It's not a cost free upgrade, it costs 300 food and 200 gold to upgrade a civ to Spanish. Also, it's only a profitable trade if market trading value is not yet bottomed out.
What I like about the Spanish in AoE 2 is that they felt as almost futuristic for the time period most of the civilizations from both AoK and AoC seem to have their castle and imperial age in, with arguably the best cannon galleons, the first "dragoon" unit and arguably one of the best blacksmiths in the game, while the Spanish in AoE 3 are the exact opposite, relying on mostly archaic melee units... One thing not discussed as well as I would like is the synergy between their various gold bonuses. Faster building times for villagers leading to more time collecting resources, plus better trade, plus blacksmith techs costing no gold is a pretty awesome synergy already. The icing on the cake, in my opinion, is the missionary and supremacy. Supremacy because tankier villagers means fewer villagers lost in raids, leading to more resources being collected (compared to the time needed to replace lost villagers), and fewer resources needed to defend them from raids. Even the missionary adds to the synergy if it is used for healing your conquistadors since it's added mobility ensures that they can keep up better than a monk. Their range reduction is also not an issue since they will need to be kept close to your units anyway to keep them safe. To be fair, I am probably overselling their abilities here, but that unusual level of synergy between practically every bonus they have is worthy of mention, in my opinion.
Just a thought about 8:44: it should show how the techs affects each one, like the Ms, more life... To become more clear all the things that are supporting the unit, like the support gems of poe

Spanish were always my favorite civ to play. Their versatility is excellent, and the playstyle is just plain fun. Context: I don't enjoy 1v1s on tiny maps.
Hera just posted a civ ranking for Arabia. He said he thought missionaries are underrated. With the recent uptick of monk use, I look forward to seeing him use missionaries after building a castle and his opponent assumes skirmishers and is surprised.
20 years ago when I started playing "The Conquerors" , I thought this new Civ was the most versatile and that made it the best. Now playing "DE" I still think the same.
65% accuracy with such a high damage unit is actually not a bad thing, if I remeber correctly, attacks that miss can still deal half damage or something like that to other units, so if you focus fire with a group, the inaccuracy creates a pseudo aoe attack
When you showed the missionary and then said not that one, and the conquistador showed up, I further expected you to say not that one and have the villager pop up.
Something that should be mentioned was that the missionary heals at half the rate as monks(i think). A common tactic I use for the spanish is a square formation with 1 missionary for every 6 conquistators. Their mobility and healing allows for survivability when raiding, as well as the ability to convert enemy siege/knights if needed. I also dont get how they get a B+ on infantry and a A- on Cavalry. For both barracks and stables they have full techs, and the same bonus(no gold cost on blacksmiths). They should have the same rating considering they have the same bonuses/all tech. The bonuses to the cannon galleon make it basically a totally new unit. The ability to put the occational cannon on the ocean is huge. Its like having a Bombard cannon on your side during a skirmisher battle. Only downside is that its the most expensive unit in the game at 225w 225g. I gotta say, I disagree with almost every rating you gave. I think they should all be a full grade higher. Having full tech of trash units should be an A, then having a bonus(blacksmith no gold) should make it an A+. Barracks and Stables should be A- at least, with the bonus pushing it into A. Archery range.. i actually agree here. Docks, i agree on the early game but think it should be A for late game. The cannon galleon is argueably the best ship in the game, or at least on par with all the unique ships out there. Monestary should be an A or A- due to full tech. Then the UU and inquisition should shift it up to A or A+. And unless youd be going pure monks/conqs, you will be getting blacksmith upgrades. SO the gold saved from that allow you to make more monks. The strength of spanish is their tech. Correct me if Im wrong, but I think they have more technologies than any other civ in the game. And this is clearly reflected with full barracks, stables, monestary, dock. Even made more powerful with a UU for dock, monestary, and Stables/Archery range. I dont know if I would call them OP, by virtue of winrates you showed. But they definitely are on the stronger side of things.
I think the difference between their infantry and cavalry rating is based on: 1. While Spanish infantry works well, they don't really match with the overall mobile playstyle of Spanish (as highlighted by their Conq and Missionary) 2. Infantry usually needs more than 'fully unlocked' to be great in current meta, as top tier infantry civs relies in broken units/tech/bonus to make them A tier. On the other hand, cavalry are fine as it is.
@@zeroyuki92 good points. However if thats the case, i wish SoTL would mention such. I am really sad/disappointed by the weakness of barrack units in this game. Espeacially seeing how well it was implimented in aoe4. While infantry have been slowly buffed over the years, i dont think its enough. Seen by the lack of such in 90% of games. My recommendation would be 1 of 2 options. Either give all melee infantry +1 range armor. Or make ranged troop reload timer only active when standing still(exceptions for only a few units).
I really wish the supremacy tech came with a minor change to the villager AI. Minimum of either continuing to work when attacked or fighting back with defensive stance rules, but adding defensive stance behavior when in "villager" mode (or a new mode that activates when you tell them to attack) would make them so much more enjoyable to use in a scrap.
Earlier video Spanish was listed with a lower win rate than typical maybe for new players. But now they are doing better than expected. Also they have full technology tree dock they should get an A for water maps playability. They are only inferior on water to dravidians (full tech tree dock + their unique ship) or civs who attack early since they are a bit slow to get going. Full tech tree monastery with unique unit and tech and still A-? I give them A+ for this.
One thing you didn't mention about the Missionary vs Monk debate is the fact that Missionary's are affected by bloodlines. Being much more tanky is a huge help with getting that conversion cross the line - especially in the situation where it might be 10 light cav vs 10 monks/missionary's
A- for monastery, despite a cheap unique tech, a unique unit and the entire tech tree? Seems harsh, as do some of the other ratings imo. Nothing drastic, just felt that sometimes your Bs could have been B+, b+ could have been A- and so on. Would be curious how they compare to other civs that have similar grades
Defend furiously until post imperial, then fast firing bombard cannons defended by paladins with elite conquistadors to help out for a late game rampage 👍😃

The icing on the cake, in my opinion, is the missionary and supremacy.
HE BROUGHT BACK THE INTROS ITS LIKE THE SECOND COMING OF AOE CHRIST
great video.
AoE2 logic - civ gets a mounted gunpowder unit for free, needs to research a tech to get them to dismount
Instant like after hearing the original "music" that appeared after choosing them xD
One thing you didn't mention about the Missionary vs Monk debate is the fact that Missionary's are affected by bloodlines. Being much more tanky is a huge help with getting that conversion cross the line - especially in the situation where it might be 10 light cav vs 10 monks/missionary's
you missed the part where he mentioned that
Yey! Overview
I love these videos. Only downside is my little brother mocks me relentlessly for being a geek lol
Gentlemen, ready the ICBM Galleons, it's time!
4:25 i can never unsee the default cannon galleon shooting balloons
B for the archery range! The 7-9 scale strikes again. It's ok to give them a D ^^
I love Spanish cannon galleons
Defend furiously until post imperial, then fast firing bombard cannons defended by paladins with elite conquistadors to help out for a late game rampage 👍😃
