The woman who plays Cheryl Dempsey is the director's wife.. she has a podcast called the Showrunner Show, and she's very bubbly IRL. It's kind of a head trip after knowing her just from this movie.

Also, the ending, where they suggest that the killer would be watching his own documentary in the theater, is (I think) a callback to the 1976 docudrama classic THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN about the real life Texarkana Moonlight Murders (what a name!). There was a sequel with the same name in 2014 which goes even heavier on the meta approach, and both play with the idea that the killer you're watching is someone you know in everyday life and might be sitting right beside you. (Definitely recommend watching, both movies are pretty good.)
Also also, in 1971 some people made a movie called THE ZODIAC KILLER as an elaborate Mystery Inc.-style plot to try and catch the actual Zodiac at the movie's premiere. They told audience members to fill out a questionaire for a raffle, and hidden INSIDE THE DROP BOX was a volunteer with a flashlight and a sample of the Zodiac Killer's handwriting from letters he had sent to newspapers. The cast and crew were hiding behind the screen and if a signal was sent that there was a handwriting match they were going to run out and grab the suspect sitting in the audience. Unfortunately, there were no matches, so either the real Zodiac didn't attend or else he could change his handwriting style.

It’s a cheapy-cheap little movie, but the overall ambition and the legitimately creepy moments add up to something kind of special. It plays like a nightmarish mid-2000s true-crime show.
    Love your videos!

Theres a fan theory that the documentary camera man, editor and/or director are the killer. It really recontextualises a lot of the film (ie how everyone is chronically talking about how clever this guy is), and it makes the interviews with Cheryl so creepy

      Wow.
So in the end when she’s saying she doesn’t know what to say bc he’s not telling her what to say is even MORE heartbreaking now with different context. 😢

except that cheryl's mom has seen him before so she'd probably recognize him... it's such a good theory though 😭

I loved this movie. I'd always wished we could've gotten a sequel that explained those missing tapes and the killer finally being caught or killed.

I remember when the mystique surrounding this movie was insane. It was abruptly pulled from wide release two weeks before it was supposed to come out and then started popping up in bootleg circles. There was this rumor that it was so horrifying, and because it was true that MGM decided to just can it.

I've never been able to stomach this film, but I've been watching some reactions. Thank you for your bravery so that I can get a safer look at it! I read in another comments section that one fan theory is that the killer is actually on the crew of the documentary, and I thought it was a chilling idea.

I love horror movies but i'm not big on disturbing movies, so i haven't watched loads which means i cant recommend many, but megan is missing is another one similar to this in the way that its both found footage and disturbing!

You're very brave to watch this movie - it's one of the few found footage movies I just can't bring myself to watch. I was happy to tag along to see it with you in a reaction video, the added distance provided with a reaction felt safe...safer. Great reaction!
Have you seen Ti West's 2013 found footage horror 'The Sacrament'? It's a wild ride!

The Sacrament is the sort of Jim Jones recreation, right? If so, then yes! I loved it. I do still need to watch his House of the Devil movie though

@@laurashawnlee Yesssss...'The House of the Devil'! It's such an 80's vibe!
I've probably mentioned the 2010 Norwegian found footage film 'Trollhunter' before, so apologies if I sound like a broken record. It's a little scary, but also really fun and absolutely mesmerizing. A good palate cleanser after 'The Poughkeepsie Tapes'.

I remember when I first heard of this film, which was in a iceberg for disturbing movies, which was months ago,I finally watched it for the first time last night and it was scary, traumatizing, and so frustrating, scary and traumatizing for the obvious reasons, but frustrating because this writing made me forget Cheryl was dead because the beginning was saying was dead but by the end they found her alive and all the memory of her being dead completely left, shocking me which is good don’t get me wrong it’s good writing but yea after wards it was a enjoyable terrifying experience and wish the never watch it again but instead hear what other people think of it but yea

Martyrs (‘08,) is a favorite film of mine and I love The Poughkeepsie Tapes, so I love that even though you say how messed up these films are you are still able to admit they are great and are willing to have a conversation about them. I find it’s a bit lonely when you love films that are in a niche likes these are, and not just these kinds of films in particular but any niche that the majority of people do not watch, or are not willing to watch.
Unfortunately, it was not officially released in the theaters because the studio that purchased it pulled it about two weeks before it was set to release.
There’s a good interview w/ the woman who played Cheryl: ua-cam.com/video/Cfdil6tkbW0/v-deo.htmlsi=L93I-Aimtej3wXBS

  • @patrickflanagan3762

Fairly certain that MGM canceled the theatrical release for this because somebody high up found it too repulsive to put out there. The writer/director, John Erick Dowdle, did the movie DEVIL after this, which has one of the dumbest premises I've ever heard for a movie and yet he actually made it a fairly good film. He deserves more opportunities.
The actress playing Cheryl is the sister of author/director Stephen Chbosky, whose adaptation of DEAR EVAN HANSEN is even more horrific than this movie.
