THE LOVE WITCH (2016)
Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she at last meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved drives her to the brink of insanity and murder.
For a movie made in 2016, it looks very, very 60's. They did a great job with the set design, wardrobe and choreography. Which reminds me, add 1967's Valley of the Dolls to your list of movies to do. Thanks.
Omg I didn't know it wasn't from the 60s
Love Witch is a trip. Psychedelic 70's style surrounding a nuanced tale of trauma and obsession.
I feel like the repeated symbol of the cup and the dagger is a reference to Wicca, where the dagger represents masculinity (a phallic symbol) and the cup represents femininity (a yonic symbol) when he’s sipping from a gigantic cup or Elaine’s flask, hes taking from her “vagina” where she holds power, but when elaine is alone she’s surrounded by daggers because the patriarchy is omnipresent over her in solitude
I’m a theology major in grad school and the Love Witch is really interesting because it displays magic’s shadow side as well as how one bad leader can screw over an initiate’s mindset. The magic system’s based on Wicca. It’s a religion pretty well-known for gender and archetype balance as well as a mode of empowerment. But as Gahan displays, it can be distorted and exploited if in the wrong hands. So rather than using magic to move on, Elaine repeated the cycle with herself as the perpetrator rather than the victim. All of the men she encounters fell under her spell without their consent. That’s why their existing emotions were amplified threefold and also why a lot of circles don’t recommend love spells especially because the side effects can be more harmful than good. When you really think about it, Elaine’s story is a tragedy - she didn’t have a single positive male model in her life. Combine that with how Gahan confines magic to the gender binary (the opposite of what magic is) and Elaine was at her worst - magically and emotionally.
3 of Swords usually means an earth shattering heartbreak. So these guys literally died of heartbreak. (In the case of Griff it was more literal) In the final shot, the picture and the reality are total opposites. Elaine didn’t truly win Griff over as proven by his thoughts after the hand fasting and when he confronted her with the evidence.
Also took me a second viewing to realize that Sgt. Griff was the dude from the opening traffic stop. That’s why they had that “vibe” of familiarity.
Finally, it’s super satisfying as a film buff because Anna Biller practically did everything for this film. She directed, wrote, produced, researched, set designed, and even assisted with the music (to mention a few things). Kyle Kallgren did a great review listing all the references Biller used in the film - ua-cam.com/video/VQqbuZIv1DA/v-deo.html. The Technicolor film also helps you get into Elaine’s mindset.
They totally nailed the retro vibes with this. The 1st time I seen it I didn't know it was made in 2016 and couldn't believe it when I found out.
Elaine has an amazing sense of style and makeup!
"You wonder why we pee in flasks and murder you? It's not surprising." I nearly spat my drink out! Lol!
This movie was absolutely genius. Everything from the costumes and make up the set design the background are the whole seen the campiness and especially the actors and actresses delivery. I am mediately thought I was watching a late 60s movie. Jessica Robinson did a beautiful job. Anna Biller is an amazing writer. pure genius.
the love witch really delves a lot into women and men's psychology, which is expected since the director anna biller is married to Robert greene
its got a femme fatale vibe goin on with supernatural horror like the movie spellbinder starring kelly preston
This is one of the most beautiful films i have ever seen! One of my top 20 films of all time.
just realized who the cop in the beginning was!
omg glad more people are watching and appreciating this gem!!!
I love Anna Biller films. They're very stylistic (some would say "subversive) but they're also hilarious in a very dark and deadpan fashion and Biller is in on the joke....The actors are always serious, but you can see a twinkle in their eyes when they are on the verge of cracking up during a scene.
I love this film! It was great in the cinema, the colours alone were stunning! Saw it again a few months ago in a cinema , but i've wathed it on tv a few times too..never get tired of it..constantly spotting little details in the background..the decor, the ornaments, the make up..everything is so perfectly designed..I was so interested to read Anna Biller was responsible for all of it, dwon to the smallest detail! Fisrt time i saw it i came home desperate to redecorate and buy new eyeshadows! Im 58 so i remember 70's hair & clothes..we had a very glam neighbour..didnt look like all the other mums at all..and this film reminded me of her beautiful clothes and make up! It's also hilarious! It's a wonderfully fun recreation of those 70's tits'n' satan movies i used to love when i could stay up late in the late 70's and watch them! It also reminded me why i still quite often want to whack some guys on the back of the head with a shovel!
Regarding the old guy kissing women all over, it's actually a traditional Wiccan greeting for both men and women. Each kiss is supposed to be accompanied by a blessing regarding the function of the part being kissed.
And yes, Wicca was founded by a man named Gerald Gardner (and maybe Aleister Crowley too though it's debated how much direct influence Crowley had)
this entire movie gives lana del rey vibes!!!!!!
How did Griff go from traffic cop to inspector detective whatever he is?
😂 I wondered that too.
She sounds like Paris Hilton doing her baby voice 🤣🤣🤣
2:47 see now this is why I enjoy watching others viewings! I’ve watch this film many a times yet never made that connection between the rose depiction on the tea pot. Thank you!
It’s a poppet, not a “voodoo doll”
Your voice and laugh are ASMR. I could so happily talk through a film with you
Yeah Man, she was the Cat Woman in Batman hence the late 1960s. The show was finally released in 2016.
when i saw the shop owner i thought that she may be a white witch but that was never confirmed even tho i still bilieve that
Gorgeous retrostyled film
Love this flick!
3:27 with all the love of my heart this reminded me so much of 2014 tumblr that it gave me whiplash

I watched this movie a couple days ago and I liked it, but I was expecting something else, moooore from it, specially from the fact that on the scene where she meets trish, she gets to the house by a new car. I mean, a new generation car xd. And also the scene where trish uses a cellphone!!! I was like wtf was that!!
Can someone tell me if it was just errors or intentional??

🤘😎❤
If you wanna watch something pretty, watch this....
Are you in a prison cell?
It was feminist garbage bro.
Do you even know what feminism is? It just means having the independence to own your life and equality and not treated as second class citizens/objects. Don't associate any random thing as feminism without actually knowing what feminism is.
Thank You for your narration and showing it the way You did. Genius job on your part. You are really great at it- I happened to laugh at everything, pretty much every time You did...👍🤗👏🤌❤️🔥Loved this!!!
I saw this on Shudder a while back and was ENAMORED by the cinematography and art design 🫶🏽
