I love the Buffy and Xander scenes in this episode. I'm glad he was in the episode more, and he was hilarious. "I get it now. Can I have sex with Riley too?" Priceless.
I was really surprised you did not recognize the symptoms as withdrawal. When I saw it the first time my mind went right back where Riley was reminded to take his vitamins in an earlier episode. What is the tape you are mentioning? Do you mean the memory disc (looked like an old 3,5 inch floppy disc) he put into the drive in his chest? I never thought about Wolfram & Hart providing the drugs, seems like a military organization, why involve outsiders.

@@Nicamon well tapes were more common to consumers and floppies more niche. So unless you were working with computers when the floppies were around, you wouldn't really be familiar with them as much as the tapes, if that makes sense.
Hey, I'm old enough to remember when floppy disks were actually floppy! If you don't want to feel SUPER old don't think about how both David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter have kids as old as the Season 4 Scoobies. (SMG and Alyson Hannigan's kids are not yet old enough for Sunnydale High).

Booting up from Dos using command prompts, switching disks, putting them back in their paper sleeves and then loading another disk with the program you wanted to run; and later, yet another disc to save to. I actually always kind of missed the 5" vinyl floppies. Sure, you could fit more on 3.5" disks, and they were more compact, it just wasn't the same. I remember periodically going to this one bookstore out of town and right as you walked in, a bin full of black vinyl disks with games and programs galore. I was so disappointed the first time we went in there and there was no bin! And you couldn't carry around those 3.5 disks in your pocket without the case breaking all the time...
When Spike said what he did about Riley being a part of Maggie's betrayal he was being rude, but he didn't say anything the other Scoobies weren't considering themselves. Since they have souls, though, they weren't going to throw it in her face like that. Either way, it still surprises me that the thought didn't cross Buffy's mind, whether she believes it or not. Angelus himself and Angel leaving are still too fresh for Buffy to not at least have it cross her mind even if she doesn't believe it.

Yeah so Maggie Walsh is gone. And your instincts are good, in that she was set up to have a bigger role from here on. Actor Lindsay Crouse left the show unexpectedly. I don't know the answer, but I wonder what the original plan were for Adam.
My guess was she was originally the Big Bad brain while Adam was the muscle. Hard to guess, but I feel like there are so many ways they could have used Maggie further. So unfortunate she dropped out. I actually like the finale, but Adam was sadly a little disappointing.
@@normalgamergal I must say,for a"forced twist",it still felt pretty organic. At the time it _did_ stun me and I found it a bit weird,but I didn't know there was a practical reason behind it and I didn't even _think_ of that possibility...I just thought it was a plot twist like others we had in the past...this is IMO another indication of how good this show is...even the last-minute solutions kinda fit in the narrative;even if they might not be _the best_ thing that could happen,they still feel like _a_ thing that _could_ happen.
@@Nicamon I definitely think they steered into the skid as well as can be expected. We might be able to script doctor a better story, but they had a limited time to come up with something, and I think it works for the most part. I'm actually a fan of Season 4. It has a lot of my favorite episodes, and both the finale and the other episode I don't want to spoil are great!
I feel the Adam storyline was the only hiccup in the series. They made the best out of a bad sitch, but as I always say, the worst BTVS is still awesome.

Okay, you've finally discovered that Tara is the evil mastermind who created the Hellmouth in the first place and is pulling all the strings. Damn, you're too clever Joss Whedon. Obviously it was all part of the scheme to lure the slayer to this town... just kidding, I don't think there's a mean bone in Tara's body. As for Spike he want's Buffy dead so who needs him. I'm still not clear on how this Initiative installation is connected to our government. Is this part of the Army? Special Forces? They're called agents, they don't have military ranks. This seems to be legitimate but if so why was Walsh able to spend so much resource on a side project no one knew about? What was her end game?

US military spending has literally billions unaccounted for. Literal pallets stacked with money higher than a man have been transported to war zones and disappeared. A well funded secret government project with little to no overcite is pretty much the most believable thing in the entire Buffyverse :P
Goodbye Iowa a very average episode, but sets up the later half of S4 now we have established that Walsh was planning something very sinister with her creation Adam, and not only experimenting on the HSTs, but also the Commandos of The Initiative, as Riley is having symptoms of poisoning. Some great little comedy moments with Xander again, and of course to homage to the original Frankenstein when Adam meets the child.
Just checked IMDB and without spoiling, p 2 is in the top 3 highest scored episodes of this season, with the same score as Something Blue, and only surpassed by Hush.

Yes. Maggie was supposed to be the main villain, from what I understand. So they've had to write Adam as the main villain. It shows. As you said, he was being just really...philosophical.
From my understanding there was a whole other stpry line that was planned for Walsh, however something happened where the actress who plays Walsh had to drop the role so that is why they went the way they did.
Both Buffy S4 and Angel S1 had their arcs pretty radically changed due to cast issues. Maggie and Oz are casualties of Seth Green and Lindsay Crouse's success elsewhere, while Doyle was a victim of Glenn Quinn's personal struggles (RIP). On the bright side, without those disruptions we likely wouldn't have either Wesley joining Angel, or, more importantly, Tara.

I don't know if you're familiar with the novel Frankenstein but in that story the monster kills a child in much the same fasion as Adam does.
