    I wish there was more reactions to Martyrs. It's one of the veeery few hyper disturbing movies that is actually great in my opinion and delivers more than just gore for the sake of it. Also, when I went in blind like 10 years ago, I had no idea what to expect and I remember loving how hardly predictable the plot direction was. Anna's actress performance definitely stuck with me as well.

    “Martyrs” is one of the best psychological horror movies ever made ! Now, in the ending, when mademoiselle asks Anna if she has transcended, my guess is that Anna say that yes, she has reached that state of martyrdom herself, after having endured immense physical and psychological torture, abuse and pain. I think she says that she has seen “the other side” but that there was nothing there but a void. Anna asserts that the organisation’s pursuit of answers is futile and that their actions are nothing more than sadistic cruelty.
    To me, the movie suggests that mademoiselle’s suicide symbolises her acknowledgement of the futility and moral bankruptcy of the organisation’s pursuit, and her inability to live with the guilt and horror of what she has done. I think taking her own life served as a dramatic climax that emphasises the devastating consequences of their actions and the ultimate failure of their quest for enlightenment.

    I found your comment about "shaving someone's hair a quick way of removing their identity" interesting. Mademoiselle removes her makeup, eyelashes etc. right before deleting herself. I'm not sure if there was a parallel being drawn there.

    • @76BitchSlap
      @76BitchSlap Рік тому +16

      Of course. Mademoiselle kills herself because she all of sudden lost all meaning in life by finding out the definitive answer for something she gave all her life for. After finding out the truth of what happens in the afterlife she is confronted with an emptiness and looses her complete identity (that’s why she is taking her lashes off etc.). That’s also the reason why she tells the guy in front of the bathroom door to „keep doubting“, because she realizes how important it is to have a reason to live. She‘d rather wants her brutal experiments to continue than to present the truth to the people who „worked“ for her. Mademoiselle is not a person per se, because she and her cult are scared people. so scared of the great unknown after death, that they torture women to get a glimpse of certainty for themselves. Telling the truth would cause more harm than letting the torture to continue, because life without any purpose is a Lovecraftian horror.The movie is not about what happens in the afterlife or if there’s one in the first place - the movie is about people loosing all meaning and purpose.
      You must know that the director Pascal Laugier wrote the script during a depressive moment in his life. Martyrs is nothing more than a metaphor for exactly this. A Manifest of someone who was so knocked down, that he felt that all the stories in life have been told and he felt no reason to continue. How wrong he (gladly) proved himself in the end after creating such a masterpiece of a movie.

    Mad respect for going where few other reactors have gone. And also respect for going with the original French film and not the watered-down American remake.
    It takes a special brand of fortitude to get through this movie. It is easily one of the bleakest and most gut wrenching viewing experiences of my life.
    I saw it at the North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Fest and it scarred me emotionally for life. Others in the audience had even more visceral reactions. At least one audience member was taken out of the theatre by ambulance.
    I still have no idea why the old lady killed herself at the end. Perhaps what she heard was so appealing that she got greedy and decided not to share with the rest? Perhaps it was so disappointing that nothing mattered anymore? Who knows?
    All I know is that this movie is not easily forgotten. And Lord knows I’ve tried…
    Fun fact: found out from the director at the TIFF screening that the makeup artist that created all that gloriously disgusting carnage (including the climactic ‘skinless look’) died shortly after the film’s release. How’s that for bleak…?

I'm so passionate about makeup, ESPECIALLY realistic gore special effects, and the work done in this movie is some of the most anatomically correct and appallingly accurate I've ever seen, it's truly a masterpiece... • @ethantinsley8185
    @ethantinsley8185 Рік тому +7

    There’s this guy on UA-cam who did an analysis of the ending, and out of all of the ones I’ve heard so far, his is the most interesting. Many people interpreted the ending as her finding out that there was truly nothing after death, and therefore felt extreme guilt over her entire operation because they took the life out of so many people which ultimately was all for nothing. This would make sense if it weren’t for a few factors. One, if they had done this many times before, there would have to have been duds, or in her words “victims”, that said similar if not the same things before Anna, all of which wouldn’t have been taken seriously because they weren’t experiencing true martyrdom. This organization runs this operation like a scientific experiment, where they record consistent results to come to a conclusion. If others said there was nothing before and that wasn’t enough for her to kill herself, then what makes what Anna the exception at that point? The only exception would be that she experienced true martyrdom to come to same result, but if that’s the first time someone said there was nothing after experiencing true martyrdom, then they would have to do more experiments with the same results in order to come to that conclusion. Mademoiselle hearing that once from a martyr wouldn’t have been enough for her to do that. The second factor is that Mademoiselle saying “keep doubting” before killing herself. Why would she say that if the answer was just nothing? You could argue that she was just trying to spare the hard truth but it wouldn’t make sense to do that at this point because they would’ve known that as a possibility. However, the other interpretation makes the most sense to me. The reason she killed herself and said to “keep doubting” is because Anna revealed the answer to everything too soon. This answer would have been the end to life itself because all of its secrets would be revealed, all paths would be spoiled, and therefore would render the experience useless. It’s like learning everything about a movie or book before watching or reading the material. It makes the experience pointless because you already know everything. So her saying “keep doubting” is basically implying that it’s important not to know.
    (Also, I don’t know if the movie had anything to do with queerness or the fear of others looking down on you for being in a queer relationship other then them kissing and being attracted towards one another. Beyond that , I never got that impression, and I don’t know if that was ever intended by the director or not. But it’s an interesting interpretation though.)

    I'm French and I'm overwhelmed by the fascination this movie gets in other countries. To me, it feels like it gets more love around the world than here, in its homeland. Or at least, it seems more talked about outside of France. Forereigners seem much more traumatized by it than us, who tend to see it as just another horror movie (a very interesting one, though).
    Actually, the fact that other countries talk about "French extremity" tells a lot. We don't see it that way, here.

    Thanks Laura for indulging me and watching one of my favorite horror movies. I think it's on all those
    lists because of the connection you have with the characters, the story that's told, and the hope (
    and taking away hope) that it gives you. Also I think it makes sense why anna HAD to go down in the
    basement to finally validate that lucie wasn't making it all up (since multiple times in the story
    it shows anna wasn't sure if she believed everything lucie was telling her). This movie has stuck
    with me for years and will continue to stick with me. I figure October was the perfect time to show
    this one to you. I do watch a lot of "gross out" movies (like grotesque and eat)
    but I never connect with them as much as a movie like martyrs. I'm glad you found value in the storyline
    and didn't see it as just torture porn as most people do. I love the reaction! Thanks!

    There's an overwhelming depth of despair to be had when watching this movie, but after seeing it as many times as I have- She wins in the end. She holds all the power, despite what they've done to her. She tells mademoiselle just a few words, and she fucking kills herself.
    It's easy to conclude that her suffering was for nothing, and it was, but in the small way she could, she won.
    I always see the ending not as there being nothing like so many people do. Some people also say that there's a hell and that's where mademoiselle is going, and that's why she kills herself. I think she kills herself because Anna doesn't tell her. There's no way Anna would tell her what she wants to know.

The reason why I say it did traumatize me, is because the impact it caused as such a young age. Even tho I am 23 years old now, still can’t watch the whole thing at once, causes things to my body, stomach, etc, I even have nightmares because of it or every time I tried watching it. This film really messed me up, I watched it about 5 years ago and for some crazy reason I decided to watch it again about 2 years later, thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad second time round I suppose, but nope, even though I knew what was going to happen it still messed me up the same, maybe even more than the first. It's beautifully shot and there are no filler scenes at all, everything is there for a reason, it's a masterpiece in my opinion. But it's so disturbing, so depressing and so anxiety inducing, I felt on edge the whole way through, it's one horror film I'm scared of recommending to people because of how well the director did everything. Even thinking about this film years later I feel anxious and start to feel on edge a little. Great review.

Anna sacrifices herself by giving the organization what it wants and tells what she saw, thereby ending the violence, but mademoiselle offing herself negates that so that they must continue. Mademoiselle killing herself doesn't serve any goal in the story but only to the viewer.

    While Lucie is in love with Anna, the idea of destrying the nuclear familly and the coming out was not at all the intention of the movie.
    It is never a good idea to watch a movie made in another time and another culture with our own present eyes and assume that the message is exactly the same that we'll like it to be.
    So no, the movie is not a gay romance, even though the romance is indeed present.

      It could also mean it invalidated life as she understood it. Making her continued life, her entire life’s work of discovering this truth something that she doesn’t care to share with her own cult members.
      I like one theory that what Anna said meant nothing. That it was just the ramblings of someone whose entire nervous system was destroyed and made the Madame realize that everything she’s ever worked for has been in vain. So she gives up entirely. And she tells the others to keep doubting because it’s the hope of something amazing after death that gave them all purpose, but the answer to her big question not only made her purposeless, but wholly evil.
      If it was good, why hide it from the others and perpetuate the other cult members activities? She got what she wanted so why let it continue after she’s gone? I feel it contradicts how dedicated they are discovering this, like when the Madame says that they are “researchers”.
      I agree with the answer depriving her followers of purpose, but I don’t she heard anything that pleased her.
      There’s another theory that the Madame did like what she heard, but that whatever Anna told her was a lie to trick her into ending her life and entering some kind of eternal nightmare. Which I don’t think is the case because Anna isn’t really herself anymore at the end but I like the idea still. I guess I don’t like the idea that the Madame got her answer and was satisfied with it, I feel the movie is so dark and grim it just doesn’t fit, and there’s more ironic justice imo if she lost everything at the end.

    It's actually rare for gory American movies to be good, I usually prefer japanese ones (especially older movies) but this french one is quite good at what it does so I guess european movies are as good as japanese ones in the horror/gore department
    I usually watch only one genre of French movies...wich is gay, they do it really well and quite often

    "Curious to see how much this movie is potentially about the idea of not being straight and that creating inner demons" - you're absolutely right, "being gay and having to fight against society... and people that don't support being anything but straight" - that's what MARTYRS is all about. It's just a metaphor of being gay and in love with a person who's thought to be straight and she died before her coming out. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

    I liked your reaction but I found it unnecessary for you talking about them being a couple so much. Yes they were at least kinda in love and yes annas mom didn't like Lucie because she found Lucie was crazy, wich in some way : she was because she had seveeeeeere ptsd ...BUT this movie is in no shape or form some gay Propaganda nor pointing out that "gays have it bad in a straight society" ...that's just untrue and a bullshit stance. Literally no one cares about if you're gay or not especially in the area this movie was created in. The same area I live in. Europe.
    And yes I do 10000000% agree with you that the actress playing Lucie is extremely beautiful. Especially her eyes. When she died I was kinda pissed off at first because I really got to like this actress immediately and I wanted to see more of her performance.
    All in all. Keep up your reactions. You're doing great 👍

      @findlesplurb Рік тому +7

      Wow, aren't we gays lucky to have you around to tell us what it's like to live our lives? And congrats for living in Europe. Too bad this film was made in North America; Canada, to be exact. But the poster is from the United States, like me. In THIS country, there have been about 150 laws passed in the last year restricting the rights of gay people. And the cretinous anti-gay movement is gaining steam in Canada even as I type these words. But I guess that's a 'bullshit stance' and we're all just imagining it. Also she never said the movie is propaganda, but from the general low quality of your comment I doubt you could define propaganda, let alone identify it on your own. Furthermore, every work of art is open to interpretation notwithstanding the intentions of the artist; everyone has a right to read what they want into anything. You clearly don't understand how critical analysis works. I love when Europeans try to come on like they're so much smarter than Americans, when clearly on average it's about the same everywhere: lots of dummies, and a few decently intelligent people.

    • @theredoctopus3196
      @theredoctopus3196 Рік тому +2

      @@findlesplurb wow are you gays really that hateful and stupid ? U know I could argue but your hate filled nonsensical rant already shows I would hit a wall with my arguments.
      Nonetheless ill give u some at least. ... first. Stop blaming you're a victim. You're just silly. Nobody cares what sexual orientation you have. Secondly ..no art is lot completely open for interpretation. There's a frame to it in wich you have to move .... for example. If we look at who pascal laugier is as a person, where the film was made ...and tho it was shot partly in Canada its still a French production from French people written by a French guy ... and then when it was produced and keep in mind the political situation back then. ....its fucking obvious that them being in love was never meant as some kind of, sorry to call it like that but .. : gay Propaganda.
      And oh i do mean what Propaganda means ..its just my metaphorical way of calling out the objectively existing virtue signaling that happens all the time nowadays especially regarding left extremism.
      Its obvious this element of the film was just there to give the characters a bit more depth. Its not meant to be an integral part of the artwork.
      If you wanna see a film that actually deals with topics like feminism and being gay in an unaccepting world ... go watch the 2015 japanese horror film TAG. Its by one of Japans most creative directors. Sion Sono

    I watched the movie once back then and I regret that I wasted my time on it.
    I really love horror, from spooky-paranormal to jumpscare to gory stuff. Yet there are a few movies that I refuse to give a thumbs up and that I find absolutely unnecessary and digusting. Martyrs is one of those. I didn't even care how interesting the movie started (bc I thought it was kinda interesting), but what it became in the second half was just terrible. Also the conclusion and ending left me 0% satisfied and actually kind of annoyed too. But that's just me, so..
