  • This video has been largely inspired by a brand new set of Payson's Fanned Nickel Steel strings. I had ancient strings on this bass for a very long time, and just put on a fresh set of nickels on. Wow. It woke up the bass-beast within! Just look at me, my time is all over the place but I'm having so much fun nonetheless. That chunky, bassy in-your-face sound turned up to 11, it doesn't get better than that.
Speaking about the sound: this is a fretless. Sure doesn't sound like one with all this bite! But it's a fretless Dingwall Afterburner II sporting Payson's Nickel Strings, played with pickups in series, active with a slight treble boost and through the Man of the Music preset on the GT-10 bass processor.
As for the bassline, it's played by Tony Levin. Everything you need to know is that Tony Levin is insane. The intro of this song is fascinating, I put in so much effort getting that bassline right and it's still far from there. And he did it live, I have little doubt he improvised it at least to an extent, it sounds so much like him. And I don't know how much time I've spent trying to get just those 2 minutes down, and still wouldn't dare even playing it standing up. And he improvised it. Live. And after this beautiful intro, he puts chopsticks on his right hand fingers and smacks the strings with them for the remainder of the song. Not kidding. He's insane.
This song is from Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live concert. Even though I'm not a fan of his music in general, that concert is the best live performance I've ever seen. It is a live concert that won a Grammy award! Musicians that are beyond perfect, amazing back vocals, supplemented with a multimedia experience that sets the bar real high. When a metalhead can enjoy an 80s pop concert start to finish, well that's something. If you didn't watch it, put it on the top of your watch list now.

"...he puts chopsticks on his right hand fingers and smacks the strings with them for the remainder of the song." They're called Funk Fingers. They're actually short drumsticks with a bit of rubber on the end. You can purchase them online. THey're pretty cool. Nice cover, btw. Well done. Your bass tone is excellent too.

Lovely playing and a beautiful AB-II with a fantastic growly "Rock Fretless" tone! (my Custom Spector Euro Bolt-On 5 w/ Nordy Big Singles & OBP-3 sounds similar) How was your transition to the Dingwall's fanned-fretboard, ESPECIALLY when playing fretless? I'm considering starting down that path with an AB-Z (and if Sheldon would make one, a fretless "Sister") but as I've been playing more and more fretless over the past few years I don't want all my effort to drift away.

+John Power No tab, just listening to the tune and playing along. I didn't get it down note-for-note.
