One of my favourite parts of this is Geoff's love of things not being what you expect. That instrumentation is 100% him using a midi keyboard and his DAW. Not every sound is what you think. For example, the snare in this is two shovels. One in sand, one in mud.

I love Geoff! My 1 year old has to listen to this song at least once a day. All 3 of my kids listen to his A Capella group, Voiceplay, many times a day and my baby can't go to bed without listening to them! Geoffs cover of Sixteen Tons is amazing too!

I'm SOOO happy you got this excited about this one... I find Geoff's version so emotional, he really conveys the feelings of the Dwarves on the eve of the battle with Smaug. I cry every time, can't help it. 🙂
Being you a musician, I believe you will appreciate the arrangement skills of Voiceplay as well. They're just amazingly good, and their arrangements are so rich in details and subtleties. Some suggested "Hoist the colors" as your introduction to Voiceplay, which is good, but I'll differ, and suggest another sea shanty instead, for one of Voiceplay's characteristics that I happen to love is their humour, and "Drunken sailor" showcases it better 😁. And then you can explore their channel... It's all good stuff. 🙂
Personally, I'd like to have your take of more melodic, "soft" songs like "I can't help falling in love", "True colors", "I can't make you love me", or their recent cover of Radioheads' "Creep" (truly a beauty). But they did so many genres, and every time they make the song their own with tons of respect for the original. Take their version of "Golden hour" for example, or their rendition of a classical, orchestral piece from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt", which is "In the hall of the Mountain King"... Hilarious and virtuosic. Or their beautiful version of Metallica's "Nothing else matters"...
Looking forward to watch your next reaction to either Geoff or Voiceplay.
    See you next time!

It will never cease to amaze me how many brand new reactors, both men and women, are moved to tears or stunned silence within the first few Geoff/VoicePlay songs they watch. This is the 2nd reactor I've seen this week who cried within the first week or so of discovering their music. And you never know WHAT song is going to make a reactor cry... that other reactor who cried that I saw this week? He cried when he watched Go The Distance (Disney movie Hercules)
Geoff and VoicePlay have the remarkable ability to hit so many people in the feels, I've seen people tear up while reacting to their videos from just about every genre... not just the obvious "sad" songs. Not all music can reach in and touch your very soul, but Geoff and VoicePlay seem to do so pretty damn consistently. Remarkable talent, remarkable human beings the lot of them.

That 5 octave range is wild, and his arranging skills is enviable. I've honestly learned a lot as an arranger by listening really close to the sorts of changes Geoff makes to the originals. His arrangement for VoicePlay's "I Can't Help Falling in Love" is inspiring, the chords he picks, the weaving of voices... gosh, I could fangirl about his arranging style while others go wild over his deep bass. He's also got one of the most soothing voices out there. I put his audiobooks on to help me fall asleep.

I've been anticipating this reaction since you heard/saw Misty Mountan. Really enjoy your enthusiastic reaction. He has only been doing solo work since 2020 when Voiceplay stopped touring because of Covid. Voiceplay is acapella, Geoff's work obviously is not. He plays everything. The piano is him but all of the instrumentation is played by him on a keyboard using a program that I've forgotten the name of.
If you want to try a Christmas piece, I'll recommend his God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. The arrangement is uniquely beautiful. Or try Blackbird (Beatles), High and Dry (Radiohead) or Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel).
When you get to Voiceplay, start with Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Trust me.

  • @alashandra
    @alashandra 8 місяців тому +5

Love this reaction! You mentioned the changes from the original. You're going to find that with pretty much everything that Geoff and Voiceplay do. Geoff (bass), Layne (beatboxer for VP) and Eli (current Tenor 1, pronounced to rhyme with Jelly), the three main arrangers for Voiceplay, are all of the opinion that it's not worth doing if you just make a carbon copy of the original or of another version. So there will always be differences. The fun is in finding and appreciating them!

Fantastic reaction, and very honest. As a musician yourself you were able to catch things that people without musical training would miss and I appreciate that. Since it is the Christmas season you might want to check out his cover of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman next. I think it’s one of his best arrangements.
Misty Mountains is still my favorite simply because it is so soothing. But this song has so much more power. As a long time Tolkien fan (read them through the first time in the 1960s) I always had a hard time hearing the music from the books. The movies helped a lot because they did put music to the words. But these two are some of the most meaningful songs so I really appreciate the attention to detail he put in.
Another commenter recommended some of the more melodic pieces from VoicePlay where you can really hear their voices without the percussion. I love the full-fledged pieces, but there’s something very pure about their pieces such as True Colors.
You stated you’re a doctor and I’m guessing medical doctor, so I’m going to suggest something different: Queen in 5 Minutes. It has some roots in ancient religions, as the gods of the underworld are involved. This was filmed after the high tenor, who is no longer in the group, suffered a health scare. As a piece of music it is sensational. When you add the storytelling that’s going on it is a masterpiece.
VoicePlay has been performing in one way or another since 1997 when as high school graduates they issued their first album under a different group name. Around 2010 they re-branded themselves VoicePlay and the lineup changed somewhat.
The current beatboxer had been the baritone. But when their beat boxer left to pursue an acting career he switched over and they brought in another baritone Tony Wakim who was with them until 2017. Around that same time they brought in their rock tenor Eli Jacobsen. In 2017 Tony left and they brought in J None who was with them until 2021 when the US Navy recruited him to sing. Just before that, in 2020 their laser hi tenor Earl left for personal reasons and has not been replaced. Eli has taken over a lot of those high tenor parts with help from the newest baritone Cesar de la Rosa.
They are down to four permanent members right now and bring in guest artists to fill in that extra slot. Many of those guest artists have appeared several times. J, who left in 2021 comes back as often as possible when he is on leave.
You can always find who is in the production by going down to the credits were they will list everyone. When you read the credits you’ll notice that the person who did the arrangement did almost everything else. Video, video edit, audio edit, arranging for costuming venue the works. Eli, the tech wizard, does most of the lighting these days and has explored digital backgrounds as well as doing some of the more recent arrangements. His second solo arrangement was Creep by Radiohead And it’s a tour de force . As an introspective introvert, I frequently doubt myself and this piece brings me to tears almost every time.
Welcome to the crazy people who follow Geoff and VoicePlay pretty closely. We’re crazy bunch but very friendly😊.

As luck would have it they saved the costumes and Kathy only had to add a couple pieces and an extra prop or two. The makeup magic man Rick Underwood kept the hair, beard, and mustache pieces. I don't know if there is a dwarf song in the third movie. Geoff and VoicePlay both just released new Christmas songs. Geoffs is Blue Christmas, and VoicePlays is Mean Girls/Jingle Bell Rock.

I will never get tired of watching music nerds freak out about this arrangement. This one is especially fun since you're a Tolkien fan as well, and it's such a treat to watch people who already have an emotional connection to the song loving the changes that Geoff brings to it. For me, it's actually the visual aspect that I find most striking, since it really leans into the narrative element already present in the song. Just the fact that three of the four dwarves he's portraying here die at the end of the book/movie makes this arrangement way more of a gut punch than the original, imo, in the best possible way.
[Deleted writing/poetry nerd wall of text comparing the original I See Fire with the original Misty Mountains that I will happily type out in a reply should you be interested but don't want to bore you with if you're not 😂]
As you get more familiar with Geoff you'll find that storytelling is something at which he utterly excels. It's what keeps me coming back again and again, to both Geoff and Voiceplay; their productions fulfill my need for story in a way that very few other artists can.
Also, regarding your comment about Geoff being down-to-earth: you're exactly right, and the more you find out about him the more true it seems. The same goes for all the members of Voiceplay, past and present, and I think that's a big part of the draw for a lot of their fans. They're genuinely lovely human beings whose level of skill is commensurate with their absurdly vast reservoir of talent. It's kind of an irresistible combination.
Anyway, this reaction was delightful! Subscribing in anticipation of Voiceplay and more Geoff. 😊

One of my favorite VoicePlay videos is for Hoist The Colours. it is beautiful. If you happen to like metal, their cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters is amazing. VoicePlay recently covered Hellfire from the Hunchback of Notre Dame and I can't stop listening to it. If you like video games they did fabulous covers of The Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim and the theme music for Halo. If you go way back in VoicePlay's history there is video for Still Alive from the Portal that seems to have been criminally overlooked. That video is so much fun. You really can't go wrong choosing any of their songs that catch your interest.
