Oh, few things we missed in this episode: In the UK the GI Joe are known as ACTION FORCE, much like the Ninja Turtles being the Hero Turtles. They redid the theme songs and everything as Action Force and Sgt. Slaughter was changed to Sgt. Slammer! Weird. We also wanted to get more into how the soundtrack needed something like Transformer's Stan Bush songs, but this episode was already running a little long. Hope you know more about GI Joe now, and knowing is half the battle.

Cobra Commander later shows up in an episode of Transformers dealing with synthoid human bodies that the transformers are put into. he's called Old Snake in the episode and he's obviously wearing the face plate and at the end when he's leaving he starts to shout out "Cobra" but he start starts to cough.
this movie was my introduction to g.i.joe , as a kid growing up in Baghdad i did not really understood a word they said but thought it was one of the coolest cartoons i ever seen. the intro song still gives me goosebumps. and my co worker jason faria (whos his mom worked for hasbro) got one of the toys (shockwave) backgrounds named after him.
My older cousins were REALLY into GI Joe, they had ALL the toys, I remember going to their house and being just overwhelmed by them all, especially the giant aircraft carrier.

It got so bad my family and extended family made a rule that if we went to the video store to rent a movie I couldn't rent this because I had rented it that many times! I eventually bought it on DVD and showed them. I still pop it in and watch it from time to time. And, yes, that fucking intro is the best intro of all time!

Because both characters are sniveling and inept, it always cracked me up that Cobra Commander and Starscream were both voiced by the late Chris Latta. He played that type of villain hilariously well! But almost no one who reviews either series (that I’ve seen, anyway) ever mentions this.
It just wasn't this thing. I was big into G.I. Joe... still am in fact. Second favorites were Masters of the Universe and Transformers. There was a ton of stuff back in that era so there was something for everyone.

One thing I liked about the GI JOE cartoon was that they put a lot of detail in the background. Most cartoons would put in bland backgrounds, but I find every scene to be really impressive.
Jinx and Tunnel Rat were my favorite characters on the Joe side. I loved the Swamp Rats team too. Buzzsaw, Torch, Tomax and Xamot.. I was never able to get Nemesis Enforcer, Golobulus or any of the Cobra-La members. Golobulus was a fantastic character.
I do have to disagree with this movie being a starting point if you want to get into GI Joe. Start with the original TV miniseries in 1983 and 84. They are much better without all the weird Cobra-La stuff.
I was only 6 when this came out... I loved it so much... I probably watched that Pythona intro 20 times (if not hundreds)... As well as the Nemesis one when he comes out of the snow/ice... damn that movie was amazing! :)

A few years ago I had the honor and privilege to interview Buzz Dixon, one of the legendary writers on the Sunbow family of cartoons. He said that the writers the shows as part of the same universe. Ace from GI Joe eventually became part of the Inhumanoids, so in a way James kinda knew of GI Joe.
In my mid 40's and clearly remembering how everyone I knew was nuts about this and other cartoons, but listening to the absolutely absurd explanation of the plot, and now I am old enough to realize a lot of these shows were nothing more than 30 minute toy commercials.
Yes and no. I feel that Transformers, G.I. Joe and other the toy-based animated series Sunbow/Marvel were well written and fun, despite being commercials.
Quick Fact : Sgt Slaughter is a WWE character... he was NEVER in the Army... he is an actor and thats it... i've seen a few documentaries about when he was "claiming" he had been in the Army, which was false, but back then wrestlers would stick to their characters 24/7 as if it were reality...

Cobra Commander lived on. He was in the third season of Transformers as "Old Snake". Look it up (you will be glad you did...)
I remember watching that episode and being so stoked. At the end when he is yelling cobra but coughs halfway through is priceless.

I grew up with the original GI Joe series. This movie shook up the GI Joe world for me. I think I was 8 or 10 when I saw this, but I was really into GI Joe. I am sure I have a large case VHS of this in storage, it came with a dogtag. It was fun to see this review! Thanks gang!
