This is a case about Wilson's Disease. Wilson's Disease is a genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern affecting the ATP7b gene on chromosome 13. The inherited genetic defect prevents the correct production of the ATP7b protein, which is a copper transporter, meaning the body's ability to transport copper is impaired. Causing copper to build up. Causing damage to the liver cells by creating reactive oxidative species and forming a sludge in the gallbladder as the acute liver failure in CG causes permanent damage. Autosomal recessive means that in a family pedigree, it can often be seen as "skipping" a generation, as more carriers for Wilson's are introduced into the population.
As the copper spills into the bloodstream, it enters the brain. In normal function, the same protein as found in the liver also transports copper out. But because of the genetic defect, that doesn’t happen. Copper accumulates in the brain, and this metal toxicity begins to damage nerve cells, showing up as motor dysfunction in CG.
Treatment for Wilson's disease when caught early is zinc, which will prevent the body from absorbing copper from daily intake. In acute hypercupremia and liver failure, the only treatment is liver transplant. The qualification of acute hepatic failure is important in placing the patient on the wait list for a liver.
These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. I do not give medical advice over the internet, see your own physician in person for that.

They probably don't know the chemical reaction, just that so many people have gotten sick and died over the course of hundred of years that doing that that it must be avoided at all cost. It's where a lot of superstitions come from, much like eating shell fish or pig is generally discouraged since ancient times under Jewish law since so many people became sick eating those meats, probably because of red tide and triconosis. I understand not wanting to be hypochondriacal, though. I was imagining what the parents, especially the father must've thought/felt throughout the whole thing. "Could be unrelated, just laugh it off" > "Oh, it's just food sickness; it's what I get for trying to be extra, I'll just buy store-bought from now on" > "It nearly killed my kid."
On the flip side, the cooking instigated the incident, but it would've happened eventually given her disease. On one hand, it really, really sucks to be a transplant recipient so early in life; on the other hand, at least she will still *have* a life to live. Also RIP to that 19-year-old, what a horrible way to go.

What puzzles me about this case is the slow burn and as to why 'Wilson's' wasn't diagnosed after the first visit to hospital. Notwithstanding the action of vinegar acid on copper oxide, one must assume that the percentage of this mixed into a potato salad might be high but hardly massive, and given an older person also ate the salad and only experienced discomfort implies her body was not dealing with the copper as it should and that this was a cumulative issue. Surely the protocol on detecting excess copper must always be to check for Wilson's disease?

It is surprising that the copper (2) ions present in the copper acetate formed from the reaction of copper corrosion products/patina (copper oxide and/or copper hydroxycarbonate) and the dilute acetic acid in the pickling vinegar were not detected as the potato salad was eaten. Copper ions have a very astringent metallic taste. Copper sulphate solution has been used as an emetic to induce vomiting in cases of poison ingestion.

(I didn't actually hate him, but I wanted to say something that would hurt his feelings enough that he would let go of me.) I went to the hospital, I was in septic shock with osteomyelitis which caused the severe pain.
I had been misdiagnosed with the flu for several days before I went to the ER. My white count was high but since I was sick often my doctor nor my mom (a retired RN) didn't think much of it.
Not every parent realizes the difference between an overreaction and severe illness. My dad thought I was overreacting, my mom missed the blood work, hell my doctor misdiagnosed me TWICE.
(This is just my outcome, not necessary to read.)
CT scan was performed, severe sinusitis found. Culture performed, MSSA bacteria was cultured.
3 days in the hospital, months of being made fun of my friends (it was pretty funny because I almost died of a head cold), and septic arthritis, I made a full recovery.

When I was about this age my liver started to go wonky. Yellow skin and eyes, vomiting, lack of energy, etc.
I was sent to hospital and had about a dozen blood tests every day for a week, lots of student doctors coming around poking and prodding me, and finally a liver biopsy which was the most painful thing I ever experienced. It feels like somebody sticking a large needle through your ribcage and then jiggling it around in your stomach, repeatedly for about 10 minutes.
I was sent home after a week as my skin returned to normal colour, but I never found out what the problem was. The last I heard from the doctors was that _"every test came back negative,"_ and I can't imagine they wasted anymore time on it as my condition improved.
This was about 25 years ago and I never had a problem since.

Maybe it wasn’t because of your liver, but your gallbladder. I also have a problem with my liver, I had a gallstone stuck in the passage between the liver and the gallbladder, I was scratching myself constantly, bleeding from massive sores that I had scratched into myself. At first the doctor thought it was an allergic reaction, but after months of being this way, I was sent to the hospital where they found out the real reason. They didn’t remove the gallbladder because it was stuck to my liver, so they didn’t completely the surgery. I am going back to have the surgery redone in 3 days, as I continued to have problems with my gallbladder and the last operation gave me a hernia, so they are taking out the hernia and gallbladder, this time. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Hopefully all will go well. If not , well I won’t be around to worry about it, to say the least. Hopefully you will not have a similar problem as you get older. @@kerrynicholls6683 Na, I'm pretty sure there was something "wrong" with my liver alright because the doctors said they could feel that it was enlarged by poking up under my ribs. And it gradually got better when I was on hospital food and a lack of beer. I was only around 18 at the time, and pretty wild, so it may have been from excessive partying! But it was no worse than the average teenager does.
Aside from the yellow skin, and vomiting a few times, I mostly felt pretty normal, but the doctors said that I was quite close to liver failure, even if I had drank a few more beers.
But good luck with your surgery, I hope it goes well!
