A bit of o-ring grease, or a silicone based grease, will help your o-rings slide and not get scuffed during assy. Just makes the chances better for a successful rebuild!
Good work Steve. You were pretty lucky on the pump. I had a leak in my 84 F250 (in-line 6...stick shift) and had to borrow a vehicle to drive off-base into town to go to Advance Auto to get a rebuilt pump and rent their pulley puller. The whole procedure took mega hours but I got the old pump off and new one on and took the pulley back and got my deposit. The very next day, the pump leaked. I was furious! I drove all the way in town in my leaking truck, told them about it, and they gave me another rebuilt pump and the pulley puller and I did everything out in the parking lot in 30-45 minutes (Not as long as my very first time doing it; now I was a pro 😀). What a nightmare!. The 1st rebuilt pump I bought from Advance Auto had a teeny-tiny pinhole in the back right at the spot where the plastic snipped off from an assembly line mold that it was attached to. You couldn't see the pinhole with naked eye. My pump was not like yours where the reservoir snapped to the back of the pump, it was one solid unit. So that meant taking the entire pump w/ reservoir off and you can imagine the headache that was. Sorry for long comment. Your video triggered that entire unsavory experience. So when I saw your hose, I said, replace it man. I am a serious fix my own stuff backyard mechanic (hahaha). Good job. Later 👍🏽.
I've had some experiences like that, the second round always goes faster though LOL. I'm with you on fixing my own stuff. If I can fix it myself I will.
@@SteveStoltz Yes, and I always buy spark plugs locally. By mail, there's no recourse if they break or malfunction. It's a wear-part you can't afford to wait for.
It’s interesting how Ford designed the reservoir to be a press fit, and uses just one o-ring for it to seal. Awesome job fixing it. Also I’ve never even heard of a power steering cooler before. I didn’t even know power steering fluid could get that hot.🤣
The fluid can get pretty warm when hauling going off road etc, In my case though its extreme overkill since I mostly just drive back and forth down the highway to town lol.
Bought a 93 f-150 last November from the junkyard, been working at the issues it has, this is one as well. I’ve never seen how that reservoir was attached, seems a sketchy engineered to fail clusterfuckery.
Seafoam makes a trans/power steering flush. Use some of that BEFORE you put in a new pump. Then flush out the old fluid. THEN use some synthetic trans fluid ( I use Valvoline dex merc high milage synthetic). doing those things will help with the Ford pump wine.
My steering was leaking around the shaft so I put a new seal in it, but spent the next two months trying to get that big oring around the reservoir to seal!
Hopefully I wont have any issues with it, I'll know once i drive it for a while and get it heated up. The press fit reservoir doesn't seem like the most reliable design to me.
Hey, Mr.Stoltz. Great video, I as however curious you said it was a power steering pump.. is that a reason the power steering fluid is red? I was just curious. My 86 f250 with a 460 has this same leak currently.

1995 Ford F-150 whiney power steering. 300 4.9 lt. Replace hydraulic lines, steering box, pulley, tensor pully, serpentine belt, and have tried 4 remanufactured power steering pumps. I bought a vacuum bleeder kit for my pump. Cannot get whining out of steering. I use type F atf per my manual. I am just trying to find someone with answers. Thanks for any reply.
Unfortunately about the only option unless you can find a NOS pump, is to upgrade to the Saginaw pump that was used in the Econoline vans. You need the bracket and pump from the donor van due to the difference in pump spacing. This is the plan I have for mine, I have the parts just haven't gotten to it yet. I've found that the remanufactured pumps are basically just cleaned and resealed. To my knowledge, there are no company's making brand new ones.

Thank you sir, perfect timing! How much was that hose? I glanced at oreillys website and it looked to be anywhere from 10 to 60 bucks.
Cool lol. The hose was about 25 and the rebuild kit was 13 at my local Carquest, rock auto has them cheaper though if you don't mind the wait. The crows foot flare wrench definitely made it easier.
Steve Stoltz definitely getting some crows feet fittings, I had a little kit I was eyeing and you sealed the deal, I’ll be buying it soon! I picked up my gates p/s rebuild kit from rock auto I think for $8 so I bought two of them. While I’m replacing the hose I’ll use the O-rings that came with it like you did. I replaced my gearbox, steering pump and both hoses and got it all together and have this same leak…. So I need to get a new hose I guess, the one I got was from oreilys

Sucks reading this. I put a new rebuilt one on last year then parked it. Tomorrow I have to find the leak and yeah changing it was a pain

I put a new pump on mine last year and let it sit in grass. It's empty now so I'm hoping it's not the pump again

It is a power steering pump, but it uses transmission fluid. Its all basically red hydraulic fluid.

It's a 4.9 inline 6 with a 5 speed. I haven't made a walk around video just showing the truck, not a bad idea though 🤔
