IMPOSSIBLE $500 Chevy Impala LS Flip *Is There Anything That Isn't Broken?*

  • I bought this 2001 Chevy Impala LS for $500 expecting to replace a couple parts and send it down the road running like a top. This 216,000 mile car had other plans in mind for me. After getting the alternator off and removing the belt tensioner assembly I checked the pulley on the power steering pump and found the pump itself disintegrated. I picked up a replacement P/S pump, swapped the pulley, installed the new pump and reassembled the car. At that point I had a random misfire and ABS issues to deal with. I fixed the misfire by replacing all the spark plugs with NGK V-Power Platinum and the wheel speed sensor by soldering the harness back together and securing it all properly. Cleaning the car took hours and I should've outsourced that part of the job. After that I reassembled the dash and replaced many of the burnt out interior lights with LEDs.
    Parts Used:

Gates Belt Tensioner Assembly 38271: amzn.to/2L6MCv0
    Power Steering Pump: amzn.to/2UzgDCT
    Power Steering Reservoir Cap: amzn.to/2VfkxFD
NGK V-Power Platinum Spark Plugs (QTY 6): amzn.to/2VmjlQE

Here’s the gear and camera equipment I’m using!
    Helmet: amzn.to/2zaSAAm

    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make UA-cam videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
    Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Replaced the manifold, the fuel vacuum lines, the MAP sensor and fuel pressure regulator for less than $200 and the car is good as new! Well, as new as a 22 year old car can be. I had an 03 base model i bought when it was only a year old. Great car, very reliable. It was a tank. Lots of city driving, even used as a delivery vehicle for a while. One day, i was driving home at rush hour when an idiot kid in his Mom's Altima drove right into my front right corner. the Altima got pushed 20 feet down the road, lots of damage, stalled and wouldn't start. Had to be towed. I drove the Impala home, It got a new fender and headlight. The alignment was fine. No wonder Police and taxi fleets used these cars.

The 3800 engine always makes me salty just looking at it. I got screwed over by an old lady after many hours of work and about $50 in parts. Did those metal coolant elbows you did that were completely broken, coolant flush, diagnosed several other electrical problems. And the next day I went to replace a bad relay that I had to order, and she says "my son sent it to a shop and got it fixed here is his number he'll take care of you" never heard from either one of them again. So after all i did for them as a favor, they had a shop change a relay and forgot about the work I did so that it wouldn't overheat anymore. Learning Experience!

Been doing this for the last 20 years. Buy a cheap, or sometimes free, car with a solid drivetrain but has issues like this and get them on the road. Little by little you can make a roadworthy car that will last for years for way less money than a car payment. Currently driving a 95 Caravan that runs perfect. Did the steering pump, tensioner pulley and idler pulley, EGR valve, O2 sensor. Got it for free and have less than 300 bucks into it. Gonna do the timing belt, water pump, seals and tensioner when it warms up.

Had an 02 Impala 3800 SFI, non-turbo, named that POS Medusa. EVERYTHING went wrong with that damn thing. Bought it for a grand. Not 2 weeks later had to replace ALL the gaskets on the top end. About a month later damn engine shredded part of the camshaft bearing. Mechanic had an extra engine and had it switched out for another grand. Picked it up and a mile and quarter later sumbitch caught fire when it blew a brake line that was spraying brake fluid on the exhaust manifold. Got that fixed and immediately sold it for $1500 and as the poor sap who got it drove away I could the bearing whine of the water pump!

Nicely done! I've never worked on the 3.8L but i did lots of work on an 03 impala with the 3.4 engine...what a piece of garbage! All kind of electrical components going out on it way before their time, bad lower intake gasket, timing cover gasket leaking coolant, rocker arms popping loose, and more. Only good thing about it: it was not overly complicated to work on.

I had a '00 Impala LS not too long ago that I used as a work car. I always liked these Impalas and found mine for cheap. It never left me stranded, but it was a money pit. Never anything major, but small things kept breaking that were adding up pretty quickly, plus it had over 150k miles. I ended up getting sick of constant weekends fixing what broke during the week and sold it for a little over half of what I paid for it. It took a while to sell too, domestic cars aren't that easy to sell in Florida.
