It would be a disaster if Garmin ditched MIP displays in all Forerunner and Fenix watches. If there is demand for flashy screens, they should offer both MIP and AMOLED at the same time. I switched to Garmin not only for great sports tracking and durability but also because I hated gesture mode on other watches and I loved the idea of energy efficient screens reminding me of real watches, not smartphones. And I love having seconds hand on an analog watch face, clearly visible white backgrounds during activity and a TRULY always on display without constant dimming and longevity issues warning.

Good review. I have had my 935 since it's launch. I watched your review as well as reviews from others and decided that the 965 was a significant enough improvement over my old 935 (that as held up quite well the last 6-years) to finally upgrade. Ha, I never knew what I was missing over the last few years until I started using this 965. Thanks again and keep up the great reviews, they have been very helpful over the years

I have been having a 935 for 7 years and simply love it. All along I have been thinking of getting a newer one. While I see incremental improvements in the watches to the 965, I haven’t seen any really milestone achievements. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I had the 935 til March. Then I decided to buy a new Garmin after reading a lot of tests and watching videos. I bought the Epix Gen 2 Sapphire. Was great the first few days. But when I started my first run with it, I was kind of shocked: It was raining a little bit and I couldn´t really see the display. So after trying another run, I sold it and bought the Fenix 7X Solar Sapphire. Display is fine now and the accu capictiy ist just phenomenal. My wife is using my 935 right now, cause it still works fine.
I’m in the same boat. My 935 just keeps chugging along. It’s a reliable tool and I’m not sure I need to upgrade. I would like the extra metrics the 965 has but I can live with my RDpod for now!!
Garmin's advantage in their design, development, and manufacturing allows them to rapidly iterate through product concepts. It's part of Garmin's DNA. So it's great to see AMOLED display with the 965. I'm not surprised as the Epix 2 did so well. That rapid innovation allows them to experiment with devices like the FR 945LTE which they are having to rethink - carrier relationships/coverage/features dependent on mobile OS ecosystems/etc. Or the Enduro 2, which is a special child in its own niche. So they occasionally have to discard / orphan experiments as well. What they need to do though is get their software execution and sharing to a much better state. I'm sure it has improved vastly over the last 10+ years, but still, silos happen especially with variants in HW components. If Garmin can get their act together on the OS portability - they will continue to excel.
Thank you for a quick and in-depth review of the new forerunner 965. Will you do also the comparison video between Forerunner 965 and Fenix 7 sapphire solar? It would be much appreciated.
Can’t remember ever buying a Garmin product without first watching one of your reviews. Today is no different. Watch the review, bought the watch. Thanks from my wife. 😂
I do really like the industry leading Nacho Cheese Dispenser feature. Everytime I run out of it in theatre while watching movies, I don't need to go out for a refill anymore. This is more useful than the flash light. Earlier I used flashlight to go from the theatre to the nacho counter to get the cheese.
As the owner of the 955, I feel a little cheated from the perspective of future software updates that seem to push the 955 away over time, especially considering that the latest SW updates for the 955 sucks and only multiply the problems.
Are you fucking kidding me Garmin?! I JUST bit the bullet and got my 955 LAST MONTH! I didn't get a new watch for 4 years!! I had no idea this was coming out... Great review though!
Phew!!! My wife bought me the 955 and within a month, I started to see news that the 965 was being launched. I instantly thought oh no, what does that mean, should she have held off?? Thankfully, I don't see much that I'm missing out on, besides the AMOLED display, as she also got the RD pod accessory. Have you compared the additional stats provided with the writs based RD to those that you get with the 955 + RD pod? At least I don't feel like I'm instantly missing out!! 😀
I really like the idea of this watch but what would make me really happier is if they could get the MIP screen to be actually vibrant. I want to be able to give the watch a quick glance to see, you know... The time, without it having to alert everyone the screen just activated.
You made a comment questioning Garmin sport differences. One reason is that this watch is rated for 5 ATM. Epix is 10 ATM, which Garmin considers appropriate for "high-speed water sports."
I have the 955 and love it. The new display on the 965 is not worth switching from the 955. I will wait until mayne an Epix gen 3 or Fenix 8 are released.
Another brilliant video as always 👍 it looks amazing, I'm going to try and hold off for the next Fenix I think, as the sapphire glass has been a life saver 🙌
Amoled is a major negative. If I wanted that I would wear an Apple Watch. As an ultra runner, battery life is critical as well as a bezel that doesn’t scratch or crack easily. I’ll stay with my Forerunner 945. My next watch will be when I can get at least 30-32 hours at full GPS for longer races.
Not sure about the Nacho dispenser feature lol. But as a user of multiple Garmin devices, the Edge 130, Edge 530,Rally XC plus my Polar H10 linked to the Edge devices. I’m still on multiple platforms because of my Polar watch but I’m looking to replace the Polar watch with a Garmin Forerunner or Epix2
Oohhh nice... Probably now there will be loads of 955 coming on to the 2nd hand market for reduced prices. I have been eyeing the 955 to replace my vivoactive 4, but didn't want to shell out 500,- I also really want the touchscreen, so the 255 was out of the question.
So they released 955 AMOLED. I find it puzzling that with 945 LTE they didn't think it was worth of 955, but now they think changing screen is worth of 965.
Great review but we are really looking forward for the in depth battery comparison with the 955 (literally which one dies earlier like Mr. Whostheboss does with iphones). Btw can you easily transfer data from 935 to 965?
Let's hope Garmin won't do this to other watches, I switched from Samsung Galaxy Active to Garmin because I couldn't just glance at my watch to tell the freaking time without twisting my wrist whilst typing at work!! Can't tell the time if i am holding a drink....or the AOD would drain my battery, if I run a lot or long run then I have to charge it every 2 days or so....and plugging in the watch, phone, work phone, tablet, headphones in everyday was just getting too much.....the 265 is just a more expensive Galaxy Active that doesn't have wireless charging and No ECG lol
In your opinion, is the extra niceness of the maps on the 965 a significant improvement in usability? If so, I’m leaning towards the 965 over the 955 solar

Deal breaker for me if it's not good open water and great at the pool. Thanks so much for your content, hope you read this.
965 does look very nice, especially the display, but as a ultrarunner, I would prefer a longer battery life on the 955. The cost would be another consideration, not sure I would pay extra.
@@jargontaka I don't know why you say that. It will last 30 hours on GPS. That will get you a 100k no problem and maybe a 100 miler. Depending on the course of course. If you're willing to do gesture it can also prob do most events under 100mi with multiband.
I can’t say I like the new visual software layout. Colors seem cheap and bad design. In fact I prefer the looks of my 255’s menu. Too bad cuz I do love the bigger amoled screen.. I guess a 1.4 inch screen epix 3 would be perfect 😅
Yay a 945 with a fancy screen, new interface and features that 95% of the users won’t ever use! - 945 is staying with me, still not convinced an upgrade is needed with this new release.
Another great to-the-point review by Mr. Maker. However, I take issue with your statement that raising the price $100 "is fine". This is their LOW END watch that does most of their latest fitness software including Multi Sport and Mapping. Adding $100 for an OLED display is crazy, The Apple Watch SE at less than $250 has a similar display. The choice should be between better battery or better display - not $100 more.
@@charlesoutthere The point I was making is that this is the low end of their watches that do everything their software allows. This is music, mapping, all their fitness profiles, all their readiness scoring. This has been the case with their 9xx series watches for a while, with Fenix, the Epix and their specialty watches above that. The new 265 doesn’t do mapping for instance. In their competitor Apple’s lineup, all the models run all their software (with the exception of things the hardware doesn’t allow, or a few watch faces)
@@toadlguy can't agree. First off, none of the Garmin watches run all of their software, since all line ups have unique features. I don't have one to check, but I wonder if the Apple Watch SE has all the tricks as well (minus the hardware related ones). But from my point of view, Apple is not a Garmin competitor ( and vice versa). Apple makes smartwatches that some people can use for sports, but that's not really the point. And they're made to be used with an iPhone. Sure you can use it without your phone on you, but that's not my point: it doesn't work well with Android and other systems. As a result, as with their phones, they have a restricted line up. On the other hand, Garmin makes primarily sport watches that can be used as smartwatches, and work with major systems (both iOs and Android). And they make a lot more products to actually give what people want. It's totally arguable, but the very vast majority of people who buy an Apple Watch won't use most of its features. Pretty sure that's not true with Garmin watches. Apple makes watches with many features that most of their clients don't need to justify a high price and make wide margins, riding the fan base / brand hype. While Garmin makes multiple watches so that people can choose what they really need. To each their own! Result being, obviously, not all Garmin watches have the same features. And that's for the better, at least in my opinion.
I preferred the older models they trying to be like apple now, Garmin is way better then apple n Samsung dont know why they are competing! I am still rocking the 245 and its still great 👍🏻
You're awesome man. I lovvvvvvve you bulleted approach to new variants released! Came to you first! Can NOT believe they did 1.4" w titanium bezel at $599!
Garmin.com website is always 5-8 weeks, they ship last to people. It's supposed to be immediate availablability. Typically other places like Amazon, Best Buy, and REI are fastest.
Is the 965 trying to incorporate some of the features from the Whoop band? HRV status.? That’s super cool. Time to ditch Whoop? Thoughts? Great review by the way…
I much prefer the MIP display instead of Amoled but I would say the UI design of the 965 feels much more nice, modern and premium compared to Fenix 7 hopefully Garmin don't put less effort or even ditch the MIP display on newer interations
@@iMaxPatten "battery efficiency" Well that's the entire point of MIP display. Offer more options to consumers is never bad And solar doesn’t generate enough power to make a difference with the higher power needs of a brighter display Maybe, one day in the future we have a screen like Amoled but more battery efficiency and no risk of burn in
hi Ray, I love your videos and am a recent subscriber. I am considering between Venu 3 and FR 965, both within my budget..which one would you recommend between them ?
I was really hoping they were going to update their antiquated charging port. Please give us wireless. I'm holding onto my Fenix 5X until I get wireless in a multisport
Hoping that Unified Training Status will sync HRV info. Really excited to see the video about where they are taking it. I would love to be able to have two Garmin watches and get all the features.
I have 2 Fenix (Feni?) and a base model Epix. I switch watches around once per week. Not an athlete, but other than steps they have no idea what I'm doing unfortunately.
@@fbicking Yes, I have never worn one long enough to get an HRV, or really any training info. I wanted multiple watches, for comparison reasons,...careful what you wish for :)
I do feel like one comment is a bit glossed over. Updates stopping after 2/3 years is kinda bullshit. These new watches don't get major upgrades you need for the majority of people to upgrade and spend another $500 on every few years. They just stop updating them because they make so many watches and don't want to support them so you spend more money. I want my watch to last a minimum of 4 years, but it should be longer. I got burned once by garmin because of that and their poor material choice that broke the heart rate monitor on the 935. It's why i dropped them for coros.
I had some battery problems on my forerunner. It seems that if you have more than 200 strava segments starred, and strava segment sync enabled. It causes the watch to never sync properly, and try again and again. With no obvious reason, other than checking the logs on the app... Disabling strava segments on the garmin connect app did the trick...
I'd bet the 965 because it is lighter and thinner. I did the same with the 935 over a Fenix 5. The weight and bulk difference might not seem much in the specs, but you'd definitely notice day to day wearing it.
It would be a disaster if Garmin ditched MIP displays in all Forerunner and Fenix watches. If there is demand for flashy screens, they should offer both MIP and AMOLED at the same time. what is this??
Jesus i literally JUST bought the 955 like two months ago!!! 😢
Great! Thanks for the review!
965 does look very nice, especially the display, but as a ultrarunner, I would prefer a longer battery life on the 955. The cost would be another consideration, not sure I would pay extra.
There's always the Epix.
@@wadeduvall7026 Epix is not good for Ultra
@@jargontaka I don't know why you say that. It will last 30 hours on GPS. That will get you a 100k no problem and maybe a 100 miler. Depending on the course of course. If you're willing to do gesture it can also prob do most events under 100mi with multiband.
But 965 and 955 have the same battery life, what is wrong with you people!
@@wadeduvall7026 20 grams heavier, not worth it
I can’t say I like the new visual software layout. Colors seem cheap and bad design. In fact I prefer the looks of my 255’s menu. Too bad cuz I do love the bigger amoled screen.. I guess a 1.4 inch screen epix 3 would be perfect 😅
I like your in-depth review. I am about to buy the Marq 2 Athlete. May you please do the comparison between Marq 2 Athlete and Forerunner 965.
Convinced me to buy one. Nice one
Nacho cheese dispenser??? Now there is something that needs to be added to the Garmin feature list! ;)
Happy to get the training load ratio on my 955 🙂
Yay a 945 with a fancy screen, new interface and features that 95% of the users won’t ever use! - 945 is staying with me, still not convinced an upgrade is needed with this new release.
Um surprise, it’s never worth going a single model up as technology doesn’t advance that fast genius
Smarter than you! Like most..@@blue0152
Knowing the video is about the 965, that model is clearly not their low end watch.... more like the high-end of the Forerunners series.
And that's for the better, at least in my opinion.
do you think a 975 will come out soon
Looks like it is, but $100 off this one now
ok that's really very nice and all but for the love of god release the Edge x40 series, Garmin I beg you!
I just ordered this watch
I preferred the older models they trying to be like apple now, Garmin is way better then apple n Samsung dont know why they are competing! I am still rocking the 245 and its still great 👍🏻
As alway, awesome detailed review Ray. Is the glass flat on the 965? Does it allow a screen protector?
It’s flat, but there’s a tiny .5mm wide slight dip at the edge closest to the bezel.
Best existing Feature: Nacho Cheese Dispenser. 😍 Nothing better after 25 k into a run! 😃
Tiger shark encounter in the water and mountain lion on the mountain. Man I’d be so nervous doing outdoor activities with you 😂
Do Garmin epix gen 2 vs Garmin Forerunner 965
Great job as usual👍
You are wearing always the perfect shirt 👌
Looks gorgeous there!
Thanks Ray! Can’t wait to get me some “Garmin macaroni “ 👍
Perhaps overuse of the nacho cheese dispenser feature was the source of battery woes? (I hear that cutting down on the cheese leads to longer life)
I need my LTE. Sticking with the 945. I've had a health scare and would rather have LTE than have to carry a phone.
You're awesome man. I lovvvvvvve you bulleted approach to new variants released! Came to you first! Can NOT believe they did 1.4" w titanium bezel at $599!
And question - website says 5-8 weeks for any 965 - has Garmin shared anything about more realistic (or shorter) shipment times?
Garmin.com website is always 5-8 weeks, they ship last to people. It's supposed to be immediate availablability. Typically other places like Amazon, Best Buy, and REI are fastest.
@@Dcrainmaker does the 965 have quickfit?
Nacho cheese dispenser too? Wow!
Is the 965 trying to incorporate some of the features from the Whoop band? HRV status.? That’s super cool. Time to ditch Whoop? Thoughts? Great review by the way…
That UI revamp looks great. I hope it will find its way to the Epix, too.
Really looking forward to the nacho cheese dispenser 🤣 4:50
I much prefer the MIP display instead of Amoled but I would say the UI design of the 965 feels much more nice, modern and premium compared to Fenix 7
hopefully Garmin don't put less effort or even ditch the MIP display on newer interations
MiP is a dead tech walking only useful for its battery efficiency. Solar and other improvements will make it redundant soon.
@@iMaxPatten "battery efficiency" Well that's the entire point of MIP display. Offer more options to consumers is never bad
And solar doesn’t generate enough power to make a difference with the higher power needs of a brighter display
Maybe, one day in the future we have a screen like Amoled but more battery efficiency and no risk of burn in
How about a 965 Vs Epix 2 video/article?
hi Ray, I love your videos and am a recent subscriber. I am considering between Venu 3 and FR 965, both within my budget..which one would you recommend between them ?
I was really hoping they were going to update their antiquated charging port. Please give us wireless. I'm holding onto my Fenix 5X until I get wireless in a multisport
Yeah, weird situation regarding june 2022 955 premiere...
@@fendermon That sucks. I absolutely need to to carry over HRV. I use it for recovery.
@@fbicking Yes, I have never worn one long enough to get an HRV, or really any training info. I wanted multiple watches, for comparison reasons,...careful what you wish for :)
In my experience the only that didn’t sync was HRV Status.. Everything else synced quite smoothly including Stress Level & Sleep Score
@@vinads1309 I also work nights so sleep tracking is sketchy at best. That might be why my readings are mush.
Thank you very much Ray. If you had to choose between the FR965 and the Epix2 (or even the new FR265), which one would you choose?
I'd bet the 965 because it is lighter and thinner. I did the same with the 935 over a Fenix 5. The weight and bulk difference might not seem much in the specs, but you'd definitely notice day to day wearing it.
He just made a new video on this if you want to check it out
9 hours sleep.. you lucky man!
The dispenser bullet point got me laughing
