My parents would never buy me GI-Joe toys growing up. They were hippies and didn't like the war mongering that it showcased. I pointed out that in GI-Joe, no one ever dies... even when planes are shot down, the pilots parachute to safety but in Star Wars (which they bought for me since the movies came out) people die all the time. Point being... don't be smarter than your parents. Christmas' suck after that and now I know and knowing is half the battle.
Well, warmongering can exist independent of violence. The Joes are a military organization, after all. I never saw the show (it didn't really air in Australia), so it'd help if you could answer this: are the Joes ever shown to be in the wrong? Even a little? Are they ever shown to be making a bad call, overstepping their responsibilities, or in any way flawed and fallible? Because if our stand-in for the American military are shown to be this perfect force beyond reproach then... yeah, kind of propagan-tastic.
Doctor Carrion you didn’t see the whole part of this movie where the brother is a screw up soldier, and his self-serving choices lead to the escape of a bad guy and other soldiers being injured?? While this was basically military propaganda, it wasn’t fighting the “soviet scourge” but an non-national military force, who wanted to rule the world. They are shown making mistakes, which lead to nhaving to retreat, or surrendering to the bad guys. That’s more reality than SW with its ultimate message of: all empire supporters(even Luke’s childhood friends, and almost like himself) are evil, and killing them by the millions poses no moral quandaries. Even a soldier who was brainwashed, forced into indentured servitude, trained to kill, and forced by genetic manipulation to always follow orders. You seem to be wanting personal conflict, and anti-hero’s, in a CHILDREN’S TV show / Movie. There’s a major difference in the intended crowd for Star Wars, and a GI Joe cartoon.
Actually, that might make it way worse. It's glorifying war to children who will have in the back in their mind that no one really gets hurt from conflict. If a plane is shot down, the pilot will be fine. In essence, your parents were correct. However, if you have good parents who teach their children that in a real war, people die and suffer and should not be taken lightly, then sure, letting kids watch G.I. Joe will cause no harm. But there will always be those group of parents who will let the tv raise their kids.
No laughing at Chris Latta's Cobra Commander voice! That voice was responsible for half my favorite bad guys from the 80's. Cobra Commander, Starscream, Kravex, D'Compose and more. Between him and Jim Cummings that's pretty much my childhood right there.
I thought cobra commander sounded like starscream from the original transformers and finding out they were both voiced by the same person that's a surprise and a half

This might be an unpopular oppinion (I genuinely don't know), but I like the way the Kobra Commander sounds. It's unique, and I still think the anger in the voice actor's performence ends up rather intimidating.

I love how the Statue of Liberty's torch is still internally lit, an alteration that had been made in 1916. The movie was made while the statue was being restored, including replacing the torch with a gold-plated one like the original design.
The only way this opening could be more american was if the Joes had a Sentient Cheeseburger duel welding machine guns with Bald Eagle wings wearing a Ten Gallon Hat and using the Flag as a cape!

Much as I find Cobra Commader's 80's voice to be hilarious and Chris Latta did a wonderful job; nothing beats Charlie Adler's intimidating and creepy performance that elevated Cobra Commader from being a joke to a threat. Speaking of which, does anybody else remember G.I. Joe Renegades?
I am sorry to hear that. This is a enjoyable movie. The movie is much better that Nostalgia Critic makes it out to be. I watched it so many times as a kid.
I remember watching this multiple times, when It first came out on VHS, at my birthday party. My friends and cousins all had tons of GI Joe toys. That’s one of my favourite childhood memories, of spending an entire weekend playing GI Joes and watching this movie and the cartoons.
Cobra commander is basically starscream with more scream, No wait Thats just him talkimng, He is probably one of my favorite villains just because his voice.
KingOfMadCows apparently along time ago DC use to own the rights to publish GI Joe comics and created Cobra. But when it lost the rights they wanted to keep Cobra but they had to change it by making it a cult & change the spelling with a K instead of a C. Also Marvel's Hydra was originally a ripoff of Cobra.
+Gerardo Munoz, so many thing is wrong in your comment. Marvel comics had the rights not DC. Hydra and Kobra created way before G.I Joe. Both of them created by same guy, Jack Kirby. Cobra has some elements from both them.
Omg, ty for this. I remember watching this with my brother (who loved watching the old G.I Joe show) on the Hub. I just thought it was so over the top, it was awesome. I had completely forgotten how hilarious we found the Cobralalala war cry until you mentioned it. Also I found it weird how Duke never showed up again after being put into a 'coma'. Huh now I know. And knowing... Yeah you get the idea.
Could you image how awesome it would have been, if they recycled that plot line for the live-action movie. It easily becomes a Billion dollar movie, just on the weight of being bat shit crazy.
can't say I was all that into G.I. Joe growing I guess I came along just a lil bit late for the Joe hype but I didn't know there was a Joe movie, but after seeing this I will definitely have to watch this movie that "COBRALALALALALA" scream was just too freaking hilarious lol
the plot twist of the first was just cheap and embarrasing, and the Zeus satellllite from Retaliation makes the Weather Dominator from Revenge of COBRA looked ridiculous.
Bitch, this toon was made decades ago so how could it be "already better" from the past. Your intelligence is only overshadowed by your view of the obvious.
I can't believe I never realized that was Burgess Meredith voicing Golobulus! That guy really could play any role! I, too, miss the days of snake terrorists. Oh, and two great moments in this movie that the Critic never mentioned: 1. In the scene when Golobulus is explaining the reptile people's history, there's this little exchange that I have always found freaking hilarious for some reason: Golobulus: "(re: The primitive cave people that emerged after the Ice Age) Eventually, they evolved." The Baroness: "(Glancing at a few of COBRA'S more crude and thuggish henchmen standing around looking like total morons) If you ask me, some of them did NOT evolve." 2. (I'm REALLY surprised the Critic didn't mention this, as he, like me, was clearly a Sergeant Slaughter fan) In the film's climax, not only does Sergeant Slaughter single- handedly defeat Golobulus's main enforcer/ muscle with his bare hands, but then as he delivers the final blow, he bellows "AND THIS IS FOR *THE WHOLE USA*!" I seriously expected the Critic to highlight that scene, cheer on Slaughter, and possibly have another Amerigasm!
Yeah, the short cuts computers give have made a lot of 2-D animation look bad. I thought computers would help to make animation better. It's just made most animators lazy, and the animation has gotten worse.
albert453able Yeah. Meanwhile I don't hate AngryJoe despite the controversy. I don't care if a UA-camr decides to go on a break. And if fans are being whiny & unsatisfactory that they can't stand something different. Then I couldn't care less if he rightfully tells them to shut up.
I'm not gonna lie, in my opinion, Doug is the funniest when he's in the chair talking to himself. Not in the extremely elaborate skits with a huge cast, but when he's in the chair freaking out.
ZadnoleyaEdits He went on vacation after he fed up on people mocking and criticized him. That's what he gets for making a very stupid video on Nintendo.
The dude at the beginning of the movie with the yellow (or gold?) snake suit reminds me of the first villain from the first episode of the Berserk anime. Any one else?
Honestly, as much fun as I would have seeing Joe Review this, this was just about the perfect review as is. Doug was sharper and more on point with humor and timing than he has been in years, and there was a sense of genuine enthusiasm.

has anyone seen G.I. Joe: Resolute? It was a modern animated GI Joe film released as minisodes and was freaking awesome. they even make cobra commander, the classic one freaking intimidating
Actually Doug the reason why Duke didn't die was not because of the backlash of Prime Dying but because somehow one of the Parental Rights groups obtained the original script somehow and complained the entire movie was too fucking Dark and demanded it be changed........though Primes death backlash is a new one I've heard though
Kaibaman41 I'm pretty sure that "Prime's death" backlash was mentioned in the booklet accompanying one of the 2000s releases of Transformers: The Movie on DVD.
It's very likely actually to be both. Though G I Joe The Movie was not released theatrically due to the flops of both the My Little Pony and Transformers movies. So it weight straight to video instead, later edited into a 5 part story for syndication. So I guess Parents Groups also looked into video releases at the time then, though it does make sense that Prime's death caused Hasbro to change their minds, since this was released a year after that movie.
Kaibaman41 And then, 30 years later. Hashbro tried the same attempt to kill off Duke's character, but in a sequel to the first live-action G.I. Joe movie, and this time...Duke was played by Channing Tatum at the time. And guess what?! They succeeded, except some people said that Duke's deatg in G.I. Joe: Retaliation left no impact for the remaining characters in the movie. But, I don't think that is true. Duke's death in the movie did leave an impact to Roadhouse, Lady Jaye and Flint, personally. It's just that the execution wasn't handled very well.
Another problem with Duke surviving, beyond the fact that his survival seems unlikely, is that his death was meant to serve a purpose. It was meant to be the final catalyst that sparked Falcon to finally grow up. The training at the Slaughterhouse was enough to start Falcon on his way, but losing his big brother should have been the final shock needed to show Falcon the light. Since Duke doesn't die, the catalyst isn't there. Sure, Duke being severely wounded *DOES* help push Falcon along, but it's not as dramatically satisfying as it would be if Duke had actually died. Here's my other complaint about Duke not dying in this movie: For years, one of the big complaints against the G.I. Joe cartoon was that no-one ever died or got hurt. Pilots whose planes were shot down would be shown parachuting from the downed vehicles, thousands of laser bolts would be fired, and yet, nobody ever got hit, etc. All of this, according to the children's television advocates, was going to warp the minds of small children, teaching them that violence has no consequences, and lead them to lives of mindless mass murder (either that or teach them to be really *BAD* shots). Of course, if you think about it, some character's plane gets shot down and he/she has to parachute out of it to keep from dying is showing a consequence for violence. It also shows that Joe and Cobra characters aren't stupid enough to try and die in a plane crash when they could just as easily get out. As for the idea that no-one got hurt, that's not true. People *DID* sustain injuries in the G.I. Joe cartoon. Granted, they were largely relatively minor injuries along the line of twisted ankles and broken bones, but if Sunbow Entertainment and Marvel Productions had tried to show actual blood and guts consequences of warfare, these same anti-violence advocacy groups would have succumbed to an aneurysm. Which brings me back to my point about Duke not dying: What better way to show the consequences of warfare than by having Duke die? There it would have been, in full, glorious color on the TV screen for children to see: get stabbed through the chest and you will die. Hell, we even got to see blood! But no, Optimus Prime's death was too traumatic for the kiddies, so Duke doesn't die, and we get saddled with that lame "Duke's A-OK!" bit at the end.
All the GIJoes speak English with some variation of an "American" accent. Most of the leadership of the Cobra Organization speak English with a European Accent. In some cases you can nearly identify the area of Europe from which they originate: for example the Baroness - A Balkan European Accent, Destro - An accent from the Continent of Europe, Cobra Commander - How a Reptilian would sound if it were born and raised in Europe, Zartan - A cockney British Accent, Major Blood - Cockney British-Australian Accent. Also NOTE the Cobra organization is headed by what is most likely a shape shifting snake like person, nowadays known as a Reptilian. Are the producers of GIJoe trying to send us a message?

Not even Cy-Kill would mention his Renegades like that.
An Angry Joe cameo would have been perfect!
Yo Joe!
Artydomi AGREED
AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!
Yeah, Joe could have done his Corporate Commander character. LOL!
Artydomi I don't know....with Joe's war against his own subscribers he probably wouldn't have had time to do it
Cobra commander is basically starscream with more scream,
No wait
Thats just him talkimng,
He is probably one of my favorite villains just because his voice.
**watches CNN...while in Japan**
I miss Snake Terrorists
SpookyRoseV *metal gear intensifies*
Okay, Serpendor's 'COBRALALALALALALALA!!' battle cry had me in stitches.
The Cobra Call part made me spit out my water in laughter
Kaity Klutz LMAO 😂 YEPS!
Kaity Klutz Every time me and my siblings watched this as a kid we had to rewind the opening scene at least once just to have a good laugh XD
So what's the deal between G.I. Joe's Cobra and DC Comic's Kobra? Was there any legal dispute between them? There are so many similarities.
KingOfMadCows DC's Kobra is more of Death cult than a terrorist organization. I'll admit there are similarities though.
KingOfMadCows *COBRA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LAH!!!!!*
+Gerardo Munoz, so many thing is wrong in your comment. Marvel comics had the rights not DC. Hydra and Kobra created way before G.I Joe. Both of them created by same guy, Jack Kirby. Cobra has some elements from both them.
Gerardo Munoz It was Marvel Comics who had the rights.
Both Hydra and Kobra existed before Cobra of GI Joe
The Cobra Commander almost sounds like G1 Starscream from the Transformers cartoon...
Also Sergeant Slaughter is the best character in this movie!
The same actor voices Starscream and Cobra Commander. His name is Chris Latta.
If only sargeant slaughter would have been in the movies. His character was 90% why i liked the show
He would not need a big part but it would've been awesome to see him playing himself in a real G I * Joe film.
He was going to be in one of the live action movies. I personally would've liked to see him instead of Brandon Fraiser. Would've made much more sense.
And he Was in only what 6 episodes of the cartoon
"OH NO! Duke is dea-'SLEEPING!'"
DragonRiderW16 And he went to the Dream World.
DragonRiderW16 he was sent to the shadow realm!
"I can see their parachute! They're ok!"
Nice futurama reference.
"They fight for the heck of it because they like to, here comes GI Zapp!"
I'll avenge him you heartless b-BASTARDS!
...It's cool if I say it.
And no one's going to question the unholy scream The Nostalgia Critic emits at 3:04?
Dimitri Amia The Frigging Battle Medic
It's his fangasm scream.
It's because BOOMER... WILL LIVE.
I wonder if he screams like that in bed. :P
That's the very rare fan boy squeal
It's the sound Nic Cage makes when they take his face off.
That random Denny’s “merica” bit was both necessary and funny
I think I became more American just by seeing the opening.
Me too
Then I became Japanese after reading all those animation credits.
That’s how it starts.
You did!!!!

-Nostalgia Critice, 2017
Am I just crazy? I don't hear the last high pitch La. It just sounds the same as all the rest.
If your American pride has been suffering lately, watching this movie is a fun yet perfect cure for that.
No just listen to real american, or play just cause 3
I have Canadian pride
I've got British pride ☕☕🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@ngairebarr1708 Don't lose that pride!
what could you possibly be proud about as an american?
The best G.I. Joe characters are snake eyes and storm shadow for me.
at 3;05 you can here Critics dolphin mating call
You mean 3:05 ?
I loved that sound.
One thing I did not expect from a GI Joe movie was lizard people.
Gizmo fromPizmo Lizard People are Awesome.
I'm not arguing that point.
You should listen to Alex Jones more. He'll tell you all about the lizard folk.
Mark Markham I feel like Alex Jones should've just been a voice actor for GI Joe stuff, lol.
Could you image how awesome it would have been, if they recycled that plot line for the live-action movie. It easily becomes a Billion dollar movie, just on the weight of being bat shit crazy.
I absolutely lost it when he started singing "And I will Always Love You"! OMG that was hilarious! This is easily one of my new favorite reviews!
And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Will always love yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuu FOOL!
Canaan B o
Lol!
can't say I was all that into G.I. Joe growing I guess I came along just a lil bit late for the Joe hype but I didn't know there was a Joe movie, but after seeing this I will definitely have to watch this movie that "COBRALALALALALA" scream was just too freaking hilarious lol
Ace HAMMER it is one of the greatest animated movies ever. Worth watching over and over.
"Anybody want a peanut?" I died at that part! XD
Dreamstrangely I thought that was the best part until I got to "Come on, I'll sing for you!"
this is already better than the live-action movies
yo, the movies are soooo boring.
the plot twist of the first was just cheap and embarrasing, and the Zeus satellllite from Retaliation makes the Weather Dominator from Revenge of COBRA looked ridiculous.
Bitch, this toon was made decades ago so how could it be "already better" from the past. Your intelligence is only overshadowed by your view of the obvious.
that's because some people in my turf they didn't know about the animated movie for the first place before watching Stephen Sommers' suckfest
I can't believe I never realized that was Burgess Meredith voicing Golobulus! That guy really could play any role!
I, too, miss the days of snake terrorists.
Oh, and two great moments in this movie that the Critic never mentioned:
1. In the scene when Golobulus is explaining the reptile people's history, there's this little exchange that I have always found freaking hilarious for some reason:
Golobulus: "(re: The primitive cave people that emerged after the Ice Age) Eventually, they evolved."
The Baroness: "(Glancing at a few of COBRA'S more crude and thuggish henchmen standing around looking like total morons) If you ask me, some of them did NOT evolve."
This looks amazing for the 80s
Gotta love that hand drawn animation.
Arigatou gozaimashita, Toei Animation!
Yeah, the short cuts computers give have made a lot of 2-D animation look bad.
I thought computers would help to make animation better. It's just made most animators lazy, and the animation has gotten worse.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. Its good.
Computers can be a big help. Unfortunately it also helps the people who have no idea or care what they're doing to make something passable.
I feel that Cobra Commander sounds what G1 StarScream would as a human.
Jackie Jones same voice actor
I lost it at "Cobra-lalalala!"

Japanese animation is on point though. Let 'em do what they're good at.

That faceless cobra guy sounds like Starscream 😂
Same voice actor.
Cobra Commander sounds oddly like Isaac from Children Of The Corn.
he does, though not the same guy. CC and starscream both were voiced by the late great chris latta.
Path Evermore Yeah, I didn't think it was the same person. Isaac i
was played by some guy named John Franklin.
13:36 That's the face of "Did I really just get stabbed to death with a snake?!"
Considering Master Asia can rip a giant robot's head off with a headband I feel you have probably seen that face on at least a few of your victims.
But never with a snake though. Something to try out.
So starscreem is cobra..... huh
Silver Dash yep
Yep. And fun fact: Cobra Commander appeared in a Transformers episode.
I LAUGHED SO HARD 😂
Seeing Doug get this excited was fun!!! 😂😂😂👏

The Cobra commander sounds like starscream
Chris Latta he was also on Married With Children
Michael Song same guy
'cause he was voiced by the same guy.
Michael Song yeah he does lol

So this is where AngryJoe got his inspiration...
albert453able Yeah. Meanwhile I don't hate AngryJoe despite the controversy. I don't care if a UA-camr decides to go on a break. And if fans are being whiny & unsatisfactory that they can't stand something different. Then I couldn't care less if he rightfully tells them to shut up.
albert453able yeah.
Bunnyboy King I think the fans are in the wrong with this one. Bunch of ungrateful cunts.
A-Carmine916 Nice burn dude! I stopped watching when he realized that he review First Person Shooters more often than not.
i think he might be talking about the theme
"Dying just builds character."
*stares at Borderlands*
Stares at Dark Souls series
I'm not gonna lie, in my opinion, Doug is the funniest when he's in the chair talking to himself. Not in the extremely elaborate skits with a huge cast, but when he's in the chair freaking out.
Nemesis Enforcer was a badass!!! Took non other than Sgt. Slaughter himself to bring him down!!!
What? No Angry Joe cameo? This review was primed for it! What's Joe been up to anyway?

Oh..........
Mack Debruin Bah Screw Angry Joe he's being a whiny little bitch.
Mack Debruin what happened to him?
ZadnoleyaEdits He went on vacation after he fed up on people mocking and criticized him. That's what he gets for making a very stupid video on Nintendo.
Which stupid video? Can´t find one specific about Nintendo.
Shadowsega V2 Joe is such a fucking wimp that is amazed that people are mean to each other on the internet
I'm pretty sure Doug read my mind when he made that Saving Private Ryan joke.
P.S.
Sainta Row 4 did it first in their DLC!
The dude at the beginning of the movie with the yellow (or gold?) snake suit reminds me of the first villain from the first episode of the Berserk anime. Any one else?

Finally heard Critic fanscream
Don't lie, comment section...
You thought Nostalgia Critic was going to review the G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra movie.
Zero The Bloodedge yep
I did
Zero The Bloodedge maybe....
I did, but then we got something much much much more incredible xD
I would have loved that.
But then again, i wouldn't have gotten this: *Cobralalalalalalalalala!!!*
I don't hear anything like Homer's scream when the exaggerated Cobra war cry commenced
The end of it, he meant, when it goes high-pitched on the last "la."
What? Nostalgia Critic reviewed G.I. Joe without Angry Joe?
BLASPHEMY!
Honestly, as much fun as I would have seeing Joe Review this, this was just about the perfect review as is. Doug was sharper and more on point with humor and timing than he has been in years, and there was a sense of genuine enthusiasm.
Nostalgia Critic should've at least let Angry Joe cameo this review, it's be a lot more hilariously entertaining.
didn't you hear, joe's on vacation from his hectic schedule of crapping out sub-Jahns level movie reviews and sponsored content
what does angry joe have to do with gi joe aside from sharing a similar, extremely common name? stupid comment is stupid.

"I was once a man" too many times to count on one hand and you didn't reference it a single time why?
Just saw this in theaters last week, and the opening alone had me grinning from ear to ear.
THIS MOVIE WAS MY CHILD HOOD also funfact GIJoe made me and alot of my friends wanna sign up with the military...the others got in but i sadly could not....but i still went because of one those two words. YO JOE
I love this movie. Its awesome. I feel ya. Yo Joe.
LOL no my father is active duty army. And when i saw this movie the first time i turn and ask him if he was a joe and being like 6 or 7 at the time he said yes. So at the time i wanted to be a joe just like my father.
@3:44 I almost closed the video because I thought he was done.
Am I the only one getting Starscream vibes off Cobra Commander?
both were voiced by the late great chris latta
Path Evermore cool, the more you know
brandes mears Now you know! And knowing is half the battle!
'LORD MEGATRON, YOU FOOL!'
The late Christopher Collins (or known by his stage name Chris Latta) provided the voices for both characters as well as several others in the animated Hasbro universe. And since now you know and knowing is half the battle, you can now fight that battle........G I JOOOOOOOOOE!
Fun fact. The thing cobra commander was sprayed with began turning him into a literal cobra, who kept chanting "once a man".

was Snake Eyes in this?
By far, the coolest Joe.

Yes it is Awesome.
I'm so happy this review exists. This movie was my childhood and no one ever talks about it anymore
Kaibaman41 I hate Parental Rights Groups. Just rename yoursef into the No Fun Squad.
Now, Nostalgia Critic has to review the Emoji Movie...
Master Vidxad 58 probably when it's out on DVD
The thing is that everything he said in the Norm of the north review, he can apply it to the Emoji Movie. It's exactly what we expected.
Master Vidxad 58 With Jacksfilms
Oh so....nostalgic?
ՏѦBѦH To see him suffer...it's funny to see a person suffer, no?
That intro though...Yes,just yes.
Same as Star Wars. Empire people please used mostly british or posh.
