  • A needlessly in-depth look at the slice of life/cute girls doing cute things trend from the early 2010s.
Also I didn't realise until I was editing the video, but I was mispronouncing "Uno Tsunehiro" as "Uno Tsushino" for some reason.

The genre never died; it just fell from its peak where it consistently delivered multiple shows per season. The currently airing Pon no Michi fits right in with the shows airing at the height of the trend.

....and then almost a year later Bocchi The Rock appeared, and became the Great Hit of 2022.

I hope these videos pick up traction as there is lots of love and care put into them and it genuinely hurts to watch that effort not get noticed

Just found your channel after UA-cam recommended it to me. It was the BTR video. I think it's interesting you made this video 1 year prior to BTR airing. I wonder if it will change your mind or perspective. Maybe the fall and rise of slice of life.

I tend to really love Slice-of-Life anime for two reasons. (1) Usually they’re just something warm and comfy to put on in the background and (2) I enjoy SoL anime that explore certain professions or aspects of people’s lives.
My favorite SoL’s of all time are Shirobako and Sakura Quest (both made by PA Works) because they explore adult life in a very relatable way while also still being fun. I also really love SoL anime like Hyouka for masterfully framing typical high school life in a very fantastical way.
Ironically I never really caught onto the K-On trend. I watched 18 episodes and just lost interest. And I don’t really know why cause, objectively, I don’t think it’s bad. It’s just no the “comfort” I’m looking for I guess.
In the early 2000s it was a lot of moe and in the current 2010-20s it’s Isekais. Makes me wonder what Anime genre is going to be “milked” next. I’m guessing Shounen, honestly, cause we’ve got a lot of bangers in the last 5 years.

There is a specific kei genre that is specifically pure slice of life CGDCT anime, called the Kirara-kei named after the magazine that owned and serialized the manga of K-ON, Kinmoza, Yuyushiki, Gochiusa, Bocchi The Rock, Hidamari Sketch, Yuru Camp, New Game, A-Channel, Madoka Magica, Gakkou Gurashi, Slow Loop, Slow Start, Ochikobore Fruit Tart, etc. a line of Magazine called Manga Time Kirara and had five other sister magazines of the same name, and these magazine specializes and dominates the CGDCT genre. Kirara-kei is anime that is all cgdct, no real story going on, no real drama, very less to absolute 0 male characters(Yuyushiki has absolutely 0 males), all moe and with some character developements in them.

A lot of Isekai are basically Slice of Life show in a fantasy setting, what baffles me if how often compare these genres without noticing that.

Overall, an interesting video. Is there any articles or videos talking more about the great narrative?

The idea of a grand narrative is something heavily featured in philosophy the man he mentioned Jean-François Lyotard wrote several works approaching it from different angles such as the book also mentioned La condition postmoderne: rapport sur le savior or as it's known in English The postmodern condition: A report on knowledge, other prominent works that are not super confusing reads that Lyotard published are The Inhuman and Mainmisme. Note all his works focuses on postmodernism in various forms and how it impacts everything from language, psychology, philosophy and aesthetics. He was inspired by many famous philosophers and writers everything from Kant to Wittengenstein. However his philosophical theory of grand narrative and local narrative are not without critism. Examples of people who has been critical of his works are John Stephens and Robyn McCallum who are both fanstastic academics as well if you are interested in that you should read their co-authored title called Retelling stories, framing culture: Traditional story and metanarratives in childrens litterature. J.W Bertens International postmodernism is also a work that is a great read that is criticical of Lyotard. However in the world of philosophy we tend to have an intellectual bias towards certain arguements so all of the works and papers suggested could just be a bunch of hogwash to you but appeal to someone else such is the nature of the subject.

I guess SoL anime will rise again because of the success of BtR.

This is the second time I have heard of the book Database Animals through anitubers; read the introduction and it just didn't click with me. Maybe I should pick it up again.

The book itself is pretty dense with post-modern theory that honestly probably isn't really necessary to understand. I'd recommending reading this article by Azuma that covers the primary argument of the book.

I enjoy anime with very low amount male characters, and none of them have any main roles, barely ever interacts with the girls. With Gochiusa being not just my favorite moe Slice of Life anime and manga, but also my favorite anime and manga of all time

Oh, now I have another reason to hate the Isekai boom. I mean I like Re Zero, Youjo Senki, Overlord, and a few others, but I feel the genre is mostly full of... not good stuff. And it gets worse in manga, the anime production companies act as an imperfect gate against bad isekai, you won't believe the garbage you see in manga because many authors think "not generic or cliche" actually means good. But I always though "eh, if there are 40 anime released this season, 30 of them isekai, and there is only a 30% chance any of those isekai are any good, as long as I have 7 good anime to watch this season, I'm a happy guy and can just ignore the bad shows." Now I'm mad the isekai boom threatens slice of life and the timing of slice of life declining does line up with the isekai boom. Ironically, I actually liked Sword Art Online, but I hate what it done to the industry.
