I Blew Up A NEW Gaming Channel With YouTube Shorts
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 тра 2024
- I was getting almost zero views on my UA-cam channel, until one day I decided to shift my video strategy and focus more on giving valuable payoffs, challenges, and questions to help keep Viewers watching, and give satisfying endings... after that change, it took me 45 days to get over 8 Million views on a new UA-cam channel focused on gaming.

How To Come Up With UA-cam Video Ideas
Nobody is searching highlights and VODs of somebody with no viewers or following, this is why I don’t tell new streamers to start a UA-cam channel for their highlights. You don’t have an audience yet, which means you need to find an audience by figuring out what they are searching for and capitalize on that.
This is easiest done with Education content, that is what I am doing with this channel. I use tools and common sense to think about what people who want to learn to stream or improve their stream are looking for. I then cater content to fit those needs and release it.

What Is The New UA-cam Update?
Channel page updates are rolling out right now slowly and should be rolled out for everyone by the end of the year, this means now Videos, Shorts, and Live Streams will have their own tabs on the channel, if you’ve uploaded each of them…
No more unlisting Live streams, and of course that means, no more losing watch hours, but more importantly, uploading shorts without making your channel page look terrible and harder to locate your main videos.
Quickly as well, they are experimenting with a new recommendation tool on channel pages so the subs who visit get videos or content on your channel recommended to them based on what they enjoy most, so if someone subscribed to you for shorts, they’ll see shorts rather than videos when they come to your channel.

If I am starting out, I aim to go after topics with low search competition, and low to medium search volume, this is easier to appear at the top of the search results when somebody looks up the question.
Make education content on the topic you want to grow in, if you are a Stardew Valley streamer then you can make videos about “How To Install Mods In Stardew Valley” or “Best Greenhouse Layout For Stardew Valley” or if you are a speedrunner for something like Super Mario Odyssey or Legend of Zelda, “How To Speedrun Super Mario Odyssey - Cap Kingdom Tutorial”
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and VidIQ in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Gaming Careers and Nutty.

I know its a bit different to the normal Streaming content, but I truly believe Shorts and UA-cam are in such a powerful space right now! I put A LOT of time and energy into trying to give you a video that covers EVERY single thing you need to start Shorts on a gaming channel, but let me know if its missing anything! Oh and of course, if you need help generating ideas or anything else 🔴 Try VidIQ For Just $1: ---> vidiq.com/streamscheme/
Great video. Lots of good information. But I struggle with editing shorts. What software do you use to edit the shorts and add all the extra stuff like closed captions and effects. Having a video on that process would be awesome. I really enjoy your content.
Very happy for you! Congrats! I have been following your channels and videos for a long time and super happy to see you hit a home run with the ammount of work you put in!
I love when a short does well, the serotonin boost is immaculate
I’m yet to find a proper way to link them to my longer format content BUT this new video I’m editing (in a style I’ve never tried before) should challenge/ expand my ability to do so
Thanks, confirmed a lot of my suspicions about those numbers everyone was getting excited about (people still thinking like it's long form, YT wouldn't ask for millions of views for monetisation if 1.5k was a big deal) was just test numbers (views without engagement is vanity and all that). I also appreciate this for being one of the first videos on the subject to give actionable specific percentages and numbers rather than just generalisations (also niching which is still misunderstood by many, so thanks for trying there too) which is pretty much the case with all the others, cheers my guy! 🙏🏾
actually goated video, shorts are for sure the move for a creator, this will for sure up my short form game. thanks homie
All you need to know about UA-cam shorts right here, excellent information! Thank you so much for helping us becoming better creators 🤟
Another great video I am trying my best to get better, and I feel like this video, in particular, gave me some inspiration and ideas for shorts that would work with what I am doing. As someone who is very busy, shorts are my favorite kind of content to make. Thanks again, Eljay
The issue I have with research is fighting games are horizontal by nature with always moving action vs fps games that are based around a cross hair. I find a lot of creators in the fighting game niche just doing really lazy gameplay uploads and there’s not a lot of new and exciting ideas in the niche. I think this is due to the format.
I’m trying to make it work. But it’s hard!
Brother, massive thanks for this video. I loved it and such great advice, really appreciate it 🙌🙏
I have to say This has to be one of your most valuable videos!
Thank you!
This was so informative, i'll definitely need to put these strategies into effect on my channel. Thank you!
One form of shorts I want to do more is similar to what you and Vintendo do, but I’m always SO nervous that I’ll be called out for being like “oh you got this idea from *insert person here*, do something original”, but I’m planning on starting something within the week so hopefully it works out!
Everyone on the internet is borrowing ideas from others, so I wouldn’t worry about being called out.
I’d honestly see it as a compliment if someone said I was similar to one of my favorite creators
It’s funny, I actually got the quiz idea from a completely different youtuber and found Vinny way later, I thought Vinny had copied the other guy.
The rule of thumb is to be inspired, I don’t use the same prompts as other people that I’ve seen, I try my own answers, I make my payoffs fit my style such as incorporating gulpin, slug ma, or spending time on motion graphics and sound effects.
It’s all about being inspired and going above the original to be your own.
Super accurate. Thanks for the guidance 😁
I don't know what their doing but I edit everything. Glad your channel is doing well. I started watching your videos a couple years ago when I was still on Twitch. Always good tips for new content creators. If UA-cam allowed it I would load thumbnails for my shorts from my computer like a grown man lol. I went from barely knowing how to use Da Vinci to memorizing the all the important keyboard shortcuts. I started focusing on UA-cam in January this year. There are some very good tips in this video for new content creators. One tip I don't think I saw on this video is posting time. Its almost as important as a hook . I find 9am fri -sat- sun and 5pm for the rest of the week to be best for me. U can check this under analytics -audience after u have posted enough for it to work.
UA-cam and the man who wrote the entire algorithm pretty much has openly said posting time has no long term effect on a channels success or even on individual videos success, and to not factor it in to your growth.
Yeah they do they do say that. Doesn't make it true. I have noticed the difference from my own and a few others channels. Interesting how u only responded to that one bit of my post.
@@TommyBurnsTF2 It's 2AM, I was just trying to let you know that early views from posting time doesn't mean long term success or failure.
Try not to read my reply with an annoyed, angry, or corrective tone, and instead as someone just going, "Hey don't worry, it really doesn't effect it at all, don't stress, post whenever"
Edit: And to clarify in full, you're not noticing long term success from posting time, you're noticing early views coming in due to activity, but those early views don't change if a video will do well or not. If a video is going to do well, posting time won't make that more or less likely, same for if a video is going to do badly.
hella helpful thank you dude
Great analysis! Thanks for the valuable content 👍
Do you have a video that shows how to edit your gaming shorts so that I’m not just slapping a landscape video into a vertical shorts format?
Just when I want to know something, you always happen to have exactly the right video for me!
@StreamScheme I want to build a channel covering Wrestling games, retro and current. I eventually want to transition into playing all manner of retro games. Is this a smart approach?
Once again a really good and informative video! Thank you 🙏
great content, Eljay! you really bring value to the community
Easily your best video. Thank you!
I’m always curious how many subscribers come over from main channels whenever these “I blew up a channel” videos come up
Zero, I don’t promote the other channel and actively tell people not too because it creates sand bagged subs that kill the channel because people who like streaming guides don’t care about Pokémon content so they don’t click, and destroy the videos.
Also, this is a hilarious way to disregard all of the hardwork and effort I put in, and even show in this video.
I'm actually jealous 😳😳 Thank you for this, you are amazing Eljay!
Did you edit the short to get rid of the end in UA-cam studio?
I didn’t, I don’t do stuff like that because if something is working well enough and I’m happy with it, I let it be.
Sometimes time shows small imperfections aren’t a big deal and can be used as learning moments.
About the not-edited shorts… Harris Heller released an OBS plug-in a couple months back that makes it super easy to convert landscape stream content, to vertical shorts. I normally love everything Harris does, but yeah that seemed like a bit of a lazy shortcut to me.
Such useful information here mate, awesome work!
Glad you think so! :)
As a utuber with more videos than subs, I find your outlook towards shorts very inspirational. Thank you.
ya bro ur playing parking tycoon wakeup
Ok so I have two different types of genres I wanna do, stories and gaming. Should I only stick with one or is doin two separate genres a good idea?
Wait do we not have to split the channel? My view on shorts crash and burn after a livestream. Heard you say on Twitch to split the clips and long form
None of your shorts are doing well though sadly, there is no crash and burn. I cover in the video how you're just getting the testing period.
@@StreamScheme Yeah theyre doing absolutely terrible. Ive taken a break from just bruteforcing uploads to reassess my approach. Instead of just uploading for uploading sake and your content has been invaluable for that so thank you man!
Last year I started a channel with gameplay and a podcast format about a specific audio book series. The gameplay didn't do that good, but still more than just 1 or 4 views which is nice. And the podcast kinda "exploded" instantly up to 200 - 300 views. That was insane
This is awesome! Love it!
What about the feature UA-cam has on mobile to convert parts of a video into a Short that then links back to the actual video?
It’s okay, but I prefer highly produced shorts edited from the video because they often produce better results
Streaming Ready or Not with my squad, BUT chat can force me to switch to my handgun at will!
Hey, Eljay. I understand the advice that your channel needs a niche, but I'm wondering something: can that niche have an AND in the middle?
For example, I want my channel to focus on rpgs AND strategy games. Would that make the channel too broad?
You should start smaller, go to AmbiguousAmphibians channel, sort by oldest and scroll through until you see him start to succeed.
Track how many games and what genre they are, you’ll understand.
I found this video at JUST the right time! I was posting almost daily shorts for 4 months, I grew my channel from brand new with 0 subscribers to about 2k. However, around 2 months ago, I stopped focusing on shorts because I felt like they weren’t converting into active subscribers that actually viewed my long form content. My watch time has risen in this time, but most of my other metrics have dropped significantly. I started posting maybe two shorts per week last week, and already metrics are rising again, including watch time.
TLDR: the myth that shorts hurt your channel is false and you should definitely incorporate them :)
i tried streaming on twitch years ago without knowing anything and like this video of yours says; just goinglive wont ever work. do you have a video like this guide butt about making shorts? but a real guide, showing the tool and how to use it? the same way u have one for streamlabs for example.
Really great vid!! The world of shorts always seemed overwhelming to me but these tips make getting into it feel way more doable. Thanks eljay!
Shorts are an insane tool, the only concern I have is why some of them that sit on 1 view for hours then take off, but then stops momentum abruptly at the same or similar numbers. I've heard many people having the same issue, not sure what I'm doing wrong and why it stops so suddenly
Diving into my analytics now 😂
I'm glad editing was a good idea I thought I was doing something wrong 😂🙏🏾
Hey Eljay! I was wondering, should you use Hashtags in Shorts videos or focus more on the wording of the title?
Hashtags at the end of the description, just 3 covering the topic, so for me #youtube #growth #guide
For a Pokémon short #pokemon #shinyhunt #challenge
@@StreamScheme Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out which one for a while through research, I see a mix of both quite often (with and without hashtags)
I don't understand this "Tube-of-You", but I do understand food. Shorts are like the appetizers, and long form content is like the main course meal... but shorts could also be the snacks in between meals... shorts could also dessert after meals... Mmmmmm, I'm hungry.
Is shooter games a good enough demographic? I want to focus on shooter games of all types with the occasional different type of game
Really good material here
Having just started streaming on UA-cam to help diversify my content, this was very helpful for me.
You poppin my dude, nice, keep going
How often should one be making shorts? You had a video that had a schedule but I can't find it at all it was like. Stream Monday, Edit and post short Tuesday, and so on until the weekend. then Sunday you'd make a longform youtubevideo. Something like that?
Everyone is different :) I show how I organise myself in my video a few weeks ago "Mastering 7 Skills"
Personally, I think as long as you have a long form video going out weekly or fortnightly, you're making good progress.
I'm convinced that content creation on youtube is the what I should be focusing on 👍
I need to add a comment here as this video is really gold (for statistics I came here after watching the thumbnail video =))
i put my entire stream of past series when i finish and etnire lets plays.I unfortunately really suck because i don't know how to edit for my life, so i put 6 hour unedited stream on youtube for all to watch since twitch doesn't save and i save the best shorts for youtube as shorts which are little bits of past streams when they are good enough to warrant putting them up.Many pieces i deemed not too great and so i just didn't put them up. I made them myself and i think i didn't do a good job at making them.
I really love shorts content and l’ve seen some grow! 26 subscribers in a month 🙌🏽
Ok, so hear me out: CS:GO but I can only use the desert eagle. I can't use any grenades, knives, primaries, or Zeus', I can only use the Deagle for damage, vests and helmets for defence, and bomb defusal tools for, well, defusing the bomb.
I appreciate this help man 🔥🔥
Shorts are helping me get many views as well. 2 days ago my best short was sitting at 2.9k - yesterday I got one to 5.5k! I know that’s not huge comparatively but I’m happy with my growth, fore sure.
Listen to this dude! It works!
It’s super interesting that on YT longer shorts are more valuable, and on TikTok the 7-15s length is king
Right?!? It’s so wild!
@@StreamScheme Just goes to show the value of figuring out the intricacies of every platform. Can't just one and done a single vid everywhere
I've noticed the not editing shorts trend as well. I believe it's because a lot of Tik Tok gaming clips that have been getting 20k likes or more were not edited. I was very tempted to join them since it is, of course, easier, but I decided to keep editing them. I don't post every day because of it, but quality over quantity, right?
Absolutely quality over quantity, as I say in this video, random spikes aren’t replicable, and why get excited over every 4th clip getting 20K, when every clip can get a million
I know this video is 7 months old but I have been streaming for a mont hand a half and got 10 followers on twitch but whats really impressive is on the youtube side of things. I upload the vods as well as the shorts. Shorts are the most important thing for growth. In the month in a half I have gained 44 subs and 32.2K views mostly generated from the shorts. Because I am small I get so hyped when a short gets over 1000 views. The grind is fun and is making a fun hobby
Thank you Doctor Elj for another scientific lesson on our freaked up, beloved platform 👨⚕️💜
thank you i needed that kick in the ass i will say i was a little lazy an i will get better at this an not be lazy im actually disappointed in myself
23:46 I think the lack of editing is coming from tiktok ppl advertising those websites that automatically change your clips from landscape to vertical so people just use that and think theyre good to go. I dont think the websites allow you to cut pieces out or add anything really.
The only one I recommend is JoinCombo because it’s an entire online editing softwares with actual subtitles tools etc
But you’re probably right
@@StreamScheme I use Sony Vegas (got it cheap lol) but those tiktoks stress me tf out bc I'm trying to learn to edit better to become an editor full time for ppl. so the more ppl i see talk about these websites the more im like fuuuuuuuccckk lmao
Oh absolutely use a real editing software if you can, I just mean the only ONLINE one I’d be willing is combo due to it being a real editing software just in browser
It's so funny seeing pushback against creating shorts
You would think people would love to only have to make videos that are less than a minute, don't need as much screen area filled, and don't need a thumbnail, but it feels like people have excuses ready for anything
okay opened my eyes a bit, called me out about the editing shorts but it's okay. we are going to do better this next time i promise
My biggest issue that I have that I can't find any help on is... I don't know how to edit.
“Please edit your shorts! Why is nobody editing their shorts anymore!”
Well about 2 months ago is when that Aitum vertical plugin for OBS popped up, so most likely these creators are just uploading their raw backtrack recordings and calling it a night
Niche down is very important. I did it with a second channel (Sera's Things) about a year ago and I have 10k subs now. I niched down by targeting furries, hate on it but they have a strong sense of community and will sub just based on that. It's not gaming but by niche-ing down to a specific demo it's helped.
Me with 1500 views on my shorts before 😊😊😊 3:54 and me after 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Lmao. Freaking amazing video and honestly I think this has to br the best out there. Entertaining and informative.
Amazing vids as always. Thank you for your hard work. And your Shorts are incredibly sharp looking. Very bright and jist beautiful looking.
*cries in
Yoga ball? Basketball.
Imma def start using them setting up UA-cam today I took your advice as a smaller streamer on twitch and before I started streaming I got a personality set a goal and set up chat bots and found a genre and boom 2 weeks in 81 followers 12 viewers per stream. donations and bits coming in as well as affiliate you really do give really good advice man thanks 🙏🏽
This video is too good
thank you!
Great content! Too many cuts is definitely a problem for the same reason cocomellon is terrible for kids. There’s a constant “wtf is happening “
Instructions unclear. Now I need a video about how to post a pic of my 'but' in the YT comments.
ElJay - what if my niche doesn't exactly... exist? 👀 I use tarot cards, runes, dice, coin flips, philosophy - to make decisions in choice-driven games. Is my niche... too niche?!
Brother I really wanted to watch this video but couldn’t you have made it in a different format? Shorter maybe? Around 30 seconds? With some crazy fast edits? 🎉
cool maybe you can try getting 10k on a channel with 211k subscribers next? idk
If you mean this channel, subscribers don’t really matter for shorts, especially on an education channel.
UA-cam deplatformed subs as a metric years ago, they just don’t matter anymore, but when you take into account most streamers quit after 3 months education channels like this rarely keep the same viewership long term.
So I just focus on showing the successes I have and making sure I do practical work outside this channel as most education channels tell you guys how to grow with never actually doing the work themselves on any other channel.
But if you’re watching all the transparent hard work I’ve done on other channels, and then tried to make easy and understandable but your only thought is this comment I sadly don’t think you care about any of that, but hey I still hope the videos help!
Would YT shorts be profitable eventually?
I know several creators who started channels this year after the shorts monetisation update, and now their entire living is from
Shorts because they worked hard to grow and now get millions of views
How often should I upload shorts and videos?
Balance it with long form, I personally think 2-3 a week is good as long as long form is going out as well
I don't think UA-cam will let me show my butt on the comments, sorry...
Hmm, but is it possible to get only 10 views on short? 😅 If not then my short is.. Special😅🤣
New short content lore? Non editing video conspiracy theories? Are they even real people?
I struggle to want to make shorts content simple because I find portrait viewing ugly and a sin against the world. Imagine someone hanging their tv vertically. The thought alone makes me vomit in my mouth, but it's clearly a great way to grow people. Love tik tok so why would shorts be any different
__ B
I just want to say that 1) Thanks for crushing my hopes and dreames by telling me 1500 shorts views is NOT good..... and, well.... that's it 😅🤣😪😢😭😭😭😭
Just some honesty and understanding, what would you rather, spend years struggling but feeling like it’s working despite being stuck in a testing stage, or understand early and work to improve?
@@StreamScheme no. I knew it wasn't good. I was just trying to be funny. I figured out shorts need to be about 40 seconds AVT or better. I picked up some pretty good data two months ago putting out one short a day for 30 days. Picked up some good insights. I was getting great 115% watched but the AVT was around 20. I can vouch everything you said is true.
Make something worth watching. Say something worth hearing.
love heart me plz also love your vids so helpfull
I don’t know…. Feels weird to do it on ask…. Hmmmm
Almost did a double take when ElJay appeared in my personal Instagram reels! Spreading the content to many different platforms really works haha!
Ahhhhh…. I don’t use Instagram? What?
