@@AhaanM there is a fair difference. Iron clad boosts the armor of capped rams so they have positive armor[think it starts at negative three hack armor] but their ram choice is somewhat wanting duento lacking siege rams. 1:15 There's a couple things I'd like to mention here: - The teuton bonus does three things: It increases minimum conversion time by 1 interval (about 1.25 seconds), maximum conversion time by 2 intervals and roughly halves the conversion chance per interval. For the record, the standard values for these are 4-10 intervals with a 25-28% chance (The latter is what I got in testing, though in the data files it seems to be 25 - not sure if the discrepancy is only down to randomness or if there's some extra effect that slightly improves chances for some reason) - Again for the record, faith increases minimum conversion time by 2 intervals, maximum by 4 and lowers the conversion chance to about 9%. - What you said about buildings not being affected by the teuton bonus (1:58) is not correct. It's less noticeable because they take such a long time to convert from the start (15-25 intervals) but both the min/max times as well as the conversion chance are affect. You can e.g. test the min time by having 40 monks convert one building - enough that it will basically always be converted at the minimum interval. For teutons, that's consistenly a second more. However, this doesn't matter much in-game for the same reason you probably missed it - the conversion times are so long that the percentual change isn't very big. So instead of saying buildings are not affected, "not affected in a very relevant way" would be a bit more accurate :P For some additional explanations on these mechanics anyone interested can have a look at www.aoe2sheet.info/knowledge_base.html#monk-mechanics

Oh - and btw a bit historical stuff: The teutons are more designed to the early german state. If you look on history the germans had many problems with invading eastern clans. Like the Magyars. So the germans to that time spend building very very much castles and wall their villages. To avoid getting raided each year.
You can shove Teutonics in Medieval APCs (Rams and Towers) which makes them a good deal faster, and also gives a good arrow sponge via the Ram if you're rushing them at Archers. This is also worth noting as the sole use for the Siege Tower.
Teutons make a really good ally in team games because while their comp is very expensive, it's really hard to kill. So if they get going it's just one giant death ball just coming at you and you cannot really do anything about it.
Of course they would massively buff the Teutons about a year after this re-upload. Now barracks units get +1 armor in castle age and another +1 in imperial age, so they've got some really OP halberdiers now.

I thought Spirit of the Law was going to mention how the Teutons benefit from having Siege Towers because they are great transporters for Teutonic Knights due to their fast speed.
You can load your Teutonic Knights into Rams to get them around faster and protect them from arrow fire. The TKs can also get out to protect the Rams if your enemy sends melee units. It's not cheap or perfect, but it helps mitigate their weaknesses so it's worth considering if you want to field TKs or Rams as Teutons.
It feels great to see a civ review refresh from you. Looks as good as new anyways. Although, I'm really looking forward to a top 5 navy civs video by you.
Filling rams with TK is an absolutely amazing strategy, since it counters to some extent archer spam against your slow units who are also made a lot faster.
Hey Spirit at 8:49 you stated that the Elite Teutonic Knight's only melee counter is the Elite Cataphract, but by the looks of it you tested it in equal numbers. I'm curious, how do the two fair with equal resources?
Done some testings, the cataphracts still win, though their value seems to skyrocket as the numbers go up. In battles with more than 35-40 units involved, the Teutonic Knights get melted, which shows the stacking strength of trample damage. Finally, I've tried a "post-imp simulation/testing", where I add up the total amount of "trash resources" and then add the gold cost in the mix, as if it was converted via the market at the lowest rate, meaning, 100 "trash res" = 14 gold (or 17 in this case, since both civs get Guilds). This way, the Cats cost around 511 resources (75 gold/0.17 + 70 food) and T.Knights 320 resources (40 gold/0.17 + 85 food. If I use this analogy, and put equal resources, the teutonic knights might win, if the overall numbers on both sides are low. In mass battles (for instance, 30 cats vs 47 knights), the trample damage kicks in heavily, and the byzantine mounted goliaths prevail.
An expensive unit like the Teutonic Knight won't win a battle with equal resources that it lost with equal numbers. The question is, though: why would anyone launch a TK army without any support units? That just shouts for a disaster. You meet 3 Mangonels and you're doomed.
glad to see a youtuber just here for aoe. its one of my favorite games ever and i go back to playing it every now and then same with heroes of might and magic 3
I'm so tempted to consider Teutons for my favorite strategy of pikes + gunpowder, but Goths and Byzantines are just so much more cost efficient and flexible.
T-Knights in rams? Iirc what is in the ram doesn't matter for the speed boost, so you get a speed boost and protection from ranged, then when the enemy closes to melee SURPRISE!
I would argue that the Teutons deserve an A- for cavalry. The Krush (knight rush) is even more deadly because of basically getting free Faith even before imp. age, which I was hoping you'd bring up in the "Strategies" part of the video. This probably gives the Teutons a strong early-game strategy as well as arguably one of the best Krushes in the game
I will give them a solid C or at best B-. In consideration of all the ages. The "deadly" knight rush can be easily countered with pikes. Even WORSE considering they DON'T have husbandry. so much for efficient raiding/hit and run tactics. Wait till you have camels chasing after you for free hits.
Teutons have a rather unimpressive krush compared to other civs. Their only bonus is the farm bonus. The budget Faith I agree is (in general) huge because it shuts down monks, but every other existing krush counter is super-effective against teutons because they don't have husbandry. I'm okay with with a slightly more positive score for teuton cavs, but not because of a not-so-deadly knight rush.
There is one thing I would've loved to see mentioned. Garrison rams with Teutonic Knights and suddenly you can deliver your otherwise very slow juggernauts. It's also delightful thing to sit in the room next to your friend and hear the stream of profanity as 60 Teutonic Knights pop out of capped rams in the middle of their base.
back in the day (extra town center arrow range), i used to make nothing but peasants, DEVOUR all rock nodes, rush to castle age and power build (like 60+ peasants) town centers just out of range of the enemy. it was surprisingly effective.
Age of Empires 2 was the first RTS game I ever played and Teutons were the very first civ I played as when the game came out 20 years ago. They hold a special place in my heart because of that; learning the game by playing them shaped my playstyle into the "defend and boom" strategy that I have used in every other strategy game I've played since (from Empire Earth to Starcraft to Total Annihilation to They Are Billions). Also, TKs are faster than Paladins if you put 10 of them in a Siege Tower (which also helps them survive arrowfire).
Teutons don't have as good defenses as Byzantines. You don't want to be falling back to towers with your defenders, you need their mobility to kill the enemy siege that are flattening your buildings. Most players don't research Murder Holes anyway because it doesn't make an impact in a real game (infantry usually don't hack away at a tower continuously and rams are too sturdy anyway). Teutons' only advantage in defense over Byzantines is that their castles are a bit better at sniping enemy artillery, and that their siege have more range.
So I tried to play as the Teutons for the first time yesterday when I saw this vid off your Patreon, when I have been playing as the Goths for the last week. And HOLY CRAP you were not lying when you said they are slow and “amble” toward their enemies. Because I am such a slow decision maker I just sent so many pointlessly to their deaths because I thought they already made it to their target when they were actually still walking toward them. Was playing against Korean civ and was demolished. 😭✨ #noob
1, my main civ when I used to play at zone. They used to call me a hacker for having a really good economy without needing the jav for food because of the 33%, oh good times XD 30 30 30 14!
i would say that what makes the teutons most dangerous (certainly in the late game) is their unpredictability. the teutonic knight is for me, perhaps up there with the franks throwing axemen, the most redundant unique unit in the game. fighting against the britons? expect tons of longbowmen. spanish? you're gonna get conquistadored. but i have won many games with the teutons without ever using teutonic knights. this may sound like a disadvantage but is actually an advantage, as an opponent that has prepared to counter infantry would get crushed by paladins and seige. also, whilst their archery line is weak, it is still worth churning out (cav) archers - garrisoning them in (post crenellations) castles extends their range from 4 to 13! granted, garrisoning units sacrifices mobility, but if you can successfully fortify your defences with towers/castles, just run your archers to garrison in them where necessary.
It begs noting: A fully manned capped ram is faster than a tuetonic knight-even if it's tuetonic knights manning it. Remember, always travel in style, with ironclad taxis.

Scorpions too, ending up with 11 range with Seige Engineers for civs with Bracer. Gotta love the older days!
Coming Home from a 12-hour-shift this video made my day :)
Thanks, Spirit!
I am so excited... My comment got valued... Slavs (Farming updated, grades not given in last one) and Franks (having an unbiased overview 😅😅 after aoestats.io's discovery of their 1vs1 stat)
Instant liked, I've been waiting for the Teutons remake since you have improved dramatically since the first time you made it. Thank you, this is my 2nd favorite civ
Today is rather scary, going to start chemo, but it feels better with a new civ overview.
Hey man, I just wanted to tune in and tell you that you got this. I, and many others know you are strong and rock solid. We are here for you. You will kick ass!! Good luck Luis!
Thanks to both of you! Thanks to God my operation for the brain tumor went 10/10 , and I could watch all of SotL videos in that 2 week stay in the hospital! His voice is really soothing.
@@exoduslight Awesome! I am glad the brain surgery went well. I wish you many fortunate and awesome days man. Prayers are in for you. Stay positive and stay strong friendo! :D
i love the quality of production of your videos! you are the greatest underrated youtubers!
hey SOTL, I took the 'best civ for you' quiz and got the teutons. so, i play a game against japanese, twice, and get hammered, twice. hope ur happy
Ive been rewatching all the civ reviews for fifth time and this is a God send
I thought Spirit of the Law was going to mention how the Teutons benefit from having Siege Towers because they are great transporters for Teutonic Knights due to their fast speed.
This makes me so happy, to see this one redone. I was hoping you would get around to it eventually!
Spirit uploads
*everyone liked that*
You can load your Teutonic Knights into Rams to get them around faster and protect them from arrow fire. The TKs can also get out to protect the Rams if your enemy sends melee units. It's not cheap or perfect, but it helps mitigate their weaknesses so it's worth considering if you want to field TKs or Rams as Teutons.
Ah there's such a charm to these old Spirit of the Law videos... Wait what?
It feels great to see a civ review refresh from you. Looks as good as new anyways. Although, I'm really looking forward to a top 5 navy civs video by you.
The strategy I developed in my first few games was Tutonic Knights in some Siege Towers. Easily beats their low pierce armor and speed.
You’ve got to be kidding me, spirit! The wait is over❤️
Spirit : re do a civ overview
Me : a surprise sure but a welcome one
Filling rams with TK is an absolutely amazing strategy, since it counters to some extent archer spam against your slow units who are also made a lot faster.
Yes but that's a lot of gold to spend :/
Time to drop all my other games and start playing AOE2 again
Same

Finally my new teuton civ overview !!! Been waiting for that one for such a long time. Love on you
Hey Spirit at 8:49 you stated that the Elite Teutonic Knight's only melee counter is the Elite Cataphract, but by the looks of it you tested it in equal numbers.
@@leventebardossy5962 the only unit that magonel can hit and run XD
glad to see a youtuber just here for aoe. its one of my favorite games ever and i go back to playing it every now and then same with heroes of might and magic 3
Same here friend. Though Heroes has an all-time greater appeal to me!
I don't even play AoE 2.
But i love watching n' listening to your videos anyway
Ikr they are so we'll written
Thanks for the remake. I think that you could keep updating the oldest ones. Love from Mexico, keep the awesome work.
"To the point it's sometimes easy to forget about military at all"
All things in moderation..
I'm so tempted to consider Teutons for my favorite strategy of pikes + gunpowder, but Goths and Byzantines are just so much more cost efficient and flexible.
Hey ! Spirit of the law can you make a new Teutons civ review ? The Teutons has changed a lot in Definitive edition.
Fantastic overview with top notch production. Well done sir, keep it up!
10:40 I see spirit of the law giving amore to teutonic knights! :)
I'm glad you're updating the earlier civ overviews
Teutons review rework?
Alright boys, time for the crusade, to reclaim the holy land.
Do it.
Gott will es! :-D
What a coincidence; I watched the original just a few days ago and thought it’d be neat if you remade it :). Great job!
T-Knights in rams? Iirc what is in the ram doesn't matter for the speed boost, so you get a speed boost and protection from ranged, then when the enemy closes to melee SURPRISE!
And in DE:
-Herbal Medicine is added for better healing in buildings.
-Farms are 40% cheaper.
-Barracks units get +1 melee armor after Castle Age.
honestly they should increase the movement speed of Teutonic Knights to make them at least somewhat useful
PogChamp! He did a rework on the Overview! ♥
Back in AOK, the Teutons were appropriately labelled a Defencive Civilisation. Why the hell are they now an "Infantry Civ"?

Spirit of the law : Remake of Teutons Overview
*CRUSADE INTENSIFIES*
back in the day (extra town center arrow range), i used to make nothing but peasants, DEVOUR all rock nodes, rush to castle age and power build (like 60+ peasants) town centers just out of range of the enemy. it was surprisingly effective.
I wonder if you'll have to redo all of them again with AOE 2 DE
I guess
I hope
I love Teutons. Especially their unique unit Teutonic Knight.
"I say virtually, because this is a videogame"
- i laughed way to loud and long about this.
i would say that what makes the teutons most dangerous (certainly in the late game) is their unpredictability. the teutonic knight is for me, perhaps up there with the franks throwing axemen, the most redundant unique unit in the game. fighting against the britons? expect tons of longbowmen. spanish? you're gonna get conquistadored. but i have won many games with the teutons without ever using teutonic knights. this may sound like a disadvantage but is actually an advantage, as an opponent that has prepared to counter infantry would get crushed by paladins and seige. also, whilst their archery line is weak, it is still worth churning out (cav) archers - garrisoning them in (post crenellations) castles extends their range from 4 to 13! granted, garrisoning units sacrifices mobility, but if you can successfully fortify your defences with towers/castles, just run your archers to garrison in them where necessary.
