  • Blue Thunder is a specially modified helicopter. It is for police work, but is armed and designed to counter street insurgencies. It's makers want to show what it will do, but have to train a Los Angeles Police pilot Frank Murphy, to fly and use it in order to allow it to operate in the city. Murphy and the project pilot have differences going back to Vietnam. The conflict between them continues to heat up as Murphy begins to suspect that Blue Thunder is more than has been disclosed.

Roy Scheider is one of those under appreciated actors who we all see but don't really realize how good he is. I like Blue Thunder and Malcolm McDowell makes a great villian. You just look at him and either he suits your purposes or you hate him. Not really a character you can like just he can do things for you that you want no part of yourself. Love the final helicopter chase.

Top notch cast.So many great lines.Fantastic action sequences. When Murphy blows Cochrane out of the sky at the end & points his finger with a "catch you later"....that was just one of many great moments in this highly enjoyable film.

yes the turbomeca sound is genuine, but the most distinctive sound of the gazelle is the Fenestron, this makes the high pitch whistling you can hear most of the time!

No, that's a Hughes. Airwolf hadn't been created yet. That show first aired in 1984, several months after the first episodes of Blue Thunder had already aired.
By contrast, the movie for Blue Thunder was filmed in 1982 and premiered in 1983.

Coming from a chopper pilot, I'm surprised. That Gazelle was dangerous to fly. It was nose-heavy, because the engineers and design team made the simple mistake of constructing the cannon nose out of plywood. "AIRWOLF" was done right, and it was far from crap. But I love this movie as well.

I think this was the first "really cool" trailer I ever saw. "They had the ultimate weapon, and the perfect plan, but Murphy stole their Thunder." Awseome. First time a trailer really made me want to go see a movie.
If you want to see an example of a terrible trailer, find the original "Star Wars" trailer. I saw that in the movie theater back in 1977 and thought, "Oh god, this looks like a terrible movie."
