I love Guiding Light too.I've been doing a play that Michael O'Leary (Rick Bauer) wrote Breathing Under Dirt.I have had the joy of being on stage with Michael,Grant Ale sander (Phillip) Cynthia Waters (Annie) Beth Chamberlain( Beth) and Tina Sloan (Lillian).
They say that Mary Tyler Moore can "Turn the World on with her smile." Have they met Bert Bauer? After she transformed from a nag to a loving, caring Matriarch, her smile was glowing and infectious. When she smiled, you smiled.
The original family on the TV version. Love seeing anything with the Bauers. Memories of when this soap was only 15 minutes each day right after Search for Tomorrow.
When I think it’s what a wonderful piece of that era, my mother was 15 and I can understand why she started smoking at 15… We’re going to miss my mom very much ... Watching these old TV shows makes me understand so much of my mother and her habits that we could never talk her out of rest in peace mama
Thank you for posting these vintage TGL episodes, Mr. Sanchez. Papa (Friedrich) Bauer was to THE GUIDING LIGHT as Pa (Will) Hughes was to AS THE WORLD TURNS. Both characters were played on television for 20 years by longtime actors, Theo Goetz (TGL) and Santos Ortega (ATWT); although Mr. Goetz had been cast in the radio role in 1949. Both were the second men to play these characters and did so until their deaths in 1972 and 1976, respectively. These patriarchs were important in maintaining their families' loyalty and stability. The next generation saw Bert Bauer become the family matriarch and Chris Hughes, Sr. assuming the role of family patriarch with Nancy Hughes as matriarch. After Miss Charita Bauer passed away in 1984, the Bauer family mourned Bert's death in 1985; then slowly faded from the spotlight with no elder until Meta Bauer returned to Springield in 1996 after 22 years; albeit Dr. Ed Bauer had been the head of his family from 1984-96. In Oakdale, Nancy Hughes later became the sole family elder after actor Don MacLaughlin's 1986 passing. Good memories of the Bauer and Hughes clans over the years!
As someone who owns the Guiding Light 50th (1987) and 60th (1997) anniversary books and having watched the show, off and on, from the early 1980s onward it's neat to watch episodes from the 1950s and 1960s. Although the anniversary books provide a re-cap of the storylines it's fun to actually see the characters on screen from those time periods. I'd love to see some footage of Roger Newman, who played outrageously jealous Ken Norris. He had a storyline where he attempted to murder Ed Bauer (played at the time by Martin Hulswit). It was a storyline in the mid 1970s that I've only read about but have never seen.
Thanks for showing these wonderful episode love it hope more episodes of the guiding light with the original sponsors on of 1952 53 54 55 56 57 58 and 59
The Bauer’s should had been centered in the 90’s 2000’s not written off in September 1984 guiding light would still be with us loved Ellen as Meta 1953-1974 beloved Papa and Bert and Bill writing of Mike Hope Hillary some years later Mo was the end of Guiding Light 😢

At the end, I thought Bert was gonna break out into “The Wedding Bell Blues” with all those Bills she sung.

I was going to ask if the length was only 15 mins thank you

One of the best actresses in daytime. How her character changed over the years.
The beloved Bauers.

Even with all they went through , They never really stopped loving each other, When Bill was murdered years later , Bert mourned him
Back in 1978, Ed and Rita had the same encounter in a NYC Hotel. Whoa!

Charita Bauer is a blast to watch. Great to see her so young
This is really cool!!
Papa Bauer treated Bert like another daughter. The same with Grandpa Hughes and Nancy on ATWT.
Thanks for theses oldies. Great stuff for us GLfans.

OMG! Is Bert smoking a cigarette? This probably happened when Michael got older. He was a little terror as a child. Lol
They sure did.
beauteous. . .thank you Edwyn Sanchez. It's the soap in Duz that does it!
It's so great to see Bert and Bill happy together. Was Ed born during this happy moment? 😉😉

Why 15 Minutes?
When soap operas originally aired on radio, they were just 15 minutes in length.
