Goofy raises his son as a single father and has to deal with the ups and downs of that.

it's explained in the disney comics as there are 'animals' and 'domesticated animals' 'Domesticated' is more along the lines of Goofy, Mickey, and Donald, wearing clothes and talking. Pluto is just an animal. It's like people that keep monkeys for pets. Same difference to the toons.

The most underrated part of this film to me is the fact that the actor playing Goofy somehow manages to give an emotionally driven performance with genuinely affecting moments while still sounding like the classic Goofy voice. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish, so he gets massive props in my book
Edit: Holy Balls that’s a lot of likes! Thanks!

P.S.: Okay, the Billy Bob's Rockifire explosion reference already got my skin crawling, but then it had to remind me why I'm so terrified of said Crash bad guys, but then it had to do this 9:14 .

I think the reason this movie has had a resurgence in the past few years is because it has grown with its audience. People who were kids in the 90s could identify with Max when it first came out. Now, as adults we can identify with Goofy. The movie portrays both sides of the relationship so well that it speaks to people in different ways at different points in their lives.

The continuity in this film is astounding. Everyone you see in the opening song shows up later at the school. Stacey is skipping by the bus stop, Bobby is on the bus to the school.
The nuns are seen shopping at Goofy's store, on the road, at the diner where Goofy puts Max in Charge of the Map, at the Monster Truck rally, and pulling into the concert.
And the little old lady in the hot rod was shopping there as well.
We even see that MICKEY HIMSELF WAS HITCHHIKING TO THE CONCERT, as his line in the song is "AND IT'S CA-LI-FOR-NI-A OR BUST" and we see him in the crowd after the security guard smashes into the screen.

Just a small point, Max and Goofy don't "compromise" and agree to see what the other wants to see. Goofy makes Max the official navigator of the trip from that point on, meaning that Max is the one who then gets to pick all the places that the stop at. At first, Max picks places that he wants to go, like a theme park and a monster truck rally. However, upon noticing how his father isn't having any fun, but it still allowing him to pick the spots regardless, Max starts picking places that he knows Goofy will like. This leads to the two of them beginning to really have fun together and to grow closer. Not to nitpick or anything, but I actually think that the distinction is pretty important within the film itself, since it not only sees the two Goofs growing closer, it sees Max starting to take a greater interest in his father and the things his father is interested in, which is some notable character growth in my opinion. I'd also say that this is what leads to the scene with Pete at the hot tub being as serious as it is.

I agree, I liked it when I first saw it, made me realize that sometimes we become egotistical in relationships, specially in parent-child relationships, and we want the other to do all what we love and forget what they love.
And then this can devolve in strict parents or helicopter parents (the strict parent it's the parent forgetting what's good for the child, while they do everything to please that parent; helicopter parent it's the one who complitely devotes on the child and forgets their personal life, some of them become codependent depending on being depended on, meanwhile the child become egotistical and demands special cares).
Made me realize that I had to make an effort to know my parents personally other than "they are so nice for me", what about if I become interested in their hobbies.
Then I became a thriller/mystery fan because of my mom every since. And I discovered a new, adult way to religion because if my father (we have always been religious, but from the first years I had the view of a child of religion, the my father made me understand a lot of difficult concepts and now I'm more religious).
I still want to have better relationships with my parents because sometimes I accept that we millennials tend to get entitled, then I force my own parents to become "helicopters" because I subconsciously except them to do them everything emotionally (this is the part that really counts in the end), not who does the laundry, I'd you give money to the household or even if you leave the house.
If you are too emotionally dependant on someone, you start to drain them until they get very tired (because emotional things have a big impact and they tire you in other ways that physically).

@@h193013 Remember, we have 3, possibly 4 games that establish that the main Disney trio are either immortal, or they don't age much.
-Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep shows that 10 years prior to Sora's adventure, Disney Town was a bustling place, and still well into its creation rather than being some new town that was created. They talk about the Million Dreams Festival as if it's been some long held tradition, so we know the town has been around for a good while.
-Kingdom Hearts II shows us that there was a point when the town was at its infancy, when the castle was still being built. Mickey (and the trio when they walked in) looked completely different, and even Donald and Goofy mention how familiar it feels.
-Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance established that there was possibly multiple worlds with them in it, or that this was another phase of their own world at some point when it came to the World of the Musketeers (and while Sora's journey was a trap, Riku's was very much not as he journeyed through the sleeping worlds, which World of the Musketeers was considered) .
-Kingdom Hearts Unchained Key/Union Cross even had them show up in Daybreak town at I believe multiple points, and Daybreak Town was the only world in that game that was real...and it was established that the events in that game were to have taken place 100 years before KH 1.
It's very possible that Goofy could have settled down and had a kid at some point, especially since at the very least the Disney characters live an incredibly long life.

Fan theory - The reason Goofy is so eccentric is because of his own childhood, his own father, George Geef was very hard on him as you can see from the old 50s shorts ,and was also rather neglectful. Goofy just wants to be the dad he never had.

Nice tie in to those shorts--but Goofy’s not a redhead. I agree with your theory, but I extend it by adding that George Geef went though a huge character change after his wife--Peggy Pooch--and his son Junior (Goofy’s big brother) both died in a car crash. And Goofy doesn’t want for it to take something like that for him and his own son to be closer, especially since he himself is now a widower as well.

At the start, Max is calling the trip and all things part of it “lame”, “dumb”, and “stupid”, unintentionally bashing his own grandfather and his dad’s best childhood memories of him, especially when Goofy goes on and on about “My dad and me” stories. But then, when Goofy does the can opener trick, instead of saying “My dad taught me that”, he poignantly and pointedly says “Your grandfather taught me that.” And it is implied that Goofy’s father--Max’s grandfather--is no longer alive, because it is seen in that scene just how much Goofy is missing him as he talks about him with Max, and how much he’s longing to relive those moments through him.

Part of the appeal of this movie is that it's just so different from other Disney animated movies. It's a teen comedy a road trip movie and a father/son story. Right. And maybe not the "down-to-earth" part, but I think if you ask most fans of less conventional Disney movies, you'll get similar answers. People like them for their not-Disney-like elements. Heck, I also really like Treasure Planet. And it's largely because the main character isn't some pleasant dreamer who wants "more". Instead, Jim Hawkins is an angry, restless delinquent kid dealing with his abandonment issues.

One of the realest movies made about being a teen and being the parent of a teen is ironically a cartoon. This is a great and underappreciated movie. That scene with Goofy being torn apart inside because of his son's deception is so powerful, it reaches an emotional intensity rarely seen in movies in general. And that romance between 2 awkward teenagers is so plausible and realistic, both of them not knowing what to do and being realistically uncomfortable. Really good stuff.

I'd submit the Into the Spiderverse franchise as a contender too now. Mile's parents are very realistic in that they are stict with him, but love him, trying to find that balance between what's too strict and push him in the right direction, while having to let go to make his choices. Miles on the teenage side is also relatable, not wanting to disappoint hsi parents, love them, gets angry and embaressed at them, but trying to find himself and how he wants to do things in life. True teh franchise doesn't focus only on their relationship, but everytime I watch that movie, I find their interactions so relatable with neither side being wrong, but still loving an dunderstanding.

I also feel bad for Goofy for not being to deal with the situation in a more natural way, not giving his son a voice (until the final act) which could prevent a lot of problem.

This was the movie my dad and I would watch all the time when I was younger. The VHS was never taken out of the player, we sang all the songs, despite the relationship not being quite the same (Father and Daughter) we still bonded over it. Time passed and my dad and I had a rough patch, one day I rewatched the movie and cried very hard at the "Hi Dad Soup" part. It made me realize that neither side was in the wrong and that I really really missed my dad. I took a can of Thai Coconut and made a fake label out of some graph paper and crayons. I met up the next day and apologized, we both cried and the Hi Dad soup now sits on a shelf in the living room to this day.
I still cry at that scene though.

CauliflowerKeely - Aw, that's really sweet... I love such genuine, heartfelt-moments between close friends and family members. No matter what the cause of any given "rough patch" may be, provided that, when the time comes to make up, both sides have sincerely hung up any lingering thoughts of "who was at fault" and other suchlike notions, the entire experience will ultimately serve to strengthen and reinforce the bond between them :)
Also, I always like when an older person and a younger person (for you, it was between yourself and your pops - for me, it was between myself and my little sister ^_^) end up having something in common that they can both enjoy without either feeling like they've compromised. For me and my sis, that thing was videogames.
One of my very favorite childhood memories is of the 2 months my sister and I (at this time we were aged 9 and 14) actually worked pretty solidly as a team and systematically worked our way through the original Metroid game. We'd trade off between who played the game and who drew up parts of the game world map and helped navigate. Getting through that game together that was SO MUCH FUN! That was the first time that I felt a REAL sibling-bond with my sister.
She's still one of my best friends today, and, of course, we still game together, as often as our job schedules (and relative time zones) permit. She and I live in different states now, but we meet online for a couple hours at least once every week to play Overwatch, or Titanfall 2, or whatever... Actually, a few years back we set aside a weekend so we could play the Portal 2 co-op campaign. And that brought back that same sibling-bond we got back when we played Metroid - it's that synergy of working so well with somebody on a given thing that you both get in that "zone" and you almost don't even need to talk, sometimes; you just sorta "know" what you're both gonna do. ^_^

Goofy and Pluto pretty much have the same face though, and Pluto is smarter than a real dog, so it's creepy. And Donald is like 30x the size of a duck, and he tries to speak English but can't, and he has human eyes on the front of his face, so they come across like horrible gene splicing experiments, and they built a fake town for the abominations to live in, but if they go too far, they'll find electric fence and razor wire, because the word was never meant to see the horrors that take place on the Disney estate.

I recall back in highschool when we were doing research on diseases, someone was given the topic of syphilis (I had to look up leprosy). They Google Image searched it... based on their screams of "OH MY FUCKING GOD," I imagine what they found was far worse than what they were expecting.

Nestama Actually wouldn't be worse for me. I've seen bad stuff and not been shaken. Just both times I was worried someone else would ask what I was looking at. Just it was in a computer lab which had my entire class working on computers. The one time I was working with a partner and had 4 girls working in a group next to me. Some people that insist that "you have to look for it to find it" don't really know how ubiquitous the perversion of cartoon characters can be, to the point that just searching their name with no suggestive words or phrases will lend itself to porn before the first wheel scroll. Just type in "Judy Hopps," come back, and be amazed at how well you can describe her asshole.

Alright, I'm just gonna say it... This movie was my generation's Inside Out. It was a funny, silly, bright and colorful, well executed Disney movie that took a serious heartfelt look at the dynamics of child-parent relationships. Plus, it has (in my opinion) timeless songs, including the VASTLY underrated "Nobody Else But You", and it perfectly represents 90s nostalgia, including the one and only role Pauly Shore was born to play.

I mean I guess, but I'd rather watch this movie than Inside Out which has a lot more emotional moments where its hard not to cry.

I recently watched this movie with my sister, and we had a great time. Also I said the “I killed a mime” line at the end, and she burst out laughing.
