Catch ya later Roy! RIP to you!
Over 4 decades now since Blue Thunder was filmed (released in May 1983, but filmed in LA during late 1981-early 1982), John Badham's classic still puts most of today's action movies in the shade - and augmented by that great music score from Arthur B Rubinstein.
Remembering the two screen legends who starred in the film & and are no longer with us - Roy Scheider (1932-2008), whose initial motivation to star in the film was so that he would be unavailable for Jaws 3-D (a wise decision !); and Warren Oates (1928-1982), who died of a heart attack, age 53, during post-production and before the film's release, and to whom it's dedicated. The final, touching caption of the movie's end credits reads: 'For Warren Oates, with love for all the joy you gave us.'
Warren Oats and Anthony James were both in the film In The Heat Of The Night with Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger(it was Anthony James’ first film).
Arthur B. Rubinstein’s score was definitely perfect for this film, as well as his score for Wargames. The use of electronic and orchestral instruments in tandem was nothing new but in the 80’s, it was the sign of the times.
The show Airwolf wouldn’t have happened without Blue Thunder.
Although Airwolf has more weaponry than Blue Thunder, Blue Thunder had Murphy, the film’s main protagonist. He is a hero and an antihero at the same time. Basically, he’s a flawed, haunted and likable guy who understands what Blue Thunder can do and what it shouldn’t be used for.
If Roy Scheider were still alive he'd be 91 now, him choosing to appear in this film to make himself unavailable for Jaws 3D I didn't know but given that Jaws 3D was a box-office bomb I'm not surprised.
@@nicholasmaude6906 Roy Scheider’s first film was Curse Of The Living Corpse. A period horror film directed by Del Tenney. He was credited as Roy R. Scheider in the film. He was known for his work in the theater at that time. Film was a new thing for Roy after so many years acting on stage. Del Tenney said that he had his start in theater. The Curse Of The Living Corpse is available on DVD as part of a double feature with the film The Horror Of Party Beach, another film directed by Del Tenney and filmed in New England like The Curse Of The Living Corpse.
The Casio watch. A classic like the movie.
This is one of my favourite film scores and one of the most under-rated, I think. It compliments the movie perfectly. The 80s for me was the peak decade for movie scores. There are almost too many great ones to count.
Yes Sir! Conan the Barbarin was one of the best scores of all time.
I saw this movie..amazing one .The aerial stunts are so badass..
I always wonder how they were able to get permits for some of them over LA? Blue Thunder itself was such a heavily modified Gazelle that it had to be really nose heavy and a bitch to fly. There is no way the FAA would let that thing in the air today.
John Badham HAS to be the most underrated director of them all.
Such a great movie. Great caracters... miss that movie, miss the 80's soooooo much.
Agreed!
YES! The 1980s were GREAT times! Todays movies mostly SUCK!
Yup.
Back in 6th grade, my friends and I would always argue which was better, Blue Thunder or Air wolf. I'm 50 now and I'm STILL a straight up Blue Thunder guy! Blue Thunder kicks serious ass!!! Wooohooo
I agree BT kicks ass but the lady is better
Lol, we had the same debates, Airwolf for me. If we could just go back to these TV shows/ movies and discussions.
Blue Thunder is a police chopper. Airwolf is military and has missiles, sunburst and is More aerodynamic. BT is great, The Wolf Rules.
Had the same arguments. It doesn't matter who was right, the arguments themselves were great fun. Wish I could go back...
Blue Thunder is far superior. Even the one season spin off show was better than Airwolf. Just never got into that show.
Such an underrated and, sadly, almost unknown movie today. Great (real!) helicopter stunts, too.
iconic television series of the 80s. Blue Thunder, Kitt and E-TEAM. Too happy to have been little and grown up with it
I had this wonderful soundtrack on a cassette!
CASSETTE!
Such a perfect piece for Blue Thunder
53歳の親父です!中学生の頃に映画館で見て感動!今更にフランクマーフィーの真似してリストバンドの上から腕時計をしてます!
That Casio Watch is a classic. Nice.
Marvellous soundtrack for an astonishing film!!!
Thank you from France.
Always liked this movie. The first rated R movie I ever saw in the theater with my dad. The helicopter really looked cool. And it was a pig to fly as well . Lol. Cool concept. Still watch it here and there
Airwolf and Blue Thunder both were great shows. But Airwolf's Theme was so much more memorable for me.
Airwolf didn't have a movie in theaters like Blue Thunder, and the latter's series was very bad, it was nothing compared to the movie.
A typical high tech and action US movie of 1980s in my youth :) Thanks 👍
WOW... I really liked this theme tune... but I didn't realize just how much !
If you're interested in the synth sounds, Anthony Marinelli made a video on how these sounds were made on the Synclavier.
I still have my blue thunder model kit
super, this movie was miles ahead from the time it was made,, Roy u rock and even our metallo..
One of my favorite aviation movies
Thank you thank you thank you so much love this and love ❤️ Blue Thunder and the memories it brings back!
back in those days many people wondered what happens when airwolf vs blue thunder
Roy Schneider was the man, how many actors got roles in movies the size of Jaws an Blue Thunder
Love that movie. Wish it would come out in 4k
I remember when it was a TV show
That was airwolf.
@@daleemrick9816No, they made Blue Thunder into a TV series, too.
Different main actor, though.
@@GeertDelmulleJames Farentino, good actor (he played CAG in the final countdown) but the Blue thunder series was god awful.
This is an amazing tribute. Absolutely love this. The sound track and clips are superbly blended.
Roy Scheider as Frank Murphy, the best in the Astro Division
“U mean frank astro.” Sweetheart 🤪🤪
Great movie from my childhood
Great movie.
After all these years, this is still a good movie..
Goosebumps. Absolutely stellar theme.
This movie is awesome 🤩
Blue thunder, Streethawk, and Automan. CLASSICS!!!
I thought I was the only person who remembered Automan.
And Automans car was an lp400 Countach. Probably blew the budget
Brilliant, thanks for sharing
Saw in in the theater ....loved it.
Great film
Great edit and showcase of an iconic 80's action thriller movie. Scheider's acting as the reluctant hero sells every single minute of this movie, and McDowell is superb as the psychopathic antagonist. A great watch, even in today's CG dominated world.
AMAZING ,ETERNAL!!!!
"follow my leader"
Still awesome.
Blue thunder forever 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
I had this helicopter as a toy when I was 8. Loved the movie.
OMG! After all these years, I’m hearing the opening theme tune to InnerSpace!! - The pulling back though ice in a glass of scotch 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
"He checks his sanity with a stop watch!!"
"What do you use? A dipstick?!"
I loved this movie.
Amazing theme and film ❤
Watch it every 5 years or so for thd last 25 years. Saw it on vhs as a 10 year old
I saw this movie late 80's in "Tęcza" cinema, Poland.
That was fantastic.
This was a fun movie to see in the theaters when it came out.
Blue Thunder was ahead of its time. Frighteningly realistic piece of hardware. Never understood the nonsense with Blue Thunder v Airwolf…. Air wolf was nothing more than a toy…. Utter garbage and completely fictional…. Nothing about it stood out. Blue Thunder was the A-10 of helicopters.
Arthur B. Rubinstein
Loved Blue thunder.
Great
A very nice synopsis of the movie!
Great film.
Inspired airwolf.
I loved to watching movie and I was forteen years o forteen years old regarding this movie. this movie contains action, thriller and conspiracy so time spend over 30 yeas but I feel you enjyoy to see this movie.
First full synth orchestra in cinema I believe.
I only watched it as a kid but it’s so much better now I’m older and get the plot fully.
Filmed above hot 80’s America cityscapes I love Murphy’s girlfriend, she’s so tough, will stop for nobody to get that tape to the media. His partner before he gets murdered is so strong, despite torture still desperately tries to survive to get the truth out. Murphy scapegoated by the government and framed for his partners murder goes on the run with his nemesis in pursuit. He’s wounded and with the helicopter malfunctioning like a desperate chased fox has to use his skills to out fly his pursuer, I feel sorry for him, but in the end nobody wins.
I feel like it's actually kind of come true; governmental agencies are kinda out of control. Not using attack helis against the public, but police brutality, warrantless wiretaps, all that stuff.
His partner went on to be a Wet Bandit.
Absolute all time favorite movies. I wanted to be a helicopter pilot because of this movie, but my hearing was not up to par. Man....I wish i could fly.
nothing beats airwolf
That's what's back in the day before airwolf was on TV in 1984
I am a fan of the movie and in LA
Great movie
very happy
Nothing is better than the Airwolf theme!!!
That is correct
ブルーサンダーよ、永遠に
Esas películas 👍👌👏 que se extrañan ver.
This movie clearly showed the close relationship between Hollywood and the American Arms-industry. Look at the simularities between this helicopter in the movie and the H64 Apache which appeared in 1990 in the first Gulf-war.
This movie came out opposite of Return of The Jedi, so it was pretty much destroyed. Roy Scheider was a big star in the 80's however up to about 86. After that it was Stallion.
Super Thunder Blade the game was even more amazing!
NO CGI :)
Second best... and she always will be.
O melhor filme de toda minha infância
In Japan, incidents involving politicians are occurring frequently.
AIrWolfよりもBlueThunder!。超カッコいいですー
Can anyone remember a movie from about this time where the vehicles had Adaptive paint or something like that for camouflage? The only thing I really remember was a guy lifting his helmet off the hood and there was a dark circle cos the paint had adapted. 🤔
Megaforce. Another guilty pleasure!
And iam a fan of blue Thunderand airwolf
ブルーサンダー⚡️
This oner city of Los Angeles back I 1984 when I was a kid be airwolf
In 2028; games for me back in la and airwolf will be back too
"If you're walking on eggs...don't hop."
これ 面白かったなぁ・・
This is why Los Angeles is going to need airwolf for the 2028
Since Blue Thunder was marked 02, I always wondered if there was an 01 that Cochrane was supposed to go get to go after Murphy. I tgink that would've worked better as the military chopper looked outmatched.
If you look at the base machines that blue thunder and airwolf were modeled off, the SA341 Gazelle and BELL 222 respectively, the gazelle is faster and considerably more maneuverable than the 222 ,to the point that there's video footage of gazelles performing loops and other aerobatics, during the filming of airwolf some of the stunts performed by the title helicopter alarmed BELL engineers to the point where they contacted the production team and told them basically something like this "don't do it ,seriously DON'T DO IT !!"
Didn't HBO play this movie so many times that they added it to their list of movies they'd never show again as some kind of weird 80s promo? I remember being so bummed. I loved this movie! JAFO!
" cookie I'm ejecting"
Blue thunder = Airwolf - on steroids . No comparison , this is an attack helicopter you only have to look at it !
Summer Olympics is coming back in2028 los Angeles like it did in 1984
Catch you later

The tech, the corruption of it, and then when the end credits are basically saying such a helicopter DOES exist?
Awesome,go USA flag
Loved this movie as a kid. The special effects werent the best (even for then), but it was a solid movie nonetheless.
