@The Jester - Fool Of Hearts No. The Aztecs usually didn't sacrifice their own people. They sacrificed their enemies. Warriors were paid depending on enemy soldiers captured and with many of the tribes and cities they conquered they demanded tribute of human bodies every year. Thanks SOTL. I love Aztecs so much - infantry in AoE2 are awesome. Champions with 21 attack are OP. Their just a really attacking civ. At my level, it's hard to use Eagles well as they are expensive yet relatively frail
I've been playing AOE since 2000 (against friends, not ranked players) and continue to love and play this game in 2021. It's just an awesome game! Regards from Mexico :)
So glad you've finally made this! Although a little update for your channel would have been nice at the end... ALSO you forgot to add this to the playlist!

+4 Attack halbadierwould be kind of OP, but I would really want your comments on +4 attack champions vs other infantry. (Nice work! Love the videos! keep going!)
Eagle Warrior rushes are surprisingly good on the Castle Age. Most people, on the Castle Age, tend to go for one of the following kinds of units: Knights, Crossobowman, or Monks. Eagle Warriors do a incredible job out of countering the last two, and though they are not -That-Good against Knights, during the Castle Age, their very low Food cost, small anti-cavalry bonus and still all-around decent stats make then food-effective against then. This is more important then it seems because, during the Castle Age, one of your priorities will be researching technologies and gathering the resources to go to the Imperial Age, so if you invest too much food in your army, you may lag behind technologically. I am still unsure if they are quite as good as Knights on the Castle Age, but they can cut it.

Hey Spirit, I thought I was going to pass away before you made the aztecs. Kudos for the great job :) Just 4 thoughts, (the first one is the most important tho): 1) friend of mine (TheGhostmaster) ran the same scenarios for which unique infantry is the best and he found something very interesting. In plain AoC the samurais own jags, hands down (I learned that the hard and painful way) however there is a kind of nerf for samurais in AoF/AoAK since now the matches are pretty even. 2) While the eagle unit line seems to have been nerfed, the fact that you can get eagles in feudal, you can actually pull a pretty decent (and even mortal) eagle scout rush, and keep spaming eagles while you go castle, that strat was not even posible in AoC 3) Atlatl seems to be bigger deal because a fully upgraded skirm has 9 range and 8 attack. Now it is very easy to counter an average brit attack, where in AoC aztecs where very vulnearable to a post-imp brit archer line. 4) Aztecs are kind of a "refined zerg rush", while most of us will agree the most zerg like civ are the goths, aztecs can spam military faster, and even when we know aztecs have not the best infantry (that is the japanese), it is the second best infantry combined with the faster spam speed, and with a very strong eco, you can actually spam units like mad man without caring about they are dead or alive, you just keep spamming until you overwhelm your enemy. Aztecs still have the worst tech tree in all AoE II (making a comparison with the Spaniards who have the most comprehensive tech tree in AoC), they usually will have an awful kill/deaths ratio, but aztecs win by the number. Thanks again for your analysis, I am not let down in anyway.
It's arguable that access to the Eagle Warrior means Aztecs do, in fact, have the best Infantry in the game. The eagle scout rush is good for countering archers, I suppose, but I wouldn't call it a great feudal opening. Scouts are probably a stronger initial opening because they build much faster and in feudal have better stats. Eagle scouts in general also produce pretty slowly, so I'm not sure how effective they are. I'd agree that skirms which out range most civs' archer units completely are pretty powerful.
+Rovsea - Eagle Scout rushes are pretty powerful but you have to take advantage of the tight window where your opponent won't have out enough scouts or archers to counter your eagles. You can make 2 Barracks in the dark age when going up to feudal and then immediately queue up 2 eagles from each one when you get to feudal; they come out way faster than any archers or scouts could, because archery ranges/stables need barracks to be built, and can only be built in the feudal age. It takes at least 50 seconds before you'll even be able to queue up a scout cav, at which point 2 Eagle Scouts will already be about to come out. They aren't as good as raiding as scouts or mass archers, but they're quicker and can harass pretty early.
And now... with a Vietnamese ally you get the most deadly skirm in all AoE, 9 attack, 9 range, 100% accuracy, it is nice to see how a big group of post imp aztec imperial skirms kill palladins :P
Not really. What the Incas need is better civ bonuses. Maybe make the llama the team bonus and have something better in its place. I know that a lot of people are favoring the whole "Upgrade your villagers' armor, tower rush" plan but I wish they had more. I still think an eco bonus of "All Economic buildings Except TC and Dock work 25% faster" would be good.
In my opinion for the incas to be viable they just need a tiny boost to their economy (and a buff to kamayuk movement speed, but that's more of personal preference).
Awww the end of the road for the Conquerors civs :( What will you do after? AK civs, Redo civs, Road to 1800 or another Q&A perhaps? Either way great video. My friend was watching a Resonance stream and heard him say "I should get Spirit of the Law to investigate how much gold is being lost in this congestion of trade carts" So whatcha think? :P
Yeah, Resonance has mentioned Spirit a few times in regards to things like bad lumber camps, trade and other things. I'd love to see them to a collaboration video.
+Sethyboy0 I would like a redone Teuton one and other civs he did long ago, the only problem I see with that though is if his opinion hasn't changed even with the new expansions so only the quality of the video would be different
Yeah, the free loom in the old version was much nicer as it means you can pump out a villie instead of researching loom...also made it easier to wall up middle of BF map quicker and safer than other players because of wolves. Alot of players used to put off loom until castle to focus on villager production & economy first...For Aztecs it was N/A. Now it becomes a consideration, or spend that extra 50 gold to build 10 militia for dark age rush or waller escorts against wolves & enemy wallers. ;)
Time to clear up some misconceptions about the Aztec spear line. Against Cavalry: Halberdiers>Viking Pikemen>Aztec Pikemen Halberdiers enjoy a much higher damage bonus against cavalry than the other 2, and will kill cavalry faster as a result. Viking Pikes can also work well depending on the enemy cavalry they encounter. Their extra HP usually allows them to survive one extra attack unless against Elite Cataphracts, the longer they live, the longer their attack bonus comes into play. Aztec pikes aren't much better than generic pikes against cavalry because the flat bonus damage they get to cavalry overshadows the +4 attack from Garland Wars. Against other units: Aztec Pikemen>Halberdiers>Viking Pikemen This is where the +4 attack from Aztecs' UT shine. Aztec pikes deal 2 more damage than generic Halberdiers, and this really shines in a trash war. Viking pikemen, although the most durable, don't deal enough damage to be effective. They make better meat shields, but better meat shields is misleading information. If you are using the spear line to tank, you are using them wrong. Aztec pikemen are stronger against non-cavalry units at the cost of anti-cavalry capability, whereas Viking pikemen are straight up outclassed by Halberdiers.
Agh, new video! Screw keeping me from my studies. Can't resist. Yeah, Aztecs really trigger my OCD in the late game, namely their trash. They could have otherwise been flawless but as it stands the skirms lack the last armor upgrade and the pikes of course miss halberdiers. Their monks are great though. Whenever I play singleplayer I make use of the pause key to micromanage them as best as possible (usually against a non-heresy civ). It's amazing what monks can do when you give them that kind of co-ordination. Wow, though! We made it through all the original civs and the FEs. I never got a chance to properly play with the AK civs (because my PC can't handle patch 4.3+ for some reason) but I can't wait to hear about them. Berbers and Portuguese always looked really neat to me.
Saurons Mund Haha, ah yeah. I'm getting into that territory where I need to prepare myself for calculus right now (Not Math but Econometrics, close enough). I wonder how long it'll be before the funny calculations he did to find out the more complex equations and the like will seem like second nature to me.
Spectre Oof, yeah. What hard counter do Aztecs have to Cataphracts? Pikes don't really cut it and massed archers while being a good Cataphract killer are more of a good ANYTHING killer. No heavy cavalry (or cavalry at all) to counter them with, as well.
Sam Rodrigues Mesoamerican civilizations have it bad with archers because Cavalry archers and hand cannoneers aren't available to them. At least Mayans have Halberdiers.
You should make Map Overviews. With now knowing how most civilizations work, now you could give us insight on which maps benefits some civilization over others. As well as unique tactics certain maps offer to some civs
Where were you all these years, I played AoK and conquerers for many years (still suck at it :P) and looked for good videos on internet, and years after I quit this game (long before the hd version) you come with these awesome videos, make me wanna start playing this again. Keep up your good work man.
We're not the only ones! Jag-wire drives me nuts. I am not sure where it comes from or when it started but like nuk-u-lar instead of nuclear I wish it would go away and die in a ditch somewhere.
Funny. Jag-WIRE is the native pronunciation following Nahuatl (Aztec) language rules. Of course Jaguars were known as Ocelotl or Tecuani so it's a moot point, but still.
13:31 - Besides, the silly fact of carrying a shield and having no pierce armor kinda drives me nuts. May I recomend to do a quick video with the changes up to the Rajas expansions. Then, you can just put a link withing your old civ overviews and make it up for all at once. Good video, c ya!
We've done it lads! Only the African Kingdom civs left to go. As usual, an excellent video! Personally, I want to see you cover the Portuguese next, but I enjoy all of the African Kingdom civs, they feel a lot more solid than the Forgotten Empires ones. Also, incoming salt about Aztecs not getting A+ for infantry! *cough cough* Celts are better *cough cough*
Garland Wars give ALL INFANTRY +4. This means ALL infantry including eagle and jaguar warriors. I guess with that bonuses it can take both samurai and teutonic in 1v1.
It'd be worth looking at, but post imperial Teutonic Knights are like siege engines, and Samurai have the attack speed bonus... ... But again, it would be worth looking at.
Just found this channel lol. I wonder if they haven't changed anything since u first overviewed a civ. I still dont have african dlc, but seeing its the newest version will have to buy it. Keep the good work and ty for all these overviews.
tightlypackedcoil it's a 2 syllable word jaguar. the U is never emphasized if you speak correct English. it's like Qu words that contain it. similar with gu words. like guru isn't gah U a ru. it goo roo. 2 syllables.
Isn't condettiero a good choice for the aztecs because it's kind unanticipated and gunpowder is something that a castle age peak civ would need to counter?
+Spirit Of The Law Sorry for asking so many questions, but you're the best aoe 2 analyst out there. Can you tell me why not more people use at least one militia to slay the deer during a drush? Seems much easier than harassing woodlines, and denies 540 food for 4 deer killed. Militia kills deer in two hits so it's really easy to do as well.
I would think good sportsmanship is probably the biggest reason people don't, similar to how most people don't send villagers forward to wall around their opponent's gold and stone mines
Spirit Of The Law So it's a good strategy? I was thinking for ranked. I don't mean to be a scumbag at all, but it seems as reasonable as drushing with aztecs anyway.
Stealing enemy boars and killing deer is considered a bad mannered and cheap tactic. There's a reason why you can hear it called "laming" in replay commentary. It's simply a matter of sportsmanship, more than people don't do it because it's not effective. You'll probably be called a lot of mean names and you deserve to be called those names if you do this, but you can totally do it.
Mongols could beat them, their unique unit can kill most units with guerilla warfare. Otherwise, pick a civilization with Paladins, like Persians, Huns, Spanish and counter their trash units.

The strong knight rush and the unic units make it a quite interesting civ.

Now it becomes a consideration, or spend that extra 50 gold to build 10 militia for dark age rush or waller escorts against wolves & enemy wallers. ;)
Time to clear up some misconceptions about the Aztec spear line.
Against Cavalry: Halberdiers>Viking Pikemen>Aztec Pikemen
Halberdiers enjoy a much higher damage bonus against cavalry than the other 2, and will kill cavalry faster as a result.
Against other units: Aztec Pikemen>Halberdiers>Viking Pikemen
This is where the +4 attack from Aztecs' UT shine.
This is the best aoe2 channel on UA-cam💗
Love you!!!!!! Favorite and olny channel I watch!!!!
I feel you. But I believe Spirit will prepare me for calculus almost as well as studying.
Saurons Mund Haha, ah yeah. I'm getting into that territory where I need to prepare myself for calculus right now (Not Math but Econometrics, close enough). I wonder how long it'll be before the funny calculations he did to find out the more complex equations and the like will seem like second nature to me.
Hopefully you never encounter a Byzantine opponent. Keeps the frustration out of Aztec players and retains historical accuracy.
Hey I'm American and I pronounce it Jag-WAR, not Jag-WIRE.
Well, you also seem proud of doing all measurements in a weird way, so no big news here
We're not the only ones!
TerminvsEst i pronounce it Jag u war
zaratrustamaster We actually say Jaguar correctly as opposed to the British pronunciation.
Thanks for the good work sotl !
Great overview as always. Looks like AoK to AoFE are done now. I guess AK civs next? Portuguese hopefully.
Another great overview! Looking forward to the Overviews of the African Kingdoms Civs
Make an updated video on Aztecs!
7:00 loom for free is a great bonus for three reason, the third is that you can wall more safely without losing vills bc of wolfs
This channel is everything that's right about youtube
Jagwire?
That's a west coast thing.
We say "Jag-wahr."
Philadelphia goes a step further, and adds a long a in the beginning, "jay-gwire"
tightlypackedcoil it's a 2 syllable word jaguar. the U is never emphasized if you speak correct English. it's like Qu words that contain it. similar with gu words. like guru isn't gah U a ru. it goo roo. 2 syllables.
Or is it jag-you-are
Jerry Magwire?
As a Spanish speaker, both options sounds just as bad to me. It's Jaguar (ha wore)
Oh si !! so much time waiting :D thx!
nice video, hope to see a malians civ overview soon
I think the Aztecs needs to have the Galleon and maybe the Demolition Ship for at least battling a bit more on water maps
Awesome video once again!
"Mangonel without Faith" should be a heavy metal album.
the intro song is soooo amazing ;o
will you do some civ overviews on Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds? I know its not AoE 2 but the game is very similar.
Isn't condettiero a good choice for the aztecs because it's kind unanticipated and gunpowder is something that a castle age peak civ would need to counter?
love your vids and would be awesome if you uploaded more often! :)
Just came to like :)) Cant await to watch it!! *-*
I focused the informations then saw the comment on 8.25. Hahaa You are funny and smart man ))
NEVER CLICKED SO FAST
never fapped so fast either..
I would like to see you drop some more funny jokes and references. Remember your Mongol Civ Overview? That was awesome.
I don't mean to be a scumbag at all, but it seems as reasonable as drushing with aztecs anyway.
your fly icon threw me for a loop for a second.
Stealing enemy boars and killing deer is considered a bad mannered and cheap tactic. There's a reason why you can hear it called "laming" in replay commentary.
It's simply a matter of sportsmanship, more than people don't do it because it's not effective. You'll probably be called a lot of mean names and you deserve to be called those names if you do this, but you can totally do it.
people do it all the time in pro play. ''sportsmanship'' crap is crap
8:25 "How did it recognize me??" hahahahaha
He wants to mate
Damn, they really have no good options for beating Byzantines on land or water.
Who does?
Good question.
Spanish are very well rounded, too
In case of doubt... 20 siege onagers will do it.
I dunno. Seige Onagers get wrecked by bombard Towers and cannons
Mongols could beat them, their unique unit can kill most units with guerilla warfare. Otherwise, pick a civilization with Paladins, like Persians, Huns, Spanish and counter their trash units.
