Why Is Twitch Discovery Not Good for Small Streamers
Twitch sorts their categories by most viewers, which means it is what we call a Kingmaker system, essentially when one Streamer gets lots of viewers, they rise to the top of the category or get more recommendations causing them to get more viewers who come browsing Twitch.
So beginners or small streamers often sit right down at the bottom of the categories and never get any clicks, because nobody scrolls down 20,000 streamers to find them, and nobody uses the filters over here to check by recommended or smallest despite what you might hope.
In reality, very few even check categories, most Viewers actually go straight to their Follower List or Favourite streamer meaning discovery on Twitch is relatively slow to start out.
Think about it, when you type twitch.tv into your bar, it usually auto-completes to your favourite streamers channel, not to a specific category or the homepage.
This kingmaker system has led to A LOT of outcry from smaller creators asking Twitch to do more for them and their discovery and in turn the same reason why educators such as myself or harris often push you guys to diversify across other platforms with algorithms such as TikTok or UA-cam… even if you hate that advice with all your heart.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?
The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.
Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up
By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.
If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.

Nah not too harsh. Everything you're saying is true. If people get the hump then they aren't in the right mindset to succeed. Fun first! Anything else is a bonus.
You know? I think I agree more with what you mean than with the way you put it when you say it's not working harder to stream more hours a day, more days a week. I agree that it's a sign of low effort per hour of content. It certainly requires less mental strength. Maybe the way you put it works better for the majority of streamers, so I'm still intending to share this one with other small streamers.

I stream for 3 hours, 3 times a week and have fun with it. I have grown less and less over time, but I am treating it more like a hobby these days. The small community of regulars that show up are awesome people, and we still pick up people from time to time and having fun is what matters to me most right now. Solid vid Eljay, grinding achieves nothing but burnout.

That's almost exactly what I do, even started it to just have my friends see me playing games I care about or they do. At this point, it's much more like a fun hobby that while I take a little seriously, it's just for fun and the rare bits of money.

Same actually, I've been doing 3 hours, 3 times a week for a few years to balance other things. Growth slowed over the years where I've been stationary for a while, but it's fun with the community I've built 💪🏻
Same here, starting off at 4 hours ish 3 times a week. It's a side gig as I also develop and work on my artistic journey. One of my streams so far is specifically an art stream that motivates me to actually work on more art than I would otherwise, because I LITERALLY have to stream to an audience that is expecting to see some art. Easiest artists-block busting thing ever.
I've taken the last year off of streaming to broaden my knowledge and even studying in fields that I hope IMPROVE my content in the long-term. It also helped me realise that I seriously needed a safety net outside of Streaming and Content Creation, and I can't bank everything on something that's not just feasible. "Stop grinding" is such an important and underrated mindset in this industry. The "Grindset" mentality is severely unhealthy and the sooner people know that, the better. You've never steered us wrong ElJay, and I thank you for that.

@@SAHtoshiDude Well that's the thing. Some people are totally fine with being average or medium size. It's not always about being number #1 in an industry for everyone. Sure you can have that mindset to get you to where you want to go, but even I, with my 870 followers on Facebook, enjoy my smaller community of dedicated viewers. Am I aiming for more, of course, but the competition is too steep, too daring, and too young for me to compete at the top. But best believe I will be having my days in the sun. Happy Streaming!
it literally makes no sense to grind streaming tbh... on my main channel Tuelz i stream like once a week and can get 300 concurrent views and getting 30k views on the stream... i just focus on real videos.... i got 40 million views and 140k subs in the last 3 months like i would literally never have did that streaming. The streams are just random for the fans and the fact i go once a week and dont save them so pppl watch it and it does good plus you can get like $200 of donos for each weekly stream. If i had to give advice it would be just do videos streams tbh arent worth it unless your big

@@SAHtoshiDude no but that's the point he was making... just grind normal content. Streaming tbh is lazy... I make animations... it's something most ppl cnt do so I stand out and streaming is just a random thing indo to connect to the fans outside of animations. Ppl really put streaming first and wonder why they dnt grow. Ishospeed and adin Ross are 1 of a million chance of happening. But me gaining 140k subs in one year is hard but way more common. I seen at least 6 YTs get 100k subs in the this year that I've collabed with. It's way more common then blowing up streaming. You have to get a following first before streaming. Even speed had like 60k subs before he started blowing up. Adin too at like 100k like ppl really be having 2k subs and streaming everyday wondering why they aren't growing. A video can get views and subs forever not a stream. Videos from 8 months ago are still giving me like 5-10 subs a day and I upload everyday do imagine all them combined everyday plus new videos I gain around 1k subs a day which is way more then if I streamed everyday. To me personally streaming and leta plays are the laziest content on YT follow by vlogs

I want to thank you for this. I stopped streaming in June because I was feeling like this. That constantly streaming and not working content like UA-cam was hurting me. I've spent the last couple of months relaxing and planning and focusing on what I want to do.
Fast forward and after thinking about all ive learned in my YEARS of streaming, I've deemed 2023 as my repackage. And everything you discussed here are things that I've came up with on my own. Hearing you say this really made a lot of my anxiety and uneasiness dissappear because I feel like I'm moving in the right direction. It makes me excited to once again start creating and adapting. You really have created a monster in me and I love it. Thank you!
I have felt for a while now that i've lost a lot of motivation for streaming. And your videos helped me reorient my thinking and focus more on other platforms. I started focusing on video editing and design to try and improve what I am doing.

A lot of people do not always have the time to watch a stream, to chat or to show up every day 8h a day like you are doing for them. More people have time for videos that are always available. Twitch is good for letting your viewers enjoy a real time conversation. But time is everyone's most valuable resource. More people appreciate videos (Or even VoD's of your previous streams) more than the time you actually spend live.
Right! I don't watch any streams, but videos I watch at my leisure. People have lives and are busy. I noticed quality of live streams suffer too and videos are always higher quality content.
This is one of many reasons why I have huge respect for you man. When I started I was streaming 4/5 days a week now I'm streaming 2 days a week for an hour or so. I'm finding it so much more rewarding creating content outside of streaming, making and editing videos and learning new skills and streaming is now secondary. Great advice buddy!

I use to get a lot of shame for only streaming twice a week for an hour or so. “You aren’t streaming long enough” was what they said. In reality, I was working on other projects learning new skills to make my content better. I mastered TikTok, launched a horror podcast and leaned how to manage my social media well. I may not have the largest following, but I am proud to say I have very close community of followers and fans. This year, I am working on revamping my UA-cam with a new idea that I will launch in February. Again, learning new skills, having fun and diversifying my content is my goal… and I am hitting that every week.
You’re my favourite creator who helps other creators. Your videos are so high quality, and the video is over before I realise because the topic is so interesting, well presented and your pacing is perfect. You didn’t need to apologise for this, I know it was exactly what I needed to hear. I am so impressed you have all these channels at these quality levels, if you have editors or anyone helping you could you make a video on how to expand your team/find the right people? I’m at the stage where I want to create more but I need help, and I just don’t know where to start looking for someone.
I've tried Editors, but sadly they never work out. Most don't put the time or care in the way I like, I'm not perfect, so I've tried giving people months of practice and feedback. Sadly, most just don't match the style, so I have just decided I'll do it alone and try my best till I can one day find an Editor who gets it :)

We can discuss how much easier it is to grow a YT over a Twitch all day, but it's another thing to experience it first hand. I went from grinding out Twitch streams 4 days a week, barely squeezing it with work (often missimg streams because of it x.x) and ignoring YT to releasing a new vid and at least 1 short every day on YT and just streaming once a week for fun. My YT reached 100 subs in less then 2 months; it took my Twitch 10 months to reach that many subs. I'm still learning and growing, of course, but I feel a lot more capable on UA-cam than I ever did on Twitch. Just my experience is all ^^
Full disclosure, I'm not just grinding daily vids for the sake of grinding; I legitimately just enjoy making content
I was streaming a good amount before starting my UA-cam channel but ended up taking a long break due to some life change (all good things). I fully agree with the "stream less" approach. At the moment I am planning on just streaming once a week on Twitch for a couple of hours or so which is a lot less than I was doing before. My main focus is this little UA-cam channel that I'm slowly working on. I'm not on here thinking I'm going to get super famous and rich, I have just found that I enjoy creating content and its been cool to see how my content progresses in quality as I go! Not everything has been a hit and I can't always post consistently due to time (full time job and family) but it's been fun so far!
Imagine the amazing video you could make in 8 hours that has the potential to be seen for a year or two continuously. Rather then a stream that when it ends, no one will ever watch again
Started streaming in February of this year. What a grind it has been. I really didn't know what to properly do to grow at all until around May I would say. But lately I've just been dropping in stats all around so now I am trying to refocus on making better quality shorts that viewers enjoy and will go from there. I think the biggest struggle part for me at this point is the time/effort on making long form content worth it right now. UA-cam shorts seem to being going in a good direction for me so I am super happy about that. Now just trying to figure out what the next best steps are to grow.
I really appreciate this. I just celebrated 1 year on Twitch yesterday after not streaming for two weeks due to finals and the support I received was over the top. They didn't care that I had taken time off from streaming. I've been active in my discord that I share with a few other streamer and they were genuinely stoked to see me. It's not about quantity. It's about quality yeah?

As someone who works full time but interested in streaming, that mindset really feels like a gatekeeper comment to prevent people who want to look into streaming cuz they can start to believe the falsehood that you have to be LIVE sooooo many hours out of the day in order to grow. Growing IS incredibly hard as a streamer, but my favourite part of it is the real time interaction with viewers. I'd love streaming and content creation to be my full time career, BUT, for now I work a full time job, am a single father and am an active charity activist so I slot my editing/streaming in between. However I do watch your videos and others like it when they come online, I try new practices while editing all the time and see myself improving. Growth has been slow but It does exist.
I appreciate the honesty though. You're a top chap. You won't be destroyed.
This video comes at a perfect time as I've been making this exact transition lately! In 2023 I'm not going to be streaming regularly anymore, instead I'll fully focus on making content for UA-cam as that it the one thing I've gained energy from over the past months.

I started streaming just 3 days ago. This video is a nice wake up call for me, but also, inspiration and a push to put myself out there. I have the youtube channel for a reason, and you're absolutely right about using this first, and then the stream. As someone whos completely new to content creation, any advice(harsh or not) is good to have. Put's me in a real mindset, and not trying to have that grind mentality. I'm not trying to dig myself into a hole that I can't climb out of. Streaming for me right now is for fun, but it's also long, long term goal.

It's a hard truth that I needed to hear. My most successful piece of content ever was a video card review that has almost 60k views. I fell out of making edited content (or any content at all) for over a year. Coming back, I've been streaming a few days a week for a few months, and that video still gets more views every week than all my recent streams combined. I know I need to create shorts and go back to crafting edited videos, but my biggest hurdle is getting that creative bug. I feel like it's this switch with a mind of it's own that decides when it wants to turn itself on, and until that moment comes I beat my head against a brick wall for ideas.

That was a great video, and adds more reason to why I decided to start learning how to use video editing software so I can spread out more. Something about your video though that I wanted to bring up is at the very end there's text saying "subscribing is free" but it's covered with the other items (video link and whatnot). Was that planned, or is that something that can be worked around so the text wouldn't be obscured?

I've been saying the same thing to myself, as someone who has been within the content creation circle for over 8 years now, but only really had true passion for it for the last 15 months or so, it's been helpful.
I work a 9-5 in the UK, and realistically, my time would be much better spent making more on demand content, which is what i've been working on learning now for over a month. Hours piled into passion projects in Premiere Pro, just to get my own editing style ready. Alongside this, streams have been doing well too. But it is upsetting to see people who will go live every single day, skip meals etc and not think to themselves at some point "surely this can't be the right thing to do". Twitch literally doesn't show any form of care for its smaller creators, which is proven with their lack of response to follow bots and hate raids, (I get both quite frequently but we move) when its literally an API feature they need to disable. (I know its more than that, but the bottom line of it is that it could just be a toggle on the list of permissions an app may want)
I'm excited to see what the true benefit will be on a personal scale, when I start to get the content I want to make pushed out, the fuel is there, and so is the match, I just need to spark it and let it go.
Always a pleasure to watch the videos too, insights into things I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. Insanely valuable.

Truly crazy a platform convinced people to literally donate their lives for basically nothing in return. Ive always found that to be a strange phenomena for majority of streamers. Im also really suprised no other company has managed to outperform twitch because so many people are trying their best to make it work
True talk, I’ve found that when I “grind” everyday my “regulars” don’t show up ironically, but when I take a few days off and then stream, my regulars show up. It’s weird, but I guess it contributes to “distance makes the heart grow stronger.” Distance meaning the space between streams and heart meaning the viewership. Best thing we all can do is set up a weekly schedule and stick to that schedule: M/W/F @ 4PM. No more, no less. Thanks buddy! Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻
As someone who has been mostly streaming via Twitch since it's "easy content" - I genuinely needed to hear everything in this video.
I've been wanting to focus more on UA-cam content (long-form + shorts) for a while now, but I've been very tunnel-visioned on Twitch as my main platform, even when I was telling myself that I was just using my Twitch stream as a method to record content, I always ended up hyper-focusing more on Twitch than everything else.
I'm currently in the process of planning out how to run my UA-cam channel going into 2023 using some of the advice from various videos you've provided us. and I think I have a solid foundation ready to go!

I just hit affiliate in a little under 2 months. I like to stick to the days for streaming but vary my times. And I am on so many different platforms. Honestly, the engagement with viewers in Discord is huge, but I value the advise on shorts. I see long streams as my fun time, but I plan to short them all by around 20% so I can focus the rest of that time I already have set aside on growing my skill set and learning more tech to reach people. This is a dream for me, but I also know we live in a different time. Thank you for this video! It makes me feel like I'm making the right decisions as the rest of the world is starting to get back to "normal".

I've been streaming on twitch in almost 5 years, and i noticed this year it's been slow and different, and it didn't feel the same as it use to be on twitch. So i decided to move to youtube, and my youtube is growing, slowly but it's growing.

I 100% agree, LJ. I was streaming 40 plus hours a week, and burning out while growing at a very slow rate. I've recently quit and am in the process of revamping my UA-cam channel to focus on it as my primary content platform as well as short form content for other platforms. My plan is to do this for six months to a year, and then to relaunch my live stream as a secondary means of content creation.

Firstly great video! Love the tips and truth behind streaming/content creation.
I've slowed down my streams to 3-4 hours and only 1-2 times a week depending on work/school and working on outside content. I've noticed a bit uptick in viewership this year averaging 22 viewers over 8 from the year prior.
The grind has burned out so many I know. Take care of yourselves friends and have fun!
Honestly I had a good amount of growth in my first year which was 2020 and I have noticed that my streams have been quieter as of late but I have to remind myself daily that everyone’s back out there doing school or going to work now. and thankfully I know when to start doing things differently and I was quick to realize that I probably have to do content elsewhere just to get where I want to with streaming and growing a community, So I’m glad you put this up to help those who don’t know about things like this! 👍

Eljay with the real talk as always. Streaming IS absolutely easier to do than video editing, and definitely more immediately fun. And we should get to have some fun, right? I'd almost say that's where some of the resistance is to focusing on more permanent content.... but I dunno, this grinding doesn't seem like much fun at all.
As another point, it's very easy to hit "go live", but it takes work to make a good stream. Just like it's easy to open DaVinci Resolve and haphazardly trim some clips, but it's gratifying and rewarding work to learn how to actually make proper videos. Source: me, who is finally getting over her Bad At Video Editing nerves and getting excited about it.

when i started at the beginning of the year, i was definitely a grinder, and it was working at first. but after a while, i hit a plateau and wasnt getting the new viewers and followers. i started to push myself harder, stream longer, more frequently when i could. until it started to burn me out. id see my average views dipping even though i was streaming more and more. now, I stream a few hours here and there, when i feel like it and i feel like my streams have improved a lot because of it. your videos/advice have been so helpful, thanks a ton man!

Watching your videos has helped me a lot. I did most of the things you mention, but you made other aspects more clear to me. I have a job and do streaming as a hobby because I really enjoy it. So it's not just about growing. I made a schedule that fits my life and family and am happy with it. It may not be the best to grow my channel, but as I said, that's not what I aim for. I really like to connect with others, especially other artists. And I found that twitch was a great place to come in contact with them, learn from them and grow together.
I'll keep on optimizing my stream, the technique and setup, and thanks to you I now know where to look if something is not right.

I think one of the huge (and I bet most underestimated things) people will takeaway from this video (in addition to not destroying time / health with streaming) is the power of truly niching down (or focus), as this makes those 'touches' a heck of a lot easier for both algorithms and more importantly viewers. Something I'll be utilizing with my own (secret) channels I started over the last month or so to really utilize experience I've gained over the years on original channel (minus its MANY mistakes) and the sage experience of others such as yourself. hey! I do all of these! I am still new, but it is working ! I think something it would be cool to see you talk about next time (just because I like your content!) is that also, when you get people to come over to twitch, you have to make them feel welcome/give them a reason to stay since its not the same as a 10 min vid. or short! I see some people make this mistake, and they end up having a really big twitch following, but not high ccv! im curious what you would have to say! But this video, and all it contains, are really important thing and I have found all of them to be true in the short time I have been here!

I dont usually comment on most videos I watch but i think you put it perfectly well. I got into streaming just this year just as a side project after completing a my degree in psychology as i missed that regimented part of my life. I have meet some amazing people that i dont think I would have meet if I didint do this and thats why me personally dont look at it in the monetary gains catergory. I do think your points on growing on other platforms are key so again just me personnly i will need to look a t video editing skills. your vidoes have helped me a great deal keep up the good work
Thanks for this! I took a long year break from streaming and content creation in general to rest and heal because I was seeing this "trend" come up a lot. Many of my peers were MISERABLE streaming... I had to ask myself... why? Why keep streaming?

This video resonates with me so hard. I wish i had seen this 2 years ago, i was caught up in the endless twitch grind of long hours and daily streams.
I've suffered burnout and even survived a damn stroke and it's within the past few months I've shifted gears out of my old ways to focus more on UA-cam and other platforms.
I'm learning how to edit, I've started with shorts and I'm working on my first long form video. I'm excited to grow and make good content so that i don't NEED stress about twitch subs and relying on that for income.
Ive just begun doing many of the steps you mentioned so it's reassuring I'm making the right decisions for long term success.

I've taken an extremely long break from streaming. When I first started I didn't realize how much it took to grow. At first, I was just streaming so I could take a look back at the moments of me and my friend playing together, or I just wanted to make people laugh and smile. Sometimes, I don't even know IF I'll get back to streaming anytime soon. I've been mostly recording my gameplays on OBS to look back on. Also, I'm not that good of a commentator in general. When streaming alone, I'm more of the silent type. But to be honest, I found that streaming back in.... 2000 something Idk when I started streaming, probably 2019 or somewhere near there, it was so much easier to stream. But now I just never feel like streaming, it's like the enjoyment of streaming has gone completely for me. I still look back at when I did stream and I am so so glad I have moments I can look back on.
Brilliant video! My biggest issue is that I don't use other platforms to grow and I rarely ever see growth on twitch and then lose motivation.... Great video honestly!

Awesome video! I've actually JUST gotten into Shorts/TikToks over the last 2 weeks (one upload a day, minus 2 days I missed) and the growth has been surprisingly consistent! Not explosive, but consistent. I'll start thinking about how I want to make more long form content too, that's an interesting idea. I'll have to structure my streams in a different way if I want to make long form videos out of them. Using community posts is somthing I haven't been doing either...is there something similar to that on TikTok?
All of this is SUPER hard to do, especially since I also have a 40hr/week day job as well. It's really rewarding to see the follow and subscriber count go up though. Makes me feel like I've made someone smile.

Feels good to know I’m not the only one thinking this. I got burned out from streaming Sep 2022 after being in a contract for 2yrs forcing me to stream 6 to sometimes 10hrs a day. Never had any time to edit or grow elsewhere and felt like I was throwing great content away day in and day out. Jan 2023 i’m now free of that contract and picked up photoshop to start learning how to create my own thumbnails and build a audience on youtube. This video was exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve started on a new this year, I’m aiming for the big 1k this year, I’ve done a couple weeks of a new system for me, weekly schedules, granted I’m small, 460, but since changing things up and streaming on UA-cam, I average 3 streams a week for about 3 hours, and around that I’ve recycled funny clips and highlights from those streams for TikTok, UA-cam Shorts and Instagram Reels, and since making this change I have gone from 406 to 460+ this year alone and I feel this will only keep rising. I agree that grinding is horrible and I struggle personally holding down 8+ hour streams especially daily and luckily I’ve never fell into that pit of darkness. It’s nice to know you are a fellow Poké/Nintentuber. I’m just trying to think with this system, how I can go even further, I’ve increased my editing style and improving the quality side of things when and where I can.
Quite honestly this video is what we need to see in 2023, since Covid and TikTok taking off, short form content has become the new norm for consuming content alongside live streams
I feel so awkward because a lot of my local streamers (streamers who are about my size) are all in this grindset mindset and from my perspective it's quite infectious. It's not the mindset I've taken and as a result it often feels kind of isolating- which of course is probably a lot of the reason why so many smaller streamers adapt that mindset.

i have just recently started to focuse my content on other platforms as i was feeling abit stale and feeling like i wasn't getting anything out of twitch anymore yes i still stream on twitch here and there but recently my main focus has been youtube and tic tok its good to hear exactly what i have been thinking the past few days.
Love this video! I get pretty concerned for my streaming buddies when I see them streaming for 6hrs or 12hrs - like, dang, even from a 'growth' perspective it feels so risky to their health. And so many streamers, especially young streamers, don't really believe deep-down that their time has value. I made a conscious choice not to work a job with 12-hour shifts despite better pay because of the severe health impact out-of-hours ('unsocial hours' for USA peeps I think?) work has, there's no way I'm doing an 8hr stream for a fraction of what I'd get doing my full time job, especially when that sort of regular lengthy stream is going to put me in the risk zone for carpal tunnel and various musculature issues.

Interesting video and as a content viewer first and "streamer" second, this is bang on. I only have so much time in my day to view streams, and if I see that it's a streamer who is going to be on for 5 hours, I'll go watch the streamer who is only on for 30 mins first. My thinking is that the "grinding" streamer can be my backup, but rarely will I actually go to that streamers channel as I usually end up getting distracted by some other content.
Honest to god, more streamers need to see this video. I know streamers who have the grinding mindset mentality, plateuing for months at a time and inevitably just giving up because of exactly what you said. I feel like part of the problem is learning how to edit videos can be intimidating and/or expensive but as someone who taught myself how to edit and finding free but powerful programs like Davinci Resolve, it can definitely be done. I had the same problem of streaming endlessly without seeing much progress and I'm definitely shifting more towards content creation on platforms like youtube before I'm even going to think of streaming properly again. Especially with the ability to schedule videos and premieres on youtube. It's definitely a case of work smarter, not harder. Thank you for this video, I hope it reaches as many streamers as possible!
