- "It's all the same thing" is something I hear thrown around a lot when discussing slice of life anime, which couldn't be any less true. So, I decided to do the only logical thing and make a video on it! Here are the misconception(s) of slice of life in anime.

Holy shit when you were talking about K-On in the beginning and the piano music came on that I believe is U&I, I immediately completely lost it. Fuck, that goddamn show has so much power over my emotions.
Late reply but yo, me too. K-On! was honestly the anime that got me so into anime in general; plus I watched it through with a close friend so the show holds a lot of sentimental value for me. Past that though, it may be summarized by some as cute girls doing cute things but it honestly is just so uplifting and heartwarming to see the pure friendship between the five grow ever so closer with each episode.
KyoAni did such a wonderful job animating it as well, especially when it came to the movie. I didn't expect them ending it with them performing Tenshi ni Fureta yo!, giving the movie purpose other than just the girls having fun misadventures in London. The trip heavily inspired Yui and everyone to come up with a graduation gift for Azusa, leading to writing the song in the first place. Gave some really great background to how exactly the song was created, making the final performance in both the movie and show all the more powerful and touching.
i wanted to cry as soon as i heard the piano
Great video Russ, Slice of Life is also my favorite genre.
I love the feeling of relaxation that shows like K-On! and the recent Flying Witch offer and I also love the meaninful/thematically deep stories you can find in Slice of Life like Mushishi and Haibane Renmei.
My favourite Slice of Life Anime is Higurashi
+StrandGC Really peaceful and tranquil stuff
Mine is Corpse Party :D
+AnimeRuss Hey sorry if I'm bothering you but do you know anything about another season of suzumiya haruhi? That anime is feaking amazing and I read all of the Light Novel, but did they have plan to make another season or not?
+StrandGC There is a lot of slicing of lives in Higurashi, like with Rena's machete.
haha, same
I may be biased to Sound of the Sky, but I fully acknowledge K-ON! as the greatest slice of life ever made.
Wolf Children is amazing. Nuff' said.
Btw, does Seitokai Yakuindomo count as Slice of Life? Because it's hilarious. xD
+Lymarie Guzmán Pérez Slice of Life / Comedy I guess
+NykowPalalum Nice! Now I know what to recommend when people say SoL isn't funny. xD
Lymarie Guzmán Pérez There's a lot of Slice of Life / Comedy. Nichijou and Tamako Market for exemple. But I guess it depends on the sense of humour of people. ^^
+NykowPalalum I haven't seen Nichijou yet, but from what I HAVE seen, it seems pretty funny. Though it's humor seems to be mostly random/weird gimmicks. xD
And while Seitokai Yakuindomo can be pretty damn "WTF" at times, it has jokes most people can understand/enjoy. :P
I had never heard of Tamako Market tho.
Great video! I can really tell you had fun with the editing xD
*A slice of what slice of life has to offer.*
Fuck you man.
Fucking puns.
Liked.
I do love me some good slice of life story.
But I think it can also be listed on sub-genre in some cases like Gargantia and Grimgar. Yes, both series have some acction to them, but that is by far the focus of the story but rather the progresive development of their characters in their respective worlds.
Even the endings are more SoL than acction oriented: Gargantia ends with a very emotinal message while Grimgar has rather slow paced end.
Your mention of Clannad After Story lit me up, love that anime to death. My all-time favorite.
Glad you liked it! Please check out my video dedicated to Clannad :)
@@GenkiRuss ON MY WAY
edit: ehh I already watched that before reading this comment. I'm always hungry for Clannad content
you've got that Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous narrator voice lol.
Fav Slice of Life is probably Disney's Highschool Musical, a classic. I mean the ost is amazing. Gabriella is my waifu ;)
I just finished rewatching hanasaku iroha and now I'm sad. Thank you for listening to my personal problems! See ya later!
It comes down to relating characters to your own life and others you have encountered.
It can be represented in as many ways as someone can think of; it’s the point of how the artists present the story.
I teared up a little when the scene with Renge riding off into the sunset away from Dagashiya played.
Girls Last Tour, hands down, the most eye-opening experience.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Lucky Star. that's probably one of my favorite slice of life anime (alongside Azumanga Daioh)
barakamon, welcome to the nhk, gin no saji & kids on the slope are probably my favourite slice of life animes
K-On and Hibike Euph is ❤️
This was so nice you are such a smart anime watcher
I like that small clip of natsume and his cat :) would it be alright to ask for a video about hibike euphonium or natsume's book of friends? ty
Yay another Russ video.
Ah yes, Slice of Life is a wonderful genre. Wolf Children, Kimi ni Todoke, Clannad and Chihayafuru are some of my favorites, just to name a few.
My fav slice of life is k on
Slice of life is one of my favorite genre as well :) some of my favorites are:
Usagi Drop
Azumanga Daioh
Ping Pong the Animation
Welcome to the NHK
Haibane Renmei
Shirobako
Space Brothers
Wait, those are all categorized as Slice of Life? So anything but Shonen? And with this list you‘ll love Nichijou.
Finally have a show to watch now! Hanasaku Iroha here we come!
Great video though!
Slice of life genre taught me so much
K on is the best anime ever
For me k on is my favorite fun happy anime
While my favorite overall is Clannad and after story
Kids on the slope and Welcome to the NHK are god tier slice of life anime imo
Man, I sure do like Russ.
AYYEEE nice video keep em comin!:)
Yuyushiki is what you see is what you get... boy ain't that the truth.
Still want more don't care.
Was surprised to see Yuyushiki in the montage. Though nobody else has seen that shown.
Go k on
I think that anime like the pet girl of sukaraso teach thinks like life is filled with hardships but just get up and keep trying but anime like one piece just teach you not to give money to lazy producers (or they will spend 40 episodes longer then most series charging up a attack)
your videos give that theatrical performance feel to it.
Clannad After Story was a soul crushing experience. Mainly because of how the characters grew on you in Season 1. Season 1 is a bit slow but it's absolutely essential to getting the full impact of Season 2. The show will shatter your heart & then put the pieces back together. Then when you think everything is just fine & dandy, it will throw your heart into a blender & grind it into dust. At the end of this emotional roller-coaster is a unique experience that cannot be replicated. Never was a fan of Slice of Life anime until I gave Clannad a try. Clannad is without a doubt one of the best animes I've ever experienced. Btw, you're underrated as fuck. Excellent video. *Tips Fedora*
Clannad Afterstory was indeed amazing. It was the first time i saw such raw emotion. Its just it really saddens me Afterstory is so pushed while season 1 is ignored by many. Maybe because Fuko is my favorite. Alot of people who bash Season 1 fail to realize that Afterstory affected them so much Because of season 1 :/
+Free Jazz I agree with you wholeheartedly. Skipping Season 1 would be a HUGEEE mistake for Clannad newcomers. It definitely lays the groundwork for Season 2. I'm beyond relieved that I didn't skip the first season.
+Teh Architek On Myanimelist.net top anime list, Afterstory is ranked at #9 while Season 1 is ranked..#171. I used to complain when it was at #32, what happened?
My favorite one is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - Diamond is Unbreakable of course.
How could you not love Slice of Life + Stands
Slice of Life and Romance are my favourite genres.
not sure if it's slice of life, but i just finished watching Kyousougiga, went straight into my top 3 animes. top video Russ :)
+KonnichiWagwan Thanks! For the record, I'm also a huge fan of Kyousougiga
I had misconceptions like this before but im really trying to get into it. I do think the art styles in these types of anime are usually pretty bland or too moe but they have some great stuff. Nagi no asukara is one of my favorite anime ever. Hanayamata has a great art style despite being moe. There are also comedy anime like servant x service which was great. There are ones like castle town dandelion which focuses on family relationships, while the whole family has powers and rules over a city. Sound euphonium focused on character drama in a school band while also showing how they go from scrubs to great musicians. There is a lot in the genre. There is some crap but also some great stuff. I plan to watch hanasaku iroha, the pet girl of sakurasou, and many more. Im also watching 4 anime this season that can be considered slice of life. Cant wait to see more from this genre
Yay! Someone made a video about this! Slice of life has always meant something more to me than just moe blobs, and you captured the beauty of slice of life perfectly! Thank u\(^o^)/
anohana made me cry like hell.
ima SoL fan and K-On, Lucky Star, Kanon and Hanayamata are some of my favorite Slice of Lifes. Ive honestly watched Lucky Star 40 times, maybe more yet i love KOn a lil more
Nagi no Asu Kara is super underrated.
K-on is beautiful. A cute anime like that can make the manliest weeb cry with some scenes. The music they wrote for Azusa was just absolutely beautiful, couldn't help myself not to cry like a 'lil bitch.
I love k-on
Space Brothers is my favourite Slice of Life. Barakamon is great as well.
Wonderful
I heard Tutti! and instantly subscribed.
Clannad is the best slice of life anime ever
no
*is in my opinion
Fantastic!
Hanasaku Iroha supremacy
Man this video is great, really glad to see this misconception cleared up. btw I absolutely love Kokoro Connect, all time favourite.
I'm actually running out of good slice of life anime to watch. On my list right now the only thing I have left for a rainy day is Barakamon & only because I feel it will be the last of what I consider will appeal to me in this genre. Also if you want me to offer a suggestion if you have not watched it yet of course is I think you would really enjoy Shirobako! It is a Great Slice of Life anime!
Ooh, almost forgot! Natsuyuki Rendezvous. It may appeal to the female audience a bit more, but who knows. You may like it. The main characters are in their mid-20's I believe. Its about a wife who's husband dies and secretly watches over her as a ghost. And one day a young man begins to court his wife and so the husband tries many things to keep them apart. It was a really good anime. And it's ending was VERY satisfying :)
My problem is that SOL does not have enough Eventful moments that feel connective to the character development. It often feels like I have to walking through a swamp, to get to the more juicer character developments, which is why I believe you said you really like "Clannad After story". I think that story is more appealing because the story actually presents more meaningful events that string along and carry these Characters! Which is Inherently more rewarding to watch.
Most SoL just don't appeal to me, generally. Anime I tend to enjoy are the exciting and eventful. That isn't to say I won't give some of the better SoL anime a try.
Maybe.
I would recommend Kokoro Connect because I think the way story progresses is like a bit of mystery-thriller-esque.
+Selena C Hey why don't you buy something instead of watching it for free illegally on the internet? If you can't then shut up. You are not paid a single penny to the producers
Hoàng Long ...What does that have to do with the fact that I don't really watch SoL anime???
And, for the record, I've been using only Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Daisuki to watch anime for a while now.
Yes! Another Russ video, this really made my day. Keep up the great work!
UA-cam recommended me this video after i finished bocchi the rock
Damn what a good vids
my favorite slices of life anime that's a hard one but i say air and little buster
are one of them
What is little busters ive heared of it
I'm so happy you mentioned Hanasaku Iroha!! Its actually my favourite anime. But no one really talks about it XD. Slice of Life is also my favorite genre 😀
BARAKAMON
5:43 Is that the dad from Princess Evangile?
I'm a simple man, I see K-On, I click
my most favourite genres are Sports and Psychological.
also most slice of life I have tried have felt extremely boring to me, especially Studio Ghibli's!
Unless the Slice of Life anime has psychology in it like Aku no Hana or is also a Sports anime like Kuroko no Basuke!
Understandable. Everyone has different preferences. I love Slide of Life anime and Studio Ghibli movies haha. But I understand that they could be considered "boring". Especially for someone like you who favors psychological anime ect. It isn't for everyone :)
So, one of my favorite anime series of all time is Welcome to the NHK. Would that be considered a slice of life show?
+Digital Napoleon hmm i havent watched it but i know how to plot goes.
i think it has elements of a slice of life with the crazy humor and stuff, but i think it falls more in a psychological thriller and romance
definitely more slice of life than romance wtf, if anything it's bringing attention to an important topic, so not so much psychological either.
if I had to categorize NHK it'd def be slice of life
+Shakov Skanton I would definitely recommend seeing the show, it can be a bit bleak at times, but there are also some really touching moments.
And also, Russ, are there any SoL anime you didn't enjoy or thought they were bad? If there is, I'd very much like to hear why.
+Selena C Of course! I didn't particularly like the first season of K-on, it takes the second season and movie to really bring out everything that's great about the show. I don't really think Lucky Star is all that great either, I honestly find it quite boring. Its not really charming either in my mind, just very basic comedy (for which there are better shows). But, hey, that's just my opinion :)
***** Thanks. Not very experienced in the genre, so it's nice to hear different viewpoints.
what is the anime at 1:03 ?
Good Job 👍
I love Azusa
What is the anime at 0:35? I used to watch it but totally forgot the name of it
I think it's the pet girl of sakurasao
Woah woah woah, is this real? Last video 2 weeks ago, and now we get a new video? I must be dreaming. Thanks though, I like your work
+Tenrou I'm getting back into gear, I'm telling you! Thank you :)
i really dont think its misconceptions.
some slice of life anime are different then other slice of life anime and actually have good material to offer.
like nichijou is a comedic slice of life, not really with any driven plot in mind. its kinda like watching looney tunes cartoons with bugs bunny where it was short segments.
i was ok with nichijou, it was made to be humorous.
then there's kokoro connect which i have not seen, but from clips of it, it seems fun, it has characters that actually change through the course of the show and have interesting relationships so its a show i think id like
i watched maybe 8 episodes of k-on and i kinda got bored of it. its just friends being friends having fun together...there isnt really much plot or change in characters.
We're both saying the same thing here (although I disagree on K-on, to really appreciate it you have to watch the second season). But you'll be surprised by the amount of people who do actually think slice of life is just K-on. Which is why, in my mind, I'm justified in saying its a misconception
Slice of Life and Historical are my two favorite genre's
So, in regards to Anime, *does the term/genre, "Slice of Life", define a heavy focus on a cast of characters and character interactions that are relatable to real life?*
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just trying to find a clear and short definition.
Yes. That's a good way to put it
Slice of life isn't really a genre. It doesn't describe much about the shows within.
Thank you very much! You have inspired me and shown me what is my first or second favorite type of anime.
Aria the animation, anyone watched yet?
its on my list! Gotta buckle down and get on it ha
Cute girls doing amazing things.
Im still crying because of Clannad god damn boi
Does reading the New Yorker's fiction or NPR's fresh air equal slice of life?
my favorite slice of life is school live
song @ 2:11?
Yay k on
It's more simple than that. Repeating yourself in different ways doesn't change the fact that "Slice of Life" Is one thing. Google is awesome.
Lol You've basically undermined the point of any video, good job!
***** Over thinking. At least i get an answer. Some comments didn't get one. Is my comment interesting ?
+Natsume Mangaweeb You made me laugh.
I love slice of life
slice of life is my favorite genre. I personally love those about families.
Slice of life is my favorite genre as well. Thanks for taking on some of these misconceptions and also making an entertaining video to boot. Very well done, sir.
The way you're talking sounds like you're implying that slice of life in anime is somehow different from slice of life anywhere else
+Sanny Goosave slice of life is the least agreed upon slice of life. As in everyone thinks the phrase means something different
Best Slice of Life anime is Your Lie in April without a doubt
Drama =/= Slice-of-life
I still don't like slice of life :((
Slice of life is the worst anime genre
k-on killed anime
That's dumb.
***** but it's true, moeshit killed the industry and K-on and lucky star started all of that.
+Justin Espeoni First off saying it 'killed the industry' in a factual sense is completely baseless, that's fundamentally wrong. The industry is continuing to grow post 2007 and more anime is being produced than ever before- both slice of life shows and in all genres. So really what you're saying is a personal feeling, which is fine (although I still disagree). Pointing your finger at K-on as the only reason the modern industry landscape is the way it is today is insanely narrow-sighted and another misconception which, as I stated, just dumb
+Justin Espeoni I don't see why moe killed the industry. While I'm not a big moe fan, I can't say that it has ruined anime.
+Justin Espeoni Look at you, Mr. Meme Master
Disclaimer: This is all obviously opinion and semantics. I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in the ring
I just flat out disagree that shows like Clannad or Sakurasou count as Slice of Life. The definition given here of Slice of Life is somewhat pointless, as it is extremely broad. You basically just defined it as "an anime that isn't a fighting shonen" which is a huge misnomer. To me, and many others, a slice of life anime is defined by a lack of over arching narrative, and, instead, just the daily lives of a group of people. Perhaps more defining, is that slice of life stories are about the little details. With this definition, I can agree with your point that a slice of life anime/manga doesn't have to be grounded in our world. By far my favorite slice of life anything is the Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou manga, which takes place in post apocalyptic robot land.
All of this genre distinction is useless anyway, but I feel that your definition of Slice of Life covers what I consider to be the Sol, Drama, Romance and Comedy genres. I listed some examples below.
Slice of Life: Non Non Biyori, K-on, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, JoJo Part 4, The Melancholy
Drama: Clannad, Anohana, NagiAsu, Toradora
Romance: Kare Kano, Hibike Euphonium, Bakemonogatari
Comedy: Steins;Gate, Cromartie High School, Azumanga Daioh, Chuunibyou
+FullmetalGhoul Honestly, I don't disagree with you. Honestly I just wanted this video to act as a foundation for which I could express how I believe shows typically branded as 'cute and nothing more' are actually a lot more than that.
***** Yeah, I gotcha. If you haven't seen it, I recommend Digibro's video on K-On. He makes one of the most convincing arguments possible that K-On and kin are far more than just cute. Tbh, Im personally way more of a Non Non Biyori fan. If I were to score the three SoLs I mentioned, It'd end up something like this:
K-On = 7
Non Non Biyori = 9
YKK = 10
Heh, my average is 4.7 though, so don't think that I don't like K-On. Though, sadly enough, I never got around to watching S2. It's been like 3 years since I first watched S1, and I've seen it twice since then, but I never watched the next season, which I heard was a huge improvement. What do you think?
I know this comment is old as fuck and you may have seen it but if you finish S2 then at some point down the line rewatch the show again you'll definitely like S1 a lot more the second time around.
Funnily enough, I quit anime around 2 months after writing this comment, but I ended up re-watching S1, and watching S2 of K-on, and completely falling in love with it.
Wyatt Walsh
JoJo part 4 that contained BITES ZA DUSTO is a slice of life genre ?? LMAO
