- Another tribute to one of my main influences on bass - the great Tony Levin.
Bass: Benavente Vintage Vortex 5 Fretless /w DR Lo Riders nickel strings (.040-.120 gauge)
recorded through EBS MultiComp compressor pedal into RME Fireface 400 audio interface
With head phones this is exactly how loud I wish the bass felt in the real song. ❤️ lovin’ them big phat low B’s 🤤
man how did he even come up with that..... insane
As long as that one dislike isn't from Tony Levin himself.
Haha! Met him in Moscow years ago, he's super nice and humble guy
Such a beautiful and amazing performance! Can't believe there isn't more likes on this.
the vibe is phenomenal. Congrats !!
thanks for posting. Nice work. I'm just starting to play fretless and this is a tune I've particularly wanted to play.
Masterful, intonation spot on! Killer bass and tone, thanks for an awesome tutorial!
Intonation was the scariest thing lol Thank you!
wonderful cover, gorgeous bass and tone!
Great Tone and playing!
Yes brother
Nice! Love fretless tone and timbre.
This is wonderful.
I love it man. Thanks!
this song brings back great memories , good job
amazing touch man! i really like it
Very nice!
Amazing cover man! One beautiful looking/sounding bass!
This song really shows the musical genius of Peter Gabriel and you make it look so easy. Really nicely done.
awesome cover :D
very nice playing
I love the fretless!
Great! Thank you so much!
Wow! You make it look effortless, which seems to be the case with all top level bassists I’ve seen. That low B rattles my teeth too! Beautiful cover.
That D-A-E downward slide at ~2:16 was slick. +1 sub.
Nice!
I’ve often wondered if Gabriel gave Tony Levin more freedom to stretch out and experiment musically & sonically than other artists would typically allow on a studio recording from the bass player..?? Because I mean the Gabriel-Levin catalog has some pretty epic bass playing and wild sounds.. Maybe you know this already.. But Levin actually recorded very tunes with chopsticks 🥢 hooked onto his RH fingers w/elastic bands to emulate a drummer hitting a snare with sticks!! 😎
Yeah, he called them "Funk fingers" and even sold them for a while on his website. I believe he got this idea from Jerry Marotta who experimented with playing guitar with his drum sticks.
What equipment are you using here? Awesome tone and depth
Only onboard preamp direct to audio interface. Some LA-2A-style compression in DAW and that's it!
Glad you appreciate this song as much as I do. Can you cover the Secret World version?
i'm realizing now that you made this your own, and I like it better than his work at Secret World. Good job
Secret World is a pinnacle of live performance for me ever since I was a teenager. But I’m too lazy to do a note by note cover, sorry for that lol
Nice! Do you have a link to the transcription? Thanks!
Anthony Feschyn nope, I played this one by ear
Hi.good videos.I play 4 strings Bass : D G C F (055 75 95 110)...for this tuning is a light gauge...I'm thinking to use D G C F (060 080 100 120)...What do you think about to use 120 for low D string?Is 120 string light or Very light for low B note?
If you feel that 110 for a low D feels light, you can go for a 120, but maybe it can sound muddy. I have a 115 for low E on a short scale bass (30.5") and while the tension is right, it lacks a bit of definition (which is okay in my case but can be a problem for you). Maybe if you can find 115 gauge for a low D it will be the solution.
As for low B - yes, 120 is pretty light. I feel the right gauge for low B is 125 on 35" scale and 125-130 for a standard 34" scale.
