@@bink9797 That's fair. I guess I read the original comment as more of a top 5-10 song of the 90s. It seems to be more in the 25-50 range on those lists, which seems about right. Not my personal cup of tea, but I get why it's there.

She even pointed out that she was never really angsty. She just wrote that song because she was mad at the time but never meant to have a lifetime of animosity, etc. Interestingly, I think "Your House" was also written about Dave. (The "shake is like a fish" was about a record executive although she might have got the imagery from her time with Dave.)

I don't know if it's common, especially today. But, there's certainly a point with many people who look back on their first true HURT, and are able with the big assist of time to see that much of it was NOT malicious, no matter how much so it felt many years ago.
Maybe we were young and there was some "games" involved. But, I no longer feel they wished me to hurt the way I did.
For me, it was a simple matter of it was the wrong TIME. And I hadn't had the chance to become what I needed to be for that to work.
And 20 years? Totally worth the wait.
Sometimes it takes time to show how REAL something truly is.

Ive heard him tell the story about his sister before which back then he told it as an example of how he was on good terms with Alanis. Which at the time I thought, "her relationship with your sister is not about you". Him asking her how she would like him to respond, shows why he was usually quick to change the subject. I love that album and its follow-up. I have been in both sides of their relationship in my personal life and even though I previously was the hurt one who cared too much, I still found myself not seeing when i was dating someone that did for me and caused them more hurt than i ever intended, I also like how he didn't indulge the movie theater story. I agree that I wish more artists would be this open like this. I now want to know where else on the album, he heard aspects of their relationship discussed. I appreciate an artists want to not give away all the details in fear it may make a song less meaningful to others, although when the art comes from real stories, I love hearing what those are.

I feel like Alanis and Dave are both genuinely good people that happened to get famous for a little while in the 90s out of mostly happenstance but also due to being genuinely talented individuals who happened to find just the right gig for them and for the time they were in. Then, they went off and mostly just lived their lives, still communicating with their fans but mostly just kept to themselves. The fact that they were together and then broke up but then reconnected shows how much character they have. Sure they both have done things that they aren't proud of but who hasn't? This song came out 2 weeks after I found out the love of my life was engaged, to the girl that was introduced to me as "just a friend". 4 years with me, and only 4 months with her, and he was ready to marry. When I found out he was engaged, it literally brought me to my knees.
I was at a friend's house, when I first heard it, as the radio station premiered it. It was like a punch in the gut. Before this song, there weren't any hurt and angry breakup songs by women. There were hurt songs, sad songs, it just didn't work out kind of songs, I'll always love you songs, maybe we can fix this songs. But nothing like this. 3 years later they finalized their divorced. He eventually remarried, and had 2 sons. He died, a decade ago, of pancreatic cancer. I didn't find out about the divorce and second wife until he was dead.
The first night I finally let my friends drag me out to try to have fun was about a year after he ended it. Happened to run into 2 of his friends, who lived on the other side of the country, so I was shocked to see them. Hugs all around. It was good to see them. Until I asked why they were home and they had to tell me they had just come from his wedding. That was a bad, bad night.
I never spoke to him again, and shortly thereafter moved 10 states away just to get away from everything. Cut all ties with my entire friend group to avoid having to hear about him.
We had been the anchor couple. All of his friends and all of my friends started hanging out together, several of them started dating. When he ended it, it was like a bomb went off for the whole group. One of my friends said, "If you two couldn't make it, what hope do the rest of us have?" One of his friends confronted him and told him he was making the biggest mistake of his life.
This whole damn album just reminds me of him. This song because of it's message, and the hidden track, particularly, because she knows she's been replaced and she's grieving.
