacuum.
@@Nomads.Nation yea this kinda stuff is tough, good luck :)
@@ootz0rz tough and time consuming but quite fun - its all a part of the process :)
Opinions are subjective. Pick your name and stick to it!
Appreciate the feedback Sean. Do you feel the same about other brands that aren’t spelled correctly like WANDRD, MUDWTR, and Flickr?
