High is the way to go💯👍❤️ I'm so old, the first few times I saw this was on a black and white tv set. Then my uncle bought a color set, so the next time it played we went over to watch it. The first thirty minutes, everybody kept trying to fix the set because they thought the color controls had gone out on it... 😏 The "cyclone" is my favorite segment. Fascinating how they created that effect, especially because at that point there didn't exist any film footage of a real tornado, and not really many good photos either. My favorite character is the Wicked Witch. Margaret Hamilton really pulled out all the stops for her performance.💚

So my baby sister was OBSESSED with this movie when we were kids to the point we wore out the tape from watching it EVERY NIGHT for a long time. Wasn't until she stepped on a bee while watching one summer that we FINALLY moved to another movie but I always said she was acting like Dorothy with the pigs on her overreaction to a bee sting. I can still quote this movie word for word picking up from anywhere in the movie.
"I can see the peacock in the background! I don't know why anyone ever thought-" Lowkey appreciate the reference to that urban legend. I used to be super into urban legends like that. And tasteful of you not to outright *say* it.
This movie has a special place in my heart, mostly because when I was 4-5 I played a munchkin at the college my mom & nana worked at; that college also had my daycare center. So the college theater club got our parents permission to participate in their Wizard of Oz play. It’s was so much fun, we got to sing and dance and help make our costumes; when the play was over we got to watch the rest while snacking on stuff from the bake sale.
I know loads of old films have things happen that seem wild now due to health and safety laws but the Wizard of Oz seems to be one of the worst - the original tin man ending up in an iron lung, his replacement getting an eye infection from the 'safer' facepaint that he ended up needing surgery for, the wicked witch getting terrible burns after a trapdoor malfunctioned and her copper face paint caught fire, her stunt double getting terribly injured after the smoke device for the skywriting scene blew up, all of the actors in facepaint not being able to eat and only drink through straws as the paint was toxic and a 16 year old Judy Garland forced to wear a corset and given tobacco and pills to reduce her appetite so she looked more like a 10 year old. It's wild to think it all happened on one set.
@@REALBeezle Yeah I forgot that until they said it in their commentary. The smoke device that exploded injuring the stunt double was also coated in asbestos
I was actually at a party recently where someone projected Wizard of Oz on a big screen while playing PINK-FLOYD: Dark Side of the Moon at the same time! 😆 It really does flow with the film! I definitely felt like a second-hand stoner just watching it tho, lol.
this is easily in my top 5 movies of all time, i rewatch it multiple times a year, its just such a comfort watch for me and i especially love falling asleep to it, there’s something so comforting about it for me
Wizard of Oz was my favourite movie as a kid. My parents' bedroom wall was covered in about a million stickfigure drawings I made that roughly looked the same as the last that I made of Dorothy and Toto and I insisted needed a prime spot above their bed.
They had a double for Dorothy done up in sepia and as she pulls back out of shot opening the door, Judy Garland in color steps forward into the color shot of Oz.
I have an aunt named Deanne, one day when my cousins were really little they were watching the wizard of oz when Dorothy was yelling Auntie Em Auntie Em they thought she was yelling Aunt Deanne Aunt Deanne. It gave us quite a laugh. Their mother is also named Dorothy but she usually goes by Dot. Definitely added this movie to my list of movies to watch while high. I had kind of a rough day in physical therapy today (having issues with balance and vertigo) felt pretty nauseous afterwards but this made me feel better, especially when the water hit Rizzo. I actually had to rewind it because I was laughing so hard the first time, so thanks for that guys! You guys seem like a blast to get high with. P.S. If you want to hear a gorgeous edition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow as well as what a wonderful world, look up Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s (really hope I spelled that right) cover. It played at my cousin’s wedding as his wife walked down the aisle and it was insanely beautiful. Edited to add: Just watching Scarecrow, Tin Man’s, and the cowardly lion’s choreography is enough to give me a dizzy spell, can’t imagine having to do it with a shit ton of makeup as well as an uncomfortable costume on.
Oh my gosh, the auntie Em and aunt Deanne mixup is iconic! Also, we’re so glad we can help you feel better in anyway even if it’s at the expense of Rizzo being dry 😂 And yes, IZs somewhere over the rainbow mashup is iconic we’ve been listening to it since high school 🙌🌈
All day yesterday I thought it was Friday and was really sad thinking you didn't post. Also I had to watch The Wizard of Oz in school and absolutely hated it. I've never seen Wicked and only know the songs Popular, Defying Gravity, and The Wizard and I. I recently read the Wicked book and felt like I was dying and getting dumber by the minute. However I am still so excited to see Wicked tomorrow and thrilled you both are watching the Wizard of Oz (it's just not my kind of movie). Maybe you both can change my mind into enjoying this movie a little more :).
as a kid i used to watch the wizard of oz religiously at least once a week (until the sad sad day that the dvd gave up and said 'no more') hehe love you guys! and love this movie more than i love myself!!!!!!!! mwah
16:35 because theres an edited video thats gone around alleging to be the original footage where it fully is like a hanging silhouette. But that's the edited one. And the horse is jello powder
I love the cosplays! you 2 look amazing! Margret Hamilton ended up burned by the pyrotechnics and the green paint was toxic/ harmful to her skin. this movie's fun - I was in 2 productions of this as a play- one was at camp and our bunk was the tornado and in high school we did an abridged version which I stage managed it was soo much fun! in the original book there were 4 witches- one for each direction and Glinda was the good witch of the south and the slippers were silver( it was changed to red for the movie). when you rewatch this as an adult you realize that Glinda was awful she used Dorothy for her own means to get rid of the witch, she is the one who makes the witch of the west angry and makes Dorothy a target by giving her the shoes and doesn't give Dorothy any guidance and then has the audacity ti teal her she could've gone home when ever she wanted by clicking her heals! in the original book the tin man is a tin woodman who was a woodsman -the witch cursed his axe so he kept cutting off limbs instead of trees, each time he lost a body part he replaced it with tin and eventually became fully tin.
Even as a kid I was disturbed that people were singing and dancing around someone’s dead body and Glinda straight up grave robbing the witch’s ruby slippers. Glinda was straight messy for creating the beef and orchestrating the wicked witch’s murder through Dorothy.
Yeah I know we’re not supposed to “overthink” these types of movies but sometimes characters like Glinda rub me the wrong way. lol like damn lady, why you gotta throw me into the middle of your drama!?
Ray Bolger was supposed to play the Tin Man, but he thought his physicality would work better for the Scarecrow. When Buddy Ebsen, who was originally supposed to play the Scarecrow, switched to the Tin Man, he was hospitalized due to the makeup (which was changed for Jack Haley).
I've never actually finished this movie. I started watching it once - when I was 5 - and it got to the part where the witches legs (with the red slippers, and striped socks) and I burst into tears, and then we watched Peppa Pig until I went to bed that night. And for some reason I've never gone back to finish the movie.
Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow) proving that, indeed, he had no bones!: ua-cam.com/video/8hpiaPG2yZk/v-deo.html The original casting for the Tin Man was Buddy Ebsen, aka Jed Clampet from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and later "Barnaby Jones". But the makeup for the character landed Ebsn in the hospital, so the makeup was refined and part went to Jack Haley (who is lovely). And if you're wondering how Ebsen might have been, see for yourself: ua-cam.com/video/dkVtSvNod6g/v-deo.html (That's his sister, Vilma, dancing with him. The lady enjoying the performance is immortal dancer Eleanor Powell, and it took a lot courage to basically be the opening number for her: ua-cam.com/video/INb9V-FXdGE/v-deo.html - which isn't even her at her best!),
Can't wait for Tuesday 😍😍 this was my uncles favourite film he literally knew every single line and he adored Judy Garland he passed away in 2017 and Over the rainbow was played at his funeral I'd love to believe he's with Judy and Terry the dog in heaven 💔🙏😇🌈🌈
Alright im ready to confess I've never watched this movie and unless someone makes me I don't plan to but I am excited to see wicked tomorrow and I love yall so this was great Rizzo you should have edited in you melting when benji got you. Also I am a friend of Dorothys :)
Omg how did I never notice it was the same guy as the wizard & guard?! Makes sense that he's keeping everyone away from himself 😂 If you think the munchkins are nightmare fuel, wait til you see Return to Oz 👀
I just watched Wicked... I needed A TOWEL FOR MY TEARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS you canno't believe how much I was sobbing in the movie theater lol and I clapped so hard I was the only one excited lol
Can’t wait to see the wicked movie! Me and a lot of my friends from theater are going to see it after our White Christmas rehearsal next week!Me and my cousins used to go on walks with our grandmother and great grandmother & we’d do the off to see the wizard wall that they did in the movie & sing the song. It’s one of my fav memories growing up. I love this movie! It’s so good! . It’s sad about what the actors & actresses went through bts. Also y’all nailed the ahahhahhhhhh 👏🏻 Amazing singing boys.😂 Love y’alls videos! You guys do an amazing job! ❤
This has always been one of my favorite movies since I was a little girl, I also LOVE Wicked, saw the movie last night and it was perfect, can't wait for part two.
I think the funniest* part about all the conspiracies about someone hanging in the rafters and such is that you didn't even NEED any wild theories to make the movie scary.. there was already enough real life horror going on bts
So the tornado in created using several cool techniques: 1 Muslin cloth: A 35-foot muslin stocking was wrapped around chicken wire to make the tornado’s shape. 2 Gantry: A steel gantry was used to attach the top of the tornado and suspend it above the stage. 3 Rod: A rod at the bottom moved opposite the gantry to make the tornado snake around. 4 Compressed air: Hoses sprayed Fuller’s Earth from the top and bottom to create dust and debris. 5 Wind fans: Fans made it look like the tornado was throwing things around. 6 Smoke: Smoke added to the effect of things being thrown around. 7 Glass panels: Panels with gray cotton balls created a mammatus cloud effect. 8 Miniatures: A model of Dorothy’s house was used for some scenes. 9 Rear projection: Footage of the tornado was projected behind the actors Thank you classic film studies.
Family favorite. We had to wait for the once a year showing when I was a kid. I am so excited for wicked! Are you guys going to see it? Or are you going to wait and watch it for us????
I know a lot about this movie they almost deleted the Over the Rainbow song but thank god they did not because of how much impactful it would become. And they almost got 1930s child star Shirley Twmple to play Dorothy but lots of issues and the fact she doesn’t really have the right vocals. So they leaned on judy garland. They kept giving her drugs to lose some weight and that addiction came to grow with her until her later years. Poor Judy. They used a very long Muslim stocking to make the tornado. And the shot of the house are miniature replicas to make the Muslim stocking even longer. And they blew smoke around as well. The technicolor scene was in color, they just had sepia walls, a sepia colored dorothy stunt double and there you go. They almost had a pretty looking wicked witch played by Gale Sondergaard because they were so inspired by the success of Disney’s snow white in 1937. But they decided to have an ugly witch and they thought Sondergaard wouldn’t like that and she agreed cause she was not about to make herself ugly for that. So it was Margaret Hamilton who became the iconic character that influenced witches forever. But she was very nice behind the scenes, especially with Judy Garland. Poor Margaret Hamilton had her broom and hat on fire when she left munchkinland. Second degree on her face and third on her hands. That poor woman. Ray Bolger was originally the tin man but wanted to be the scarecrow so he could dance since he was a very good dancer as we can see. Ray Bolger also had marks on his face from the scarecrow mask. Like Margaret Hamilton whose makeup was green copper so it was hard to take it off completely for over a year. Jack Haley did a good job as the thin man. Before him was actor Buddy Ebsen, who was originally the scarecrow but switched with Ray Bolger (our scarecrow) but Buddy Ebsen had his lungs coated with the aluminum powder from the makeup. So he was hospitalized and they decided to hire Jack Haley. However he got an eye infection but it didn’t stopped him from being in this movie. the lion suit Bert Lahr wore was actual lion fur so it stunk and was unbarely hot. And because many lights were on in the set (making some black outs in the city) poor Bert Lahr ended up sweating Everytime they ended the shooting they did projection on the crystal ball they used asbestos for snow Yeah. but nobody knew about the dangers of using it in the 1930s they used jello for the horse changing Colors 26:26 that was not Margaret Hamilton making that smoke arc. that was her stunt double Betty Danko. Because of the explosion that burned her in munchkin land, Hamilton refused any scenes involving fire. Her son was a toddler so she was not about to risk her life over a stunt. so once Betty danko was lifted above the studio, the smoking pipe dressed like a broom exploded so she had to hang on it until she was lowered to safety with burned and scarred legs. She recovered tho. the wizard throne room kept catching on fire on set 😂 the weapons disappeared in a deleted scene one of the flying monkeys in that scene fell down In the haunted Forrest because they were hung by wires tied to pianos there was a deleted scene where Dorothy sang a reprise of over the rainbow while crying alone locked in the witch’s castle. But it was considered too sad because of Judy Garland’s emotional crying.
my dads favorite part of the movie is also when the lion jumps out of the window 😂, I also would love if you guys saw The Wiz at somepoint in the future!
Sooo you guys watched Wicked a? 😂 is Johnny Bailey there or it's like heartstopper 😂. I am trying to convince a friend to come with me for the plot... but if the plot is not there... 😂

I love to know that I wasn’t the only one obsessed with this is a kid but it’s funny how much my obsession pales in comparison 😂
@PinkPopcast Every. Night. For like 2 years. 🤣
There’s some surprisingly funny jokes mixed with all the wild musical numbers
😄
"I can see the peacock in the background! I don't know why anyone ever thought-" Lowkey appreciate the reference to that urban legend. I used to be super into urban legends like that. And tasteful of you not to outright *say* it.
🙆🏽♂️🙆🏽♂️🙆🏽♂️
This movie has a special place in my heart, mostly because when I was 4-5 I played a munchkin at the college my mom & nana worked at; that college also had my daycare center. So the college theater club got our parents permission to participate in their Wizard of Oz play. It’s was so much fun, we got to sing and dance and help make our costumes; when the play was over we got to watch the rest while snacking on stuff from the bake sale.
Amazing hahah
You need to watch the sequel, Return to Oz, it's so twisted Hilarious both!!
I’ve never seen that one!
Talk about nightmare fuel
Yes, came here to check this had been recommended! Except maybe don't watch it while high, it's already sooooo disturbing!
@@mindya5288 very good point!!!
I love the levels of Rizzo’s drying face paint lol
😂😂
Yeah I feel like even back then that was BAD!
and that's not even mentioning the asbestos they used for snow in the poppy scene 😭
It really does flow with the film! I definitely felt like a second-hand stoner just watching it tho, lol.
One day I’ll do that hahaha
this is easily in my top 5 movies of all time, i rewatch it multiple times a year, its just such a comfort watch for me and i especially love falling asleep to it, there’s something so comforting about it for me
Super lonely living in the middle of nowhere in Norway. Only American in town lol. Thanks y'all for being my movie buddies ❤
Oh my gosh, the only American in town!? We’re here for you 🙌
Wizard of Oz was my favourite movie as a kid. My parents' bedroom wall was covered in about a million stickfigure drawings I made that roughly looked the same as the last that I made of Dorothy and Toto and I insisted needed a prime spot above their bed.
Awwee that’s so cute 😊😊
Not Benji catching strays from that broom the whole time! 😂😂😂
Actually my broom kept catching strays from his face so…
I LAUGHED SO HARD WHEN YOU THREW THE WATER ON HIS FACE!! HAHAHAHAHA 😂😂😂😂
😅
Your friendship is simply golden! 😊 Also, i laughed so much i hope y'all do more old movies!
Aww thank you! We’d love to!
this was posted with perfect timing to my lunch break 🤩🙏
PERIODT 🙌
@@PinkPopcastthank you for my daily lunch entertainment 🫶🫶
Same! Hahaha eating my lunch right now.
They had a double for Dorothy done up in sepia and as she pulls back out of shot opening the door, Judy Garland in color steps forward into the color shot of Oz.
Oh yeah! It’s done so well!!!
Yessss, this is by far the best reaction (being in costume, getting high and one of my all time favorite movies✨)
@@brendabravo137 we had SO much fun!!!
Also, we’re so glad we can help you feel better in anyway even if it’s at the expense of Rizzo being dry 😂
And yes, IZs somewhere over the rainbow mashup is iconic we’ve been listening to it since high school 🙌🌈
The Lion does brave things all the way although he's afraid; the Scarecrow comes up with the plans; the Tin Man worries about everyone.
Oh wow….. that’s so true and adorable 🥺
PLEASE get high and react to The Wiz!!! People hardly ever acknowledge that version but it’s mg favorite and truly worth watching!!
We definitely will watch that film at some point!
😂😂😂 you and Rizzo are in the same boat about the Wizard of Oz so this might not change your mind but maybe you’ll feel less alone in that opinion lol
"We're off-" 🤣 Damn copyright haha!
🤣🪦
as a kid i used to watch the wizard of oz religiously at least once a week (until the sad sad day that the dvd gave up and said 'no more') hehe love you guys! and love this movie more than i love myself!!!!!!!! mwah
Omg not the dvd giving out!! I totally get it. I love this movie too! -Benji
28:52 perfection 😂😂😂
Unplanned but something deep in my high brain knew to play along - even though I was hoping it wasn’t me actually getting wet 😂
yall have to do the Wiz too!!
Recommended annual Thanksgiving Watch
One day!!!
Yikes!!!
5:56 "It's a twister! IT'S A TWISTER!!!"
🐎🐎🐎💨: "Dude, you ain't gotta tell us twice!!!"
you both look soo good! the broom the wand, luv how yall have sm fun with it💗💚
Thank you 😁😁
I played Aunt Em in my last high school theater production Wizard of Oz so this movie will always have a special place in my heart
Congratulations 🙌🙌
😬
I saw Wicked last night. It was great. Everyone clapped at the end. ❤❤❤ 👍🏾👍🏾
We did too!!! 👏🏽
@@PinkPopcast wasn't Arianna hilarious. Cynthia made me cry a couple times. I applauded for popular and defying gravity. A few people did also. 😁
I’ve never clicked so friggin fast once I saw that Rizzo’s face was green I had to watch this. How UA-cam hide this from me for like half an hour?
😂😂 glad they finally showed you!
I've never actually finished this movie. I started watching it once - when I was 5 - and it got to the part where the witches legs (with the red slippers, and striped socks) and I burst into tears, and then we watched Peppa Pig until I went to bed that night. And for some reason I've never gone back to finish the movie.
Oh my god no! You were traumatized 😂😭
Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow) proving that, indeed, he had no bones!: ua-cam.com/video/8hpiaPG2yZk/v-deo.html
The original casting for the Tin Man was Buddy Ebsen, aka Jed Clampet from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and later "Barnaby Jones". The lady enjoying the performance is immortal dancer Eleanor Powell, and it took a lot courage to basically be the opening number for her: ua-cam.com/video/INb9V-FXdGE/v-deo.html - which isn't even her at her best!),
🙌🏽
I’d love to see y’all watch The Wiz & Muppets of Oz!
Haha we definitely considered both of those and will revisit some time in the future!
Also: that water went FULLY into Rizzo’s mouth and I was dead 🤣🤣
😑
Did y'all also grab the pink and green hand mirror? I went to Targét and went crazy on the Wicked merch🤣🤣🤣🤣
Benji has bought SO MUCH MERCH!
Wild that you're speeding up the already-sped-up Munchkin voices.
Gotta bypass them copyright laws 🤷🏽♂️
Can't wait for Tuesday 😍😍 this was my uncles favourite film he literally knew every single line and he adored Judy Garland he passed away in 2017 and Over the rainbow was played at his funeral I'd love to believe he's with Judy and Terry the dog in heaven 💔🙏😇🌈🌈
Omg we’re so sorry for you’re loss! That’s absolutely a beautiful sent off and sentiment🥰🥰🌈🌈
@PinkPopcast ❤️❤️❤️
You guys are hilarious
Growing up I would fast forward or walk away or change the channel during cheer up Charlie lmao
ITS SO LAME! Benji LOVES musicals and even HE hates that song 😭
Alright im ready to confess I've never watched this movie and unless someone makes me I don't plan to but I am excited to see wicked tomorrow and I love yall so this was great Rizzo you should have edited in you melting when benji got you. Also I am a friend of Dorothys :)
Honestly? As a lifelong “hater” of this film, I think it’s worth at least ONE official watch 😇
Omg how did I never notice it was the same guy as the wizard & guard?! Makes sense that he's keeping everyone away from himself 😂
If you think the munchkins are nightmare fuel, wait til you see Return to Oz 👀
Hey we’re all noticing for the first time!
I just watched Wicked... I needed A TOWEL FOR MY TEARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS you canno't believe how much I was sobbing in the movie theater lol and I clapped so hard I was the only one excited lol
Rizzo and I cried too! Not a ton, but it definitely hit
@@PinkPopcast Benjiiiiii the falling scene I mean.... omg 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I forgot you guys got high until I saw the title😅
As always you guys are always on point with your costumes! I love it! 😂👏
Haha, it took a while to get them right!
@ I bet and they came out great! Also I have the same broom I used for my witch costume this year for Halloween 😂
The outfits are eating 🩷💚
Thanks! 🙌🙌
This has always been one of my favorite movies since I was a little girl, I also LOVE Wicked, saw the movie last night and it was perfect, can't wait for part two.
Ah ahh ahaaaaaahhhhhh!!! Loved this!
YAY! 🙌🏽
I think the funniest* part about all the conspiracies about someone hanging in the rafters and such is that you didn't even NEED any wild theories to make the movie scary.. there was already enough real life horror going on bts
Right!? Every official bts story I read is horrific!!!
Guys this may be your magnum opus. The amount of times I cackled
😂😂
So the tornado in created using several cool techniques:
1 Muslin cloth: A 35-foot muslin stocking was wrapped around chicken wire to make the tornado’s shape.
9 Rear projection: Footage of the tornado was projected behind the actors
Thank you classic film studies.
girl i watched this in theatre recently and i didnt realize how funny it was
I bet it’s a fun theater experience!!!
Family favorite. We had to wait for the once a year showing when I was a kid. I am so excited for wicked! Are you guys going to see it? Or are you going to wait and watch it for us????
We’ve seen it already BUT we will probably do a video reaction to the first movie when the second part comes out next year!
Note that the doorman, the coachman, the wizard, the guard, and Professor Marvel, are all played by Frank Morgan.
🤯
I know a lot about this movie
they almost deleted the Over the Rainbow song but thank god they did not because of how much impactful it would become.
And because many lights were on in the set (making some black outs in the city) poor Bert Lahr ended up sweating Everytime they ended the shooting
they did projection on the crystal ball
they used asbestos for snow Yeah. but nobody knew about the dangers of using it in the 1930s
they used jello for the horse changing Colors
26:26 that was not Margaret Hamilton making that smoke arc. that was her stunt double Betty Danko. She recovered tho.
the wizard throne room kept catching on fire on set 😂
the weapons disappeared in a deleted scene
one of the flying monkeys in that scene fell down In the haunted Forrest because they were hung by wires tied to pianos
there was a deleted scene where Dorothy sang a reprise of over the rainbow while crying alone locked in the witch’s castle. But it was considered too sad because of Judy Garland’s emotional crying.
Damn I would have LOVED a sad reprise 😢
my dads favorite part of the movie is also when the lion jumps out of the window 😂, I also would love if you guys saw The Wiz at somepoint in the future!
I recently watched Pearl for the first time and it's wild how much that movie takes a ton of inspiration/homage/twists on the Wizard of Oz.
Yepp!
Sooo you guys watched Wicked a? 😂 is Johnny Bailey there or it's like heartstopper 😂. I am trying to convince a friend to come with me for the plot... but if the plot is not there... 😂
Oh no he’s DEFINITELY in it!!! Yall will have a blast!!!
