So after hearing you talk in the beginning about leaving comments about how you could improve, I went into it determined to find something and...well, I just can't. Dude, you killed it. Well done!
I swear, if Alanis was gender swapped she would sound like this! You sound awesome!! That rasp in your voice is top notch! Lovely song, and lovely cover :)
Just amazing, Alec ! Drive on point ! Very high-pitched song and you nailed it ! Just a heads up ... I don't know if it's possible, but a little bit, just a little bit of reverb or "hall effect" on post-production on your voice would lift it up and prolong your nice vocals even more. God bless, bro ! Salute you from Brazil, again ! You channel is a gem, dude ! Glad to be the 1st to comment it !
Thanks a ton! I thought about adding more reverb to certain parts but decided against it for this one. I’m glad to hear your opinion though! I’ll be more inclined to add reverb in the upcoming covers because of it 🙏
@@AlecSullivan I agree, given that the original had a lot of reverb or "big hall" effect and backing vocals. Your vocals in this cover are extremely strong. If you had a way to re-layer it with a backing track (you could sing those vocals too - Enya does it) it would massively improve this very excellent cover.
What a ride! My gosh you can sing & this is REALLY a hard one vocally. You're right on pitch with a great delivery. As you state this song is all about the passion, the only suggestion I have is that maybe at times you could look directly into the camera at your audience & connect them with that passion. Unbelievable job Alec.
I know I’m 11 months late to the party, but as an Alanis Morissette fan, I REALLY enjoyed your take. Your vocals were on point. Also, kudos for not changing the lyrics (most men do when covering songs written by women).
Wow, Great job with the vocals. I can not imagine how you could improve it. I am a professional guitarist and mandolin player. I give you a 10/10. The feel, the pitch, absolutely everything is perfect.

Man you've got an awesome voice! I'm an Alanis fan but this version really does it for me. Your voice reminds me of the original singer of the film musical Jesus Christ superstar (can't remember his name) .. I wonder how you'd render wicked game, the cover by HIM!
I recorded a version of me singing this song literally minutes before I watched this one. I will post it to my channel soon. I've sang this song in public at a karaoke bar at least once.
You have a good voice. This song sounded right on key. It is very much a passionate song, as you point out, and despite the passion of your singing, I didn't feel the same passion of emotions that I do in Alanis' original. I might say you seem too focused on the technical aspects - pitch, etc... - so that you have no energy left to give the feeling of the song. I am glad you remember it when it was new. Kudos for picking this song.
Thanks for the input, Fiona! I appreciate your honesty and for this one, I agree with you. I think if I were more comfortable with the lyrics then I would have been able to rock out a bit more. Unfortunately I was trying to focus on remembering the words, which took away from the passion. I’ll keep that in mind for next time! 🙏
You're definitely giving me some Mike Protich vibes with your vocal styling. No joke I had to Google the band Red Sun Rising just to see if you were their vocalist. And it's funny because they literally did the song Uninvited by Alanis, so I thought "he must really like her music!". No joke though you sound just like Mike!
Listened to it a couple of times now. Amazing work. Now that I've blown some smoke up your... um... now let's have some constructive criticism. The way Alanis does this song, she's extremely staccato and decisive and precise. She HITS the mark. That's what really sets her vocals apart in this song. I noticed you were slightly sliding over some of those hard percussive staccato vocals. It's a little mushy, honestly, in the fast parts. They don't give gold medals at the Olympics to gymnasts who just sort of show up, kinda do a couple of flips, and land wherever. They give gold medals to the gymnasts who STICK THEIR FEET. They KNOW when they are going to do it and they DO IT. If you can incorporate this into your cover, it would go from being a good cover to a GREAT one. You know the song, you know the words, you can sing the notes... now you have to KNOW when those beats are. KNOW where the accents you want to stick are at. And STICK them. I saw Alanis do this song live. She's not reciting a shopping list. The lyrics come out with the pain and anger of a jilted lover... she SPITS the words with a venomous energy. The song was EXHAUSTING to perform... you could see the sweat rolling off of her. She sang it with such energy, it was almost exhausting to hear! It wasn't just a recitation of lyrics that everyone knows. It was like being punched in the stomach with them. "Every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you FEEL IT." It's visceral. She's seeing her former lover with another woman in public. She FEELS. This is her emotional outpouring, not just of her feelings, but also a punch-by-punch list of exactly what's wrong with this guy. The scene in Whiplash... are you rushing or are you dragging? You need Fletcher to throw a cymbal at your head. You have the greatness within you. Now show it off to everyone else. You made a good cover. Now make it EXCELLENT. You can.
Glad you like it! I prefer to keep lyrics the same unless I’m trying to intentionally change the meaning in some way. This one is hard to justify changing any lyrics!
Mate. You've got to mean it. It's not a "song", it's painful story she's telling, it's full or rage and blame and shame and anger. She's almost screaming the words. Anyway. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the input! I usually do more interpretive versions for my acoustic covers. I like to treat the vocal covers more closely to the original but with my own style of vocals. Maybe I’ll do an acoustic version of this song and put a different spin on it! But I do love to climb the rafters 😁 Thanks for the comment!
@@AlecSullivan Any time 😁
I look forward to the acoustic version! 😉
Vocally it was fine but it lacked emotion. Where was the pain. I didn’t buy it but I do like your voice.
I appreciate the honest comment! I don’t disagree. I’ve thought about redoing this one with more emotion. I’d love to hear how you feel about my others!
Less dialogue
Thanks for the input! I put chapters in the videos for anyone that wants to skip to the song. Hopefully that helps!
You should switch the pronouns from she/her to he/him.
Make it from a Guys perspective.
I like to try to keep the original intent of the song as best as I can, so I don’t switch lyrics very often, but hopefully it’s easy enough to imagine! Thanks for the comment 🤘
You have a voice but your cover doesn't give any emotion.
I appreciate your opinion and don’t completely disagree! I might do a cover with more emotion since a lot of people have mentioned that, but I think the chorus got me going. Thanks for the comment!
@@AlecSullivan Not trying to be mean as you replied to me and I realized after the fact what I say can be read poorly. You have a great voice, I feel that you could definitely put more OOMPH into it and I'm sure you're going to prosper on youtube. :)
@@AggravatedCassowary.Thank you, I appreciate the clarification! And I totally agree with that. I’d love to hear what you think about my newest cover (Kate Bush). I definitely tried to keep it oomphy! 🙂
