"She's one of my favorite characters, even though I think she shouldn't be." Same, woman, same. Looking forward to SMG playing Faith in Buffy and ED playing Buffy in Faith.
Faith is such a fascinating character! Whole academic papers have been written about her. I like you come up with such interesting theories. That's what fans were doing when this show was on air!
You can kind of see how unhealth Faith's relationship with the Mayor is. He may have genuinely cared about her but he also wanted her reliant on him, and as a final message to her was him telling Faith that she was nothing without him
Season 4 gets unfairly put down, the quality of episodes is outstanding for most of it. Okay the big bad isn't the best but the individual parts are involving and entertaining. The creators were on top of their game. Some plot lines got hobbled but there's lots to love here. My favorite part is seeing the Mayor again, I missed him. He's still on Faith's side, looking out for her from beyond the grave. What a nice (evil) guy.
I appreciate season 4 better when I realized that it was not really about Adam like most seasons. You could say either that it wasn't really about the Big Bad, or you could say that the Big Bad wasn't Adam, but growing up and going to college pushing them apart, was really the Big Bad of the season. That was what the season was really about. And it fits what Giles says in Restless, "It's about the Journey". This season it wasn't about beating the big bad, it was about the journey of the characters.
Another thoroughly enjoyable reaction and discussion, thank you Domi. You're such a creative thinker, even when your predictions are wrong, they are fun to consider. Really looking forward to the next episode!
"you got a pair on you, I like seeing that in a woman your age"- it hurts my brain to think Kristine Sutherland was most likely younger than SMG, ED, and I are now when she filmed this. I definitely don't think of any of us as "older" women.
The 'body swap' trope often happens at least onee in fantasy and Sci-Fi series. Whether it works or not is often down to the actors' ability to play each other's role. Looking forward to seeing this.
I have to say when I originally watched this I didn't get the idea of the bodyswitch until Faith in Buffy said 5x5. As to the idea of liking Buffy and Faith I have to say that personally I love all slayers. Even if they don't get along with each other. Buffy and Faith was Buffy's second public fight with people around in the college. In harsh light of day Spike attacked Buffy. In neither event no civilians from the public joined in to help out. I guess the public is smart enough not to get into a fight in sunnydale. Regarding your comment on the Mayor trying to bring order to Sunnydale I sometimes wonder if we could have a big bad trying to get power to defend and rule Sunnydale against constant demon incursions and if the Mayor was on that road. Rupert and Ripper sounding similar in a British accent is why the nickname made sense.
@@naraiceylob IIRC, it's pretty strongly implied that a lot of the demonic activity was *because* of the Mayor. Obviously, the hellmouth pre-existed (and was the reason he founded Sunnydale in that location) but he was courting power and gathering favors. Strong hot dog guy energy trying to bring order.
Everyone says how sweet the video message the mayor leaves for Faith is, and while he does love her as a father loves their daughter, the line "I fear that with out me, your life is over..." shows how narcissistic he is, and his love is. If the roles were reversed, and Giles was leaving a message for Buffy, he would never tell her that her life was over with him dead, and no longer able to look after her.
Slayer dreams are always prophetic. There are 3 dream sequences. 1. ... Will address this in a future episode, similar to how I did with Buffy's 2 part dream in Hush. 2. Picnic with the Mayor, Faith says "it's going to rain soon", then Buffy shows up and kills the Mayor with Faith's knife (just like actually happened). This tells us 2 things, 1, this dream first happened before Graduation day, other wise it wouldn't be prophetic. and 2, Faith has seen these dreams on repeat (see #3.) 3. It is raining (just as Faith predicted it would be in Dream #2), hence we know these dreams are on loop in Faith's head, until she wakes up. They mayor in his message to Faith says that with out him to look after her, her life is over (ie dead) and she falls into a grave symbolizing her life being over without the Mayor. Then Buffy falls into the grave and Faith comes out, this is prophesying the body swap. Climbing out of the grave may also symbolize Faith waking from her coma, so it is possible this is the only part of her dream sequence that wasn't running on a loop. Even if this last part is true, it still 100% symbolizes the body swap, but a thing can symbolize 2 things at once so both elements can be true.
I love your reactions Domi, one can tell that you are actually enjoying the show and have honest reactions unlike some that are in it just to be nitpicking it …… im glad i get t to rewatch the show with you …
See, I read Faith at this point of being a classic abuser. Her trauma & her problems are justification for all of her actions. People's negativity towards her actions are an assault on her. Everything she constructs in her head absolves her for her actions while holding everyone else accountable if they do not fall in line with her wishes. She DOES see herself as the bad guy, but it is everyone else's fault. They make her do it. She does not have to face her guilt or self hatred so long as she can blame them. Just as in real life, trauma does not justify becoming an abuser. And just like in real life, it takes recognising this to begin recovery.
Oh, and there ARE no innocent people. Faith is correct in this. Believing otherwise is a disaster. Her problem is thinking that a lack of innocence is the same as being bad. Nobody is perfect. That's okay. She doesn't need to be perfect. Buffy is not perfect. Faith holding herself and everyone else to an impossible standard is part of her problem. She doesn't need to be innocent to be worthy of love or forgiveness or redemption.
I'm glad that you're belatedly coming around to the Mayor's feelings for Faith. Although your guesses here were wrong I think you show a lot of imagination (more than the show's writers) as with Wolfram & Hart. Keep on guessing, maybe you'll become a script writer some day.
To be fair, when your Big Bad decides she doesn't want to be in the show after all and quits halfway through the seaon, that's going to affect your main season arc badly.

Faith is my absolute favorite character and I make no apologies. I love her and her complex grayness. I don't think I've ever seen her as evil. I see her more as a victim who fucked up, and was dealt a crappy hand. Girl just needs therapy.
Granted, I don't think Faith is inherently evil, but the girl made choices. As Willow said, Faith had friends like Buffy who were willing to help her, and she turned away from that help. Victims of evil deeds do not justify evil deeds.
"Maybe this is why we're able to like Faith- because we know that Buffy really wants to like her and I think deep down she feels so betrayed and she cares so much about Faith and that's why she hates her so much right now is because she actually really had a good relationship with her ad now it's all gone downhill." Wow I think you've really figured out why Faith remains a well loved character despite being a huge problem for Buffy :(
So, when Faith is ranting to Joyce, it sounded a lot like Faith wasn't just calling out Buffy for abandoning her mom. Faith says, "She was over US a long time ago!" Honestly, listening to that rant, Faith feels a LOT like a jilted lover, which totally plays into my head-canon that Buffy and Faith are two halves of a greater whole, yin and yang, light and dark, sweet and sour, etc. I felt so happy when you were guessing as to who was going to be the focus of this episode. We don't need Riley or Adam, we've got Buffy's REAL Endgame Ship (TM) to deal with over here! ~_^
Faith has killed at least 3 people, assulted several people, sexual assaulted Xander and tried to kill Joyce. This isn't even including what she does in the next episode. Faith is definitely a bad guy and jail is exactly what she deserves.
Eliza Dushku is like a jolt of electricity anytime Faith appears, isn't she? What a force she was on this show.
