I got a Garmin FR 245 after starting running in lockdown for about £140 off Amazon. Just right for all basic info. The 165 looks even better. No need for expensive watches at all! Great video as always!

Ben, I agree with you when it comes to watches. As a runner, I always preferred the lightest watch and never used many features. It's funny that many reviewers say that cheaper models are entry level watches for new runners. The reality, however, is that pros like Kipchoge tend to use the cheap watches and casual joggers those flagship models that cost thousands of euros.

      @Jon-hb6gx Місяць тому +10

I like more basic watches too but comparing to pros is pointless for amateurs. They have colleagues providing data and insights and don't rely on tech as much as me (for example) because they are so much more experienced.

I bought a Fenix thinking it was the mutts nuts, whilst it’s a great watch I just didn’t need that much of a watch.
I’ve now got a Coros pace 3 and absolutely love it, I forget it’s on my wrist! The tech for the price point is great too!

I'll never get rid of my Enduro 2... from mountaineering to running around the neighborhood. It's the perfect watch for me, Ive only had it for 3 weeks now but the more I use it the more features I end up using. Courses in the mountains with all the info and extremely detailed maps, ditching relying on my phone. The multitude of fitness tracking performance metrics have pushed me to go farther and harder. The suggested work outs are great as my goals have drifted to running a marathon and really interested in pushing myself to the limit with ultramarathons in the mountains. So for multi-day backpacking trips, Navigation in terrible weather with zero visibility, long distance runs, and future proofing my watch for my goals I couldn't be happier. Plus id recommend the Enduro 2 to anyone who has similar lifestyle choices. It's just the right amount of watch for me, I like it better than my AWU2. The simplicity of the MIP display... just perfection.

As someone that has both the Epix Pro Gen 2 and the 165. I can tell you that you are absolutely right. I cannot understand why the 165 gets so much hate. It is such an amazing little watch. Now, the killer feature from the Epix is that flashlight. I use it every run because I run at 5AM, but the same can be accomplished with running lights. 2 remarks:
I'm using the shit out of my Tactix 7. Best watch I ever had and incredible battery life. This Saturday for example I ran 12 laps in an Backyard Ultra. It was pretty cold already, running time was around 10hrs, I started with 99% and stopped with 79%. And I had similar experiences with other long runs. It gives me some peace of mind to know that the battery will last way longer than I will. 😆
I have waterproof socks and I love them. There is one thing one should know: they prevent water from coming in as good as from getting out. Did a mud run once where we had to cross hip deep water just at the beginning. I had to run the rest of it with balloonesque waterlogged socks. Just so you know: If you expect this to happen maybe choose "normal" socks...

The 90g pouches on the other hand though… I was left wondering how much had i used or not used, whereas I found the 30s a good way of knowing exactly what I was hitting on regular 20min intervals.
The sweat test… well worth it and also an investment for life as your body won’t genetically change the amount of sweat you produce so once you know that figure their race planner is then fantastic to really dial in that nutrition plan.

I'm a satisfied Fenix 6 owner, but I do miss the sleekness of my old Forerunner from time to time. That said, I'm more than just a runner, so I do get good use out of the additional features of the Fenix. For dedicated runners though, Garmin's entry-level watches have come on hugely in the last few years and they are missing very few features in comparison to the premium watches. The only thing that would put me off is the marginal battery life. In comparison to a MIP watch, their battery does not have to degrade much before their usefulness is compromised, which is ultimately going to result in having to buy a new watch sooner.

+1 for the waterproof socks! Some people just say that's part of trail running (getting wet) but for shorter runs they are amazing! Truthfully I haven't tried them past 20km but maybe they'd be alright longer as well. Also, the knee high ones are amazing for snowshoe running, so when the snow flicks onto your calf then it doesn't melt and freeze your legs.
I love of simplicity of Precision gels and ease to track carbs but I personally hate the flavour. I can manage by basically trying to use the gel without taking a breath lol. But I love the little tab holder so that you don't risk littering. I also like SIS Beta...40g of carbs each so also easy to track.

Honestly: Heated bedsheet (or normal blanket) and a usb fan - because when I finish a run I like to relax and recover. Spec'ing into my bed allows this to be a very enjoyable part of running. The heat feels good on my calves, but combined with the cooling of a tiny fan by my bedside allows my body to regulate temperature really easily.

For hamstring strength, you don’t need gimmicky devices. SLDLs, good mornings and leg curls will all provide a much better stimulus to your hamstrings for strength than that roller. All you need is a barbell or some dumbbells and sufficient weight that allows you to do 3-6 good quality reps before needing to rest. To train strength, this is the rep range you are aiming for and you need heavy weight to achieve stronger muscles. This device may improve form to some degree, but your classic compound moves with weights will do a lot more.

Yes you can build strong hamstrings with these but the roller or sliders aren’t gimmicky and are used by multiple professional sports team’s S&C coaches. The roller helps develop power and speed at lengthened positions. It trains the muscles and tendons to fire at length and can be beneficial to prevent injury or improve speed. Building strong but not powerful hamstrings is a recipe for injury.

I had to think really hard one time when I saw an Epix on sale. I was ready to replace my 255 when I told myself that I'd just be using running stuff on the Epix and it wouldn't make me remotely faster at running. Lmao. Now I'm planning to buy my wife the 165 to replace her 55. The 55 had no DSW race calendar and I'm sick of telling my wife what to do. I hope this time she listens to her watch better than she listens to the workout I give her.

10:20 in defence of Garmin: their single-band GPS seems to be so good it rivals competitors' dual-band setups. I don't think dual-band GPS should be a reason to look at a different watch at this price point.

I have a 2 year old Garmin that now only charges 50% of the time I plug it in. I guess that the charging point thingies are damaged/dirty but my attempts (mainly with a toothpick) to try and tidy them up haven't worked. It's definitely the watch rather than the charger that's the issue(same problem with multiple chargers). Anyone have any tips for that problem with a Garmin? I'm probably about to jump ship to Coros

I use isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol. I put some on a tissue, cloth, or cotton wool ball, and clean the contacts on the watch and the connector. That seems to get it charging reliably again for a few months until the watch gets gunked up from salty sweat and dead skin cells.
